 1:0 CHAPTER FIVE - For a Second Time the Armenians Oppose the Persian King in War:

1:1 Մեծ է սէրն Աստուծոյ քան զամենայն մեծութիւն երկրաւոր. եւ այնպէս աներկեւղս առնէ զմարդիկ՝ իբրեւ զանմարմին զաւրս հրեշտակաց, որպէս անդստին ի սկզբանէ է տեսանել զբազումս բազում անգամ ի բազում տեղիս:

 1:1 THE love of God is superior to all earthly greatness and makes men as fearless as the incorporeal hosts of angels—as can be seen very many times in many places from the very beginning of the world:

1:2 Մարդիկ, որ սիրովն Աստուծոյ իբրեւ զինու վառեալք էին, ոչ ինչ խնայեցին զանգիտելով իբրեւ զանարի՝ գոլով վատասիրտք, կամ ի մահ անձանց, կամ յափշտակութիւն ընչից, կամ ի խողխողումն սիրելեաց, կամ ի գերութիւն ընտանեաց, ելանել ի հայրենի երկրէն եւ անկանել ի ստրկութիւն յաւտարութեան. առ ոչինչ համարեցան զայս ամենայն անցս չարչարանացն. այլ միայն միաբան կալ ընդ Աստուծոյ, զի ի նմանէ միայն մի՛ գերի ելցեն. եւ ամենայն երեւելի մեծութեանս զնա բաւական համարեցան՝ ընտրեալ ի միտս իւրեանց:

 1:2 Men who were armed with the love of God for a weapon shrank at nothing in dread, as would cowards who are feeble-hearted. Their own death or loss of possessions, the massacre of their loved ones or the captivity of their families, the leaving of their native land to be enslaved abroad—all these misfortunes they reckoned as nothing if they could only remain united with God and if only, they were not deprived of him. They reckoned him to be more satisfying than all apparent greatness, having chosen thus in their hearts:

1:3 Եւ զուրացութիւնն մեռելութիւն վարկանէին, եւ զմահ վասն Աստուծոյ՝ անանց կենդանութիւն, եւ ծառայել յերկրի՝ ազատութիւն կենաց իւրեանց, եւ ընկենուլ զանձինս յաւտարութիւն՝ ընդ Աստուծոյ գիւտից:

 1:3 Apostasy they accounted as death, and death for God’s sake as everlasting life; to serve on earth as freedom for their lives, and they recognized exile as familiarity with God:

1:4 Որպէս յայսմ ժամանակի տեսաք աչաւք մերովք, զի զնոյն նահատակութիւն նահատակեցաւ եւ աշխարհս Հայոց:

 1:4 So, did we observe with our own eyes at that time that the land of Armenia fought with similar heroism:

1:5 Քանզի իբրեւ ետես մեծն Վարդան զերկպառակութիւն աշխարհին իւրոյ, ոչ ինչ թերահաւատութեամբ զանգիտեաց:

 1:5 Now when Vardan the Great saw the discord of his country, he experienced no hesitation or doubt:

1:6 Թէպէտ եւ ստուգեալ գիտաց զբազմաց այլոց եւս զերկմտութիւն, որ դեռ եւս ընդ նմա միաբանեալք էին, քաջալերեցաւ յանձն իւր եւ քաջալերեաց զզաւրսն իւր. քանզի ինքն իսկ բռնացեալ ունէր զթագաւորանիստ տեղիսն միաբանութեամբ նախարարացն, որ ոչ քակեցան ի սուրբ ուխտէն:

 1:6 Although he well knew that many others of those still united with him were vacillating, he took heart and encouraged his soldiers, for he had a firm hold on the royal estates, in union with the nobles who had not abandoned the holy covenant:

1:7 Հրաման տուեալ ամենայն զաւրացն ժողովել յԱրտաշատ քաղաք, փոխանակ յետս կացելոցն որ ելին զհետ իշխանին Սիւնեաց, զեղբարս կամ զորդիս կամ զեղբարցն որդիս ի տեղի նոցա մատուցանէր, եւ զիւրաքանչիւր զաւրս տայր նոցա, զի դեռ եւս ինքն ունէր զամենայն աշխարհն:

 1:7 He commanded all the troops to muster at the city of Artashat; in place of those who had deserted and followed the prince of Siunik he appointed in their stead their brothers, or sons, or nephews, handing over to them each one’s troops, since he still controlled the whole country:

1:8 Եւ փութով ամենեքեան ի տեղի պատերազմին եկեալ հասանէին իւրաքանչիւր զաւրաւք եւ ամենայն պատրաստութեամբ, նոքա եւ որ բունքն հաստատուն կացեալ էին ի տեղւոջն:

 1:8 In haste they all reached the battlefield with each one’s troops and in full preparedness, these and all who had remained loyal:

1:9 Ներշապուհ Արծրունի, Եւ Խորէն Խորխոռունի, Եւ ինքն Սպարապետն, Եւ Արտակ Պալունի, Եւ Վահան Ամատունի, Եւ Գիւտն Վահեւունեաց, Եւ Թաթուլ Դիմաքսեան, Եւ Արշաւիր Արշարունի, Եւ Շմաւոն Անձաւացի, Եւ Տաճատ Գնթունի, Եւ Ատոմ Գնունի, Եւ Խոսրով Գաբեղեան, Եւ Կարէն Սահառունի, Եւ Հմայեակ Դիմաքսեան, Եւ մեւս եւս այլ Գազրիկ Դիմաքսեան, Ներսեհ Քաջբերունի, Փարսման Մանդակունի, Եւ Արսէն Ընձայացի, Եւ Այրուկ Սղկունի, Եւ Վրէն Տաշրացի, Եւ Ապրսամ Արծրունեացն, Եւ Շահխոռապետն արքունի, Եւ Խուրս Սրուանձտեաց, Քողեանքն եւ Ակէացիքն եւ Տրպատունիքն, եւ զաւրքն Ռշտունեաց, եւ ամենայն գործակալքն արքունի իւրաքանչիւր զաւրաւքն հանդերձ:

 1:9 Nershapuh Artsruni, Khoren Khorkhoruni, The sparapet himself, Artak Paluni, Vahan Amatuni, Giwt from the house of the Vahevunik, Tatul Dimaksean, Arshavir Arsharuni, Shmavon Andzavatsi, Tachat Gntuni, Atom Gnuni, Khosrov Gabelean, Karen Saharuni, Hmayeak Dimaksean, And another Dimaksean, Gazrik, Nerseh Kajberuni, Parsman Mandakuni, Arsen Endzayatsi, Ayruk Sḷkuni, Vren Tashratsi, Aprsam of the Artsrunik, The royal shahkhorapet, Khurs Srvandzteats, The Koḷeank, The Akeatsik, The Trpatunik, The troops of the Rshtunik. And all the royal officials, each with his troops:

1:10 Սոքա ամենեքեան համագունդք հասանէին ի գործ պատերազմին ի դաշտն Արտազու եւ լինէր հանդէս համարուն վաթսուն եւ վեց հազար այր ընդ հեծեալ եւ ընդ հետեւակ:

 1:10 All these joined forces for war on the plain of Artaz for a muster of sixty-six thousand men, infantry, and cavalry:

1:11 Եկին ընդ նոսա սուրբքն Յովսէփ եւ Ղեւոնդ երէց, եւ բազում եւ այլ քահանայք, եւ եւս բազմագոյն պաշտաւնեայք:

 1:11 In their company came the holy Yoseph and the priest Ḷevond, with many other priests and even more deacons:

1:12 Քանզի ոչ ինչ զանգիտեցին եւ նոքա գալ ընդ նոսին ի գործ պատերազմին. զի ոչ եթէ մարմնական համարէին զկռիւն, այլ հոգեւոր առաքինութեան. ցանկային մահակից լինել քաջ նահատակացն:

 1:12 For these too had no hesitation in coming with the others to war; since they considered the struggle to be in no way for a material cause but for spiritual virtue, they desired to share the death of the valiant martyrs:

1:13 Սկսաւ սպարապետն խաւսել միաբանութեամբ նախարարացն ընդ զաւրսն եւ ասէ:

 1:13 The sparapet, in the company of the nobles, began to address the troops, saying:

1:14 Ի բազում պատերազմունս մտեալ է իմ, եւ ձեր ընդ իս. է ուրեք՝ զի քաջապէս յաղթեցաք թշնամեացն, եւ է ուրեք՝ զի նոքա մեզ յաղթեցին. եւ բազում այն է՝ որ յաղթող գտեալ եմք եւ ոչ յաղթեալք:

 1:14 You and I have participated in many battles. Sometimes we have valiantly beaten the enemy, and sometimes they have defeated us. More often, though, we have been the victors than the defeated:

1:15 Եւ միանգամայն այն ամենայն էին մարմնոյ պարծանք. քանզի հրամանաւ անցաւոր թագաւորին մարտնչէաք:

 1:15 But all these were for earthly distinction, as we fought at the command of a temporal king:

1:16 Որ փախչէր, վատանուն յաշխարհի երեւէր, եւ անողորմ մահ ի նմանէ գտանէր. իսկ որ քաջութեամբ յառաջ մատչէր, քաջ անուն ազգի ժառանգէր, եւ պարգեւս մեծամեծս յանցաւոր եւ ի մահկանացու թագաւորէն ընդունէր:

 1:16 Whoever fled was regarded as a coward in the land and suffered a merciless death. But he who advanced bravely acquired a reputation for valor and received great gifts from the temporal and mortal king:

1:17 Եւ մեք իսկ աւասիկ յիւրաքանչիւր մարմինս ունիմք վէրս եւ սպիս բազումս. եւ բազում այն քաջութիւն իցէ, վասն որոյ առեալ իցէ եւ պարգեւս մեծամեծս:

 1:17 So now we have many wounds and scars on our bodies, and many acts of valor have been performed for which we received great rewards:

1:18 Անարգ եւ անաւգուտ զքաջութիւնսն համարիմ, եւ առ ոչինչ զպարգեւսն բազումս. վասն զի ամենեքեան խափանելոց են:

 1:18 Yet I regard those acts of valor to be worthless and profitless and I count as naught the many rewards, since they all will pass away:

1:19 Իսկ արդ եթէ վասն մահականացու հրամանատուին զայն արութիւնս կատարէաք, ո՛րչափ եւս առաւել վասն անմահ թագաւորին մերոյ, որ Տէրն է կենդանեաց եւ մեռելոց, եւ դատելոց է զամենայն մարդ ըստ գործոց իւրոց:

 1:19 Now if we accomplished these deeds of valor for a mortal commander, how much more will we do for our immortal king, who is Lord of the living and the dead and who will judge every man according to his works:

1:20 Ապաքէն եթէ կարի շատ յառաջ մատուցեալ ծերացայց, սակայն ելանելոց եմք ի մարմնոյ աստի, զի մտցուք առ Աստուած կենդանի, որ ոչ եւս ելանիցեմք ի նմանէ:

 1:20 So even if I were to attain a very advanced age, yet we would still have to leave the body to enter the presence of the living God, from whom we shall be separated no more:

1:21 Արդ աղաչեմ զձեզ, ո՛վ քաջ նիզակակիցք իմ. մանաւանդ զի բազումք ի ձէնջ լաւագոյնք էք քան զիս արութեամբ, եւ գահու ի վեր ըստ հայրենի պատուոյն. բայց յորժամ ձերով կամաւք եւ յաւժարութեամբ առաջնորդ եւ զաւրագլուխ ձեզ կացուցէք, հեշտ եւ բաղձալի թուեսցին բանք իմ ի լսելիս մեծամեծաց եւ փոքունց:

 1:21 So, I beseech you, my valiant comrades, especially because many of you have surpassed me in valor and are superior in ancestral rank. But as of your own free will you have appointed me your leader and general, may my words seem sweet and agreeable to the ears of both the greatest and the least:

1:22 Մի՛ երկուցեալ զանգիտեսցուք ի բազմութենէ հեթանոսացն, եւ մի՛ յահագին սրոյ առն մահկանացուի զթիկունս դարձուսցուք. զի եթէ տացէ Տէր յաղթութիւն ի ձեռս մեր, սատակեսցուք զզաւրութիւն նոցա, զի բարձրասցի կողմն ճշմարտութեան. եւ եթէ հասեալ իցէ ժամանակ կենաց մերոց սուրբ մահուամբ պատերազմիս, ընկալցուք խնդութեամբ սրտիւ. բայց միայն յարութիւնս քաջութեան վատութիւն մի՛ խառնեսցուք:

 1:22 Do not be afraid of the multitude of the heathen; do not turn your backs to the fearsome sword of a mortal man; for if the Lord puts victory in our grasp, we shall destroy their power so that the cause of truth may be exalted. And if the time has come to end our lives in this battle with a holy death, let us accept it with joyful hearts—provided only we do not mingle cowardice with valor and bravery:

1:23 Մանաւանդ զի անմոռաց է ինձ, յիշելով զիմ եւ զոմանց ի ձէնջ, ի ժամանակին՝ զի զանաւրէն իշխանն խաբեցաք պատրեցաք իբրեւ զմանուկ մի տղայ անպիտան. իբր այն եթէ ի վերին երեսս զկամս նորա ամբարշտութեանն կատարեցաք. բայց ի ծածուկ զխորհուրդս Տէր ինքնին վկայէ մեզ, ո՛րպէս անքակ կացեալ եմք ի նմանէ:

 1:23 Especially since I cannot forget—remembering how I and some of you on that occasion cheated and deceived the lawless prince like an insignificant young child by outwardly fulfilling his impious wishes—but the Lord himself bears us witness how in our secret thoughts we remained united with him:

1:24 Զոր եւ դուք ինքնին իսկ գիտէք. վասն սիրելեաց մերոց, որ ի մեծի նեղութեան էին, հնարս խնդրէաք վասն յանդորր հանելոյ, զի նոքաւք հանդերձ մարտ եդեալ կռուեսցուք ընդ անաւրէն իշխանին վասն հայրենի աստուածատուր աւրինացն:

 1:24 You yourselves well know how we sought means of comforting our friends who were in great tribulation, so that we might struggle together against the impious prince for our ancestral and divinely-bestowed religion:

1:25 Եւ իբրեւ նոցա ոչ ինչ կարացաք աւգնել, անհնար լիցի այս՝ եթէ վասն մարմնաւոր սիրոյ զԱստուած ընդ մարդկան փոխանակիցեմք:

 1:25 And since we were unable to help them, let it also be impossible that for the sake of human love we exchange God for men:
