37:0 Եւ կատարեալ զաւուրս ձմեռնային ցրտաշունչ աւդոցն եւ հասեալ ի տաւն մեծ զատկին բովանդակ ուխտապահքն, եւ ամենայն աշխարհի եղեւ խնդութիւն, հրեշտակաց եւ մարդկան:

 37:0 When the bitter days of winter were passed and the great feast of Easter arrived, the oath-keepers and the entire world—angels and men—experienced joy:

37:1 քանզի խառնուրդք խաղաղութեան եղեն ընդ միմեանս աւետաւոր յարութեամբ կենարարին. զոր տաւնեալ ուրախութեամբ զուարճանային:

 37:1 For there were engagements of peace anong them at the good news of the Savior’s resurrection, and with joyful happiness, they celebrated this:

37:2 Եւ յետ սակաւ ինչ աւուրց անցելոց լուան, եթէ զաւր եհաս բազում ի Հեր եւ ի Զարեւանդ գաւառ:

 37:2 After a few days had passed, they heard that many troops had come to the districts of Her and Zarewand:

37:3 Եւ երանելի սպարապետն Հայոց տէրն Մամիկոնէից Վարդան ազդ առնէր ուխտապահացն, որք յաղագս տաւնի աւուրցն երթեալք էին ի տունս իւրեանց` կատարել զտաւնն զատկի առ ընտանիս իւրեանց, եթէ «Գունդ բազում հասեալ գայ, բերելով աստուածասիրացն պսակս երկնաւորս. արդ` որ ոք ցանկայ առնուլ` աճապարեցէ՛ք, զի մի՛ վրիպեսցի ոք եւ զղջանայցէ:

 37:3 The venerable sparapet of Armenia, Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans, sent the following message to the oath-keepers who had gone to their own homes to celebrate the Easter holiday with their families: “Many brigades (of Iranians) have arrived, bringing along divine crowns for the lovers of God. Now let whoever wants to participate make haste so that he does not miss out and regret it:

37:4 Եւ եթէ ոք խորհի այլազգ ինչ, որպէս եւ այլքն, որք խոտորեցան զկնի սատանայի` դադարեալ հանգիցէ` ուր եւ թուեսցի հաճոյ ումեք:

 37:4 Should anyone have other plans, as do those who abandoned themselves to Satan, let him stay and relax wherever it pleases him:

37:5 Քանզի ոչ ոք պսակի ընդ ընկերաց իւրոց` թէ ոչ տանջի. այլ իւրաքանչիւր ոք անձին իւրում գանձէ զհողեղէնսս եւ զյաւիտենականսն:

 37:5 For none will be crowned with his comrades, if he does not suffer. Let each one range himself now, with the mortals, or with the immortals:

37:6 Եւ զայս լուեալ ճշմարտասիրացն եւ զանմահութիւն սիրողացն` դղրդեցան, ելեւելս առնելով զմիմեամբք, որպէս հաւտք, որ ի ձայն աղի փութայցեն զկնի հովուացն:

 37:6 Those who loved truth, and longed for immortality were moved, and urged each other on, resembling a flock which hurries after the shepherd’s call:

37:7 Թուի ինձ, ոչ այնպէս ընթացեալ երագունս Աբրահամայ ի տանել զորթն հրեշտակացն, որք խոստացան տալ նմա զորդին` որպէս ճեպեալ ընթանային զաւրքն Հայոց զհետ երանելւոյն Վարդանայ սպարապետին Հայոց, երթալ յընթրիսն Քրիստոսի եւ ուտել զհաց հրեշտակաց:

 37:7 It seems to me that Abraham did not go as quickly bearing a calf to the angels who had promised him a son, as the Armenian troops hastened after the venerable Vardan, sparapet of Armenia. They were going to Christ’s supper, to eat the bread of the angels:

37:8 Եւ այսպէս եղեալք ըստ նմանութեան սուրբ առաքելոցն ամենեքեան մի սիրտ եւ մի հոգի`առաքէր երանելի սպարապետն Հայոց Վարդան, միաբանութեամբ աւագանւոյն որ ընդ նմայն էին, սեպուհ մի յազգէն Ամատունեաց, որում անուն էր Առանձար, իբրեւ երեք հարիւր հեծելով` երթալ լրտեսել զբազմութիւն զաւրացն Պարսից, եւ տալ գրգիռս, եթէ հնար իցէ, առ ի փութապէս, ասէ, գալ բերել մեզ զպսակս արքայութեան, զոր ի ձեռն նոցա պարգեւէ մեզ Փրկիչն Քրիստոս, յաւիտենից բարութեանցն տուիչ:

 37:8 Thus they resembled the blessed Apostles, all of one heart and of one soul. The venerable sparapet of Armenia , Vardan, sent a sepuh named Arhanjar of the Amatunik’ azg together with the nobility with him—some [300] cavalry—to go and spy on the multitude of Iranian troops and to harass them, so that if possible, Vardan said, they might quickly come and bring us our crowns of the Kingdom which the Savior Christ, the giver of eternal goodness, will bestow upon us through them:

37:9 Եւ երթեալ Առանձար եւ գունդն որ ընդ նմա` այնպէս շնորհեցաւ նմա յԱստուծոյ, որպէս զի տեսին զբանակն Պարսից. եւ զհզաւր վերջապահ թեւով միով անկեալ` զբազումս հանէին ընդ սուր, եւ զայլս փախստականս արարեալ արկանէին ի զաւրն Պարսից. եւ ինքեանք դարձեալ ողջանդամք հասանէին ուրախութեամբ ի գունդն Հայոց եւ պատմէին նոցա զԱստուծոյ զաւրութիւնն, զոր յաջողեաց նոցա Փրկիչն:

 37:9 Arhanjar and the brigade with him departed and was so favored by God that they saw the Iranian army and fell on one wing of the mighty rear-guard, putting many to the sword, and sending others fleeing back to the Iranian army. (The Armenian troops) returned unharmed in joy to the Armenian brigade and spoke of God’s strength which the Savior had aided them with:

37:10 Եւ լուեալ երանելւոյ սպարապետին Վարդանայ հանդերձ միահամուռ զաւրաւքն` գոհանային եւ աւրհնէին զամենահզաւրն Աստուած:

 37:10 When the venerable sparapet Vardan and the masses of the troops heard the news, they glorified and blessed omnipotent God:

37:11 Պատմէին եւ վասն զաւրագլխացն, թէ Մուշկանն Նիւսալաւուրտ եւ Դողվճն են. տային գիտել եւ զայն եւս սթափութեամբ հասանել ի միջոյ կողման աշխարհիս:

 37:11 Arhanjar’s men also said that the military commanders were the Mushkan Niwsalawurt and Doghvch, and that (the Iranians) were (trying) to come into the center of the land quickly:

37:12 Զոր լուեալ երանելւոյ սպարապետին Հայոց եւ որ ընդ նմայն էին` եւս առաւել ճեպէին երթալ ընդդէմ նոցա. նախ` վասն վաղվաղակի պատահելոյ նոցա ժամու մարտիրոսութեան. քանզի անձանձրոյթ աղաւթէին հանապազ ի տուէ եւ ի գիշերի, լինել արժանի այնպիսի մասին երկնաւորի. եւ երկրորդ` ասէին, թերեւս անդէն ի տեղւոջն ի Հեր եւ ի Զարեւանդ գաւառին վճարին ելք գործոյն պատերազմին, եւ ոչ ոք լինէր արգել զաւրուն Պարսից հասանել յաշխարհն Հայոց սպանութեամբ եւ գերելով յարձակել եւ վնասել:

 37:12 When the venerable sparapet of Armenia and those with him heard this, they strived yet more to go against them. First, they wanted to quickly meet with the hour of their martyrdom (since they had been incessantly praying day and night that they be worthy to have this share of the divine); second, they said, if warfare does not take place in the districts of Her and Zarewand, and if no one stops the Iranian army, they will come into the land of Armenia bringing death, taking captives, and causing harm:

37:13 Եւ սոցա թէպէտ եւ ածեալ զայսպիսի ինչ զմտաւ կամէին փութալ` սակայն եւս առաւել ստիպով եկեալ հասանէին գունդն Պարսից ի գաւառն Արտազ, հուպ ի գեաւղն որ կոչի Աւարայր, ի շրջափակ տեղի Տղմուտ դաշտին, զոր ընտրեաց յաղագս երկիւղի զաւրացն Հայոց. ամուր ապաստանի անձանց համարէին պատշաճ, եւ ի միջի նորա ածեալ ղակիշ բանակէին:

 37:13 Thinking these things, (the Armenian army) wanted to hurry, but before that, the Iranian brigade came more quickly (than expected) to the district of Artaz, close to the village called Awarayr. They came to an enclosed place in the Tghmut plain which was chosen out of fear of the Armenian troops. Considering it a proper refuge for themselves, they pitched camp in its midst:
