4:0 Յաղագս թագաւորելոյ Պարուրայ, եւ յաջորդաց նորա մինչեւ ի Վահէ:

 4:0 The Reign of Paroyr and His Successors until Vahe:

4:1 Յետ ամենեցուն սոցա Պարոյր անուն՝ յազգէ Հայկայ. աստանօր զանազգիսն ի բաց լքեալ հերքեալ՝ եւ զնահապետութիւն ազգի իւրոյ վերստին նորոգեալ պայազատէր:

 4:1 At this time Paroyr expelled the foreigners, and having renewed the ascendancy of his family he ruled over his domain:

4:2 Սա ճոխաբար պսակի թագընկալութեամբ ընդ առաջին ի Հայս:

 4:2 He was the first among the Armenians to have been magnificently crowned with a diadem:

4:3 զի Վարբակէս գաւառով Մեդացի ի քաջաց արանց բարեկամս իւր կազմեալ առատութեամբ բազկաւ, ընդ որս եւ զքաջն եւ զաջողակն մեր Պարոյր յինքն յանկուցեալ՝ ձեւ եւ շուք թագաւորութեան նմա դնէր եւ նոքօք հանդերձ յինքն գրաւեալ ի Սարդանապաղղայ զթագաւորութիւնն՝ տիրէ Ասորեստանի եւ Նինուէի:

 4:3 for Varbakes of Media, who had through his generosity won the friendship of valorous men and also drawn to himself along with the others our own valiant victorious Paroyr, granted him royal insignia and honor, and having seized the kingdom of Sardanapalus (Sardanapaghgh) together with these men, ruled over Assyria and Nineveh:

4:4 Յայնմ հետէ ի պարծանս գովեստից ազգիս մերոյ միտք իմ որցեալ զիս բերէ դեգերիլ ի ներբողումն. զի ոչ նահապետս այսուհետեւ, այլ թագաւորս զմերազնեայս շարայարել ինձ պատշաճի պանծալի պարծանօք:

 4:4 My mind, enraptured by that event, prods me to occupy myself with the composition of an encomium praising our people, for henceforth I shall with great pride give the succession of (our) kings and not patriarchs:

4:5 Ապա առ սովաւ Արծրունիքն յորդւոցն Սենեքերիմայ բնակիլ ի Հայս բարեպատիւք ի Պարոյրայ եղեն:

 4:5 During his (Paroyr’s) time the Arcruni, who were (the descendants) of the children of Sennacherib (Senek’erim), were accorded welcome by him in order to establish their abode in Armenia:

4:6 Իսկ Պարոյր յետ մահուան իւրոյ թողու իւր որդի զՀրաչէ՝ ըստ արժանի անուանն եւ տեսակ դիտակին. վասն զի յաւէտ իմն զուարթատեսիլ եւ բոցակնագոյն նա տեսողացն երեւիւր:

 4:6 Paroyr was survived by his son Hrach’e, whose fame and physical appearance did justice to his name, since to the onlookers he always appeared to be handsome and with sparkles in his eyes:

4:7 Առ սովաւ գերեալ գիտէ Գիրն զՀրէաստան ի Նաբոգոդոնոսորայ:

 4:7 The (Sacred) Scriptures acknowledge the captivity of the Jews by Nebuchadnezzar during his time:

4:8 Իսկ Հրաչեայ ի գլխաւոր գերելոցն զմի ոմն ի Նաբոգոդոնոսորայ հայցեալ՝ զՇամբաթ անուն, բնակեցուցանէ յերկրիս մերում մեծապատիւ շքեղութեամբ: Եւ ի ծննդոց սորա սերեալ ազգք Բագրատունեաց:

 4:8 Hrach’e asked Nebuchadnezzar (to let him have) a certain Shambat, one of the important captives, whom he settled in our land with great honor and glory; the branches of the Bagratuni family are descended from the generations of the latter:

4:9 Իսկ յետ Հրաչեայ Փառնաւազ զցեղապետութիւն ազգիս պայազատէ:

 4:9 After Hrach’e P’arnawaz succeeded to the leadership of our people:

4:10 եւ յետ նորա Պաճոյճ, եւ յետ նորա Կռոնակ, յետ որոյ Փաւոս:

 4:10 He was followed by Pachoych, and then by Kronak, after whom came P’awos:

4:11 եւ զկնի Փաւոսայ միւս Հայկակ. իսկ յետ սորա Երուանդ, որ փոքր ինչ ի նահապետութեան կեցեալ՝ ծնանի զմեծն Տիգրան:

 4:11 P’awos’s successor was the second Haykak, and after him came Eruand, who begot Tigran the Great shortly after the commencement of his reign:

4:12 Եւ այսքան անուանք եւ զրոյցք թէ հարցեալ լինի՝ յորմէ՞ գոլ գիտել, գիտասցէ զի Քաղդէացւոց մատեանքն մեզ ընձեռեցան, որք կան ի Նինուէ եւ յԵդեսիայ առ Տիբերիւ գրեալ:

 4:12 Should the reader be curious to find out the source of so many names and stories, let him know that the books of the Chaldaeans, which were written at the time of Tiberius and are to be found in Nineveh and Edessa, were delivered to our hands:

4:13 Բայց Տիգրանայ առաւել եւս քան զբնաւ թագաւորս մեր իմաստայեղց հարստութեամբ խոհեմամիտ երեւեալ՝ անցեալ զանցեալ զամենեքումբք լինէր:

 4:13 Now, Tigran, who seemed to be by virtue of his wisdom more soberminded than any of our kings, surpassed them all:

4:14 Սա յետ բազում առաքինի քաջութեան եւ զբազում գործս քաղաքականս յարդարելոյ զՄարացն ի բաց բարձեալ զիշխանութիւն՝ պայազատէր զնա:

 4:14 After accomplishing numerous deeds of valor, and regulating many civic transactions, he took away the power from the Medes, and took charge of it:

4:15 եւ զՅոյնս ոչ սակաւ ժամանակս ինչ ընդ իւրեաւ հնազանդեալ նուաճէր:

 4:15 He also subordinated the Greeks in submission for a long period of time:

4:16 զԱժդահակ սպանեալ՝ զարքունիս նորա ի գերութիւն վարէր, եւ օժանդակեալ եւս յԱնուշ մօրէն Վիշապաց եւ կալեալ զԿիւրոս՝ յինքն զիշխանութիւնն Մարաց եւ Պարսից գրաւեալ յանգուցանէր:

 4:16 Then, having killed Astyages (Azhdahak), he took the latter’s court captive, and assisted by Anoysh, the mother of dragons, and holding Cyrus, he seized and annexed the domains of the Medes and the Persians:

4:17 եւ զսահմանս հայրենի գրոհին ի հինն մեր հասուցանէր յեզերս ծայրից բնակութեանց, եւ զազգս մեր եւս քան զեւս բարձրացուցանէր ճոխացուցեալ. եւ որք ընդ լծով հարկի այլոց ոմանց էին կացեալք՝ ամենեցունց նոցա լծադիր եւ հարկապահանջ լինէր:

 4:17 thus extending the borders of his own people to the ancient limits of our abode. More and more he exalted our people and endowed her with riches. He made all of those who had been under the yoke of certain others subservient and tributary to himself:

4:18 Եւ ի սմանէ ասեն լինել զՈստանիկ ազատութիւն բարձին, որ այժմ դեռեւս կայ եւ պահի անուամբ իբր թագաւորական իմն զարմ զնոսա իմացեալ:

 4:18 It is said that the (social) order of the ostanik azats, which has been preserved to this day under the same name, derives its origin from him, and is assumed to be of royal lineage:

4:19 Այսպէս էր սա մեծիմաստ եւ պարկեշտ եւ մեծաջան եւ նազելի ի գնացս եւ ի գործս զկեանս իւր էր քաղաքավարեալ:

 4:19 Thus he was a very wise, virtuous, and assiduous man, praiseworthy in his ways and works, who conducted his life honestly:

4:20 այլեւ ի հաւասարասիրութիւն առ ամենեսեան զինքն կշռադատեալ՝ այսպէս եւ անդր եւս քան զայլս լցեալ էր սորա բարի մրցանաց հանդէսք. եւ բան գովեստից սորա բազում ճառից պիտոյ է, այլ շտապ տագնապի տարակուսանացս ոչ ներէ ինձ ծախել զժամանակս ի ներբողումն սորա քան թէ փութալ յայլինչ, որ առաջի կայ:

 4:20 Moreover, since he kept himself in equipoise by treating everyone with equity, the evidence of his noble contests was thus more complete than that of others. Numerous treatises would be necessary in order to praise him, but the great urgency of my anxiety does not allow me to spend time to glorify him; it rather forces me to turn to other matters that lie before us:

4:21 Տիգրան ծնեալ որդի զԲաբ, զՏիրան, զՎահագն, զոր ի կտնտոցահար աղեբախս ընդ վիշապաց համբաւէին կռուիլ նմա եւ յաղթել:

 4:21 Tigran sired Bab, Tiran and Vahagn. In (sagas sung to the tune of) the plectrum and the lyre the latter is said to have fought against the vishaps and vanquished them:

4:22 եւ ընդ քաջին Հերակլեայ նահատակութեանցն զնա համեմատել: Ասի բան զՎահագնէ, թէ ի նահանգին Վրաց ըստ չափ հասակի նորա անդրի կանգնեալ պատուէին զոհիւք:

 4:22 They compared his toils with those of the hero Herakles. The tradition about Vahagn holds that his life-size statue stood in the province (nahang) of Iberia, and was worshipped with [72] sacrifices:

4:23 Եւ ի զարմից սորա սերին Վահունիք. սա ծնանի որդի եւ ի կրտսերոյ որդւոյ նորա Առաւենէ Առաւենեանք ցեղապետին:

 4:23 From his line descend the Vahuni, (for) Vahagn had children, and the Araweneank’ traced their lineage from his youngest son Arawen:

4:24 Իսկ յԱռաւենայ ծնանի Ներսեհ, եւ ի Ներսեհէ Զարեհ, յորմէ ազգ Զարեհաւանեան:

 4:24 Arawen begot Nerseh, and Nerseh was the father of Zareh from whom the Zarehawanean family descended:

4:25 իսկ ի Զարեհէ Արմոգ, եւ յԱրմոգայ Բայգամ, ի Բայգամայ Վան, եւ ի Վանէ Վահէ:

 4:25 Zareh begot Armog, Armog begot Baygam, Baygam begot Van, Van begot Vahe:

4:26 Սա խրոխտաբար սոնքացեալ ընդդէմ Աղեքսանդրի Մակեդոնացւոյ՝ սպանանի ի նմանէ:

 4:26 The latter was killed by Alexander the Macedonian, because he was indignant with him:

4:27 Յայսմհետէ ոչ գտանի ստուգաբան պատմութիւն ինչ ցեղապետութեանցն կացելոց մինչեւ ցթագաւորել Պարթեւին Վաղարշակայ. զի սամարտիկոս շփոթութեամբ զմիմեամբք ելեալ եւ այր ընդ առն ի կռիւս կաքաւեալ՝ մինչեւ դիւրամուտ զօտարածինն ի բնակութիւն իւրեանց առնէին եւ անյայտ զիւրեանցն զրոյցս:

 4:27 After this you will find no authentic account of the patriarchs that ruled until the time of Vagharshak the Parthian, since (our princes) rose against one another in barbaric confusion and resisted each other until they adopted the foreign-born (prince = Vagharshak), who had easily come in as a native, and relinquished their own stories:

4:28 Արդ այլ մի՛ եւս աստանօր ինձ աշխատութիւն հասուցաներ, որ զհամառօտութիւն բանի եւ զհաւաստութիւն եւ զարագաբանութիւն միշտ պատուել գիտես:

 4:28 At this point do not enhance my labors, for I [[gitem] gites M. [you . . .]] have always respected brevity, authenticity and compression of style:

4:29 Բայց ամենեցունց սոցա թուականք ժամանակաց ի մերոյն Հայկայ մինչեւ ցթագաւորել Վաղարշակայ գտանին [2297] ամք:

 4:29 Be it as it may, the timespan from our own Hayk to the coronation of Vagharshak is [2297] years:
