3:51 Եւ նորա գտեալ ժամանակ անձինն պարապոյ, հարկեցաւ զանձն ի մահ դնել. լաւ համարեցաւ մեռանել ի պատերազմի, քան ուրացութեամբ ունել զթագաւորութիւնն:

 3:51 So, finding the occasion favorable, he was constrained to risk death; he reckoned it better to die in war than to rule his kingdom as an apostate:

3:52 Վասն այսր ամենայնի յապաղումն եղեւ արձակելոյն նոցա յաշխարհն:

 3:52 This was the cause of all the delay in the Armenian nobles’ release and return to their country:

3:53 Իսկ կրտսեր որդւոյն Յազկերտի դայեակն, Ռահամ անուն ի Միհրան տոհմէն, թէպէտ եւ ետես զգունդն Արեաց ընդ երկուս բաժանեալ, սակայն կիսովն գազանաբար յարձակեցաւ ի վերայ երէց որդւոյ թագաւորին. հար, սատակեաց զգունդն, եւ ձերբակալ արարեալ զորդի թագաւորին՝ անդէն ի տեղւոջն հրամայէր սպանանել:

 3:53 Now the tutor of Yazkert’s younger son, Raham by name from the family of Mihran, although he saw that the army of the Aryans was divided into two, nonetheless with one half he ferociously attacked the king’s elder son. He defeated and massacred his army, and capturing the king’s son ordered him to be put to death on the spot:

3:54 Եւ զմնացեալ զաւրսն ածէր հաւանեցուցանէր, եւ առնէր միաբանութիւն ամենայն Արեաց գնդին. եւ թագաւորեցուցանէր զիւր սանն, որում անուն էր Պերոզ:

 3:54 The surviving troops he brought into submission, unifying the whole army of the Aryans. Then he crowned his own protege, who was named Peroz:

3:55 Զի թէպէտ եւ Արեաց աշխարհին առնէր մեծապէս խաղաղութիւն, սակայն Աղուանից արքայն ոչ կամէր նուաճել անդրէն ի ծառայութիւն. այլ խրամատեաց զպահակն Ճորայ, եւ անցոյց յայն կոյս զզաւրսն Մասքթաց. միաբանեաց զմետասան թագաւորս զլեառն որդեայսն, եւ ընդդէմ եկաց պատերազմաւ Արեաց գնդին, եւ բազում վնաս արար զաւրացն արքունի:

 3:55 Although profound peace had been brought to the land of the Aryans, the king of Albania did not wish to submit, but breached the Pass of Chor and brought through to this side the troops of the Massagetae. Uniting with the eleven kings of the mountains, he waged war against the Aryan army and inflicted much damage on the royal forces:

3:56 Թէպէտ եւ երկիցս եւ երիցս ետուն հրովարտակս աղաչանաց, ոչ ինչ կարացին ածել զայրն ի հաւանութիւն. այլ գրով եւ պատգամաւ յանդիմանէր զնոսա վասն զուր աւերածի աշխարհին Հայոց:

 3:56 Although they sent letters of entreaty two and three times, they were unable to bring him to terms. But in writing and by messages he blamed them for the pointless devastation of Armenia:

 3:57 He reminded them of the death of the nobles and the sufferings of the prisoners:

3:58 Ի վերայ այնչափ սիրոյ եւ վաստակոց, փոխանակ կեանս առնելոյ՝ զարեւ հատէք, ասէր:

 3:58 In return for so much devotion and service,” he said, “instead of granting their lives you killed them:

3:59 Լաւ լիցի ինձ, ասէ, զնոցա չարչարանսն յանձն իմ առնուլ, քան թողուլ զքրիստոնէութիւնն:

 3:59 It would be better for me to endure their tortures than to abandon Christianity:

3:60 Եւ իբրեւ տեսին, թէ ոչ բռնութեամբ եւ ոչ սիրով կարացաք ածել ի հաւանութիւն, գանձս սաստիկս ետուն տանել յաշխարհն Խայլանդրաց, բացին զդրունս Ալանաց եւ հանին գունդ բազում ի Հոնաց, եւ կռուեցան տարի մի ընդ Աղուանից արքայի:

 3:60 When they saw that they had not been able to bring him to terms either by force or by kind treatment, they had much treasure taken to the land of the Khaylandurk; they opened the Pass of the Alans, brought through a numerous force of Huns, and warred for a year with the Albanian king:

3:61 Թէպէտ եւ թաւթափեցան եւ ցրուեցան զաւրքն իւր ի նմանէ, սակայն զնա ոչ կարացին հնազանդել. այլ եւ հարուածք եւս մեծամեծք հասին ի վերայ նոցա, էր որ կռուով եւ էր որ ախտիւ չարչարանաւք:

 3:61 Although his troops were dispersed and scattered away from him, not only were they unable to subject him but terrible afflictions befell them, some through the war and others by painful disease:

3:62 Եւ յայնչափ ժամանակաց ընդերկարել պաշարմանն, մեծ կէս աշխարհին աւերեցաւ, այլ ոչ ոք ի նմանէ երկմտեալ բաժանեցաւ:

 3:62 So long did the blockade last that the greater part of the country was ravaged, yet no one vacillated or deserted him:

3:63 Յղեաց առ նա դարձեալ թագաւորն Պարսից. «Զքոյրդ իմ, ասէ, եւ զքեռորդիդ ի բաց տուր ածել, զի ի բնէ մոգք էին եւ դու քրիստոնեայ արարեր, եւ աշխարհդ քեզ լիցի:

 3:63 The Persian king sent another message to him: “Have my sister and my niece sent out, for they were originally magi and you made them Christians. Then your country will be yours:

3:64 Իսկ սքանչելի այրն ոչ ի տէրութեանն վերայ կռուէր, այլ յաստուածպաշտութեանն:

 3:64 Now this wonderful man was not fighting for power but for piety:

3:65 Զմայրն եւ զկինն ետ տանել, եւ զաշխարհն բովանդակ ի բաց եթող. եւ ինքն զաւետարանն առ եւ յաշխարհէն ի բաց կամէր գնալ:

 3:65 He sent off his mother and wife, completely renounced the world, took the Gospel, and wished to leave his country:

3:66 Զայս իբրեւ լուաւ թագաւորն, կարի զեղջ եւ ապաշաւ անկանէր ի միտս նորա, եւ զամենայն վնասս իրացն զհարբն իւրով արկանէր:

 3:66 When the king heard this, he was greatly afflicted with remorse and regret and placed the blame for all the harm on his father:

3:67 Անսուտ երդումն կնքէր եւ տայր տանել առ նա, եթէ յաշխարհէդ միայն մի՛ գնար, եւ զինչ ասես առնեմ:

 3:67 He sealed a solemn oath and had it brought to him, to this effect: “Only do not leave your country and I shall do what you say:

3:68 Խնդրեաց զմանկութեան սեպհականն, զոր հաւր իւրոյ շնորհեալ էր նմա ի տղայութեանն հազար երդ. էառ զայն ի թագաւորէն, եւ նստաւ ի նմա միայնակեցաւք հանդերձ:

 3:68 He requested the property of his youth, for when he was young his father had granted him a thousand houses. This he received from the king, and there he settled with the monks:

3:69 Եւ այնպէս հանապազորդեաց զինքն յաստուածային պաշտամանն, զի եւ չյիշէր ամենեւին, թէ եւ թագաւոր լեալ իցէ յառաջ:

 3:69 In such fashion he spent all his time in divine worship, never recalling that he had previously been a king:

3:70 Եւ այս ամենայն յերկար խռովութիւնք, որ եղեն մինչեւ ի հինգերորդ ամն Պերոզի արքայից արքայի, պատճառք եղեն չարձակելոյ նախարարացն Հայոց. այլ ռոճկաւ եւ ի տաճար մտանել յարքունիս մեծապէս առատացոյց քան զամաց սովորութիւնն:

 3:70 All these prolonged troubles, which lasted until the fifth year of Peroz, king of kings, were the reason for the Armenian nobles not being released. But he greatly increased their allowances and their attendance at court above the custom of previous years:

3:71 Եւ ի նմին հինգերորդ ամին զբազմաց նոցա զկեանսն անդրէն շնորհեաց, եւ այլոցն առ յոյսն խոստացաւ՝ յամն վեցերորդ միանգամայն արձակել զամենեսեան կենաւք եւ պատուով:

 3:71 In that same fifth year he restored to many of them their properties and held out the hope to others that in the sixth year they would all be finally released in possession of their property and rank:

3:72 Բայց ի տեղի այսր ինձ դարձեալ գալ պիտի:

 3:72 But I must return to that another time:

3:73 Իսկ կանայք երանելի առաքինեացն եւ կապելոցն եւ անկելոցն ի պատերազմին՝ ընդ ամենայն աշխարհն Հայոց համաւրէն համարել ես ոչ կարեմ. զի բազում այն են՝ զոր ոչ գիտեմ, քան թէ գիտիցեմ:

 3:73 As for the wives of the blessed heroes and prisoners and of those who fell in the war, I could not fully number them throughout the land of Armenia, for there are many more whom I do not know than those whom I do:

3:74 Զի հինգ հարիւրով չափ յականէ յանուանէ ճանաչեմ. ոչ միայն որ աւագագոյնքն էին, այլ զբազումս ի կրսերագունաց անտի:

 3:74 I am personally acquainted with five hundred, not only older women but many of the younger generation:

3:75 Ամենեքեան միահամուռ զերկրաւոր նախանձ բերելով՝ ոչ ինչ ընդհատ երեւեցան յայնցանէ, որ ոչ ճաշակեցին զաշխարհ:

 3:75 All of them without exception exhibited a heavenly zeal, appearing no different from those who have not experienced the world:
