11:0 Ապա ժողովեալ ամենայն աւագ քահանայք աշխարհին Հայոց հանդերձ երանելեաւն Մաշտոցիւ եւ ամենայն նախարարաւք աշխարհիս Հայոց եւ մեծամեծ տանուտերաւք առ թագաւորն Հայոց Վռամշապուհ, եւ հանդերձ թագաւորաւն սկսան աղաչել զսուրբ կաթողիկոսն Սահակ, արկանել զանձն յաշխատութիւն հոգեւոր եւ թարգմանել զաստուածաշունչ կտակարանս ի յոյն լեզուոյ ի հայ բարբառս:

 11:0 Then all the senior priests of the land of Armenia, with the venerable Mashtoc’, all the naxarars of Armenia and the grandee tanuters assembled by the king of Armenia, Vrhamshapuh and, together with the king, they began to beseech the blessed kat’oghikos Sahak to apply himself to this spiritual work and to translate the Biblical testaments from Greek into Armenian:

11:1 Եւ դասք աւագ քահանայիցն ասէին ցսուրբ քահանայապետն, թէ «Մեք որ կամքս առաջի քո, հանդերձ երանելեաւն Մաշտոցիւ, զոր զարթոյց աստուածայինն շնորհ ի ցանկութիւն այս՝ կարգել զվաղընջուցն գրեալ շարագիրս տառիցն, զորս ոչ ուրուք էր հոգացեալ արկանել ի կիր, այլ ասորի մեծաջան եւ անաւգուտ ուսմամբքն աշխատեալք յոխորտ. յորոց բազմութիւնք ժողովրդոց ունայնք եւ թափուրք հրաժարեալք գնային յեկեղեցւոյն:

 11:1 The orders of the senior priests said to the blessed patriarch:” We who stand before you, and the venerable Mashtoc’ (urge you to undertake the translation). Divine grace awoke (in Mashtoc’) the desire to put into order the list of letters long-since devised, which no one had bothered about putting into use. Rather (the literate class) labored with the difficult, useless and arrogant Syriac language. As a result, the multitude of the people (seeing matters as) futile and vain ceased going to church:

11:2 եւ ուսուցիչքն հանելով յոգւոց եւ հառաչելով` զղջանային զսնոտի ջանն իւրեանց, յորում ոչ զոք յուսումնասէր ժողովելոցն տեսանէին աւգտեալ ի վարդապետութենէ հոգեւոր խրատուցն, որ է կերակուր եւ պարարումն իմաստնախնդիր անձանց. մինչեւ գտաւ գիր եւ աջողելով Քրիստոսի եկեալ յաճումն տակաւին զաւրանայ:

 11:2 while the instructors, straining and sighing, regretted their empty exertions. Consequently, no learned individual perceived any benefit from the doctrine of spiritual counsel which is food and nourishment for those seeking knowledge. When (Mashtoc’) found the letters, Christ aided him and made him even stronger:

11:3 Համայն եւ զայս վաստակոյս կարգումն քոյին առաքինութեանդ գիտութեամբ եղիցի եւ կատարեա՛:

 11:3 Let the (final) arrangement of all this effort be accomplished with your virtuous knowledge:

11:4 Արդ` որպէս եւ սուրբ նահատակն Քրիստոսի Գրիգորիոս պահեալ ի խոշտանգանսն անվնաս աջով հզաւրին` ի լուսաւորութիւն գիտութեան աշխարհիս Հայոց տուաւ` պահեալ շնորհեցաւ եւ քեզ, նորին շառաւեղի, վիճակ ժառանգութեան պայծառութեան պաշտամանս այսորիկ, սկիզբն առնել գործոյ մշակութեանս այսմիկ եւ լինել նմանող սուրբ նախնւոյն քում, որ յանգիտութենէ ի ճշմարիտ աստուածգիտութիւն առաջնորդեաց աշխարհիս Հայոց:

 11:4 Now, just as the blessed champion of Christ, Gregory, by the aid of mighty (God), was kept unharmed throughout the torments, and was given (by God) to accomplish the illumination of (Christian) knowledge in the land of Armenia, so for you too, his descendant, an inheritance-share of this glowing religion has been kept. Begin this cultural work and be like your blessed ancestor who guided the land of Armenia from ignorance to the truth of recognition of God:

11:5 Արդ` եւ դու յանաւգուտ մուրողաբանութենէն ի ստոյգ հոգէշահ եւ եկեղեցազարդ բանաւորութիւնս առաջնորդեա բազում ժողովրդոց աշխարհիս մեծի, լնուլ զպակասութիւնս զայս, մնացեալ ի սուրբ նախնեացն քոց. զոր պահեաց քեզ Աստուած, զոր ոչ ումեք այլում ի Հայաստան աշխարհիս մարդկան գոյ հնար ձեռն արկանել յայդպիսի գործ մեծ:

 11:5 Lead the many people of this big land from that useless borrowed language to correct, spiritually-uplifting rationality which will adorn the church. Fill this void which has existed from (the time of) your blessed ancestors. God kept you for this and it is a great task which no other person in the land of Armenia is capable of doing:

11:6 Վասն զի եւ ոչ կարացաք հմուտ լինել եւ տեղեկանալ այդչափ արուեստաւոր ուսմանցդ, որպէս եւ քեզ տուաւ զաւրութիւն ճարտարութեան ի վերին աւգնականութենէն յաղագս քո առաքինասէր եւ պարկեշտ հոգւոյդ, որ նմանեալ ճշգրտապէս աւրինակեցեր ի քեզ զվարս երանելւոյ հաւր քո Ներսէսի:

 11:6 For we were unable to become as informed of and learned in the study (of Greek), as you who were given brilliance from On High because of your virtuous and modest spirit. In this regard, truly, you take after your venerable father, Nerses:

11:7 Եւ լուեալ զայս ամենայն բարեպաշտ կաթողիկոսն Հայոց սուրբն Սահակ ի թագաւորէն Հայոց Վռամշապհոյ եւ յերանելւոյն Մաշտոցէ եւ յամենայն ուխտէ քահանայիցն, եւս առաւել յաւագ տանուտերացն եւ յամենայն նախարարացն Հայոց` զուարճացաւ յոգի իւր, փառաւորելով զՓրկիչն ամենեցուն զտէր Յիսուս Քրիստոս:

 11:7 When Sahak, the pious kat’oghikos of Armenia, heard all of this from Vrhamshapuh, king of Armenia, from the venerable Mashtoc’, from the entire covenant of the priesthood, and especially from the senior tanuters and all the naxarars of Armenia, his soul rejoiced and he glorified the Savior of all, lord Jesus Christ:

11:8 Եւ կամաւոր յաւժարութեամբ ետ զանձն ի գործ, պանծացեալ յԱստուծոյ գործակցութիւնն, որ ետ նմա զայնպիսի շնորհս առաւելապէս գիտութեան. եւ անվեհեր ջանալով զցայգ եւ զցերեկ` թարգմանեաց զկտակարանս ամենայն, զխաւսեցեալս ճշմարիտ մարգարէիւք սուրբ Հոգւոյն, եւ հաստատեալ կնքեաց երջանիկ առաքելովքն զնորոց կտակարանացն զլուսաւոր եւ զկենսատուր քարոզութիւնս նովին Հոգւով:

 11:8 With willing enthusiasm he gave himself up to the work, proud of the assistance of God Who had graced him with such superb knowledge. Tirelessly working day and night, (Sahak) translated all the testaments, spoken by the true prophets of the Holy Spirit, confirmed and sealed by the luminous, envivifying sermons of the new testaments (pronounced) by the blessed Apostles, (filled) with the same Spirit:

11:9 Եւ տարեալ ի գլուխ սրբոյ հայրապետին Հայոց Սահակայ զգործ մեծ հոգեւոր վաստակոյն` կարգեցան վաղվաղակի յայնմհետէ դպրոցք հաւտին ուսմանց. բազմացան դասք գրչաց, ելեւելս առնելով զմիմեամբք. զարդարեցան պաշտամունք սուրբ եկեղեցւոյ. յորդորեցան բազմութիւնք արանց եւ կանանց ժողովրդոց ի տաւնս Փրկչին եւ ի ժողովս մարտիրոսաց:

 11:9 Now when the blessed patriarch of Armenia, Sahak, had completed this work of great spiritual effort, immediately afterwards schools were established for teaching the flock. The ranks of writers swelled, and, vying with each other, they embellished the worship of the holy Church. They encouraged multitudes of men and women to attend the Savior’s feast days and to visit the shrines of the martyrs:

11:10 Որ շահեալք լի հոգեւոր աւգտիւ` ընթանային խնդալիցք ի հաղորդմանէ մեծի խորհրդոյն, արձակեալք յիւրաքանչիւր ի տունս, մեծամեծք եւ տղայք, սաղմոսելով եւ կցորդս ասելով ընդ ամենայն տեղիս, ի հրապարակս եւ ի փողոցս եւ առտնին:

 11:10 These people, full of spiritual gain, after communing in the great mystery, went in joy, each to his home, grandees and children saying psalms and anthems (kc’ords) everywhere, in the squares, in the streets, and at home:

11:11 Պայծառացան եկեղեցիք. շուք առին վկայարանք սրբոց, միշտ ծաղկելով ի նոսա ուխտ կտակարանաց ընծայիւք. հանապազաբուղխ հոսէին վտակք յասողացն մեկնութեանց, որք զծածուկս մարգարէից բերելով ի յայտնութիւն` սեղանս ամենալիցս հոգեւոր խորտկաւք դնէին առաջի ամենայն ժողովրդեանն. յորոց ճաշակեալ իմաստախնդիրն մարդոց` քաղցրանայ ի քիմս նոցա, ըստ բանի սաղմոսերգին, բանք վարդապետութեան քան զխորիսխ մեղու:

 11:11 The churches grew radiant and the martyria of the saints became majestic with offerings of the testaments which were always blossoming within them. Ceaseless streams of exegesis flowed from the speakers who, in explaining the secrets of the prophets, placed the most lavish tables of spiritual delicacies before the entire people. Those seekers of wisdom who supped of this found (the meal) to their liking and, as the psalm states, the words of doctrine were sweeter than a honeycomb:

11:12 Եւ զի միանգամայն իսկ ասացից ըստ բանի սուրբ մարգարէին Եսայեայ, թէ Լցաւ երկիրս ամենայն Հայոց գիտութեամբ Տեառն ի հոգեւոր վտակաց սուրբ հայրապետին Սահակայ, իբրեւ զջուրս բազումս որ ծածկեն զծովս:

 11:12 Let me say, in the words of the blessed prophet Isaiah, that the entire country of Armenia filled with the knowledge of the Lord as waters cover the ocean, thanks to the spiritual rivers of the blessed patriarch Sahak:

11:13 Եւ շնորհիւ ամենախնամ Փրկչին Քրիստոսի կատարեալ այս ամենայն ի ժամանակս Վռամշապհոյ, ըստ յառաջագոյն գրելոց, եւ լուսաւորեալ աշխարհս Հայոց` եկաց յետ այսորիկ թագաւորն Վռամշապուհ ամս բազումս, եւ հասեալ ի յերկար ծերութիւն` վախճանեցաւ յանկողնի իւրում խաղաղական հանգստիւ յաշխարհիս Հայոց:

 11:13 And thanks to the all-caring Savior Christ, all of this was accomplished during the time of Vrhamshapuh, as was written earlier. After this, king Vrhamshapuh lived for many years. Having reached old age, he died peacefully in his bed in the land of Armenia:
