38:0 Իսկ ի յաւուր ուրբաթու մեծի տաւնին պենդէկոստէին դիմեալ հասանէին մերձ ի նոյն տեղիս զաւրքն Հայոց, գտեալ անպատրաստագոյն զզաւրսն Պարսից. որոց թէ կամեցեալ էին` կարող էին մասնաւորապէս վնասել երամակարձակ ծուլացելոցն. բայց թոյլ տուեալ դադարեցին յայնմ աւուր:

 38:0 Now on Friday of the great feast of Pentecost, the Armenian troops arrived near the same site and found the Iranian troops unprepared. Had they wanted, they could have inflicted unusually great harm (on the Iranians) who were like a flock that had lazily dispersed. But they permitted them to rest that day:

38:1 քանզի ոչ էր եդեալ ի մտի նահատակութեան փափաքողաց` այնուհետեւ յաղթել, վասն տեսանելոյ հանապազաւր զհոգեկորուսացն զապականումն, այլ միշտ եւ հանապազ ի կէտ կոչման եւ տենչալի մարտիրոսութեանն փութանային հասանել:

 38:1 For those who longed and yearned for martyrdom did not want to see it sullied by a soul-losing pollution; rather, at a moment’s call, they hastened to attain that longed-for martyrdom:

38:2 Եւ ժողովեալք այնուհետեւ մաւտ առ զաւրսն Պարսից բանակէին, մինչ եդեալ սահմանն ընթացից տուընջեանն կատարէր:

 38:2 Then (the Armenians) gathered and encamped near the Iranian troops. The day drew to a close:

38:3 Եւ հասեալք ի ժամ երեկոյին եւ զկանոն պաշտաման ժամու աղաւթիցն ըստ սովորութեանն լցեալ` զուարճանային չափաւոր ուրախութեամբ կերակրովքն:

 38:3 Evening approached, and as usual they held worship and were filled with prayers. They modestly rejoiced in their food:

38:4 Եւ կատարեալ զամենայն` առնուին հրաման ի սուրբ քահանայիցն` արթուն խնդրուածովք կատարել զգիշերն յաղաւթս:

 38:4 Having done all of this they accepted a command of the holy priests to say the evening prayers with wakeful entreaties:

38:5 Եւ զցայգն ամենայն դասք քահանայիցն, մերթ սաղմոսարանին գոբղայիւք, մերթ վարդապետական բանիւք, քաջալերէին զբազմութիւն զաւրացն` վայր մի քաջանալ, եւ անսպառ բարեացն լինել ժառանգաւոր:

 38:5 Until morning all the ranks of priests encouraged the multitude of troops (sometimes with laments from the psalm-book, sometimes with words of doctrine) to take heart for a moment, and then to inherit inexhaustible goodness:

38:6 Իսկ սուրբ երէցն Յովսէփ, որ եւ զկաթողիկոսութեանն Հայոց ունէր զաթոռ, հրաման տայր երանելւոյն առն Աստուծոյ Ղեւոնդի խրատել զժողովուրդն եւ քաջալերել:

 38:6 The holy priest Yovsep’, who held the throne of the kat’oghikosate of Armenia, commanded Ghewond, that venerable man of God, to advise and encourage the people:

38:7 Եւ սուրբ երէցն Ղեւոնդ զամենայն զգիշերն անձանձրոյթ առաքելական վարդապետութեամբ զաւրացուցեալ ուսուցանէր զամենեսեան յորդաբուղխ իմաստութեամբ, առակաց մեկնութեամբք, հոգէշնորհ վարդապետութեամբ. որոյ բանքն նման քաղցրութեան մեղու բղխէին ի բերանոյ արդարոյն, որ էր լսողացն ցնծութիւն. եւ ախորժաբար զնա ծանուցանէր վերին ազդեցութեամբ լուսաճաճանչ պայծառութիւնն ի նմա ներքին մարդոյն եւ տեսակութիւն հրեշտականման երեսացն կերպարանի:

 38:7 The holy priest Ghewond fortified and taught everyone the entire night through with tireless Apostolic doctrine, and copious wisdom, with interpretations of the proverbs and illuminating doctrine. The words which flowed like sweet honey from the mouth of this just man brought delight to the listeners. A luminous clarity revealed itself in him by heavenly influence, and he appeared to have the face of an angel:

38:8 Զոր եւ յառաջագոյն ժամանակի, կալով ի քուն սրբոյն, այրն Աստուծոյ Մաշտոց վարդապետն նորին` հանդերձ եւ այլ աշակերտաւք իւրովք, երանելեաւն Կորեամբ եւ Արձանաւ, տեսանէին արթնութեամբ ճառագայթեալ շուրջ զնովաւ լոյս սաստիկ. որք անդէն եւ անդ ծանեան երանելի արքն սուրբ Հոգւով զվախճան սրբոյն, թէ նահատակութեամբ կատարի. զոր թէպէտ եւ նմա ոչ յայտնեցին զսքանչելագործութեան զտեսութիւնն, սակայն ի բազում շշնջելն` պատմեալ հռչակեցաւ բան երեւմանս այսորիկ:

 38:8 At an earlier time (in his life) his vardapet the man of God, Mashtoc’, had chanced upon (Ghewond) while the blessed man was sleeping. Together with others of his students, the venerable Koriwn and Arjan, (Mashtoc’) saw in waking how a brilliant light radiated forth around him. Then and there, through the holy Spirit, these venerable men realized that the blessed man (Ghewond) would die a martyr’s death. Although they did not reveal this miraculous occurrence to him, nonetheless word of this vision spread about through many rumours:

38:9 Որ յուսուցանելն իւրում բազում բանս հոգեւորս` յիշեցուցանէր ամենեցուն զվարս եւ զժուժկալութիւն առաջնոցն, եւ նախ զանպատումն զհամբերութիւն սրբոյն Գրիգորի, ապա զայլոցն ամենեցուն. «Որոց գիտացեալ, ասէ, զվաղ եւ զանագան կենցաղոյս զվախճան` ընտրեցին ըմբռնել զյաւիտենից կեանսն:

 38:9 Ghewond recalled for all who depended on him many spiritual things, (such as) the lives and forbearance of earlier people. (He spoke) first of the dishonoring and patience of saint Gregory, and then about all the others. He note: “Those who experience a premature and slow death, have chosen eternal life:

38:10 Ոմանք տանջանաւք եւ մահուամբ, ոմանք պահաւք եւ գետնատարած անկողնաւք, այլք աղքատսիրութեամբք եւ աւտարասիրութեամբք յանգէտս ընդունել զհրեշտակս արժանի եղեն. եւ կէսք աշխարհաշինութեամբք եւ արդար դատողութեամբ երեւեալ` ընտիր գտան Աստուծոյ:

 38:10 Some people were unknowingly worthy of receiving the Good News—people who (experienced) torments and death, some keeping fasts, on pallets, others because of their love for the poor and for strangers. Others were chosen by God for their judicious judgements and for making the country bloom:

38:11 Քանզի ոչ բոլորեցունց դիպի մարտիրոսութեան վիճակն, այլ ըստ ժամանակի որպէս եւ բաշխէ վերին տեսչութիւն:

 38:11 But the fate of a martyr is not shared by all, rather it is given from time to time by heavenly Providence:

38:12 Եւ պարտին առողքն` արդար վաճառականութեամբ գնել ընդ անցաւորիս զանանցն, ընդ ապականացուիս զանանց բարութիւնսն:

 38:12 Those who receive it should purchase through just business the eternal rather than the transitory, eternal goodness rather than pollution:

38:13 Իսկ պահեալքդ այժմ մեծի եւ պատուական բաժակի` փութասցուք լինել արժանի հասանել ի մասն ժառանգութեան սրբոցն ի լոյս. զորոց զպատուականութիւնն սաղմոսերգուն գոչէ ասելով. Պատուական է առաջի Տեառն մահ սրբոց իւրոց:

 38:13 And now those of us who have been kept for the great and honorable Cup will hasten to be worthy of attaining a portion of the inheritance of the luminous saints. The psalmist sang of their respectability: ’The death of His saints before the Lord is respectable [Psalm 125, 15] ’:

38:14 Ահա եւ ճգնասէրն Գրիգորիոս վարդապետն ձեր կոչէ զձեզ յերկնային քաղաքն Երուսաղէմ, յամենատենչ եւ յանուշահոտ ընթրիսն Քրիստոսի, ուստի մերժեալ են ցաւք եւ տրտմութիւնք եւ հեծութիւնք:

 38:14 Behold the ascetic Gregory, your vardapet calls you to the heavenly city of Jerusalem, to the most desired and fragrant supper of Christ, where pain and sorrow and lamentations do not exist:

38:15 Բազում եւ այլ բանիւք հոգեղինաւք եւ շնորհաւք վարդապետութեամբք քաջալերէր զիւրաքանչիւր ոք ի մեծամեծ աւագանւոյն Հայոց սուրբն Ղեւոնդ, հանդերձ երանելեաւն Յովսէփաւ. որ թէպէտ եւ զձեռնադրութիւն երիցութեան ունէր` սակայն յաթոռ կաթողիկոսութեանն էր վիճակեալ արժանաւորապէս:

 38:15 The blessed Ghewond encouraged each member of the grandee nobility of Armenia with many other words of spiritual and inspired doctrine. He was aided by the venerable Yovsep’, who, although ordained as a presbyter, nonetheless had the fortune to be worthy of the kat’olikosal throne:

38:16 Որոց խրատեալ եւ զաւրացուցեալ հոգեւոր բանիւք զամենայն գիշերն` լինէր ամենայն մարդ ի կամաւոր լսողացն վառեալ, որպէս աներկիւղ ամրութեամբ, սուրբ Հոգւոյն զինու:

 38:16 They counseled and fortified them with spiritual words all night, until each of the willing listeners became, as it were, armed with fearless strength by the holy Spirit:

38:17 Որք զաւրինադրեալ ժամս գիշերոյն կարծէին երկայնագոյն քան զայլ գիշերացն, եւ տեսանել զառաւաւտ փրկութեանն բաղձային, որպէս զի հասեալք արբցեն զբաժակ արքայութեանն երկնից:

 38:17 These were people to whom the decreed hours of the night seemed longer than on other nights, and they longed to see the dawn of salvation, to be able to drink the Cup of the Kingdom of Heaven:

38:18 Որոց աստուածաշնորհ բանից եւ մարտիրոսայորդոր վարդապետութեան Հրեշտականման տեառն Յովսէփայ եւ Ղեւոնդի մտադիւրութեամբ լուեալ երանելւոյն Վարդանայ տեառն Մամիկոնէից` տայր պատասխանի, թէ:

 38:18 When the venerable Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans, heard the divinely-inspired words and the doctrine exhorting martyrdom from the angelic lord Yovsep’ and the diligent Ghewond, he replied:

38:19 Սուրբ քահանայից եկեղեցւոյ պատիւ ձեռնադրութեան ոչ է ի մարդկանէ, այլ ի սուրբ Հոգւոյն յաջորդեալ շնորհէ. նոյնպէս եւ բանք սոցա զամենայն առողջ խորհուրդս լսողացն ի յերկինս հայեցուցանէ. որպէս եւ այժմ իսկ զամենայն գիշերս անհանգիստ ձայնիւ յորդորէին զամենեսեան յերկնաւոր ընթրիսն, յիշեցուցանելով մեզ զչարչարանսն սրբոյն Գրիգորի. յորոց բազումք որ աստ կամք, ոչ միայն աշակերտք, այլ ազգախառնութեամբ եմք հաղորդեալք:

 38:19 The dignity of ordination of blessed priests of the Church comes not from mankind, but is bestowed by the holy Spirit. Their words cause all rational listeners to look toward Heaven, just as this very night long they have been ceaselessly urging everyone to the Heavenly banquet, recalling for us the torments of saint Gregory. Many here are not only (Gregory’s) pupils, but are blood-relations:

38:20 Փութասցո՛ւք ժամանել ի հարսանիսն Քրիստոսի եւ ի հրաւիրակսն, ի գունդ սուրբ առաքելոցն, եւ յընթրատուն Քրիստոս, որ բացեալ զդուռն արքայութեանն` սպասէ ընդունել զամենեսեան եւ ուրախ առնել. որոյ ուրախութիւնն մշտնջենաւոր է եւ անանց եւ անվախճան:

 38:20 Let us hasten to the wedding of Christ, to join the guests, the brigade of holy Apostles, in Christ’s dining hall where (Christ) has opened the door of the Kingdom and waits to receive everyone and make them happy with an eternal, endless and immortal happiness:

38:21 Փութասցո՛ւք առանց յապաղելոյ, եւ մի՛ ոք նման Յուդայի, որ յառաքելական դասուէն քակտեցաւ` նման նմա գտցի. որպէս եւ յայսմ գիշերի տեսէք, որք մեղկեալ զկնի սատանայի ընթացան:

 38:21 Let us make haste without delay. And let none resemble Judas who was torn from the ranks of the Apostles. As you have seen tonight, those who weaken trail after Satan:

38:22 Այլ ես բաժակին, որում վաղնջուցն ցանկացեալն էի` փափաքանաւք ընդունիմ, եւ ըստ գրեցելումն գոչեմ. Զբաժակ փրկութեան ընկալայց եւ զանուն Տեառն կարդացից:

 38:22 But I will take that cup which I have long desired and drink of it with eagerness, crying out the Biblical prescription: ’I take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. ’:

38:23 Եւ զայս ամենայն այսպէս խաւսեցեալ սրբոյ զաւրավարին` ի ժամ հաւուն ասելոյ հրաման տային սուրբն Յովսէփ եւ Ղեւոնդ, հանդերձ ամենայն քահանայիւքն, զպաշտաւն կանոնին կատարել, որով նպարակեալ վառեալ զինու Հոգւոյն յուղարկէին յաստուածատունկ վայելչութեան դրախտն:

 38:23 After the blessed general had said all of this, at cock’s crow the holy Yovsep’ and Ghewond commanded all the priests to perform mass, so that armed with the holy Spirit (the troops) would be accompanied to God’s beautiful Paradise:

38:24 Եւ հաղորդեալ զաւրացն Հայոց ի պատուական խորհրդոյն մարմնոյ եւ արեան՝ ի գործ առաջիկայ երկնաւոր իրացն փութային:

 38:24 After the Armenian troops had communed in the body and blood (of Christ), they hastened to work on this divine matter before them:
