 40:0 Varaztirots’ is appointed marzpan of Armenia. K’ristop ’or is installed on the throne of the Catholicosate, and after him Ezr. Death of Kawat; reign of the young Artashir. Khoṙeam, at the request and with the help of Heraclius, takes Ctesiphon, kills Artashir, and rules himself He returns the Lord’s Cross to the Greeks. Murder of Khoṙeam; reign of Bor, Khosrov’s sister, of Azarmidukht, and of Ormizd for short periods, and then of Yazkert, Kawat’s son. Fragmentation of the Persian empire:

40:1 Յայնժամ կոչէ արքայ Կաւատ զՎարազտիրոց զորդի Սմբատայ Բագրատունւոյ Խոսրով Շում կոչեցելոյ, եւ տայ նմա զիշխանութիւն տանուտէրութեանն. առնէ զնա մարզպան եւ արձակէ ի Հայս հանդերձ ամենայն ընչիւք հայրենի, զի զաշխարհն ի շինութեան պահեսցէ: Եւ իբրեւ եկն նա ի Հայս՝ խնդութեամբ ընկալան զնա ամենայն աշխարհն Հայաստանեայց:

 40:1 Then king Kawat summoned Varaztirots’, son of Smbat Bagratuni called Khosrov Shum, and gave him the office of tanutēr. He made him marzpan, and sent him to Armenia with (authority over) all his ancestral possessions in order to keep the country in prosperity. When he came to Armenia, all the land of the Armenians joyfully received him:

40:2 Բայց զի մեռեալ էր երանելին Կոմիտաս կաթողիկոսն եւ կայր տեղին անհրամանատար՝ խորհուրդ առնէր ընդ ամենեցուն տեսանել զոմն արժանաւոր: Յայնժամ առաջադրութեամբ Թէոդորոսի Ռշտունեաց տեառն ընտրեցին զոմն անապատական՝ յԱբրահամեան տանէ, որում անուն էր Քրիստափոր: Զնա նստուցին կաթողիկոս, եւ նա դիպաւ այր հպարտ եւ ամբարտաւան, որոյ լեզու իւր էր իբրեւ զսուր սուսեր:

 40:2 But because the blessed Catholicos Komitas had died and that position was vacant, he took counsel with them all to find someone worthy. Then, under the leadership of T’ēodoros lord of the Ṙshtunik’, they chose a certain hermit, from the house of Abraham, whose name was K’ristop’or. They installed him as Catholicos, but he turned out to be a proud and haughty man whose tongue was like a sharp sword:

40:3 Սա բազում խռովութիւն յուզեաց եւ արկ սուր ի մէջ ընդ ասպետ եւ ընդ եղբայր իւր չարախաւսութեամբ: Կալաւ սա զաթոռ հայրապետութեան ամս [Բ] եւ յամին երրորդի եդին ի վերայ նորա բամբասանս: Եւ ժողովեալ զամենայն եպիսկոպոսունս եւ իշխանս արարին քննութիւն: Եւ եկեալ արք երկու ի նորին ընտանեաց եւ վկայեցին զնմանէ առաջի ամենայն բազմութեանն:

 40:3 He stirred up much trouble and created strife between the aspet and his brother by his slander. He held the throne of the patriarchate for two years; and in the third-year complaints were laid against him. They assembled all the bishops and princes and held an enquiry. Two men came from his own family and testified about him before the whole multitude:

40:4 Ապա արձակեալ զոմանս յեպիսկոպոսաց անտի՝ եւ առին ի նմանէ զփակեղն պատուոյ քահանայապետութեան, եւ ընկեցին զնա ի կարգէն եւ հալածեցին զնա անարգանաւք: Եւ անդէն փութանակի նստուցին կաթուղիկոս զԵզր ի Նիգ գաւառէ, որ էր առ երանելւոյն Կումիտասաւ կարգեալ փակակալ սրբոյն Գրիգորի. եւ սա էր այր խոնարհ եւ հեզ, որ ոչ կամէր զոք ցասուցանել, եւ ոչ ելանէր ի բերանոյ նորա բան տգեղ:

 40:4 Then they sent some of the bishops and removed from him the hood of the high-priestly rank, dismissed him from his position, and expelled him in dishonour. Then they promptly installed as Catholicos Ezr from the province of Nig, who in the time of the blessed Komitas had been custodian of (the church of) St Gregory. He was a humble and gentle man, who did not wish to provoke anyone to anger; and no indecorous word came from his mouth:

40:5 Եւ արդ՝ մինչդեռ խորհէր Կաւատ արքայ շինութեան աշխարհի, եւ կամէր ընդ ամենայն կողմանս խաղաղութիւն առնել, կեցեալ ամիսս վեց՝ վախճանեցաւ: Եւ նստուցին թագաւոր զԱրտաշիր զորդի նորա. եւ նա էր մանուկ տղայ:

 40:5 Now while king Kawat was planning for the prosperity of the country and wishing to make peace throughout all regions, having lived for six months he died. They installed as king his son Artashir; he was a young boy:

40:6 Յայնժամ Երակղոս գրէ առ Խոռեամ այսպէս. «Կաւատ թագաւոր ձեր վախճանեցաւ, եւ քեզ հասեալ է թագաւորութեանն այն աթոռ. եւ ես քեզ տամ զնա, եւ զաւակի քո յետ քո: Եւ եթէ զաւր պիտոյ է՝ արձակեցից յաւգնականութիւն որչափ եւ պիտոյ իցէ քեզ, եւ ուխտ դիցուք ի մէջ իմ եւ ի մէջ քո հանդերձ երդմամբ, գրով եւ կնքով»: Յայնժամ դիւրաւ հաւանեալ Խոռեմայ՝ թողու ի բաց զԱղեքսանդրիա, եւ առեալ զամենայն զաւրս իւր եւ ի մի վայր գումարեաց, եւ թողեալ զնոսա, եւ ինքն սակաւուք գնաց ի ժամադիր տեղին, ուր ասացեալ էր նմա Երակլի:

 40:6 Then Heraclius wrote to Khoṙeam as follows: ’Your king Kawat has died, and the throne of the kingdom has come to you. I bestow it on you, and on your offspring after you. If an army is necessary, I shall send to your assistance as many (troops) as you may need. Let us make a pact between me and you with an oath, in writing and with a seal. ’ Then Khoṙeam was easily persuaded, and he abandoned Alexandria. Taking all his troops he gathered them in one place. Then he left them and went in person with a few (soldiers) to the appointed place which Heraclius had proposed to him:

40:7 Եւ տեսեալ զմիմեանս ուրախ լինէին մեծապէս: Յայնժամ երդուաւ նմա Երակլոս՝ տալ զթագաւորութիւնն զայն, եւ խոստանայ նոյնպէս որդւոց նորա յետ նորա, եւ զաւր որչափ եւ պիտոյ իցէ: Եւ խնդրէր առաջին խնդիր ի նմանէ՝ զխաչն կենսաբեր, զոր գերեաց նա յԵրուսաղէմէ:

 40:7 On seeing each other they greatly rejoiced. Then Heraclius swore to him that he would give him that kingdom, and promised it likewise to his sons after him, and as large a force as might be necessary. He made as his prime request from him the Life-bearing Cross which he had taken into captivity from Jerusalem:

40:8 Յայնժամ երդուաւ նմա Խոռեամ եւ ասէ. «Յորժամ հասից ի դուռն արքունի՝ նոյն ժամայն խնդիր արարից խաչին եւ տաց բերել առ քեզ: Այլ եւ պայման սահման եդից՝ ցոր վայր եւ դու կամիցիս. արա վասն նորա հաստատութիւն գրով եւ կնքով եւ աղիւ»: Եւ խնդրեաց ի նմանէ զաւր սակաւ, եւ մեկնեցան գնացին ի միմեանց:

 40:8 Then Khoṙeam swore to him, saying: ’When I reach the royal court, I shall immediately make a search for the Cross and shall have it brought to you. I shall also make an agreement on the border, to where you may wish it. So, make confirmation of this in writing, with a seal and with salt. ’ And he requested a small force from him. Then they took leave of each other:

40:9 Իսկ Խոռեմայ առեալ զբազմութիւն զաւրաց իւրոց՝ գնաց ի Տիզբոն, եւ հրաման տուեալ ոմանց՝ սպանին զտղայ թագաւորն զԱրտաշիր, եւ ինքն երթեալ նստաւ յաթոռ թագաւորութեանն. եւ զամենայն արս գլխաւորս, որ ի դրանն կամ որ ի զաւրուն, յորում ոչ կարէր վստահանալ՝ հրաման ետ սրով սատակել զնոսա, եւ զայլս կապանաւք ետ տանել առ Երակլոս:

 40:9 Then Khoṙeam, taking the host of his army, went to Ctesiphon. He ordered some people to kill the young king Artashir, and he himself sat on the royal throne. All the principal men at court or in the army in whom he could place no trust he commanded to be put to the sword, and others he had taken in bonds to Heraclius:

40:10 Յայնժամ արձակեաց երանելին Երակլոս արս հաւատարիմս առ Խոռեամ վասն տէրունեան խաչին: Եւ նորա խնդիր արարեալ մեծաւ ստիպով՝ հազիւ հազ ետ ցարսն, որ եկեալ էին: Եւ նոքա առեալ գնացին փութանակի: Եւ ետ նոցա ինչս ոչ սակաւս. եւ մեծաւ ուրախութեամբ արձակեաց զնոսա պատուով:

 40:10 Then the blessed Heraclius sent reliable men to Khoṙeam for the Lord’s Cross. Having searched with great diligence, finally he gave it to the men who had come. They took it and promptly departed. He also gave them no few presents, and with great joy he sent them off with honour:

40:11 Իսկ Խոռեամ յաւուր միում զգեցեալ էր հանդերձ թագաւորական եւ նստեալ ի վերայ երիվարի շրջէր ի մէջ զաւրուն ցուցանել զինքն. յանկարծակի ի թիկանց կուսէ յարձակեցան ի վերայ նորա, հարին զնա եւ սատակեցին: Եւ թագաւորեցուցին զԲորն, դուստր Խոսրովայ, որ էր կին նորին, եւ կարգեցին հրամանատար ի դրանն զԽոռոխ Որմիզդ, որ էր իշխան կողմանց Ատրպատականի:

 40:11 Now one day Khoṙeam put on a royal robe, and seated on a horse he was making a tour of the army to show himself Suddenly they attacked him from behind, struck him down and killed him. They installed as queen Bor, Khosrov’s daughter, who was his wife; and they appointed as chief minister at court Khoṙokh Ormizd, who was prince of the region of Atrpatakan:

40:12 Արդ՝ Խոռոխն այն յղէ առ բամբիշն, ասէ. «Լեր ինձ կին». եւ նորա յանձին կալեալ ասէ. «Եկ միով արամբ հասարակ գիշերի, եւ ես արարից զկամս քո: Եւ յարուցեալ հասարակ գիշերի միով մանկամբ գնաց. եւ իբրեւ եմուտ ի տաճարն արքունի՝ յարեան ի վերայ նորա պահապանք դրանն եւ հարեալ սպանին զնա: Եւ կալաւ բամբիշն զթագաւորութիւն ամս [Բ] եւ մեռաւ:

 40:12 Then this Khoṙokh sent (a message) to the queen: ’Become my wife. ’ She agreed, saying: ’Come with a single man at midnight, and I shall fulfil your wish. ’ Arising at midnight, he went with a single aide. But when he entered the royal palace, the guards of the court fell on him, struck him down and killed him. The queen held the throne for two years and died:

40:13 Յետ նորա Խոսրով ոմն յազգէ Սասանայ: Եւ յետ Խոսրովայ՝ Ազարմիդուխտ դուստր Խոսրովայ: Եւ յետ սորա Որմիզդ, թոռն Խոսրովայ, զոր խեղդամահ արարին զաւրն Խոռեմայ: Եւ ապա թագաւորէ Յազկերտ որդի Կաւատայ, թոռն Խոսրովայ, որ ունէր զթագաւորութիւնն երկեւղիւ, զի պատառեալ բաժանեցան զաւրք աշխարհին Պարսից՝ յերիս մասունս:

 40:13 After her (reigned) a certain Khosrov from the family of Sasan; and after Khosrov, Azarmidukht, Khosrov’s daughter; and after her, Ormizd, grandson of Khosrov, whom Khoṙeam’s army strangled. Then reigned Yazkert, son of Kawat, grandson of Khosrov, who kept the kingdom in fear (of himself:

40:14 Զաւր մի այն՝ որ ի Պարսից եւ ի յարեւելից կողմանէ, եւ զաւր մի Խոռեմայ՝ որ յԱսորեստանեայց կողմանէ, եւ զաւր մի՝ որ յԱտրպատական կողմանէ: Բայց թագաւորութիւն նորա էր ի Տիզբոն, եւ ամենեքին միաբան պատուէին զնա միաբանութեամբ: Ամէն:

 40:14 For the army of the Persian empire had been divided into three parts: one force in Persia and the east; one force was Khoṙeam’s in the area of Asorestan; and one force in Atrpatakan. But his rule was in Ctesiphon, and all honoured him in unison. Amen:
