88:0 Խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ այնուհետեւ Հազարաւուխտոյ միաբանութեամբ աւագանւոյն յերկրորդումն աւուր թագաւորութեանն Վաղարշու` խաւսէր առաջի թագաւորին Վաղարշու եւ ասէր:

 88:0 On the second day of Vagharsh’s reign, Hazarawuxt and the nobility held counsel. In king Vagharsh’s presence (Hazarawuxt) note:

88:1 Պերոզ արքայից արքայ ձեր եղբայր, որպէս եւ դուք իսկ գիտէք, զի բուռն եւ անձնակամ եւ անհաւան, եւ բազումք յարհամարհոտ նորա կամակորութենէն փախուցեալք են յԱրեաց թագաւորութենէ, որք շատ եւ ոչ սակաւ մասամբ վնասեցին Արեաց աշխարհին:

 88:1 As you yourself know, your violent, self-indulgent and obstinate brother, king of kings Peroz’ contemptuous depravity caused many people to flee from the Aryan realm. In a major, not minor way they have damaged the land of the Aryans:

88:2 Եւ նախ առաջին, որպէս մեծ աշխարհս Հայոց, որ եւ այսաւր ի ձեր ծառայութենէ ի բաց կացեալ են. եւ այրն որ զաշխարհն ի բաց ունի ի ձէնջ` ի չճանաչելոյ զայր եւ զպիտանութիւն նորա, Պերոզ կորուսեալ եհան յԱրեաց ծառայութենէ զայր լաւ եւ զայնպիսի աշխարհ. եւ թէ ո՛րքան ինչ յայնմ առնէ վնասք եւ հարումն Արեաց աշխարհիս եղեւ` գիտեն ամենեքեան. բայց թուի թէ եւ ձեր լուեալ է զամենայն եւ տեղեակ էք:

 88:2 A primary example is the great land of the Armenians who today stand outside your service. The man who holds such a land aloof from you is a good man whose worth and essence went unrecognized by Peroz who drove him away from serving the Aryans. Everyone knows the injuries and blows occasioned by this man against the Aryan world. I think that you have heard and are informed about all of this:

88:3 Բայց աւելի Շապուհ-Միհրան, զոր դուք կարգեցէք` առ զնորա քաջութեան փորձ եւ զխրատու. եւ թէ հարցանէք եւ լսել կամիք` դոյն ինքն ասէ ձեզ:

 88:3 But Shapuh-Mihran whom you appointed (marzpan) knows about (Vahan’s) bravery and wisdom even better through experience. If you wish to interrogate him and listen, he himself will tell you:

88:4 Եւ թագաւորին Վաղարշու հարցեալ զՄիհրան-Շապուհ զգործոյն Հայոց, թէ «Զի՞նչ կարացեր գործել գործ յաշխարհին Հայոց, եւ Վահանայ զի՞նչ միտք են եւ ոյժ, եւ ո՞րպէս կարաց այսքան ամս զդէմ ունել Արեացս:

 88:4 Then king Vagharsh asked Shapuh-Mihran about Armenian affairs: “What were you able to accomplish in the land of Armenia, what are Vahan’s thoughts and strength, and how has he been able to resist the Aryans for so many years:

88:5 Աստուծոյ զաւրութեամբն:

 88:5 By the power of God:

88:6 Եւ Միհրանայ պատասխանի տուեալ ասաց, թէ «Արանց քաջ, զկռիւն զոր Հազարաւուխտ մեաւք հանդերձ ընդ Վահանայ արար, եւ թէ Վահանայ իւր զաւրքն բովանդակ անդ եղեալ էին` թուի թէ տանէր զյաղթութիւնն. այլ թէպէտ եւ յաղթէաք մե՛ք` զայս գիտեմ, զի անթիւ բազմութեան ի մէնջ կոտորած առնէին:

 88:6 Mihran replied: “Brave of the Aryans, it seems that Vahan was triumphant in the battle which Hazarawuxt and we fought, even though Vahan was there with all of his forces. Despite the fact that we were the victors, I know that they killed a countless multitude of our men:

88:7 Այլ ձեր թագ այնպէս արարին, զի գնդին Հայոց կէս, այրընտիր որեարն այլուր դիպեցան ի գործ:

 88:7 They dealt with your rule in such a way that half of the Armenian brigade engaged select warriors elsewhere:

88:8 Սակայն սակաւ արամբք ո՛րպիսի ինչ վնաս արար` գիտէ ինքն Հազարաւուխտ եւ այլ պարսիկ որեար որ անդ էին աւագք:

 88:8 Hazarawuxt himself and other Iranian folk who were the seniors there know, nonetheless, what great damage (Vahan) inflicted with only a few men:

88:9 Իսկ յորժամ Հազարաւուխտ ի Վիրս գնաց եւ զիս անդէն զաւրագլուխ եթող գնդին, եւ յայնմ հետէ զի՛նչ Վահան զմեզ աշխատ կալաւ կարի սակաւ արամբք, - զոր երբեմն թէ հարիւրաւք ասեմ` չստեմ, եւ վկայեն ինձ գնդիս մերոյ աւագորեար որ անդ էին եւ այժմ աստ են, - կարի ծանր է ասել եւ անհաւատալի բանք, թէ այնքան սակաւուք դէմ յանդիման կռուել աներկիւղութեամբ, եւ զաւր ամենայն ի ղակշի վերայ գալ եւ մեծամեծ վնաս առնել:

 88:9 After Hazarawuxt went to Iberia and left me there (in Armenia) as military commander, the way Vahan fatigued us with very few men (sometimes only hundreds, I am not exaggerating; and the noble folk of our brigade who were there and now are here testify) it is very difficult to say, and the words are unbelievable. For how could he fearlessly resist in battle with so few men, and come against the encampment all day, inflicting very great harm:

88:10 Բայց զմիոյ աւուր գործն ես իսկ յիշեմ որ անդ էի. սակայն նոր համարիմ եւ ի վեր քան զմարդկան իրս, թո՛ղ թէ որ լսէ` զիա՞րդ կարէ հաւատալ:

 88:10 But I who was there recall the events of one day in particular, and again consider the affair beyond human capabilities, though who upon hearing can believe it:

88:11 Քանզի թուով երեսուն արամբք ի վերայ երից հազարաց առն յաներկիւղս յարձակեալ, եւ զայնպիսի գործ վճարեալ, զոր ամենայն որ անդէն էին տեսողքն այսաւր յիշեն. թուի թէ երկիւղ գործոյն չելանէ ի մտաց:

 88:11 For (Vahan) with thirty men fearlessly attacked [3,000] (of us) and wrought such a deed that all who observed it recall it today and probably fear of it will not depart:

88:12 Զի եւ ոչ ինչ այլ իմիք նման չէին այն նորոգ իրք, բայց եթէ յորժամ ժիր մշակք քաջ սուր մանգաղաւ եւ գերանդեաւ զխոտ հարկանիցեն, եւ բազում որայս մաւտ ի մաւտ առ ի միմեանս կուտեալ թողուցուն, եւ ինքեանք ուրախալից ցնծութեամբ անհոգ յիւրաքանչիւր տունս գնայցեն. ստոյգ ըստ այնմ աւրինակի յարձակեալք ի վերայ Միհրանայ այնքան արամբք` հերձին վեր ի վայր զբովանդակ գունդն, եւ շատ լաւ որեար կոտորեցին:

 88:12 Such new deeds resemble nothing so much as diligent mshaks with good sharp sickles and scythes chopping grass, putting it in many heaps close to each other, and then joyously returning to their homes without a care. In just this way did they attack Mihran with so many men and completely split the entire brigade, killing many good folk:

88:13 Եւ զահաւոր այրն զԳդիհոն զՍիւնեաց տէրն սպանին. զոր յիմ միտս այսպէս ասէի, թէ լոկ Գդիհոն միայն ինքն տասն արամբ յիւր գնդէն պատահէր այնչափ առն` այն միայն առնէր. եւ զայնպիսի այր եւ զայլ ականաւոր եւ քաջ արս ի պարսիկ մարդկանէ հանին ընդ սուր. եւ ինքեանք ոչ ինչ խոյս տուեալ ի բաց վարեցին զձիանս իւրեանց, այլ մաւտ ի մեզ թեւակից երթային յանհոգս ի բազում ժամս:

 88:13 including that awesome man, Gdihon, lord of Siwnik’. I had thought that only Gdihon with ten men of his brigade could encounter so many men and alone (be able to) do that. And (the Vahaneans) put to the sword such a man, and other distinguished and brave Iranian men. Nor did they then ride off on their horses and elude us. Rather, unconcernedly, they followed alongside for many hours:

88:14 Եւ ի մեր գնդէն ոչ ուրուք իշխեցեալ հայել ի նոսա. վասն զի աստուածք, եւ ո՛չ մարդիկ կարծեցեալ ամենեցուն թուէին մեզ:

 88:14 No one in our brigade dared to look at them. For it seemed to all of us that they were gods, not men:

88:15 Վասն որոյ թէպէտ եւ առաջի ձեր յանդգնութիւն թուին բանքս իմ` սակայն յաղագս կարծեաց ժամուս համարձակիմ ասել, զի զաշխարհին Հայոց զմեծութիւն եւ զաւգուտն զայն դուք իսկ քաջ գիտէք. բայց այրն Վահան եւ այլ որեարն որ ընդ նմա են, եւ այսաւր խաղաղութեամբ ի ձեր ծառայութեան էին` մեծ մասն բարւոյ եւ մխիթարութեան կարեւոր հասելոյ տրտմութեանս մերոյ համարէի զիրսն զայն:

 88:15 Although my words may seem audacious before you, I dare to express these views because of the appropriateness of the time. For you yourself well know the greatness and benefit of the land of the Armenians. I feel that if Vahan and the other folk with him were today peacefully in your service, a great deal of good and important consolation would ease our sorrow:

88:16 Զի յորժամ Հայք այնպիսի որերով մեր էին` Վիրք եւ Աղուանք չիշխէին բնաւ թիւրել զանձինս եւ այլազգագոյնս ինչ խորհել:

 88:16 For when the Armenians with such folk, are ours, the Iberians and Aghbanians (Aghuans) would never dare to deviate or think anything contrary:

88:17 Եւ լուեալ զայսպիսի կարգեալ բանս թագաւորին Վաղարշու ի Միհրանայ եւ Հազարաւուխտոյ, եւ այլ ամենայն Արեաց աւագանւոյն` միաբան ամենեքեան զասացեալսն ի Միհրանայ գովէին, թէ արդարեւ որպէս են իսկ` նոյնպէս ասացեր լաւաբար իմաստութեամբ զարդարն:

 88:17 When king Vagharsh heard such statements in order from Mihran, Hazarawuxt, and all the other Iranian nobility, they all praised what Mihran had said as true indeed:

88:18 Եւ վաղվաղակի եւ փութով զՆիխոր զՎշնասպդատ, զայր հեզ եւ զմտացի եւ աշխարհաշէն, բազում այրընտիր արամբք ի Հայս արձակէին:

 88:18 They immediately dispatched to Armenia Nixor Vshnaspdat, a mild, intelligent and constructive person, with many select men:

88:19 Պատուիրէր նմա ինքն իսկ թագաւորն, այլ եւս առաւել հոգաբարձութեամբ Հազարաւուխտ եւ այլ դրանն աւագանին, թէ «Ե՛րթ ի Հայս, եւ որ ինչ աւրինակաւ եւ է` ամենայն քաղցրութեամբ եւ սիրով ըստ կամացն Վահանայ եւ նորուն ընկերակցացն` նուաճեալ զորեարն եւ յԱրեաց ի ծառայութիւն ա՛ծ:

 88:19 He was instructed by the king himself and even more so through the superintendence of Hazarawuxt and the other court nobility: “Go to Armenia and do whatever is necessary with all mildness and affection, according to the wishes of Vahan and his comrades, to bring these folk into Aryan service:

88:20 Բայց զգոյշ լեր նախ ժողովել առ քեզ զայրուձին Ատրպատականի որ մաւտ ի Հայս իցեն, եւ զայրուձին Հեր եւ Զարաւանդ գաւառի. մի՛ գուցէ յղեալ քո առ Վահան, եւ նա պատճառանաւք քաղցր խաւսելով ընդ քեզ` խաբիցէ զքեզ եւ վնաս ինչ առնիցէ:

 88:20 But be careful to first assemble with you the cavalrymen of Atrpatakan who are near Armenia and the cavalry of Her and Zarawant district. For perhaps when you send to Vahan he will give you friendly pretexts but then trick and somehow harm you:

88:21 Վասն զի այրն ինքն քաջ է եւ բազմամիտ է. քանզի եւ ցայժմ ոչ այնքան զայնպիսի գործեան վճարեաց նա եւ որք ընդ նմա էին` լոկ քաջութեամբ. այլ դու քաջ պատրաստեսջիր:

 88:21 The man is brave and shrewd. For to the present he and those with him have not accomplished such feats merely through bravery. Be well prepared:

88:22 Բայց թուի թէ արդ Վահան չխորհի զայդպիսի ինչ. զի զայդ գործ, զոր համարձակեցաւ Վահան գործել եւ որք ընդ նմայն էին` յանճանաչողութենէ Պերոզի զմարդկութիւնն, ըստ հպարտ եւ անձնակամ բարուցն իւրոց, եւ չկարացեալ Վահանայ եւ մարդկանն որ միաբանեցան ընդ նմա, տանել արհամարհանաց, դնելով զանձինս ի մահ` դիմեցին առնել զայսպիսի իրս առ հարկի:

 88:22 But it seems that Vahan would not think of such a thing, since the work which he and those with him made bold to do resulted from Peroz’ lack of knowledge of human nature (in accordance with his proud and willful personality) and the inability of Vahan and those men who allied with him, to bear the ridicule. Willing to face death, they were forced to do such things:

88:23 Եւ խաւսեալ զայս ամենայն բանս տեառն Արեաց Վաղարշու եւ ամենայն աւագանւոյն ընդ Վշնասպդատայ Նիխորոյ, եւ հրաժարեալ զնա արձակեցին ի Հայս:

 88:23 When the lord of the Aryans, Vagharsh, and all the nobility had said these things to Nixor Vshnaspdat, they bid him farewell and dispatched him to Armenia:
