11:1 Եւ մինչդեռ խորհէր Տրդատիոս խաւսել եւ այլ ողոքով ընդ նմա, եւ յղել պատգամ եւ խոստանալ կեանս եւ պատիւս, որում ոչ ինչ էր լսելոց. - «Եթէ այնմ եւս ոչ լսիցէ՝ ասէ, եւ այլ եւս յաւելից, եւ ի տոկ կտտեցից:

 11:1 While Tiridates was planning to speak with him in a gentler fashion and to reply and promise him life and honors, to which he would not have agreed - “If he does not agree to this, he said, then will I increase the tortures still more and break his endurance:

11:2 յառաջ մատուցեալ ոմն ի նախարարացն, որում անուն էր Տաճատ, փեսայ Արտաւանայ սպարապետի արքայի՝ սկսաւ խաւսել եւ տալ տեղեկութիւն եւ ասել այսպէս վասն նորա, թէ «Վասն զի չէ պարտ կենաց՝ վասն այնորիկ ոչ կամի կեալ եւ զլոյս տեսանել:

 11:2 there came forward one of the princes, whose name was Tachat, son-in-law of Artavan the High Constable, and he began to speak and give information about him as follows: “Because he is unworthy of life, therefore he does not wish to live and see the light:

11:3 Զի այսքան ժամանակք են, որ առ մեզ բնակեալ է, եւ ոչ գիտէաք զսա. այլ դա է որդի Անակայ մահապարտի, որ սպան զհայր քո Խոսրով, եւ արար խաւար Հայոց աշխարհիս եւ ի կորուստ մատնեաց զայս աշխարհ եւ ի գերութիւն. արդ՝ չէ պարտ կեալ դմա, զի որդի վրիժապարտի է դա:

 11:3 For it is all this time since he has been living among us and we did not recognize him. But he is the son of the guilty Anak, who killed your father Khosrov and plundered this land of Armenia and brought this country to destruction and captivity. So, it is not right for him to live, because he is the son of a guilty man:

11:4 Եւ յետ այսչափ հարցից եւ տանջանաց, գանից եւ բանտից, գելարանաց եւ կախաղանաց, դառն նեղութեանց եւ ամենայն կտտանաց, որով կտտեցին զնա, բազում համբերութեամբ յանձն իւր տարեալ վասն անուան Տեառն մերոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի:

 11:4 After so many interrogations and torments, beatings and imprisonments, bindings and hangings, bitter afflictions and every torture that they had inflicted on him, which he accepted with great patience for the sake of the name of our Lord Jesus Christ:

11:5 այդ՝ իբրեւ այնմ եւս հասանէր թագաւորն ի վերայ իրացն, եթէ արդարեւ որդի Անակայ Պարթեւի է, որ սպան զԽոսրով հայր նորա՝ հրաման տայր կապեալ ոտիւք եւ կապեալ ձեռաւք եւ կապեալ պարանոցաւ խաղացուցանել զնա յԱյրարատ գաւառ:

 11:5 then when the king discovered this further about him that he was in truth the son of Anak the Parthian who had killed his father Khosrov, he ordered him to be bound hand and foot and neck and to be taken and shut up in a dungeon in the province of Ayrarat:

11:6 եւ տալ զնա ի դղեակ բերդին Արտաշատ քաղաքի, եւ իջուցանել ի վիրապն ներքին, որ անհնարին էր խորութեամբ, մինչեւ անդէն մեռցի:

 11:6 that he should be taken to the acropolis of the city of Artashat and let down into the bottommost pit that was incredibly deep until he died there:

11:7 Եւ եղեւ նա յայնմ վիրապի ամս երեքտասան:

 11:7 And he was in that pit thirteen years:

11:8 Եւ ինքն իսկ թագաւորն խաղայր գնայր ի ձմերոց յԱյրարատ գաւառ, ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաք, ի Հայոց աշխարհ յարեւելս:

 11:8 But the king himself went to the province of Ayrarat to his winter-quarters in the city of Vagharshapat, in the East of Armenia:

11:9 Իսկ թագաւորն Տրդատ զամենայն ժամանակս իւրոյ թագաւորութեանն աւերէր քանդէր զերկիրն Պարսից թագաւորութեանն եւ զաշխարհն Ասորեստանի, աւերէր եւ հարկանէր ի հարուածս անհնարինս:

 11:9 Now King Trdat, for the entire tenure of his reign, was destroying and ruining the country of the Persian kingdom and the land of Asorestan - wrecking it and subjecting it to incredible blows:

11:10 Վասն այսորիկ պատշաճեցան բանքս այս ի բանս կարգի առակաց, թէ «Իբրեւ զսէգն Տրդատ, որ սիգալովն աւերեաց զթումբս գետոց, եւ ցամաքեցոյց իսկ ի սիգալն իւրում զյորձանս ծովուց:

 11:10 It is for this reason that such deeds merited expression among the ranks of those reciting proverbs, that “Like the arrogant Trdat, who pridefully destroyed the dykes of rivers and arrogantly dried up the currents of seas:

11:11 Վասն զի սէգ իսկ էր առ հանդերձս եւ այլ ուժով պնդութեան, հարստութեամբ, բուռն ոսկերաւք եւ յաղթ մարմնով, քաջ եւ պատերազմող անհնարին, բարձր եւ լայն հասակաւ, որ զամենայն ժամանակս կենաց իւրոց պատերազմեալ եւ առնէր մարտիցն յաղթութիւն:

 11:11 His haughtiness even extended to his clothing. Trdat was possessed of great strength, solid bones, and a large frame. He was brave and an incredible warrior, tall and broad of stature. Throughout his entire life he made war and was triumphant:

11:12 Մեծ անուն պարծանաց քաջութեան անձին ստանայր, եւ զհոյակապ շքեղութիւն յաղթութեան ընդ ամենայն աշխարհ կացուցանէր. հարկանէր ի հարուածս զթշնամիսն, եւ խնդրէր զքէնս վրիժուց իւրոց հայրենեացն. առնոյր աւար բազում ի կողմանցն Ասորւոց, եւ թափէր կապուտ սաստիկ անհնարին ի նոցանէն:

 11:12 He received a great renown for bravery, and the grand splendor of his victories resounded throughout the entire world. He struck at enemies and sought vengeance for his ancestors. He took much booty from the Syrian areas and acquired an unbelievable amount of loot from them:

11:13 Արկանէր ի սուր զզաւրս Պարսից, եւ թափէր կողոպուտ անհնարին. լինէր առաջնորդ առն եւ ձիոյ զաւրացն Յունաց, եւ մատնէր նոցա զբանակս նոցա. հանէր զզաւրս Հոնաց սաստիկ յոյժ, եւ գերէր զկողմանս Պարսից:

 11:13 He put to the sword Persian troops and took an incredible quantity of plunder from them. He became the leader of the Greek cavalry forces and gave the captured camps of the Persians over to them. He removed or, brought forth extremely large numbers of the troops of the Huns, and seized Persian areas:

11:14 Եւ զայն ամս երեքտասան, որ եղեւ Գրիգորիոս ի բերդին բանդին եւ ի խոր վիրապին, կին ոմն այրի, որ էր ի բերդին յայնմիկ, հրաման առեալ յարհաւրաց՝ զի աւուրն նկանակ մի արարեալ պատրաստական ընկենուլ ի ներքս ի խոր վիրապն. եւ այնու կերակրեալ լինէր նա ի հրամանէն Աստուծոյ զայն ամս որ եղեւ նա անդ:

 11:14 Now there was a widow who lived in that fortress wherein Grigorios was imprisoned for thirteen years in the deep pit. The woman had received a command in a dream that every day she was to throw into that deep pit a loaf of bread which she was to prepare. In such a way was Gregory nourished by the command of God during the years that he was there:

11:15 Իսկ յայն վիրապ, ուր ընկեցին զնա՝ պահեալ լինէր նա կենդանի շնորհիւ Տեառն իւրոյ:

 11:15 In that pit which they had thrown him into Gregory was preserved alive by the grace of his Lord:

11:16 Իսկ այլ մարդիկ, որ միանգամ իջուցեալ էր անդր՝ ամենեքեան մեռեալ էին վասն դժնդակ չարաշունչ դառնութեան տեղւոյն, վասն կարակում տղմին, աւձախառն բնակութեան եւ խորութեանն:

 11:16 As for other men who had been let down there, all had died due to the horribly foul air in the place, the muddy slime, the snakes inhabiting it, and the depth:

11:17 Վասն չարագործաց իսկ էր շինեալ զայն տեղի եւ ի սպանումն մահապարտացն ամենայն Հայոց:

 11:17 Indeed, that place had been constructed specifically for criminals, for killing those condemned to death in all of Armenia:
