33:0 Khosrov sends Khoṙeam with a large force to Asorestan, and Ashtat with T’ēodos son of Maurice to Armenia. All Asorestan and Mesopotamia are subjected to the Persians. Ashtat defeats the Greeks and attacks Karin. T’ēodos reveals himself to the inhabitants of Karin. Karin is surrendered. The general Shahēn comes to Karin; emigration of the population of Karin to Ahmatan. Death of the Catholicoi Yovhan and Abraham; Komitas is installed on the throne. Capture of Caesarea of Cappadocia by Shahēn, and the killing of Vasak Artsruni:

33:1 Յայնժամ արքայ Խոսրով դարձաւ ի Դարայէ եւ հանգոյց զզաւրս իւր վերստին, եւ այլ եւս բազմութիւն զաւրաց ժողովեալ գումարեաց, եւ արձակէր ընդ կողմանս Ասորեստանի զաւր մեծ հզաւր յոյժ, զԽոռեամ, որ Ըռազմանն անուանեալ, զաւրագլուխ նոցա: Եւ հրաման տայր նոցա այսպէս, եթէ «Որք եկեսցեն ի ծառայութիւն՝ սիրով ընկալ, եւ ի խաղաղութեան եւ ի շինութեան պահեսջիր. եւ որ ընդդէմ դարձցին եւ պատերազմեսցին՝ սրով սատակեսցին:

33:1 Then king Khosrov returned from Dara and rested his army once more. He gathered yet another host of troops; and sent across the territory of Asorestan a large and very powerful force with Khoṙeam, called Ĕṙazman, as their general. He gave them the following order: ’Receive in a friendly way those who will submit, and keep them in peace and prosperity. But put to the sword those who may offer resistance and make war. ’:

33:2 Եւ ընդ կողմանս Հայաստանի արձակէր զԱշտատ զՅեզտայար հանդերձ զաւրու մեծաւ. եւ զԹէոդոս կայսր զանուանեալ որդին Մաւրկայ ընդ նմա գումարէ:

33:2 To the regions of Armenia, he sent Ashtat Yeztayar with a large army, and included with him the caesar T’ēodos, the so-called son of Maurice:

33:3 Եւ Խոռեամ առեալ զզաւրացն բազմութիւն գնաց ի կողմանս Ասորեստանի, եւ հասեալ ի Միջագետս Ասորւոց, պատեալ պաշարեն զՈւռհայ քաղաք, եւ մարտ եդեալ կռուի ընդ նմա: Իսկ նոքա ի բազմութենէ զաւրացն եւ ի մարտիցն յաղթութենէ եւ զի ոչ ուստեք գոյր նոցա ակնկալութիւն փրկութեան՝ խաւսեցան ի խաղաղութիւն, եւ խնդրեցին երդումն, զի մի կորուսցեն զքաղաքն, եւ բացեալ զդուռն քաղաքին հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն:

33:3 Taking the host of his troops, Khoṙeam went to the territory of Asorestan; on reaching Syrian Mesopotamia, they besieged the city of Urha, and attacked it. But the (Edessans), because of the multitude of the (Persian) troops and their victory in the engagements, and since they had no expectation of salvation from anywhere, parleyed for peace, and requested an oath that they would not destroy the city. Then, having opened the city gate, they submitted:

33:4 Նոյնպէս եւ Ամիթ եւ Թելա եւ Ռաշայենայ եւ ամենայն քաղաքք Միջագետաց Ասորւոց կամաւք հնազանդեալ ի ծառայութիւն՝ պահեցան ի խաղաղութեան եւ ի շինութեան: Եւ գնացեալ նոցա յԱնտիոք քաղաք՝ հնազանդեցան եւ նոքա կամաւք ի ծառայութիւն հանդերձ ամենայն քաղաքաւք եւ բնակչաւք իւրեանց, փախստականք լեալ ի սրոյն Փոկասայ:

33:4 Similarly, Amida, and T’ela, and Ṙashayenay, and all the cities of Syrian Mesopotamia willingly submitted and were preserved in peace and prosperity. They went to the city of Antioch, and these too willingly submitted with all the cities and their inhabitants, fleeing from the sword of Phocas:

33:5 Իսկ Աշտատ Յեզտայար եկն ի սահմանս Հայոց յամի ութ եւ տասներորդի թագաւորութեանն: Եւ զաւրն Յունաց գումարեալ ժողովեցան ի գաւառն Բասենոյ, եւ եւս ահագին դիմեալ յարձակեցան ի վերայ նորա. եւ եղեւ պատերազմ մեծ ի Դու եւ յՈրդրու: Հարին զաւրն Յունաց եւ խորտակեցին կործանմամբ մեծաւ: Բազումք մեռան ի պատերազմին, եւ ոչ գոյր թիւ սպանելոցն ի դաշտին:

33:5 Ashtat Yeztayar came to the borders of Armenia in the eighteenth year of the reign (of Khosrov). The Greek army assembled in the province of Basean, and in even more fearful manner attacked him. There was a great battle at Du and Ordru. They defeated the Greek army and crushed them with great slaughter. Many died in the battle, and the number of those slain on the plain could not be counted:

33:6 Հալածեաց զնոսա մինչեւ ի քաղաքն Սատաղացւոց, եւ ինքն գումարեալ բանակեցաւ շուրջ զԿարնոյ քաղաքաւ, եւ կալաւ ընդ նմա գործ պատերազմի. ընդդիմացան ի ներքուստ ինչ. եւ ոչ սակաւ լինէր կոտորածն վնասուց յարտաքնոցն: Ապա յառաջ մատուցեալ Թէոդոս կայսրն ասելով, եթէ «Ես եմ, ասէ, թագաւորն ձեր»: Յայնժամ հաւանեալ բանային. ելին գլխաւորքն քաղաքին եւ ընծայեցան նմա, եւ դարձեալ անդրէն հաւանեցուցին զքաղաքն, թէ նոյն ինքն է Թէոդոս, որդին Մաւրկայ:

33:6 He pursued them as far as the city of Satala; then collecting his forces he camped around the city of Karin and initiated military action against it. They were opposed from within for a while, and not insignificant was the slaughter caused by those outside. Then the caesar T’ēodos came forward, saying: ’I am your king. ’ They then acquiesced and opened the gate. The chief men of the city came out and presented themselves to him. On returning they persuaded the city that he really was T’ēodos, son of Maurice:

33:7 Յայնժամ բացեալ զդուռնն՝ հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն: Եւ կարգեալ ի նմա պահապանս, գնաց եւ կալաւ զքաղաքն Հաշտենից՝ զՁիթառիճ եւ զՍատաղ եւ զԱռաստիայ եւ զՆիկոպաւլիս եւ գնաց:

33:7 Then, having opened the gate, they submitted. He posted guards there, then went and seized Dzit’aṙich, the city in Hashteank’, and Satała and Arastiay and Nicopolis, and departed:

33:8 Ապա եկն Շահէնն Պատգոսապան եւ զանց արարեալ զԿարնոյ քաղաքաւն. եւ յոստանն Դըւնայ եկն մարզպանութեանն Շահրայեանպետ: Իսկ Շահեանն երթեալ հանդիպէր զաւրացն Յունաց ի Կարին գաւառի: Եւ արարեալ պատերազմ՝ հարկանէր զնոսա սրով սուսերի եւ փախստական արարեալ հալածական առնէր յաշխարհէն:

33:8 Then came Shahēn Patgosapan, passing by the city of Karin. To the capital Dvin as marzpan came Shahrayeanpet. Shahēn encountered the Greek army in the province of Karin. Engaging battle, he smote them with the sword, and expelled them from the country in flight:

33:9 Իսկ յամին քսաներորդի առաջներորդի արքային Խոսրովայ հրաման ետ նմա՝ փոխել զբնակիչս ի Կարնոյ քաղաքէ եւ տանել բնակեցուցանել յԱհմատեան շահաստանի. ընդ նոսին ըմբըռնեալ եւ երանելի ծերունի կաթուղիկոսն Յովհան ի գերութիւն վարեցաւ հանդերձ ամենայն սպասիւք եկեղեցւոյն:

33:9 Now in the twenty-first year of king Khosrov he ordered him to remove the inhabitants from the city of Karin and to settle them in the capital Ahmatan. With them was forcibly taken into captivity the blessed and aged Catholicos Yovhan with all the vessels of the church:

33:10 Եւ անդէն վախճանեալ բերաւ մարմին նորա ի գիւղն Աւան, յեկեղեցին, զոր ինքն շինեաց: Եւ ի նմին ամի վախճանեցաւ երանելին Աբրահամ կաթուղիկոսն: Եւ յետ սորա յաջորդէ զաթոռ հայրապետութեանն Կումիտաս Տարոնոյ եպիսկոպոսն, որ ի գեղջէ Աղցիցն աւանէ, եւ առ սովաւ կատարի շինուած եկեղեցւոյն սրբոյն Գրիգորի:

33:10 After he died there, his body was brought to the village of Awan, to the church which he had built himself. In that same year the blessed Catholicos Abraham also died. After the latter Komitas bishop of Taron, who was from the village of Ałts’its’awan, succeeded to the patriarchal throne; and in his time the construction of the church of St Gregory was completed:

33:11 Եւ յամին քսաներորդի Խոսրովայ արքայի ասպատակ արարեալ Շահենայ՝ արշաւեաց ի կողմանս արեւմտից եւ գնացեալ ի Կեսարիա Կապադովկացւոց. իսկ բնակիչք քաղաքին քրիստոնեայք ելին ի քաղաքէն եւ գնացին. բայց Հրէայքն ընդ առաջ երթեալ հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն:

33:11 In the [20th] year of king Khosrov Shahēn made an incursion, raiding the regions of the west and reaching Caesarea of Cappadocia. Then the Christian inhabitants of the city left the city and departed. But the Jews went out to meet him and submitted:

33:12 եւ նստաւ նա ի քաղաքին յայնմիկ զտարի մի եւ կալան զՎասակն Արծրունի զորդի Սահակայ նահապետին Արծրունեաց, եւ սպանին զնա հանդէպ դրանն քաղաքին ի վերայ փայտի. որ թէպէտ եւ բազում աւճիրս վնասուց գործեալ էր նորա ի զաւրուն Պարսից, սակայն ամենայն զաւրն Պարսից ողբայր զնա վասն քաջութեան եւ արիութեան, եւ մանուկ ուժեղ եւ բարձրահասակ:

33:12 He stayed in that city for a year
and they seized Vasak Artsruni, son of Sahak the prince of the Artsrunik’ and killed him opposite the gate of the city on a cross. Although he had caused many losses to the Persian army, yet all the Persian troops mourned him for his valour and bravery; as he was a powerful and tall youth:

33:13 Մանաւանդ զի սնեալ եւս էր ի մէջ նոցա, եւ վարժեալ եւս էր ի նոցանէն հրահանգաւ: Այսպէս եւ սա:

33:13 and especially because he had been raised among them, and had been trained by them in their ways. So it happens:
