6:0 Եւ ի բաժանելն զթագաւորութիւն Արշակունւոյն յերկուս, առ ի հնազանդեցուցանել զկողմն արեւմտից աշխարհիս Հայոց` թագաւորին Յունաց ընդ իշխանութեամբ իւրոյ տէրութեանն, եւ զկողմն արեւելից խոնարհեցուցանելով դառն եւ բռնաւոր ծառայութեամբ` արքային Պարսից` երթեալ այնուհետեւ նախարարքն Հայոց ի վիճակէ մասին արքային Պարսից` խնդրէին իւրեանց թագաւոր ըստ բնիկ նախնի կարգին յազգէն Արշակունեաց:

6:0 After the division of the (Armenian) Arsacid kingdom into two parts—the western part of the land of Armenia was subject to the emperor of Byzantium and under his authority, while the eastern part had been humbled by the bitter and tyrannical service tendered to the king of Iran—the Armenian naxarars who were in the Iranian king’s sector, went and requested (that they be given) their own king, selected, according to the rule of their native ancestors, from the Arsacid line:

6:1 Եւ արքային Պարսից Շապհոյ կատարեալ զհայցուածս նոցա` շնորհէր նոցա թագաւոր Խոսրով անուն յազգէն Արշակունեաց:

6:1 Shahpuhr [III, 383-88] king of Iran, fulfilled their requests and bestowed upon them as king (a member) of the Arsacid line named Xosrov:

6:2 Քանզի նախգոյն թագաւորն Հայոց Արշակ ունէր միահեծան զթագաւորութիւնն ի վերայ ամենայն աշխարհիս Հայոց:

6:2 The previous king of Armenia, Arshak, had ruled absolutely over the entire land of Armenia:

6:3 Իբրեւ ետես, թէ խախտեալ քայքայեալ մատնեցաւ ի բաժանումն մեծ իշխանութիւն թագաւորութեան ազգին իւրեանց` մեծաւ տրտմութեամբ խռովեալ տարակուսէր յանձն իւր. տեսանէր նախ զանկանելն ընդ լծով ծառայութեան երկուց թագաւորաց զաշխարհս Հայոց. եւ դարձեալ` զմեծ մասն, զլաւն եւ զպիտանին եւ զարգաւանդն աշխարհիս Հայոց ունել ի բաժին արքային Պարսից:

6:3 When he saw that the great authority of his line’s kingdom had been shaken, demolished, and pulled apart, in great sadness he had uneasy doubts with himself. First, he observed that the land of Armenia had fallen under the burden of serving two kings. Then he noted that the greater part of Armenia’s best, most useful and fertile lands was in the Iranian king’s sector:

6:4 քանզի թէպէտ եւ հասեալ բազում գաւառք այլ ի ժառանգութիւն մասին թագաւորին Յունաց` սակայն համեմատէին այն միայն Այրարատեան գաւառին:

6:4 Despite the fact that the emperor of Byzantium had inherited many other districts, (those lands, taken together) could be compared only to the (Iranian-held) district of Ayrarat:

6:5 Խորհուրդ բազմածուփ հանդերձ իւրովք սիրելեաւք ի մէջ առեալ թագաւորն Արշակ` մտայոյզ լինէր ի սիրտ իւր ասելով. «Թէպէտ երբէք մինչեւ ցայժմ կամ հակառակութեամբ կամ սիրով եղեալք մեք ընդ միմեանս` զգացուցեալ էր մեր նոցա գործով պատերազմի, որպէս եւ պարտ էր ճանաչել առն զփորձ միւսոյ եւս լաւագունի քան զինքն. եւ թէ խոնարհեալ դիպէաք ի սէր առ միմեանս` սակայն եղբայր լինէաք հաշուեալ նոցա, պատուով եւ գահակցութեամբ ըստ կրսերագոյն մասին, եւ ոչ բնաւ անկեալք ի բաժին` զանուն ծառայութեան ստացեալ կրէաք յանձինս:

6:5 After much stormy consultations with his loved ones, the distraught king Arshak said to himself: “To the present there has been neither conflict nor affection between us but now they threaten us with war and a man must recognize the experience of someone better than himself. But should we bow and incline toward affection for each other, then they will regard us as brothers, giving less honor and less senority; not all (the lands) will be our share, and we shall bear the name of servitude:

6:6 Իսկ այժմ, յաղագս ցասուցանելոյ մեր եւ մերոց առաջնոցն զերկայնամիտ եւ զքաղցր Աստուած` մատնեալ անկաք ի ստրկութիւն, եւ խոնարհեալք յանարգութիւն` անողորմութեամբ գտեալք ի բաժանումն. այլ եւ զգեղեցիկ տեղիս հանգստի մերոյ եւ բնակութեան տեսաք ժառանգեալ ամբարհաւաճ եւ անաստուած ազգին Պարսկաց:

6:6 Indeed now, because we and our ancestors have enraged tolerant and mild God, we have been betrayed into slavery, and are bowed in dishonor, and are inconsolable at the division. We watched the haughty godless Iranian people inherit the beautiful site of our rest and habitation:

6:7 Վասն որոյ ընտրելագոյն լիցի ինձ թողուլ զանձկալի եւ զամենատենչ վայրս երկրիս Այրարատոյ, զբնիկ եւ զսեպհական տեղիս նախնեաց իմոց, եւ գնալ զկնի աղքատութեան եւ կեալ բաղձալի կարաւտանաւք` քան թէ սիրել զկենցաղս աշխարհիս, զոր իբրեւ թողլոց եմք ակամայ. եւ ընտրել զբնակութիւն մասին այսորիկ` քան բնակել անարգանաւք ի մէջ անաւրինաց եւ կեալ միշտ ցաւաւք մտաց զյերկար եւ կամ զկարճ կեանս անյայտ կենցաղոյս, եւ վախճանել անարգութեամբ, ըստ որում ոչ արժանի թագաւորական պատուոյ եւ շքեղութեան:

6:7 Consequently, I prefer to quit the desirable and coveted places of the Ayrarat country, to leave the native and sephakan place of my ancestors, and go into poverty and live with strong longings, rather than appreciate the way of life in a land where it is as if I am unwillingly tolerated. I prefer to live in the other sector than to dwell among infidels in disgrace and always with mental anguish through the unknown turns of my life—be it long or short—and to die in dishonor, which does not befit the royal dignity and majesty:
