13:0 Յաղագս թէ զիա՛րդ յետ մահուն Յուսկան անառաջնորդ լինէր երկիրս Հայոց. եւ ոչ որդիքն Յուսկան լինէին արժանի հօրն աթոռոյն:	13:0 How the country of Armenia remained without a patriarch after the death of Yusik, and how Yusik’s sons were unworthy of their father’s patriarchal throne:
13:1 Եւ յետ այսր անցեալ ժամանակաց, զկնի թոպամահն լինելոյ երանելոյն Յուսկան, անառաջնորդք եղեալ` իբրեւ զկոյրս մոլորեցան երկիրն լեզուին թորգոմական աշխարհին:	13:1 Some time after the venerable Yusik was beaten to death, the country of the land of the Torgomean language was leaderless, and was like a blind person, groping:
13:2 Քանզի տուաւ նոցա ոգի մոլորութեան, աչս` զի մի՛ տեսցեն, եւ ականջս` զի մի՛ լուիցեն, եւ սիրտ` զի մի՛ իմասցին դառնալ յապաշխարութիւն:	13:2 They were given the soul of erring: eyes which do not see, ears which do not hear and hearts which do not understand and do not turn to atonement:
13:3 Եւ զխաւարային խորխորատ կորստեան գտեալ, հարեալ իւրեանց անձանց ճանապարհ, կործանեցան անկեալք. զի ոչ մի ոք գոյր` որ նոցա մոլեգնութեանն պատկառուկս արկանէր զմեղս գործելոյ, այլ անհովիւք էին:	13:3 Benighted, they reached the abyss of destruction, having cut their own road, they were ruined and fell, and there was no one to be shamed by their acts and sins of frenzy, since they remained without a leader:
13:4 Զկորստեան ճանապարհն` համարձակէին ի չարիս` կամօք գնացեալք, եւ կամօք լեալք որդիք բարկութեան. եւ առանց Աստուծոյ շրջէին յաշխարհի կամակոր ազգ տանն Հայոց երկրին:	13:4 They boldly travelled the road of ruin, and by their own will fell into sin, by their will they became the sons of anger, and without God they travelled about the land of the crooked azg of the tun of the country of Armenia:
13:5 Նմանեալք լինէին այնմ հօտի խաշանց, որ զպահպանութիւն շանցն` պահողաց պահապանացն, ի բաց մերժեցին, եւ կամօք իւրեանց կերակուր գէշ թշնամութեան գայլոցն մատնեցան, ըստ նմանութեան մեծին աթենացւոց քաղաքին:	13:5 They resembled that flock of sheep which made its own protecting and guarding dogs depart, and by its own will was betrayed to the enemy wolves, becoming their food, just like the great city of Athens:
13:6 Յայնմ ժամանակի զթագաւորն իւրեանց օրինակ չարի առնէին, եւ նովին օրինակաւ ձեւել սկսան, եւ նոյնպէս գործել:	13:6 In that tine people took their wicked example from the king and started to behave like him, and to do as he did:
13:7 Զի ի վաղնջուց, յորմէ հետէ առին նոքա զանուն քրիստոնէութեանն, լոկ միայն իբրեւ զկրօնիս իմն մարդկութեան յանձինս իւրեանց` եւ ոչ ջերմեռանդն ինչ հաւատովք ընկալան, այլ իբրեւ զմոլորութիւն իմն մարդկութեան ի հարկէ:	13:7 For long since, when they accepted Christianity, they took that faith by obligation, as though it were a human error, and not in fervent faith:
13:8 Ոչ եթէ որպէս պարտն էր` գիտութեամբ յուսով կամ հաւատով, բայց միայն սակաւ ինչ որք զհանգամանս գիտէին հելլէն կամ ասորի դպրութեանց, որք էին հասու ինչ այնմ փոքր ի շատէ:	13:8 They accepted the faith not knowledgably with hope and faith, as is necessary. Only a few who were to some extent familiar with Greek or Syriac education partially understood that faith:
13:9 Իսկ որք արտաքոյ քան զգիտութիւն արուեստին էին այլ խառնաղանճ բազմութիւն մարդկան ժողովրդոց նախարարացն եւ կամ շինականութեանն, եթէ զցայգ եւ զցերեկ նստեալ վարդապետացն եւ ըստ նմանութեան ամպոցն իբրեւ զյորդահեղեղ ինչ անձրեւաց սաստկութիւն զվարդապետութիւնն ի վերայ հոսէին, ոչ ոք ի նոցանէն եւ ոչ մի ոչ, եւ ոչ մի բան, եւ ոչ կէս բանի, եւ ոչ դոյզն յիշատակ ինչ, եւ ոչ նշմարանս ինչ զոր լսէինն, եւ ոչ կարէին ինչ ունել ի մտի:	13:9 But those who were devoid of literacy, namely the people - the motley multitude of naxarars and shinakans - even if teachers sat day and night and drenched them with learning like clouds pouring down heavy rain, none of them would have been able to understand or remember a single word, half a word, or any bit of what they had heard:
13:10 Վասն զի միտք իւրեանց ընդ անպիտանս ընդ անօգուտս եւեթ զբօսեալ էին. զոր օրինակ մանկունք տղայք ընդ մանգութեանն եւ ընդ տղայութեանն խաղալիկ խանկարեալք, եւ զպիտոյիցն եւ զկարեւորացն ոչ ինչ փոյթ արարեալ, սոյնպէս եւ դեգերեալ մաշէին յանուղղայ կրթութիւն ընդ չքոտի մտացն ի հնութիւն հեթանոսութեանց սովորութեանց, բարբարոս խուժադուժ միտս ունելով:	13:10 For their minds were occupied with useless, vain matters, like little boys prepossessed with their childish toys, and they took no notice of useful or important things. Similarly, the Armenians with their weak minds were attached to undirected learning, to the old pagan customs, since they possessed rough, barbaric intellects:
13:11 Եւ զիւրեանց երգս առասպելաց զվիպասանութեանն սիրեցեալք ի փոյթ կրթութեանցն, եւ նմին հաւատացեալք, եւ ի նոյն հանապազորդեալք, ի հեռ եւ ի նախանձ ընդ միմեանս չառակնութեամբ, թշնամութիւն ոխութեանց, զմիմեանս խածատել, եւ նենգել այր զընկեր եւ զեղբայր:	13:11 They loved their songs, legends, epic-tales, and were enthusiastic about learning them, and believed in them, and persevered in them. Toward each other they manifested spite and envy, hostility, grudges. They nibbled at each other, and a man would betray his comrade and his brother:
13:12 Սիրելիք սիրելեաց, եւ մերձաւորք մերձաւորաց, եւ ընտանիք ընտանեաց, ազգականք ազգականաց, խնամիք խնամեաց դնէին գայթակղութիւն:	13:12 Lovers tried to scandalize their loved ones, relations their relatives, families their families, members of the same azg other members, and in-laws, their inlaws:
13:13 Անդ էր տեսանել այր ընկերի արեամբք ծարաւեալք ըմպելով, ոգովք չափ գային վնասուցն` անխրատ վարս եւ անհանճար միտս ունելով:	13:13 Then one could have seen a man, thirsting for the blood of a comrade, drinking it, how people competed to harm each other, possessing crooked behavior and stupid minds:
13:14 Եւ զդիցն հնութեան պաշտամունս ի նմանութիւն պոռնկութեան գործոյն ընդ խաւար կատարէին. եւ ոմանք զնոյն իսկ ցանգութիւն գիջութեան պոռնկութեան կատարէին յանձինս իւրեաց:	13:14 And, like committing adultery, during the night they performed the worship of the deities of old. And some even personally performed the lust of foul adultery:
13:15 Վասն այսորիկ ոչ զխրատ իմաստութեան լսէին, եւ ոչ առաջնորդացն ասելոյ զԱստուծոյ պատգամսն անսացեալք հնազանդէին. այլ վասն ի նոցանէն յանդիմանութեանն` ատէին եւ հալածէին զնոսա եւ սպանանէին:	13:15 They did not heed intelligent advice, nor did they submit to commandments of God preached by leaders; rather, because of such reproachful words, leaders were hated, persecuted and killed:
13:16 Եւ ըստ մարգարէական բանին առ նոսա ասելոյ, թէ «Ատէին ի դրունս զյանդիմանիչս», եւ զբանս սուրբս արհամարհէին:	13:16 Regarding them, it was as the prophetic expression said, that: “They hate the reprimanders at the gates:
13:17 Քանզի ոչ գիտէին թէ որպէս այլոց ազգացն եւ հաւատացելոցն կամ իմաստնոցն ետ նոցա զգիտութիւն ճշմարտութեան հաւատոցն աստուածաբանիւ քարոզութեանն, որպէս որք ընկալանն` առին գոհութեամբ եւ հաւատացին եւ վայելեցին ի շնորհս մարդասիրութեանն արդեւք, այլ ըստ հրէական մտացն կուրացելոց եւ խաւարելոց եւ կաղացելոցն ի ճշմարտութենէն:	13:17 Thus did the Armenians scorn the blessed words. For the preaching of the divine word did not give them knowledge of the true faith as it did to other peoples, to the believers and wise men, who thankfully accepted and enjoyed the grace of God’s humanity. Rather, like the Jews, with their blinded and benighted minds, they were lame in seeking the truth:
13:18 Թերեւս եւ առ այս ազգ միտէր բանն մարգարէական յառաջգիտական, եթէ «Որդիք անմիտք, եւ ոչ որդիք իմաստունք. իմաստունք են զչար գործել, եւ զբարի գործել նոքա երբէք ինչ ոչ գիտացին:	13:18 Perhaps the warning words of the prophet applied to this people also, that: “The foolish, stupid sons, show wisdom in working evil, but are completely incapable of doing good:
13:19 Եւ դարձեալ ասէ. «Որդիք եղջերիկք, խստասիրտք, խստաշունչք, ոյք դառնացուցին զիս նոքա եւ հարք իւրեանց:	13:19 Or: “The harsh-faced, hard-hearted, severe sons and their fathers have grieved me:
13:20 Այսպէս լքեալք եւ սոքա, զի ոչ իմացան եւ ոչ հաւատացին յաներեւոյթսն Աստուծոյ երեւելեօքս. յարարածոց աստի չ իմացան` զարարիչն եւ զկարգիչ եւ զխնամիչն առնուլ ի միտ:	13:20 Thus, they too were abandoned since they did not understand and they did not believe in the invisibility of God as revealed through visible words. They could not differentiate the Creator from the created, the regulator, the protector:
13:21 Յաճախեաց զերեւոյթ նշանս իւր եւ զսքանչելիս, մինչեւ զմարդկային բնութիւնս շարժեաց ի կերպարանս անասնոյ, ուստի փրկութեանն նոցա լինէին պատճառք:	13:21 He increased His visible miracles such that human nature was raised from the forms of animals, and He became the cause of their salvation:
13:22 Եւ մինչեւ յայս յանպիտան եւ յանմիտ թագաւորութիւնն իսկ, առ այն թագաւորաւ Տիրանաւ, ընչ նոյն իսկ ընդ այս նայեցեալք, անցուցին չարութեամբք քան յամենայն դարս:	13:22 During the period of this despicable and foolish reign, during the reign of king Tiran the acts of wickedness that were committed surpassed those of all previous ages:
13:23 Մանաւանդ քան զամենայն, զի զգլխաւորն առաջնորդն թոպամահ սպանին, եւ այնուհետեւ ըստ կամաց գնային:	13:23 Most of all was the fact that they beat to death the principal and leader Yusik, and then did as they pleased:
13:24 Քանզի ոչ ոք այն ոք գոյր, յորմէ խիթայինն յանդիմանութեանն` որ նոցա արգել անկանէր գնալ յանօրէն ճանապարհն ելանել:	13:24 Thereafter there was no one from whose reproach they would draw back, who would prevent them from going on the road of impiety:
13:25 Ապա բարձեալ թողեալ եղեն նոքա ի ձեռանէ տեառն, երթեալք զհետ կամաց սրտից իւրեանց. ապա չ կայր ոք առաջնորդ եւ ոչ գլուխ քահանայութեանն:	13:25 Rather, their Lord quit them, and they pursued their hearts’ desires, for there was neither leader nor head of the priesthood:
13:26 Սակայն փոյթք եղեն նոքա ոչ վասն ճշմարտութեան ինչ խնդրել իւրեանց հովիւ կամ առաջնորդ` որ կայցէ գլուխ ժողովրդեանն հօտապետութեանն, այլ բանից ընկեր իւրեանց խնդրէին զայն ոք` որ ըստ նոցա կամացն վարիցէ:	13:26 However, they were indeed interested in finding a new katoghikos not for the sake of Truth, a shepherd, leader, or head of the flock, but they sought someone who would keep them company and conduct matters in accordance with their wishes:
13:27 Յայնժամ խորհուրդ արարեալ թագաւորին եւ իշխանացն, եւ համօրէն իսկ աշխարհին թէ զո՞ արժանի այնմ իմիք գտանիցեն. քանզի երկու մնացեալք երկուորիք երկու մանգունք, միումն Պապ անուն, եւ միումն Աթանագինէս, ճանաչէին ստահակք եւ անխրատք, որք ոչ ինչ ըստ իմաստութեան աստուածեղէն գրոց, եւ ոչ վարժ հրահանգօք առաքինութեանցն, եւ ոչ հօրն իւրեանց չափոց ինչ նմանեցին միտ եղեալ, եւ ոչ ընդ իւրեանց ծնիչսն հայրն Յուսիկ նայեցան, եւ ոչ մեծին Գրիգորի յառաքինութիւնսն ուշ եդին, եւ ոչ զիւրեանց հոգեւորն պատուականութիւն` յաւիտենական կենացն զպատիւ ինչ եղին ի մտի:	13:27 In that period the king, the princes, and indeed the entire land consulted to see whom they could find worthy of the katoghikosate; for the two remaining twin sons of Yusik, Pap and Atanagines were recognized as petulant and undisciplined. They lacked the learning of divine Scripture, and had no training in virtue. They did not resemble their fathers or their progenitor Yusik. They did not seek to be virtuous like Gregory the great, nor did they think about their spiritual honor, the honor of eternal life:
13:28 Այլ իւրեանց ժամանակի դարուն նմանեալք, եւ պանձացեալք յիւրեանց յանցաւոր սնոտի ի մարմնաւոր տոհմականութիւնն ազգականութեան, զինուորական զվարսն ընտրեցին:	13:28 Rather, they resembled the people of their own age, and, boasting of their earthly noble pedigree they chose the military life:
13:29 Վասն այնորիկ անընտիրք եղեալք, ի հպարտութեանն խոտեցան ըստ յառաջագոյն տեսլեանն հօրն իւրեանց. ոչ մտին ի լուծ աստուածպաշտութեանն:	13:29 As a result, they were not chosen and were rejected because of their arrogance, in accordance with the previous vision of their father, and they did not attach themselves to the yoke of piety:
13:30 Եւ ոչ այլ ոք ի նմին տանէ զաւակին Գրիգորի գոյր ոք. զի այնչափ իսկ կային մարմնաւոր զաւակին, եւ սոքա ինչ ոչ թէ արժանի հարցն գնացեալ նմանեցին վարուց:	13:30 However, there were no other offspring from the tun of Gregory - these were the only ones, and because of their behavior, they were unworthy of their fathers:
13:31 Եւ այլ ոչ ոք էր, որ զառաջնորդութիւն գլխաւորութեան քահանայապետութեանն վերակացութեանն ոք տէրունական տանն հրամանատարութեանն կատարեալ, պաշտաման յաջորդէր:	13:31 There was no one to perform the role of leadership of the chief-priest’s superintendency, or commander of the Church:
