73:0 Իսկ յետ աւուրց ինչ բազմաց անցելոց, տեսեալ իմաստախնդիր մարդոց եւ հանճարեղ անձանց զպսակումն քաջ սեպհին Մամիկոնէից զսրբոյն Վասակայ, զեղբաւր զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ` անդէն եւ անդ ծանեան, թէ վասն զի մերձ ուրեմն էր կատարումն սրբոյն. որ եւ խնդրեաց յԱստուծոյ սուրբն Վասակ` տեսանել ի մարմնի զեկս անձկալի եղբաւրն իւրոյ Վարդայ, եւ ապա զաւր ըղձի խնդրոյ իւրոյ ըմբռնել ցնծալով:

 73:0 Now after many days had passed, wise and learned people observed a halo over the brave sepuh Vasak Mamikonean brother of Armenia’s general, Vahan, and knew thereby that the blessed man’s end was approaching. The holy Vasak had asked God to allow him to see the arrival of his brother Vard in the flesh, and then to take (him) joyfully on the day his request was granted:

73:1 Եւ ամենահզաւրն Աստուած եղեւ փութով կատարիչ խնդրոյ սրբոյն իւրոյ, ոչ ինչ յերկարեալ յապաղեաց զկամս առնն, այլ վաղվաղակի եւ ճեպով ընկալեալ զխնդիրն, եւ ածեալ զեղբայրն զՎարդ եւ ցուցեալ նմա եւ ամենեցուն` եթող ողջամբ առ մնացեալ կենդանի ծառայսն իւր, եւ զսուրբ վկայն իւր զՎասակ փոխեալ առ ինքն` պսակեալ բնակեցոյց յարքայութեան խորանսն, ընդ հրեշտակս յերկինս:

 73:1 Almighty God quickly implemented the request of His saint, in no way delayed granting the man’s desire, but quickly accepted the request, sent (Vasak’s) brother Vard back and showed him to (Vasak) and to everyone, He left (Vard) in health among his remaining living servants, and called His blessed witness, Vasak to him, crowning him and causing him to dwell in the mansion of His Kingdom, among the angels of Heaven:

73:2 Գային հասանէին այնուհետեւ ի Ծաղկուտն. եւ կամեցեալք առ վայր մի հանգչել ի ջերմկին որ կոչի Վարշակի:

 73:2 The Armenians then reached Caghkeotn where they wanted to relax awhile in the baths called Varshaki:

73:3 գայր հասանէր դեսպան ի թագաւորէն Վրաց Վախթանգայ, թէ «Գունդ սաստիկ եհաս յերկիրս Վրաց, եւ իմ տեսեալ, թէ ոչ եմ կարող կալ առաջի` խոյս տուեալ ի լերինս Հայոց, մաւտ ի սահմանակցութեանն Վրաց` մնամ ձեզ:

 73:3 An emissary came to them from the king of Iberia (Georgia), Vaxt’ang, saying: “An enormous brigade has reached the country of Iberia. When I saw that I could not resist it, I fled to the Armenian mountains which border on Iberia, and I await you there:

73:4 Եւ նամակ ունէր գրեալ ի Վախթանգայ խաբէութեամբ, թէ «Հոն գնդի հրաման ետու գալ, եւ չեւ եւս հասին. բայց մինչ դուք գայք` հասանեն, եւ այնուհետեւ դուք եւ մեք եւ Հոնք զնոսա կորուսանեմք:

 73:4 The emissary had a letter supposedly written by Vaxt’ang which note: “I have commanded a brigade of Huns to come, but they have not arrived yet. But by the time you arrive, they will be here:

73:5 Բայց թուի ինձ, թէ յորժամ Հոն հասանէ, մեզ բնաւ եւ աշխատել ինչ ոչ հասանէ. նոքա իսկ վճարեն զգործն. զի անչափ բազմութեան հրաման ետու գալ:

 73:5 Then you, we, and the Huns shall destroy them. But it seems to me that when the Huns arrive, we shall not have to participate. They will do the job, for I have ordered such a great multitude to come:

73:6 Եւ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի եւ ամենայն աւագ տանուտերացն եւ սեպհացն Հայոց, վասն զի երդումն էր Աւետարանաւ եւ խաչիւ ընդ թագաւորին Վրաց Վախթանգայ` յարուցեալ վաղվաղակի եւ անյապաղ ամենայն զաւրքն Հայոց առ արքայն Վրաց հասանէին, եւ բանակեալք առ վայր մի ի գաւառին Կանգարաց դադարէին:

 73:6 Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, all the senior tanuters and sepuhs of Armenia, with all the troops of Armenia, quickly arose and went to the king of Iberia (Georgia) without delay since they had sworn an oath with king Vaxt’ang of Iberia, on the Gospel and Cross. They temporarily encamped in the district of Kangark’:

73:7 Ուր պատրողական բանիւք խաբէութեան թարթափեցուցանէր թագաւորն Վրաց Վախթանգ զմիտս զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի եւ զայլ աւագ տանուտերացն Հայոց. մերթ ասելով, թէ:

 73:7 Where Vaxt’ang, the king of Iberia, distracted Armenia’s general Vahan Mamikonean and the other senior tanuters of Armenia, saying, at times:

73:8 Միհրանայ զձեր եկդ լուեալ` խոյս ետ ի սահմանաց Վրաց, եւ յԱղուանս փախեաւ առ երկիւղի. եւ դարձեալ` թէ «Զերկուս աւուրս` եւ գունդք Հոնաց հասանեն». եւ անցեալ երկու աւուրք ժամադիր խաբէութեանն` ապա յերրորդ եւ ի չորրորդ աւր ձգէր զպատճառադրութիւնն, եւ յետ այնորիկ յայլ ի վեց եւ յեաւթն աւր:

 73:8 When Mihran heard about your arrival, out of fear he fled from the borders of Iberia to Aghbania (Aghuania).” Then: “The Huns’ brigades will arrive in two days.” But the two days of this deceitful deadline passed, then the third, then the fourth, and (Vaxt’ang) continued with his excuses. Then the sixth and seventh days came and went:

73:9 Դարձեալ լրտեսս տայր արձակել արս ի գնդէն Վրաց եւ Հայոց. որք իջեալ ի տեղիս ինչ դաշտացն` տայր երեւեցուցանել լոյսս կրակաց բազմաց եւ կոճեղս ծառոց զինեալս այրանմանս, ըստ խաբէութեան Մակեդոնացւոյ Աղէկսանդրի:

 73:9 Then he had spies dispatched from the brigade of Iberians and Armenians. They descended to some parts of the plains and made it appear that the lights of many fires blazed there and that the tree trunks were armed like men (in accordance with the trick of Alexander of Macedon:

73:10 Դարձեալ ասէր. «Ոչ գայ գունդն Հոնաց առ մեզ ի լերինսս, այլ ասեն, թէ աստ ի դաշտիս ա՛ծ ցո՛յց մեզ զՀայս, եւ ամենայն բանից քոց հաւատամք, զոր քո խաւսեալ է ընդ մեզ եւ երդուեալ. եւ այնուհետեւ զոր ինչ եւ հրամայես առնուլ մեզ` զամենայն կատարեմք. ապա թէ ոչ` չհաւատամք, թէ Հայք ընդ քեզ միաբան են. բայց թէ արդարեւ զայս տեսանեմք` այնուհետեւ զՊարսիկս ի մեզ թողէք, եւ ձեզ փոյթ մի՛ լիցի:

 73:10 Then (Vaxt’ang) reported: “The Huns’ brigades will not come to us in the mountains. Rather, they say, show us here in the plains the Armenians and then we will believe everything that you have said and vowed to us. Then will we do everything you command. Otherwise, we will not believe that the Armenians are really allied with you. But if we see that it is indeed the case, then leave the Iranians to us and do not worry:

73:11 Արդ` թէ դուք ի դաշտն չիջանէք, եւ Հոն գունդքն, վասն ինձ չհաւատալոյ, ի վեր ի յաշխարհէն չշարժին ուրեք, եւ Միհրան դառնայ եւ զՎիրս աւերէ` ինձ ձեր եկք զի՞նչ աւգուտ է:

 73:11 Now if you do not descend to the plain, and the Huns’ brigades do not believe me and do not move anywhere up from the land, and if Mihran returns and ruins Iberia (Georgia), then what good will your arrival have done me:

73:12 Եւ Հայոց գունդն, վասն զի ուխտադիր էր ընդ թագաւորին Վրաց` զոր ինչ գամ մի ասէր ստոյգ կամ սուտ` ջանային վասն Աւետարանին երկիւղի զամենայն կատարել:

 73:12 The Armenian brigade, since it had made an oath with the king of Iberia attempted to carry out everything he said (be it true or false) because of fear of the Gospel:

73:13 Զի թէպէտ եւ տաւթ էր ժամանակն, հարկաւորեցան իջանել ի դաշտն Ճարմանայնու:

 73:13 Although the season was very hot, they were forced to descend into the Charmanaynu plain:

73:14 Եւ յիշխանացն Հայոց ոմանք ոչ յաջող համարէին զէջս գնդին Հայոց ի Վիրս. զոր թէպէտ եւ բազում անգամ ասացին` չհաւատացեալ բանի ասողացն՝ լռեցին:

 73:14 Some of the Armenian princes did not consider the descent of the Armenian brigade into Iberia as a good thing. Although they said this many times, nonetheless, since they were not believed, they kept quiet:

73:15 Եւ իջեալ գունդն Հայոց ի Վիրս եւ բանակեալք յառաջագրեալ տեղիսն, եւ չեւ եւս անցեալ աւուրք երեք կամ չորք` գայր հասանէր Միհրան եւ բանակէր դէմ յանդիման բանակին Հայոց, մաւտ ի բանակն յայնկոյս գետոյն, զոր Կուր գետն անուանեն. եւ բանակն Հայոց չուեալ յայլ տեղի հեռագոյն ի բանակէն Պարսից, եւ առնէին զիւրեանց աւթեւանին տեղին:

 73:15 The Armenian brigade descended into Iberia (Georgia) and encamped at the aforementioned place. Three or four days had not passed when Mihran came and encamped opposite the Armenian camp, on the other side of the river known as the Kur:

73:16 Եւ բազմաց ի գնդէն Հայոց ի գիշերին յայնմիկ, մոռացեալ զերկիւղ ուխտին Աստուծոյ, եւ զահաւոր երդումն Աւետարանին առ ոտն հարեալ` պատգամագնացութեամբ գաղտ խաւսեցան ընդ իւրաքանչիւր ոք սիրելիս զաւրացն Պարսից, թէ «Մեք ի բռնութենէ զաւրավարիս Հայոց Վահանայ եւ ոչ սրտի կամաւ անկեալ եմք յիրս յայս, արք թուով. բայց միտք մեր եւ խորհուրդք առ ձեզ են. եւ գիտեմք, եթէ ի ձերմէ ծառայութենէ չեմք ելանելոց, այլ վատ անձանց մերոց որսացեալ աճեցուցաք ցայժմ զվնասս ի մեզ:

 73:16 The Armenian camp went to a place more distant from the Iranian camp and lodged there. But that night, many people in the Armenian brigade, forgetting the fear of the oath to God and trampling under foot the terrible vow on the Gospel, secretly communicated with each of their friends in the Iranian army, saying: “Many of us are involved in this matter not because we want to be, but out of fear of Vahan, Armenia’s general. But our plans and thoughts are with you. We know that we would not leave your service but that bad individuals among us to now have sought to increase the damage done to us:

73:17 Բայց արդ` եթէ չյիշիցէք զայս բանս մեր երբէք, եւ առնիցէք մեզ թողութիւն` դուք իշխեցէք:

 73:17 But if you do not ever recall these words of ours, and have mercy on us, you will rule us:

73:18 Այլ մեք վաղիւն, յորժամ ի կռուոյն տեղին գամք` զմեր անձինս եւ զբազումս եւ այլս ընդ մեզ փախուցանեմք ի գնդէս:

 73:18 For tomorrow, when we come to the place of battle, we will quit the brigade and cause many others to flee with us:

73:19 Եւ ընկալեալ երդմամբ ուխտի Պարսկացն` հաստատեցին զբանսն:

 73:19 They swore a vow with the Iranians, and confirmed these words:

73:20 Եւ հասեալ ի վաղիւն ի տեղի պատերազմին` խաւսէր եւ յայն ժամու արքայն Վրաց ընդ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ եւ ընդ այլ աւագ տանուտեարս եւ ընդ սեպուհս Հայոց եւ ասէ. «Լաւ եղեւ մեզ կռուելս այսաւր ընդ զաւրս Պարսից. քանզի մեք իսկ բաւական եմք սոցա, եւ չկարեն կալ առաջի. բայց թէ այսաւր եւս հեղգացեալ էր մեր` գալոց էին Հոնք եւ զանուն յաղթութեանն եւ զաւգուտ աւարիս նոքա տանելոց էին:

 73:20 The next day, when they reached the site of the battle, the king of Iberia (Georgia) at that time also spoke with Vahan, Armenia’s general, and with the other senior tanuters and sepuhs of Armenia, saying: “It is good that we are fighting with the Iranian troops today. For now, we are sufficient for them, and they will be unable to withstand us. But if we had to postpone it by yet another day, the Huns would come and would take the name of triumph as well as the profit of the booty:

73:21 Եւ մինչեւ ցայն ժամ եւս յերկարեալ խաբէր պատիր բանիւք:

 73:21 And at this (late) hour he was still delaying and deceiving with duplicitous words:
