2:26 Յայժմ վասն ձերոյ ճշմարիտ հաւատոցն եւ ի մեզ փոքր ի շատէ խնայէին. եւ արդ ի պատճառս ձեր եւ զմեզ անողորմ դատին:

 2:26 Up to the present, for the sake of your true faith, they spared us a little; but now because of you they judge us mercilessly:

2:27 Ոչ միայն զանձանց դատաստան տալոց էք առաջի ահեղ ատենին Աստուծոյ, այլ եւ բազմաց ամենեցուն՝ որ ի ձեր պատճառս եւ զնոսա եւս չարչարեսցեն:

 2:27 You will have to give a reckoning before God’s fearful tribunal not only for yourselves but also for many others whom they will torment because of you:

2:28 Զայս եւ առաւել քան զսոյն խաւսեցան ընդ մեծամեծս աւագանւոյն, եւ յաւելին ցաւս ի վերայ ցաւոց:

 2:28 This and more besides they said to the greatest of the nobility, piling pain on pain:

2:29 Յայտնել եւ ցուցանել նոցա զխորհուրդն ոչ կարէին, լռել եւ չառնել պատասխանի անհնար էր. հեղձամղձուկ եղեալ մեծապէս յարտասուս հարկանէին:

 2:29 The latter were unable to reveal or indicate their intention, but it was impossible to remain silent and make no response. Choked, they burst into intense weeping:

2:30 Ընդ նոսին դառնացեալ լսողք եւ տեսողք յանմխիթար սուգ լինէին ամենեքեան:

 2:30 With them the embittered audience also all mourned inconsolably:

2:31 Յայնմ ժամանակի քահանայքն որ անդէն ի զաւրուն էին, առ չժուժալ սրտիցն բարկութեան՝ քակեալ որոշեցան ի նախարարացն եւ յամենայն բազմութենէն. եւ զմի ոմն դեսպան ձիով փութապէս առաքեցին յաշխարհն Հայոց:

 2:31 Then the priests who were there in the army, unable to endure the anger of their hearts, separated themselves from the princes and all the troops and sent a messenger by horse in haste to Armenia:

2:32 Գոյժի բերան առեալ եւ զաւձիս պատառեալ, հասեալ ի ժողովս եպիսկոպոսացն, մեծապէս յարտասուս հարեալ, կայր եւ պատմէր զամենայն անցս չարչարանացն. այլ ոչ յայտնէր նոցա զծածկութիւն խորհրդոցն:

 2:32 With the sad news in his mouth and with his collar rent, he reached the group of bishops; bursting into profuse tears, he related all the details of the tortures, but he did not reveal to them the secret plans:

2:33 Յայնմ ժամանակի սփռեցան եպիսկոպոսքն յիւրաքանչիւր իշխանութիւնս, եւ առաքեցին զքորեպիսկոպոսս ի գեաւղս եւ յագարակս եւ ի բազում ամուրս լեռնային գաւառացն:

 2:33 Then the bishops scattered to each one’s diocese, and they sent chorepiscopi to the villages and estates and to many castles in the mountainous provinces:

2:34 Դրդեցին ժողովեցին զբազմութիւն արանց եւ կանանց, շինականաց եւ ազատաց, զքահանայից եւ զմենակեցաց. խրատ եդին, պնդեցին եւ արարին զամենեսեան զինուորս Քրիստոսի:

 2:34 They urged the populace to assemble—the men and women, peasants and nobles, priests and monks. They exhorted and strengthened them, and made them all soldiers of Christ:

2:35 Եւ յառաջին բան խորհրդին այս հաստատեցաւ. «Ձեռն եղբաւր հարազատի ի մերձաւոր իւր լիցի, որ անցեալ իցէ ըստ ուխտ պատուիրանին Աստուծոյ. եւ մի՛ խնայեսցէ հայր յորդի, եւ մի՛ ակն առնուցու որդի հաւր պատուոյն:

 2:35 Their prime resolve was decided thus: “Let the hand of blood brother be upon his relative who may transgress the covenant of God’s ordinance. Let not a father spare his son, nor a son respect his father’s dignity:

2:36 Կին կռուեսցի ընդ առն ամուսնոյ, եւ ծառայ դարձցի ընդդէմ տեառն իւրոյ:

 2:36 Let a wife strive with her husband, and a servant turn against his master:

2:37 Աւրէնք աստուածայինք կացցեն թագաւորի վերայ ամենայնի, եւ ի նմին աւրինաց ընկալցին յանցաւորք զպատիժս դատապարտութեան:

 2:37 May the divine Law rule over all, and by the same Law may transgressors receive the punishment of their condemnation:

2:38 Եւ իբրեւ այս այսպէս հաստատեցաւ կազմեցաւ, երեւեցան ամենեքեան զինեալք եւ սաղաւարտեալք, սուր ընդ մէջ եւ վահան ի ձեռին՝ ոչ միայն արանց քաջաց, այլ եւ կանանց առնականաց:

 2:38 When this had been so confirmed and established, they all mustered armed and helmeted, girt with a sword and shield in hand, not only valiant men but also virile women:

2:39 Իսկ գունդն Հայոց ամենայն աւգնականաւքն հանդերձ եւ մոգացն բազմութեամբ յամսեանն չորրորդի եկին հասին յաշխարհն Հայոց, ի գիւղաքաղաք մի մեծ՝ որում անուն էր Անգղ:

 2:39 Now the Armenian troops with all their auxiliaries and the crowd of magi arrived in Armenia in the fourth month, at an important town called Angḷ:

2:40 Բանակեցան, բոլորեցան, զետեղեցան, եւ յամենայն կողմանց անդր ժողովեցան, եւ էին անթիւ բազմութիւն:

 2:40 They pitched camp together and settled in; from all sides they gathered there, forming an innumerable multitude:

2:41 Եւ եղեւ յետ աւուրց քսան եւ հնգից մոգպետն ինքնին մոգաւքն հանդերձ հասանէր մեծաւ զաւրութեամբ՝ քակել զդրունս եկեղեցւոյն յաւուր միաշաբաթուն. զփորձ առնուլ կամէր զառաջարկութեան գործոյն:

 2:41 After twenty-five days the chief-magus himself and the magi arrived with a great force in order to break down the doors of the church on a Sunday. He intended to put the proposed action to the test:

2:42 Իսկ սուրբն Ղեւոնդ երէց միաբանութեամբ առաջին խորհրդակցաւքն եւ բազում ուխտիւ ի տեղւոջ անդ պատրաստական դիպեցաւ:

 2:42 But the holy priest Ḷevond, in concert with his leading supporters and many clergy, stood ready at the spot:

2:43 Թէպէտ եւ ոչ էր տեղեկագոյն մտաց. ամենեցուն նախարարացն, եւ ոչ զաւրութեան ուժոյ մոգպետին, ոչ ինչ եկաց մնաց ամենայն եպիսկոպոսացն, եւ ոչ առ սակաւ մի համբեր անաւրէն իշխանին թողացուցանել. այլ բազում ամբոխ աղաղակի զաւրացն եւ մոգացն հասուցանէր:

 2:43 Although he was not informed of the intentions of all the princes, nor of the strength of the chief magus’s force, he did not wait for all the bishops, nor did he give way for a moment to the impious ruler, but he brought a great tumult on the army and magi:

2:44 Քանզի վիրգս ի ձեռն առեալ՝ զկառափունս մոգացն եւ մոգպետին ջարդեցին. փախստական յիւրաքանչիւր վանս արկանէին, եւ ինքեանք զպաշտաւնն բարձրացուցեալ յեկեղեցւոջն՝զտէրունական կանոնն կատարէին, մինչեւ ի նոյն միաշաբաթին անդադար լինելով:

 2:44 Grasping stones, they aimed their blows at the skulls of the magi and chief-magus, forcing them to flee to their camps. They themselves offered the Liturgy in the church and continued the Lord’s service throughout the whole Sunday:

2:45 Եւ յետ այսր տագնապի խռովութեան՝ յամենայն կողմանց յաշխարհէն Հայոց բազմութիւն արանց եւ կանանց ի տեղին հասանէին:

 2:45 After this dangerous disturbance, from all parts of Armenia a crowd of men and women reached the place:

2:46 Եւ անդ էր տեսանել զմեծ աղէտ տարակուսին. ոմանք զդերարտաւսր արձակելով իբր յաղբերականց հոսէին յաչաց իւրեանց. այլքն բարձրաճիչ աղաղակաւ՝ իբր այն թէ զերկինս դողացուցանէին, իսկ կէսքն խիզախելով եւ ի զէնս ընթանալով` զմահ քան զկեանս ընտրէին:

 2:46 There one could see the great agony of doubt. Some let forth torrents of tears which flowed from their eyes like streams; others let forth loud shrieks as if they would shake the heavens; while others took courage and ran to arms, preferring death to life:

2:47 Իսկ ոմանք ի սուրբ ուխտէ եկեղեցւոյն՝ զաւետարանն ի ձեռն առեալ, աղաւթիւք առ Աստուած կարդային. եւ այլք ըղձանային զպատառումն երկրին, զի անձանց լիցի գերեզման:

 2:47 Some of the holy clergy of the church took the Gospel in their hands and addressed prayers to God. Others desired the earth to open that it might become their tomb:

2:48 Եւ այսպէս շտապ տագնապի ի վերայ մոգպետին հասուցանէին:

 2:48 Thus, they brought fearful anguish on the chief-magus:

2:49 Բազում անգամ աղաչէր զաւգնականսն իւր, զի ի մահուանէ կարասցեն զնա ապրեցուցանել, եւ ողջանդամ անդէն յարքունիս հասուցանել:

 2:49 He frequently begged his assistants to rescue him from death and bring him back to the court safe and sound:

2:50 Այլ վասն գործոյն յոր եկեալն էր՝ ստիպէր զնոսա եւ ասէր. «Թող գրեմ եւ ցուցանեմ մեծ թագաւորին, զի ի բաց թողցէ զայսպիսի իրաց առաջարկութիւն. զի եթէ եւ ինքեանք աստուածքն եկեսցեն մեզ յաւգնութիւն, չէ հնար աւրինացս մոգութեան ի Հայս առնուլ զհաստատութիւն. որպէս զփորձ առի զմիաբանութեան ուխտին եկեղեցւոյ:

 2:50 In the matter for which he had come he pressed them, saying: “Let me write and indicate to the great king that he should abandon such a project as this. For even if the gods themselves were to come to our aid, it would be impossible for the religion of magism to become firmly established in Armenia, as I have tested the unity of the covenant of the church:
