3:51 Իբրեւ ոչ կալան յանձին ամենեքին, ոչ ինչ կարի ստիպեաց, այլ հրամայեաց մատուցանել նոցա զսովորական կերակուրն, եւ առաւել գինեաւքն յաւելոյր ի տաճարին զխրախութիւն:

 3:51 Although they all refused, he did not force them but ordered that they be offered their usual food, and he increased the merrymaking in the palace with ever more wine:

3:52 Եւ անտի ի դուրս ելեալ ի սրահն արքունի, արգելին զոմանս ի նոցանէ ձեռս յետս կապելով, եւ զխոնջանունսն կնքելով եւ զգուշութեամբ պահելով՝ էր որ զերկուս աւուրս, եւ էր որ զերիս:

 3:52 As they were leaving the royal chamber, some of them were arrested, their hands bound behind them, and the cords of their trousers sealed and carefully tied—some for two days, some for three:

3:53 Բազում եւ այլ եւս յանարժան հարուածս չարչարէին, զոր եւ ոչ ընդ գրով իսկ արժանի համարեցաք արկանել:

 3:53 They also suffered many other ignominious torments, which we did not consider suitable to put in writing:

3:54 Եւ զոմանս ի նոցանէ հեռացուցին եւ քարշեցին յազնուական պատուոյն անարգեալ:

 3:54 Some of them were exiled, deprived of their noble rank, and humiliated:

3:55 Եւ գունդս գունդս դարձեալ գումարէին ի նոցանէ յերկիր հեռաւոր՝ յամուրս անապատին՝ ի մարտ պատերազմի թշնամեացն արքայի. եւ բազմաց իսկ անդէն հասանէր վախճան մահու սրով:

 3:55 Again, many detachments from among these peoples were sent to a distant land to wage war against the king’s enemies in the inaccessible desert. There many died by the sword:

3:56 Եւ զամենեցուն զկարգեալ թոշակն նուազեցուցանէին, քաղցիւ եւ ծարաւով տառապեցուցանէին զնոսա, եւ ձմերոցի տեղիս զդժնեայ վայրսն հրամայէին նոցա. եւ անարգս եւ վատթարս յաչս ամենեցուն զնոսա ցուցանէին:

 3:56 The Persians reduced everyone’s set pay and afflicted them with hunger and thirst. They ordered their winter quarters to be in the harshest places and rendered them dishonorable and base in the eyes of all:

3:57 Իսկ նոքա առ սէրն Քրիստոսի յոյժ խնդութեամբ ընդունէին զամենայն չարչարանսն վասն մեծի յուսոյն, որ առաջի պատրաստեալ կայ պատուիրանապահ համբերողացն:

 3:57 But they, for love of Christ, bore all these fortunes very joyfully for the sake of the great hope which is prepared in advance for those who keep the commandments and endure:

3:58 Որչափ չարութիւն զանարգութիւն բազմացուցանէր, նոքա եւս քան զեւս զաւրանային ի սէրն Քրիստոսի. մանաւանդ զի բազումք ի նոցանէ զգիրս սուրբս ուսեալ էին ի մանկութենէ, զանձինս մխիթարէին եւ զընկերս քաջալերէին, եւ իբրեւ աշտարակ լուսոյ զպաշտաւնն ունէին եւ բազմացուցանէին:

 3:58 The more evil increased their dishonor, the more they were strengthened in the love of Christ. Especially because many of them had studied the Holy Scriptures from their youth, they consoled themselves and encouraged their companions; and like a tower of light they practiced their worship and increased it:

3:59 Վասն որոյ եւ բազումք ի հեթանոսաց, որոց հեշտ եւ ցանկալի ձայնքն թուէին, քաջալերէին զնոսա, եւ ասէին բանս մխիթարութեան, իբրեւ թէ լաւ իցէ մարդոյ մահու չափ ճգնել՝ քան յայդպիսի աւրինաց ուրանալ:

 3:59 Therefore, many of the heathen, to whom their voices seemed sweet and pleasant, encouraged them and spoke words of consolation to the effect that it was better for a man to suffer even death than to deny such a religion:

3:60 Բայց սակայն թէպէտ եւ նոքա առ սէրն Քրիստոսի յոյժ զուարթութեամբ խնդային ըստ ներքին մարդոյն, արտաքին տեսիլն կարի ողորմ էր յաւտարութեան:

 3:60 However, although in their love of Christ they were very happy and joyful in the inner man, their outward appearance was very miserable in their exile:

3:61 Այնպիսի պատուական զինուորութիւն հասեալ էր ի չարաշուք անարգութիւն, եւ հայրենի ազատութիւնն չարաչար կայր ի ծառայութեան մարդախոշոշ բռնաւորին, որ եւ ընդ հեթանոսաց աւրէնս անցանէր արիւնհեղութեամբ, եւ ամենեւին չկարծէր՝ թէ գուցէ այսր ամենայնի վրէժխնդիր յերկինս:

 3:61 Such noble soldiery had attained miserable ignominy, and their ancestral freedom was in cruel subjection to a murderous tyrant who exceeded the traditions of heathens in the shedding of blood and did not at all suppose that there might be revenge for all this in heaven:

3:62 Նա եւ ոչ զերկրաւոր վաստակս ուրուք յիշէր. եւ որ մեծն քան զամենայն է ըստ մարմնաւոր կարգի, քանզի գոյին ոմանք ի նախարարացն, որոց զեղբարս նորա սնուցեալ էր մայրենի կաթամբն իւրեանց, առաւել եւս քան զամենեսեան զնոսա դատէր:

 3:62 Likewise, he did not remember anyone’s earthly services; and what is worse than all else in the human condition, since there were some of the princes who had nourished his brothers with their mothers’ milk, these he condemned even more than all the others:

3:63 Եւ յայսր ամենայնի վերայ այլ եւս չարութիւն խորամանկեաց:

 3:63 In addition to all this he contrived even further wickedness:

3:64 Զմի ոմն ի հաւատարիմ ծառայից իւրոց ի գործ առաքէր յերկիրն Հայոց՝ որում անուն էր Դենշապուհ. որ եկեալ հասեալ հրամանաւ արքունի, զողջոյն բերեալ զմեծ թագաւորին, եւ խաղաղասէր կեղծաւորութեամբ աշխարհագիր առնել ամենայն երկրին Հայոց ի թողութիւն հարկաց եւ ի թեթեւութիւն ծանրութեան այրուձիոյն:

 3:64 He sent one of his trusted servants, called Denshapuh, on a mission to Armenia. He came at the royal command, bringing the great king’s greetings, and made a census of the whole land of Armenia with soothing hypocrisy as if for the alleviation of taxes and the lightening of the burden of the cavalry:

3:65 Թէպէտ եւ ի վերին երեսս կեղծաւորէր, այլ ի ներքոյ խորհուրդք չարագոյն ցուցանէին:

 3:65 Although outwardly he dissimulated, yet within his plans were revealed as evil:

3:66 Առաջին, զազատութիւն եկեղեցւոյն արկանէր ի ծառայութիւն:

 3:66 First: he cast the freedom of the church into slavery:

3:67 Երկրորդ, միայնակեաց քրիստոնեայք որ բնակեալ էին ի վանորայս, ընդ նովին աշխարհագրով էարկ:

 3:67 Second: he included in the same census the Christian monks living in monasteries:

3:68 Երրորդ, զհարկ աշխարհին առաւել ծանրացոյց:

 3:68 Third: he increased the tax burden on the country:

3:69 Չորրորդ, զնախարարեանն բանսարկութեամբ արկ ընդ միմեանս, եւ յամենայն տան արար խռովութիւն:

 3:69 Fourth: by slander he pitted the nobility against each other, and caused dissension in every family:

3:70 Եւ զայս ամենայն առնէր՝ թերեւս զմիաբանութիւնն քակեսցէ, եւ զուխտն եկեղեցւոյն ցրուեսցէ, եւ զմիայնակեացսն փախուսցէ, եւ զշինականսն վատնեսցէ. եւ առ յոյժ աղքատութեանն՝ ակամայ դիմեսցեն յաւրէնս մոգուց:

 3:70 He did all this in the hope of breaking their unity, scattering the clergy of the church, driving away the monks, and wearing out the peasants, so that in their great poverty they might unwillingly turn to the religion of the magi:

3:71 Եւ ե՛ւս չարագոյն հինգերորդն. քանզի որ հազարապետն էր աշխարհին, իբրեւ զհայր վերակացու համարեալ էր աշխարհականաց քրիստոնէից. գրգռեաց յարոյց զամբաստանութիւն ի վերայ նորա, եւ հանեալ զնա ի գործոյն՝ փոխանակ նորա պարսիկ ած յաշխարհն, եւ մեւս եւս մոգպետ՝ դատաւոր աշխարհին, զի զեկեղեցւոյն փառսն աղաւաղեսցեն:

 3:71 And even more pernicious was the fifth. The governor (hazarapet) A of the country had been regarded as a father and overseer by the Christians of the land, but he incited accusations against him, deprived him of office, and in his place brought a Persian to the country. In addition, he also brought a chief-magus as judge of the land, so that they might corrupt the glory of the church:

3:72 Բայց սակայն թէպէտ եւ ամենայն գործքս այս դժնեայ էին, չեւ էր ուրուք ձեռն արկեալ յայտնի յեկեղեցին. վասն այնորիկ եւ ոչ ոք ընդդիմացաւ նմա, թէպէտ եւ էր ծանրութիւն հարկացն:

 3:72 However, although all these actions were so cruel, no one yet openly laid hand on the church. Therefore, nobody opposed him despite the severity of the taxes:

3:73 Քանզի ուստի արժան էր առնուլ հարիւր դահեկանաւ չափ, կրկին առնուին. նոյնպէս եւ եպիսկոպոսաց եւ երիցանց դնէին, ոչ միայն շինաց, այլ եւ աւերակաց:

 3:73 For where it was suitable to take up to a hundred dahekan they took twice as much. Likewise, they taxed both bishops and priests, not merely of inhabited lands but also of desolate areas:

3:74 Նա եւ բնաւ ո՞վ իսկ կարէ պատմել վասն ծանրութեան մտից եւ սակից, բաժից եւ հասից լերանց եւ դաշտաց եւ մայրեաց:

 3:74 So, who indeed could describe the severity of dues and taxes, excises and levies on the mountains and plains and forests:

3:75 Ոչ ըստ արքունի արժանաւորութեանն առնուին, այլ հինաբար յափշտակելով, մինչեւ ինքեանք իսկ մեծապէս զարմանային, թէ ուստի այս ամենայն գանձ ելանէ՝ զիա՞րդ շէն կայցէ աշխարհն:

 3:75 They did not act in accordance with royal dignity but raided like brigands, until they themselves were greatly amazed as to whence all this treasure came and how the country remained prosperous:
