10:226 Հրամայեաց զմի ոմն ի կրտսերագունիցն յառաջ մատուցանել, երէց մի Արշէն անուն, վասն որոյ յառաջ կասկածն իսկ եղեւ սրբոցն:	10:226 He ordered one of the youngest among them to be brought forward, a priest Arshen by name, about whom the saints previously had had suspicions:
10:227 Կապեցին զոտսն եւ զձեռսն, եւ մեծաւ ուժով պրկեցին, մինչեւ ճարճատիւն հատաւ ամենայն ջղացն. եւ այնպէս կայր ցմեծ ժամս յանհնարին պրկոցսն:	10:227 They bound his feet and hands and squeezed him so tightly that all his sinews cracked from the pressure. For a long time, he remained in these unbearable tortures:
10:228 Եբաց սուրբն զբերան իւր եւ ասէ. «Ահա շրջեցան զինեւ շունք բազումք, եւ ժողովք չարաց պաշարեցին զիս. ծակեցին զոտս իմ եւ զձեռս իմ, եւ փոխանակ բերանոյ իմոյ աղաղակեցին ամենայն ոսկերք իմ:	10:228 The saint opened his mouth and note: “Behold, numerous dogs have surrounded me, and crowds of wicked men have beset me. They have pierced my feet and hands, and instead of my mouth all my bones have cried out:
10:229 Լո՛ւր ինձ, Տէր, եւ լո՛ւր ձայնի իմում, եւ ընկալ զոգի իմ ի ժողովս սուրբ զաւրականին քո, որ երեւեցաւ նորակերտ դաստակերտին քոյ:	10:229 Hear me, Lord, and listen to my voice; and receive my spirit in the company of your holy warriors who appeared to your new creature:
10:230 Եւ որ կրտսերս եմ յամենեսեան, ողորմութիւն քո գթացեալ յառաջեցոյց զիս:	10:230 Your merciful compassion has made me, who am the youngest, precede all the others:
10:231 Եւ զայս իբրեւ ասաց, ոչ եւս կարէր բանալ զբերանն յանհնարին պրկոցաց գելարանին:	10:231 After saying this he was no longer able to open his mouth from the insufferable tightening of the press:
10:232 Եւ անդէն վաղվաղակի դահիճքն հրաման առեալ յերից նախարարացն՝ սրով հատանել զպարանոց երանելւոյն, եւ ընկեցին զմարմինն ի խորխորատ մի ցամաք:	10:232 Then the executioners, immediately on receiving a command from the three nobles, cut off the blessed one’s head with a sword and threw his body into a dry pit:
10:233 Եւ անդէն ի տեղւոջն սկսաւ խաւսել Դենշապուհ ընդ եպիսկոպոսին եւ ասէ. «Յորժամ եկի ես յաշխարհն Հայոց՝ զտարի մի եւ վեց ամիս եհաս շրջել ինձ անդ. ոչ յիշեմ ես ամենեւին՝ եթէ բան մի տրտունջ յումեքէ լուայ վասն քո, սոյնպէս եւ առաւել վասն Յովսեփայ. զի դա իսկ էր իշխան ամենայն քրիստոնէից, եւ հաւատարիմ յամենայն իրս արքունի:	10:233 At that very spot Denshapuh began to speak to the bishop, saying: “When I came to Armenia, I had occasion to travel there for a year and six months. I do not at all remember hearing any word of complaint from anyone about you, and even less about Yoseph; for he was the leader of all the Christians and faithful in all royal matters:
10:234 Նա եւ որ մարզպան աշխարհին լեալ էր յառաջ քան զիմ երթալն, մեծապէս գոհ էր զառնէս զայսմանէ. եւ ես ինձէն իսկ աչաւք իմովք տեսի, զի որպէս հայր հաստատուն համարեալ էր ամենայն աշխարհին, եւ անաչառութեամբ սիրէր զմեծամեծս եւ զփոքունս:	10:234 Similarly, the governor of the country who was there before my arrival was greatly satisfied with him; and I saw myself with my own eyes how he was positively considered as a father to the whole country, and how he loved impartially the greatest and the least:
10:235 Արդ փոխանակ ընդ ձեր՝ ես աղաչեմ զձեզ. խնայեցէք ի պատուական անձինս ձեր, եւ մի՛ մատնիք ի մահ չարչարանաց ըստ առաջնոյն կարգի, զոր տեսէք աչաւք ձերովք:	10:235 It is now my turn to make a request of you: spare your honorable selves and do not surrender to a painful death in the fashion of that earlier one, whom you saw with your own eyes:
10:236 Քանզի թէ ի դոյն միտս յամառութեան կայք, եւ իմ եդեալ է ի մտի իմում բազում չարչարանաւք կարճել զձեզ ի կենաց ձերոց:	10:236 For if you are of the same obstinate mind, I have decided to cut your lives short with many tortures:
10:237 Ես գիտեմ, զի ի հրապոյրս առնդ այդորիկ ելեալ էք դուք. քանզի ինքն ախտացեալ է մարմնով, եւ ձեռնարկութեամբ բժշկաց չ իք գտեալ առողջութիւն. եւ հիւանդոտ կենաւք ձանձրացեալ է, եւ փափագէ ի մահ քան ի կեանս:	10:237 I know that you have been seduced by that man. But as he is sick of body and can find no healing through doctors, he is tired of a sickly life and prefers death to life:
10:238 Առ այս ետ պատասխանի սուրբն Յովսէփ եւ ասէ. «Գովութիւնդ՝ զոր ետուր դու նախ եպիսկոպոսիդ եւ ապա ինձ, յիրաւի՛ արարեր եւ ըստ կարգի պատուեցեր վասն ալեացդ. այդպէս իսկ արժան է:	10:238 To this Saint Yoseph replied, saying: “The praise that you gave first to this bishop and then to me your rightly paid, and you appropriately honored us for these white hairs:
10:239 Այլ ճշմարիտ ծառայից Աստուծոյ ոչ է աւրէն դիմադարձ լինել երկրաւոր իշխանաց, եւ ոչ զոք ի ժողովրդոց տրտունջ առնել վասն մարմնաւոր զաւշաքաղութեան. այլ ցածութեամբ եւ հեզութեամբ ուսուցանել զպատուիրանս Աստուծոյ, եւ առանց խարդախ իմաստութեան խաղաղասէր լինել առ ամենեսեան, եւ անաչառ վարդապետութեամբ առ մի Տէրն արարածոց առաջնորդել բոլորեցունց:	10:239 Such indeed is just. True servants of God must not turn against earthly princes or lodge a complaint against any ordinary man for the sake of sordid material interests. But humbly and modestly they must teach God’s commandments, act peaceably toward all without false wisdom, and with impartial instruction lead everyone to the one Lord of Creation:
10:240 Այլ վասն առնս այսորիկ հրապուրանաց՝ զոր ասացեր, եւ զայդ ոչ ստեցեր, այլ կարի զճշմարիտն ասացեր:	10:240 As for this man’s seduction of which you spoke, you did not lie but said the exact truth:
10:241 Զի ոչ իբրեւ զաւտար ոք հրապուրէ զմեզ, եւ ոչ իբրեւ զպատրող ոք խաբեբայ մոլորեցուցանէ զմեզ, այլ յոյժ սիրէ զմեզ:	10:241 But he does not seduce us like some stranger or lead us astray like some deceiving trickster; rather he loves us greatly:
10:242 Քանզի մի է մայր մեր եկեղեցի՝ որ երկնեացն զմեզ, եւ մի է հայր մեր սուրբ Հոգին՝ որ ծնաւ զմեզ. զիա՞րդ համահարք եւ միոյ մաւր որդիք երկպառակք լինիցին, եւ ոչ միաբանք:	10:242 Since our mother church which bore us is one, and one our father the Holy Spirit who begat us, how could the children of the same father and one mother be at variance and not united:
10:243 Որ քեզ թուին՝ թէ հրապոյրք իցեն, մեր ի տուէ եւ ի գիշերի դոյն խորհուրդ էր՝ զի անքակ ունիցիմք զկենաց միաբանութիւնս:	10:243 What seems to you to be seduction has been our own same thought by day and night—that we might preserve the unity of our lives unbroken:
10:244 Իսկ եթէ սա ձանձրացեալ իցէ ելանել յախտալից մարմնոյս, առաւե՛լ եւս մեք ամենեքեան. զի չ իք ոք ամենեւին ի ծնունդս կանանց, որ ունիցի զմարմին առանց ցաւոց չարչարանաց:	10:244 And if he is tired and anxious to leave this sickly body, even more so are we all. For there is no one at all born of woman who can preserve his body free of tormenting pains:
10:245 Ետ պատասխանի Դենշապուհ եւ ասէ. «Զայդ ոչ գիտէք, ո՜րչափ երկայնամիտ լինիմ ես ի վերայ ձեր. այս ոչ հրամանաւ արքունի է այսչափ երկայնաբան լինել ընդ ձեզ պայքարաւ, այլ յիմմէ քաղցրութենէ թողացուցի ձեզ. զի չ եմ իբրեւ զձեզ անագորոյն, զի անձանց ատելի էք եւ այլոց թշնամիք:	10:245 Denshapuh replied: “You do not realize how patient I am being toward you. It is not at the king’s command that I am continuing this debate with you for so long, but I am tolerating you out of my own kindness. For I am not inhuman like you, who hate yourselves and are enemies to others:
10:246 Իմ զի աղ եւ հաց կերեալ է յաշխարհին ձերում, գութ եւ սէր ունիմ ընդ աշխարհն ձեր:	10:246 Because I have eaten salt and bread in your country, I have compassion and love for your land:
10:247 Ետ պատասխանի Ղեւոնդ երէց եւ ասէ. «Որ առ արտաքինսն գութ եւ սէր ունի, զպատուիրանսն Աստուծոյ կատարէ, այլ պարտի եւ յիւր ոգիսն խնայել. զի չ եմք անձանց տեարք, այլ է, որ համարս խնդրէ ի մէնջ եւ վասն արտաքնոց եւ վասն ներքնոց:	10:247 The priest Ḷevond responded, saying: “Whoever has compassion and love for foreigners is fulfilling God’s commandments. But he must also look to his own soul; for we are not masters of ourselves, but there is someone who will seek accounting from us both for foreigners and for our countrymen:
10:248 Այլ զոր ասացերդ՝ եթէ յինէն անսամ ձեզ եւ ոչ հրամանաւ թագաւորին, եթէ դուք սովոր էք անցանել ըստ հրամանաւ թագաւորին ձերոյ, զայդ բարիոք առնէք, զի աւերիչ աշխարհի է եւ սատակիչ անմեղ մարդկան, բարեկամ սատանայի եւ թշնամի Աստուծոյ:	10:248 Now as for your saying that I am listening to you of my own accord and not at the king’s orders—if you are accustomed to transgress your king’s commands, you do well, for he is a ravager of the land and a slayer of innocent people, a friend of Satan and an enemy of God:
10:249 Այլ մեք ոչ կարեմք անցանել զհրամանաւ մերոյ թագաւորին, եւ ոչ զանանց կեանսն մեր կարեմք փոխանակել ընդ ապականացու պատրանս աշխարհիս:	10:249 But we cannot transgress the command of our King, nor are we able to exchange our eternal life for the corruptible illusions of this world:
10:250 Այլ վասն իմ զի ասացեր՝ չ գտեալ զառողջութիւն ի բժշկաց, սիրէ զմահ քան զկեանս, այդ բանք ոչ այնոցիկ են, որ տեսանեն զամենայն չարչարանս աշխարհիս:	10:250 But as for your saying of me that he has not found healing from doctors and prefers death to life—these are not the words of those who see all the pains of the world:
