30:0 The flight of Atat Khorkhoṙuni from service to the Greeks; his taking refuge with Khosrov and being honoured by him. Then his rebellion from Khosrov and his death. The Persian and Greek governors in Armenia in the years of peace between the two kings:

30:1 Իսկ արդ՝ զինչ եւս զԱտատ Խորխոռունւոյ ասացից եւ զմիւսանգամ զապստամբութիւնն: Էր սա պատրիկ մեծ, վասն որոյ հրաման տայ թագաւորն կոչել զնա ի պաղատն, եւ գնացեալ ի նա եւթանասուն արամբք. եւ մեծարեալ շքեղացոյց զնա եւ որ ընդ նմայն ըստ արժանի վայելչական ընդունելութեանն: Ետ նմա անաւթս ոսկիս եւ արծաթիս եւ գանձս բազում յոյժ:

30:1 Now what more shall I say about Atat Khorkhoṙuni and his further rebellion? He was a great patrik, for which reason the king ordered him to be summoned to the palace; so, he went to him with seventy men. He splendidly honoured him and those accompanying him with a worthy and appropriate reception. He gave him gold and silver vessels and very many treasures:

30:2 Եւ հրաման ետ երթալ ի Թիրակ առ զաւրս իւր. եւ հրաժարեալ ի թագաւորէն եւ գնաց: Եւ մինչդեռ գնայր ի ճանապարհի՝ արկ նա ի միտս իւր ապստամբել եւ գնալ առ թագաւորն Պարսից: Եւ ստերիւրեալ ի ճանապարհէն՝ գնաց ի ծովեզերն եւ հանդիպեալ նաւի միոջ՝ ասէ նաւորդացն. «Անցուցէք զիս յայնկոյս, զի ի գործ կարեւոր առաքեալ եմ ես ի թագաւորէն»: Եւ հրապուրեալ զնաւորդսն՝ անցուցին զնա, եւ գնաց փութանակի, ճեպեալ հասանէր ի Հայաստան երկիր:

30:2 He ordered him to go to Thrace to (join) his troops. He took his leave from the king and departed. But while he was still on his way he decided to rebel and go to the Persian king. Turning aside from the road, he made his way to the coast, and encountering a ship, he said to the sailors: ’Take me across to the other side, because I have been sent on an important task by the king. ’ He duped the sailors, who took him across. He immediately set out and travelled rapidly to Armenia:

30:3 Եւ ոչ ոք վաղագոյն իմացաւ զճանապարհ գնալոյ նորա, մինչեւ բազում աւթեւանաւք մեկնեալ հեռացաւ ի ծովեզերէն: Ապա ուստեմն իրազեկ լինէին գնալոյն. եւ ելեալ ընդդէմ սորա քաղաքաց քաղաքաց զաւրք՝ եւ ոչ կարէին զդէմ նորա ունել, եւ ընդ ութ եւ տասն տեղի արարեալ նորա պատերազմն ի ճանապարհի՝ յաղթող ամենայնի գտանէր, թէպէտ եւ իւր զաւրականն պակասեալ նուազէր, եւ այնպէս գնացեալ փութանակի հասանէր ի Նախճաւան:

30:3 No one knew the route he had taken until he was many days’ journey from the coast. Then from some source they learned of his departure, and troops of various cities went out to encounter him. But they were unable to oppose him. In eight or ten places he fought a battle on the way and was victorious in them all, although his force gradually diminished. In this way he quickly reached Nakhchawan:

30:4 Եւ ընկալեալ զնա Պարսիցն ի բերդն ամրանայր: Յայնժամ ժողովէր զամենայն զաւրս իւր ստրատելատն, եւ երթեալ պաշարէր զբերդն շուրջանակի զամէնն:

30:4 The Persians received him, and he secured himself in the fortress. Then the stratelat gathered all his troops, came up, and completely surrounded the fortress:

30:5 Ազդ լինի արքային Խոսրովու եղեալ իրքն, եւ արձակէ ի վերայ նոցա զՊարսայենպետ հանդերձ զաւրու: Իբրեւ եկն մերձեցաւ զաւրն՝ թողին նոքա զքաղաքն եւ գնացին. եւ նորա փութացեալ գնաց առ թագաւորն Պարսից: Իսկ նա սիրով ընկալաւ զնա, մեծացոյց պատուովք, եւ ետ նմա զգանձս, եւ հրամայեաց ռոճիկ յարքունուստ:

30:5 King Khosrov was informed of these events, and he sent against them the Parsayenpet with an army. When the army had approached, they (the Greeks) left the city and departed. He rapidly went to the Persian king, who received him in a friendly way, greatly honoured him, gave him treasures, and authorized a stipend from the treasury:

30:6 Եւ եղեւ զկնի ամի միոյ մեռանել Մաւրկայ, եւ թագաւորել Փոկասայ: Արկ սա ի միտս իւր ապստամբել եւ գնալ առ թագաւորն Յունաց: Սկսաւ պատրաստել երիվարս տաճիկս եւ կազմել սպառազինութիւն, յանկուցանէ յինքն արս սրիկայս: Լուր եհաս ի լսելիս արքային բանն, հրաման ետ կապել զնա ոտիւք եւ ձեռաւք, եւ բրաւք սպանանել:

30:6 One year later Maurice died and Phocas became king. He (Atat) decided to rebel and go to the Greek king. He began to organize Arabian horses and to prepare arms, and brought over brigands. News of this reached the king’s ears, and he ordered him to be bound feet and hands, and to be killed by cudgels:

30:7 Եւ այս են սահմանակալք տէրութեանն Պարսից յամս հաշտութեան այնորիկ ի Հայաստան երկրի եւ Դուին քաղաք։ Վնդատական, Նիխորական. զսա սպանին զաւրքն Պարսից ի Դուին, եւ ինքեանք ապստամբեալ գնացին ի Գեղումս: Ապա Մերկուտ. ապա Յազդէն. ապա Բուտմահ. ապա Յեմանն: Իսկ ի Յունաց կողմանէ՝ նախ Յովհան Պատրիկ. ապա Հերակղ. ապա Սորմէն զաւրավար. մինչեւ լցան ամք երեքտասանք հաշտութեանն:

30:7 These are the governors for the Persian kingdom during the years of that treaty in Armenia and in the city of Dvin: Vndatakan Nikhorakan - the Persian troops killed him in Dvin and went in rebellion to Gełumk’. Then Merkut; then Yazdēn; then Butmah; then Yeman. But on the Greek side: first Yovhan patrik; then Herakl; the general Sormēn, until thirteen years of the treaty were up:

30:8 Եւ հրաման ելանէ ի կայսերէ. «Երեսուն հազար հեծեալ վզենակալ է, ասէ, իմ ի վերայ աշխարհին Հայոց: Արդ՝ [ԼՌ] երդաւոր ժողովեսցին ինձ անտի եւ նստուսցին ի Թիրակացւոց աշխարհին»: Եւ արձակոյր զՊրիսկոս ի Հայս վասն գործոյն այնորիկ: Մինչդեռ եկեալ հասանէր համբաւն խռովութեան մեծի, եւ Պրիսկոս յարուցեալ գնայր անհնարին տագնապաւ:

30:8 An order came from the emperor: ’Thirty thousand cavalry, ’ it said, ’are my levy on the country of Armenia. So, let [30,000] households be gathered thence for me and settled in the land of Thrace. ’ He sent Priscus to Armenia for that task. Meanwhile news of a great disturbance arrived, and Priscus set out with the greatest urgency:
