40:0 Վասն մեծի պատերազմին Պարսից եւ Քրիստոնէից յԱպահունեաց գաւառին:	40:0 About the great battle between the Parsees and Christians in the Apahunik’s region:
40:1 Յայսմ ամի եւ ի սոյն աւուրս, ի [ՆԽԷ] թուականին, դարձեալ զաւրաժողով լինի Մամլան որդի Աբլհաճի, թոռն Ռովդայ ամիրայի Ատրպատականի գալ ի պատերազմ ի վերայ կիւռապաղատին Դաւթի:	40:1 At that time and in the same year [447=998], Mamlan, the son of Ablhaj, the grandson of the Rod of the Amir of Atrpatakan, again gathered an army to go to war against David’s kouropalates:
40:2 Եւ կուտէ առ ինքն զբազմութիւն զաւրացն Պարսից եւ Մարաց, աւգնականութեամբ ամիրային Խորասանայ եւ այլ խուժադուժ զաւրաւք բազմաւք խորհի տիրել Հայոց եւ Վրաց, շինել զքաղաքն Կարնոյ եւ յաւարի առնուլ զերկիրն Տայոց, փոխանակ զի ի Մանազկերտ զտուն աղաւթից նոցա կործանեցին քրիստոնեայք:	40:2 Having gathered around him numerous troops of Persians and Mars (Medes), he thought, with the help of the Amir of Khurasan and other barbarians, to take possession of Armenia and Iberia, rebuild the city of Karin and devastate the land of Tayk’s because the Christians destroyed their prayer house in Manazkert:
40:3 Եւ ելեալ ի Թաւրիզոյ ի քաղաքէն իւրմէ ի սահմանս Հերայ ծանր ամբոխիւ, լայն բանակաւ՝ անցանէ ընդ աշխարհն Վասպուրականի, գայ իջանէ ի գաւառն Ապահունեաց:	40:3 Leaving his city of Tavriz, which is within the limits of Her, with a huge horde and a large camp, he passed through the land of Vaspurakan and stopped in the Apakhunik district:
40:4 Իսկ կիւռապաղատն Դաւիթ ոչ անձամբ երթայ ի պատերազմ ընդդէմ նորա, զի այր ծեր էր եւ անցեալ զաւուրբք, այլ առաքէ առ արքայն Հայոց Գագիկ եւ առ թագաւորն Վրաց Գուրգէն, զի մեռեալ էր Բագարատ հայր Գուրգենայ, եւ թագաւորեաց Գուրգէն՝ որդի նորա ընդ նորա, տալ զաւրս յաւգնականութիւն:	40:4 Kuropalates David, due to old age and advancing years, did not personally go out against the enemy by war, but sent to the Armenian king Gagik and to the Iberian king Gurgen - for Bagarat [II], Gurgen’s father was no longer alive and his son Gurgen took his place - ask them for troops to help you:
40:5 Եւ Գագկայ յամենայն զաւրացն Հայոց հատեալ զգունդ [ԶՌ] յընտիր ընտիր վառելոցն՝ գումարէ ի ձեռն իշխանաց իշխանին Վահրամայ՝ որդւոյ Գրիգորոյ Պահլաւունւոյ, որ զՄարմաշէն եւ զԲրգներն շինեաց, եւ Սմբատայ մաժիստռոսի՝ որդւոյ Վահրամայ, եւ մարզպանին Աշոտոյ, եւ զաւրք թագաւորին Վանանդեցւոց Աբասայ:	40:5 Gagik sent to him [6,000] selected, well-armed Armenian troops under the command of the prince of princes Vahram, the son of Grigor Pahlawuni, who built Marmarashen and Brgnern, the master of Smbat, the son of Vahram and the marzpan Ashot, accompanied by the troops of the king of the Vanandetsik Abas:
40:6 Նոյնպէս եւ Գուրգէն Վրաց թագաւորն յընտրելոցն իւրոց [ԶՌ] առնեւձիոյ տայ ի ձեռն Փերսի իշխանաց իշխանին՝ որդւոյ Ջոջկայ:	40:6 The king of Iberia Gurgen sent [6,000] excellent cavalry under the command of the prince of princes Peris, son of Jojik:
40:7 Եւ ամենայն բազմութիւն զաւրաց կիւռապաղատին Դաւթի՝ ի ձեռն Գաբրիէլի՝ որդւոյ Ոչոպընտրայ:	40:7 The whole army of David kouropalates was commanded by Gabriel, the son of Ochopentir:
40:8 Որք յառաջ երթեալ ի լեառն Սուկաւ, ի ձորն Աղտից՝ պահէին զառաջս պարսիկ զաւրուն՝ կարծելով նախ ի Բագրեւանդ մտանել:	40:8 All of them went to Mount Sukaw in Akshitk-Dzor and occupied all the passes, believing that the Persian army would first enter Bagrewand:
40:9 Առ որ միաբան հասանէին զաւրքն Հայոց եւ Վրաց եւ չուեալ երթան ի գաւառն Ապահունեաց. բանակին յանդիման բանակին Մամլանայ, ի բարձրաւանդակ ամրագոյն տեղւոջ մի, ի սահմանս գեղջն Ծմբոյ, եւ բազում աւուրս ի նմին տեղւոջ աւթեւանս կալեալ:	40:9 At the appointed time, the Iberian and Armenian troops, having united, went to the Apakhunik district and camped opposite the Mamlan camp on an elevated impregnable place near the village of Cumb:
40:10 Զի ի սաստկութենէ սպային Պարսից զարհուրեալք էին՝ ոչ իշխելով քան զանձաւ տեղի բանակին արտաքս ելանել, այլ միայն աղաւթիւք պաղատանս առ Աստուած վերառաքէին: Նոյնն եւ ամենայն քրիստոնէից աղերսական աղաւթք արտասուաւք սփռեալ լինէին առաջի Աստուծոյ՝ յաւգնականութիւն անձանց եւ զաւրացն կարդալով զանունն ահաւոր:	40:10 For a long time, they remained in this place and did not dare to go beyond the deep place where their camp stood, fearing a numerous Persian army. They only sent prayers to God, and all Christians with tearful prayers called on Him to help themselves and the army, (constantly) repeating His terrible name:
40:11 Եւ թագաւորքն առատաձեռն զողորմութիւնսն աղքատաց բաշխէին եւ զցայգսն՝ պաշտաւն սաղմոսանուագ երգոց ուխտն սրբութեան հանդերձ հայրապետաւն կատարէին:	40:11 The kings with a generous hand distributed alms to the poor and, together with the patriarch, spent the nights in sacred psalmody:
40:12 Եւ իբրեւ գիտաց զաւրն Պարսից, եթէ ոչ կամին նոքա կամաւ իջանել առ նոսա ի պատերազմ, մանաւանդ զսակաւութիւն նոցա գիտացեալ առ իւրեանց բազմութիւնն, յայնժամ յարուցեալ յամսամտին Արեգ ամսոյ, յերեքշաբաթւոջ աւուր ընդ առաւաւտանալն՝ ճակատ պատրաստէին բազմակրկին յաւրինուածով, ռազմ յաւրինէին ընդ երեսս լայն դաշտին դելմաստանեան վահանափակովն, գային մերձենային մաւտ ի բլուրն բանակին Հայոց եւ Վրաց:	40:12 When the Persian army learned that they did not want to descend from the heights to fight and became convinced of their relative minority to their army, then at the beginning of the month of areg, on Tuesday, at the dawn of the day, it began to prepare for battle. - Having lined up on a vast field in many rows (troops defended) by the Delmastanean shield-bearers, the Persians moved and began to approach the hill (on which stood) the Armenian and Iberian camps:
40:13 Որոց եւ տեսութիւնն իսկ ի բազմութենէն ահաւոր թուէր ամենայն տեսողացն, որոց թիւն պատմեցաւ հարիւր հազարաց լինել ընդ հետեւակագունդ եւ ընդ այրուձին Պարսից:	40:13 One sight of them in their abundance terrified the observer; for it was said that the number of Persian infantry and cavalry reached hundred thousand:
40:14 Ձայն տային ի պատերազմ պատրաստել, յառաջ մատչել ի կռուարանն եւ ի տեղի հանդիսին:	40:14 They shouted for a fight, inviting them to march on the battlefield, in an open place:
40:15 Իսկ զաւրքն Հայոց եւ Վրաց զանգիտեալք՝ առաքեն՝ “Ոչ յայսմ աւուր, այլ յայլում աւուր պատերազմեսցուք:	40:15 But the Armenians and Iberians, horrified, sent to them to say that they would not go out to battle today, but at another time:
40:16 Իսկ Պարսիկքն պանծացեալ պերճութեամբ՝ առաքեն դեսպանս առ նոսա՝ “Եթէ կամաւ եւ եթէ ակամայ՝ յայսմ աւուր պատերազմեսցուք:	40:16 The Parsees, in their arrogance, sent ambassadors to them (with a proposal): “Willingly or not, you must join the battle today:
40:17 Բայց նոքա ոչ առին յանձն եւ ոչ հեծան յերիվարսն, այլ մնացին անդէն ի բանակին, միայն սակաւ արք իջեալ առ նոսա՝ մենամարտիկս ելանէին: Եւ մեռան ի Վրաց զաւրուէն [Ե] արք:	40:17 They did not agree and did not mount their horses, remaining in their camp. Only a few people went down to the Parsees for single combat, (during which) five people of the Iberians fell:
40:18 Յայնժամ Պարսկաստանեայքն զպատրաստութիւն պատերազմին թողեալք, զկարգ ճակատուն քակեալք եւ զռազմին յարդարումն լքեալք՝ իւրաքանչիւր ոք ձիարձակ լինէին, յառ յաւար յապուռ դիմէին, իբրեւ ի կապուտ մեռելոց դիականց կամ փախուցելոց, յամենայն կողմանց գային ի վերայ բանակին քրիստոնէից:	40:18 Then the Parsees, forgetting the battle, having upset the front and the battle formation, on their horses rushed from all sides to the camp of the Christians in order to plunder it, considering them already fleeing (from the battlefield) or fallen corpses:
40:19 Իսկ զաւրն Հայոց եւ Վրաց, զի ոչ թագաւոր զոք ունէին, զամենեցունց թագաւորն զՔրիստոս ունելով գլուխ եւ աւգնական՝ առ նա աղաղակէին միաձայն, եւ զզարդ զինուցն զանձամբ առեալ՝ արագապէս յերիվարս աշտանակէին:	40:19 The Armenian and Iberian troops, forgetting about their kings and with one voice calling on the king of all - Christ, as their head and helper, put on their weapons and quickly jumped on their horses:
40:20 Եւ ոչ ըստ աւրինաց պատերազմի ճակատ յաւրինէին, այլ իւրաքանչիւրքն ըստ տոհմից եւ աւագութեան գնդից դիմէին, առիւծաբար մռնչելով՝ յանտառացեալ բազմութիւն բանակին Պարսից:	40:20 They were not built according to the rules of military art, but in groups according to their kind and seniority, like lions with a roar, they rushed at the numerous camp of the Persians, like a forest standing before them:
40:21 Անդ շահատակեալ արագաշարժ շարժմամբ զաւրն Հայոց՝ զաջոյ ձեռամբ ի խռան մեծ խմբին դիմեալ՝ խուռն խոցուածովք խիստ եւ խոր սուսերահար հարկանելով՝ զխժիցն դուժս դարձուցանէին դառն հարուածովք:	40:21 The Armenian detachment, in its swift attack on the solid mass of the right wing of the (enemy) horde, performed miracles (of courage), inflicting frequent cruel and deep wounds and brutally striking, put the barbarians to flight:
40:24 Իսկ Կամրակէլքն գովեալ եղբարք Մէսխունիք վրացական զաւրուն միջամխեալք հարուստ ուժովք՝ ի հարկանելն զհեծեալն կամ զերիվարն կիսակտուր կործանէին:	40:24 Meanwhile, the glorious brothers Mesxuni from the Iberian detachment, crashing (into the crowd of enemies) with extraordinary force, like a blow, cut the (enemy) rider with his horse in half:
40:25 Յորոց յահէ ցիր վայրացն լինէին. եւ ամենայն զաւրն Տայոց տարածելոցն դիպէին, դիթաւալ զդիակունս ի ներքոյ ոտիցն տարածելով, զայս աւրէն նման ձեւոյ աւրինակեալ՝ իբրեւ զհուր յանտառս բորբոքեալ, կամ իբրեւ զարծիւս քաջասլացիկ՝ զհաւուց երամս խուճապեալս:	40:25 The horrified (Persians) fled in different directions and, meeting with the Tayk warriors, amazed, fell dead. It was something like a fire that embraced the forest, or swift-flying eagles that struck terror into flocks of birds:
40:26 Այլ անդ էր տեսանել զարեան վտակս առուք ելեալ եւ գետք յորդէին, դիակունք թաւալեալք, եւ կիսամեռք ընդ մեռելոցն անկեալ դնէին:	40:26 There one could see streams of blood flowing in rivers, lying corpses, half-dying lying next to the dead:
40:27 Յայնժամ Մամլան պակուցեալ՝ Պարսկաստանեաւքն մնացելովք զփախչելն փութային:	40:27 Then the terrified Mamlan with the remaining Persians hastened to flee:
40:28 Որոց հետամուտ եղեալ Հայոց եւ Վրաց զաւրուն՝ սաստիկ հարուածովք հարկանէին՝ ի սուր սուսերի մաշելով զնոսա մինչեւ ի մուտս արեւուն, մինչեւ ի դուռն Արճէշ քաղաքին:	40:28 But the Armenian and Iberian troops followed in his footsteps, inflicting a severe defeat on them, betraying them to the edge of the sword before sunset and (pursuing) to the very gates of the city of Archesh:
40:29 Եւ անտի դարձեալ՝ յաւարի առին զբանակս նոցա, լցեալ բազմութեամբ գանձուց եւ երիվարաց եւ պատուական հանդերձից:	40:29 Returning from there, they took the enemy’s camp filled with great treasures, horses and rich clothes as booty:
40:30 Եւս առաւել այն էր ուրախութիւն, զի քան զայն առաջին հինգ մարդոցն ի մենամարտութեան, որ ի Վրաց զաւրուէն մեռան՝ այլ ո՛չ հարեալ ոք սրով եւ ո՛չ մեռեալ գտաւ յամենայն բազմութեանն Հայոց եւ Վրաց:	40:30 But they were especially pleased that, apart from five people of Iberian soldiers who fell in single combat, not one of the huge number of Armenians and Iberians died, and was wounded below:
40:31 Վասն որոյ ուրախալից ցնծութեամբ դարձան յիւրաքանչիւր աշխարհ՝ փառաւորելով զԱստուած:	40:31 Therefore, with great joy, each of them returned to his own land, glorifying God:
