32:0 Յաղագս սասանման Դվին քաղաքի, եւ գրելոյ Մաշտոց վարդապետի առ քաղաքացիս գիր մխիթարութեան:

 32:0 The Destruction of the City of Dvin and Mashtoc’ Vardapet’s Letter of Consolation to the People of the City:

32:1 Զայսու ժամանակաւ ահագին իմն յեղակարծումն ժամու սաստիկ շարժմանց եղելոց ի գիշերի ի Դվին քաղաքի՝ բազում սասանումն եւ սարսափումն եւ դղրդումն եւ կործանումն զբնակչօք քաղաքին զեղեալ, հիմն ի վեր տապալէր: Վասն զի առ հասարակ ի վայր փլուզեալ զպատուար պարսպացն եւ զապարանս գլխաւորացն եւ զտունս ռամկաց՝ իբրեւ զերիզուտ վայրս առապարաց յական թօթափել տեսանէր:

 32:1 Unexpectedly, about this time during the course of the night severe tremors occured in the city of Dvin and caused extensive destruction, terror, ruin and loss of life to the inhabitants of the city; for the earthquake pulled down all the walls of the city, as both the palaces of the magnates and the houses of the common people (ramik) became in the twinkling of an eye like desolated tract of rocks:

32:2 այլ եւ զաստուածաշէն եկեղեցիս կաթողիկոսարանին եւ զայլ եւս հաստահեղոյս վկայարանս՝ դղրդեալ քանդեալ աւերեալ ի վայր հոսէր. որ գրեթէ իբրեւ զփապարս վիմուտս դերբկաց սարսափելի տեսողացն երեւէր:

 32:2 It also demolished and destroyed the Divinely-built church of the katholikosate as well as the other martyria with solid foundations, which appeared to the onlookers almost like holes full of rocks:

32:3 Այլ եւ հեղձամղձուկ յարկածածուկ հողաթաւալ, հողահեղձոյց սատակումն դիակոյտ բազմութեանն, որ կարծրագոյն քարեղէն եւ անկարեկիր միտս էր ստացեալ՝ յարդարէր զնա ի բազում ողբ եւ յարտօսրաթոր կականմունս:

 32:3 The destruction of multitudes of men, who had suffocated under their roofs and mounds of earth because their minds had become as hard as rock and without compassion, made them resort to lamentations and tearful cries:

32:4 Թողում ասել զազգակիցս եւ զկարեկիցս եւ զլծակից հարազատութիւն մարդկան, որոց կականումն եւ ողբումն եւ աշխարումն գուժից ճչոյ եւ կանչոյ եւ կառանչոյ, եւ աղիողորմ ձայնք երգեցիկ կուսանաց եւ սեւազգեաց կանանց, եւ արանց վշտահար հեծութեամբ սգացելոց՝ մինչեւ յերկինս բարձրացեալ հասանէր:

 32:4 I shall not speak of the victims’ relatives, sympathizers and spouses, whose cries and lamentations, as well as the piteous voices of the chorus of minstrels, accompanied by the wails of black-clad women and griefstricken men reached up to the heavens:

32:5 Իսկ զբազմութիւնսն դիականցն ոչ բաւեալ տալ գերեզմանաց՝ զբազումս ի վիհս եւ ի խորափիտս եւ ի դարափլակս ընկեցեալ ծածկէին:

 32:5 As it was not possible to bury the multitude of corpses in graves, many were thrown into abysses, ravines and gorges:

32:6 Եւ այսպէս ահ բարկութեանն ահափետ զամենեսեան առնէր՝ պաշարմամբ զգածեալ զմնացեալսն:

 32:6 Thus fear of the (divine) wrath terrified those who had survived:

32:7 Զայսպիսի լուեալ զաստուածասաստ բարկութիւնն սրբոյ առնն Աստուծոյ Մաշտոցի, որ բնակեալն էր ի Սեւան կղզւոջ բազմահանդէս ճգնութեամբ՝ գրեալ թուղթ առ գանեալսն մնացական օրինակ զայս:

 32:7 Hearing of the divine scourge, the blessed man of God Mashtoc’, who dwelled on the island of Sewan in an exemplary manner of ascetic life, wrote as follows a letter to the afflicted who had survived:

32:8 Զհամաշխարհականդ խորտակումն, զոր բուռն զօրութեամբ մանրեալ ճմլեաց աստուածային հնձանահար ի բարկութեան մեղաց մերոց բազմացելոյ՝ գիտացի, հաւատացեալ եւ սիրուն տեա՛րք իմ եւ սիրելի եղբարք, զյանկարծակի հասեալդ ի վերայ զհնձանահարութիւն դառն արտասուաց եւ զօրհաս անտանելի տուգանաց մահու, որ դարձոյց յողբ զխնդութիւն ձեր:

 32:8 My gracious and beloved lords and dear brethren, I learned of the universal destruction, wherein the divine treader of the winepress crushed you with immense force in anger for our multiplying sins. I was also informed of the sudden affliction of bitter tears and unbearable agonies of death that came upon you, and turned your joy into mourning:

32:9 Վասն զի հուր եկեր միանգամայն եւ փշրեաց զմայրս մարդկեղէն անտառաց. եւ ահա լայնութիւն ծովու եւ բարձրութիւնք լերանց ոչ բաւեցին արգելուլ զարագաթեւ հրամանն:

 32:9 Fire devoured everything and scattered the multitudes. Behold! Neither the expanse of the main, nor the summits of mountains could stop the swift-winged order:

32:10 Աւա՛ղ դառն լուսոյ աւուրն կործանման, որ մինչդեռ ի սեղանս վայելչութեան իւրեանց կերակուրք ի բերանս էին՝ բերանսեցան ի բարկ բախման անչափ աղէտիցն:

 32:10 Woe to that horrible day of destruction, when still seated at their splendid dining tables with food in their mouths, they were stupefied by the violent blow of boundless disaster:

32:11 Վասն զի լքին ծնօղք զծնունդս իւրեանց եւ տղայք աղէտիւք հրաժարեցան ի ծնողաց: Գերեզմանք նոցա տունք նոցա եղեն, եւ ի յարկս իւրեանց իբրեւ ի դամբանի թաղեցան:

 32:11 Parents abandoned their children and children left their parents with pain. Their homes became their graves, and they were buried in their own dwellings as in a tomb:

32:12 Աւա՛ղ ի վերայ չարչարեցելոցդ եւ հնձեցելոցդ առ հասարակ հարցդ եւ եղբարցդ. զի թակարդափակեաց Տէր զբազմութիւն ազգաց ժողովրդեան իւրոյ անեւերոյթ սուսերաւ՝ ի միում վայրկենի ժամու վանեալ եւ իբրեւ զջուր հեղեալ ցամաքեցոյց, կամ իբրեւ զծուխ սպառեաց եւ աչախիլ խաւարաւ զամենեսեան զմեզ ծածկեաց:

 32:12 Woe to you, fathers and brothers who suffered toils and oppression! The Lord spread His nets upon His people and with invisible swords struck them in one second. He dried them up like water and made them vanish like smoke, covering us all with blinding darkness:

32:13 Երանի՛ աչաց, որք ոչ տեսին զնոր եւ զանլուր դատապարտութիւնն, զոր ընկալաք եւ հատուցաւ մեզ. զի որ երբեմն ի միասին սիրալիր խնդութեամբ խրախամտեալք բերկրէիք՝ ծնողօք եւ եղբարբք եւ զարմիւք եւ զաւակօք հնչեցուցեալ Տեառն զբարբառս օրհնութեան, այժմ անտանելի տարակուսանօք յանկարծահաս խաւարազգած մթութեամբք տոչորեալ՝ եւ ստուեր անգամ ոչ թողաւ մխիթարութեան եւ ոչ յոյս ինչ ելից զձեզ փոխանորդութեան եւ լուծման ըստ կենացս, բայց միայն Աստուծոյ եւեթ մարդասիրութիւնն՝ ըստ որում եւ գիտէք իսկ:

 32:13 Blessed are the eyes that did not behold this new and unheard of condemnation which we received in retribution. For there was a time when being of good cheer in the gladness of your hearts, you rejoiced together with your parents, brothers, families and children, and made the Lord hear the sounds of blessing. Now, you are fired by unbearable perplexities and the sudden advent of blinding darkness. Even the shadow of consolation is not to be found, and you are left with no hope or alternative other than to cease to live or turn alone to God’s love of mankind:

32:14 Զի ոչինչ կայ հոգ Աստուծոյ՝ քան թէ միայն զմարդկան ուղղութիւն եւ փրկութիւն. վասն զի մեք մոռանամք զԱստուած, եւ զմեզ ինքն: Այսպէս ապա ընդոստուցեալ զարթուցանէ ըստ իւրում ողորմութեանն եւ մարդասիրութեանն:

 32:14 For you know, that God has no other care than setting straight and redeeming mankind. Because we are wont to forget God and He in turn forgets us, He stirs us up in this manner in accordance with His mercy and love:

32:15 քանզի այսպէս հաւանիմ զտանջելն Աստուծոյ, զոր ասեն Գիրք, որով խրատէ զչարացեալ անզգամութիւնս մեր:

 32:15 For I agree with the Scriptures in regard to the scourge of God, whereby “He admonishes by the sword our wickedness and folly:

32:16 Դարձեալ՝ մի՛ զարմանայք վասն անքննելի նորայն դատաստանաց, թէ զիա՞րդ կորուսանիցէ զարդարն ընդ ամբարշտին:

 32:16 Again, do not wonder at the unfathomable judgments, whereby he destroys the upright with the impious:

32:17 Նախ եւ առաջին՝ զի ոչ ոք է արդար եւ ոչ մի, վասն զի ամենեքեան խոտորեցաք ի միասին եւ անպիտանացաք. ապա չէ ինչ կարի չար, եթէ մահն՝ որում պարտապան եմք, այն մեզ վրիժաբար հասանիցէ:

 32:17 First, no one is upright, because we have all gone astray and have become unprofitable. Consequently, (you should not consider) it tragic, if death, to which we are bound, comes to us in retribution:

32:18 Յետ այնորիկ ապա որպէս զարեւն եւ զանձրեւն եւ զամենայն բարութիւնս ի միասին վայելեն արդարք եւ մեղաւորք, այսպէս եւ զբաժակ պատուհասին ի միասին ըմպեն. իսկ իւրաքանչիւրոց պատիւն եւ պատուհասն առ հանդերձեալ օրն պահի:

 32:18 Secondly, even as the upright as well as the impious benefit together from the sun, rain, and other goodly things, so also they drink together from the cup of destruction. But the reward and retribution of each individually will be deferred to the day of the Last Judgment:

32:19 Արդ՝ վասն զի այսպէս մինչեւ ցմեզ հաստատեալ են իրաւունք Արարչին՝ անաչառ վարելով առ ամենեսեան, ընկալարուք զակամայսդ որպէս կամաւոր. որով յայտնի լիցի իմաստութեան եւ գիտութեան եւ հաւատոց ձերոց հանդէս:

 32:19 Now, as the decrees that the Creator has set up apply also to us, and treat everyone impartially, accept willingly that which is contrary to your wishes, so that you may show proof of your wisdom, knowledge and faith:

32:20 Եւ զպարտական գոհաբանութիւնդ ձեր մատուսջիք նմա, որ մխիթարիչն է վհատութեան սրտից. որով եւ բնականդ իսկ էք նորա ընտանութեամբ ըստ քրիստոսական հաւատոցն եւ ուղիղ վարուց եւ առաքինասէր եւ ուղղափառ կարգաւ յերկիւղ Տեառն հաստատեալք:

 32:20 Express to Him the gratitude that you owe Him, the One who consoles your hearts’ despair, because you are bound to him by oath in accordance with your Christian faith and upright life, and are confident in the fear of the Lord through virtuous and orthodox practice:

32:21 Եւ նա տացէ ձեզ հոգի մխիթարութեան եւ յոյս բարեաց ի սիրտ սուրբ. եւ բնական սփոփանօք լցուսցէ զձեզ զմնացեալսդ ամենայն՝ զհօտ եւ զհովիւ, մոռացումն առնելով ծանր եւ մեծ վշտացդ: Եւ ըստ չարչարանաց ելից նոցա ի հովտէս տրտմութեան՝ հաւասար չարչարելոց վկայիցն Քրիստոսի հաշտեսցի, հանգուցեալ զհոգիս նոցա ի յարկսն լուսոյ, եղծանելով զգիր պարտեաց նոցա զբանից եւ զգործոց եւ զմտածութեանց, եւ դասաւորելով ի խոստացեալ բարիսն, որ պահի սիրողաց իւրոց որ յաւիտենից:

 32:21 He shall console your spirits and make you hopeful for a pure heart; He shall give natural relief to all of you that have survived, that is to say, both pastor and flock, and make you forget the great and profound grief. In return for the tribulations suffered by those who departed from this valley of grief, let an atonement be made for them as equals of the martyrs tortured for Christ. May He grant repose to their souls in the dwelling of light, and blotting out the record of their words, deeds, and thoughts let Him place them in the promised bliss, which is preserved for His beloved for the ages and ages:

32:22 Զայս բան բարեզգեաց ընթերցեալ առաջի բազմաց եւ լուեալ յունկանէ մնացելոց ժողովրդոցն յահէ սաստից Տեառն՝ ոչ սակաւ մխիթարութիւն յանձինս իւրեանց դնէին:

 32:22 This gracious letter was read in the presence of a great multitude, and the rest of the people having heard of it through hearsay consoled themselves greatly from fear of the Lord’s rebuke:

32:23 այլ եւ արժանի այնմիկ չար ամպրոպի զինքեանս վարկեալս արժանիս ընդ անօրէնս խառն ի նոսայն մեղաց՝ առ միմեանս ասելով. «Յիրաւի թէ եւ քրիստոնեայք եւս ի ծուխ բարկութեան հեթանոսաց թմրեալ պատժապարտ գտան:

 32:23 However, they considered themselves as worthy of that evil calamity as the infidels whose sins they shared, and spoke to one another thus: “It was just that Christians confounded in the smoke of the wrath of the heathen were found guilty:

32:24 վասն զի ոչ ելեալք ի Սեգովրայ խառնակեցաք ընդ Հագարացիսն եւ ուսաք զգործս նոցա, որ գտաւ իսկ ի գայթակղութիւն մեզ:

 32:24 because we did not come out of Segor and mingled with the Hagarites, from whom we learned their ways which proved for us a stumbling-block:

32:25 Այլ արդ՝ այս սակս եղկելի տարակուսական աղետիցս քեզ բաւականացեալ, զի մի՛ առաւելն քան զայս պատերազմող լսելեաց անցցէ. այլ մեք զառաջակայսն տեսցուք:

 32:25 But now, let this much information concerning these miserable and indefensive calamities suffice you, lest further details might be annoying to your ears and let us look at subsequent events:
