12:1 Եւ յետ այսորիկ հրաման ետ Տրդատ արքայ՝ հրովարտակ առնել ընդ ամենայն աշխարհս իշխանութեան իւրոյ, հրաման հանեալ աւրինակ զայս:

 12:1 After this, King Trdat ordered that an edict should be promulgated throughout all the lands of his realm. It had this import:

12:2 Տրդատ արքայ Հայոց մեծաց, առ մեծամեծս եւ առ իշխանս եւ առ նախարարս եւ առ գործակալս եւ առ այլ մարդիկդ, որ ընդ իմով իշխանութեամբ էք, յաւանս, ի շէնս, ի գեաւղս, յագարակս, առ ազատս եւ առ շինականս, միանգամայն իսկ առ ամենեսեան, ողջոյն:

 12:2 Trdat, king of Greater Armenia, sends greetings to everyone - to the grandees, princes, [naxarars] lords, officials, and others under my authority and to those who are located in hamlets, shens, cultivated areas, villages, and farms [agaraks], to the [azats] gentry and [shinakans] peasantry:

12:3 Ողջոյն հասեալ եւ շինութիւն դիցն աւգնականութեամբ, լիութիւն պարարտութեան յարոյն Արամազդայ, խնամակալութիւն յԱնահիտ տիկնոջէ, եւ քաջութիւն հասցէ ձեզ ի քաջէն Վահագնէ ամենայն Հայոց աշխարհիս. իմաստութիւն Յունաց հասցէ դաստակերտիդ կայսերաց, եւ ի մեր դիւցախառն Պարթեւաց հասցէ այցելութիւն, ի փառաց թագաւորաց եւ ի քաջ նախնեաց:

 12:3 By the aid of the gods, may greeting and prosperity come to you and to the entire land of the Armenians, full fertility from manly Aramazd, protection from the lady Anahit, bravery from the brave Vahagn. May the wisdom of the Greeks reach to the estates [dastakert] of the Caesars (?), may we receive protection from our demigod Parthians, and from the glory of our kings and brave ancestors:

12:4 Ամենայն ոք գիտասցէ ի մերոց հրամանացս որ առ ձեզ, զի վասն ձեր շինութեան եմք հոգացեալք. զի յորժամ էաք մեք ի Յունաց աշխարհին՝ անդ տեսանէաք զհոգաբարձութիւն թագաւորացն, ի հոգալ ընդ շինութիւն իւրեանց աշխարհին, ի պատուել զբագինս դիցն աստուածոց շինուածովք եւ սպանդիւք զոհիցն, եւ երեւելի պատարագացն ընծայիւք, եւ գունակ գունակ նուիրաւքն:

 12:4 Let everyone know from the orders we have sent to you, that we are concerned for your prosperity. For when we were in the land of the Greeks (Byzantines), we observed the concern of the kings to care about the prosperity of their land, to honor the altars of the gods with buildings and sacrifices of victims, and noteworthy gifts of offerings, and differing sorts of gifts and presents:

12:5 եւ ի պտղոցն՝ յամենայնէ զամենայն նոցա մատուցանելով, եւ ջերմեռանդն եռալ զեռալ պաշտամանն, շքեղացուցանելով եւ զարդուքն զարդարելով եւ զերեւելի զհոյակապ զանեղծ դիսն մեծարելով:

 12:5 and with the choicest of fruits offered to them. We observed also the zeal of their worship, how they worshipped and exalted the noteworthy, magnificent, and uncreated gods with wealth and adornments:

12:6 Եւ զայն եւս տեսանէաք ի նոցանէ՝ ի նոցունց դից անտի՝ զխաղաղասէր շինութիւն մարդաշատութեան, հոծ բազմամբոխ լիութեամբ պարարտութեամբ՝ նոցա զայն փոխադարձ փոխարինացն շինութիւն շնորհեալ, ամենալրիւք բարութեամբ մեծացեալք խաղաղացեալք ի բարիսն վայելէին:

 12:6 Furthermore, we noticed how they received as compensation from them peaceful and populous prosperity, abundance, fertility, and how they enjoyed every sort of goodness, splendor, and peace:

12:7 Վասն որոյ պատուէր տուեալ, ահաբեկ արարեալ թագաւորաց աշխարհին՝ զմարդիկն զարհուրեցուցանէին վասն պաշտաման դիցն յոլովելոյ. մի՛ գուցէ թէ խառնաղանջ բազմամբոխ խաժամուժ մարդիկ առ տգիտութեան ինչ արհամարհիցեն:

 12:7 For this, the kings of that land, by their commands, intentionally frightened the people so that they would increase their worship of the gods. A stern command was issued by the kings so that the populous common crowd of folk, in their ignorance, would not scorn religious observances:

12:8 կամ եթէ ոք յանկարծ առ փոխելութեան իշխեսցէ արհամարհել զպաշտաւն դիցն՝ հրաման ելեալ զաւրացեալ ի թագաւորաց, զի խլեսցեն բրեսցեն իշխանքն որ իցեն յիւրաքանչիւր գործակալութեան, զի շինութիւն աշխարհի ի դիցն բազմասցի:

 12:8 or that someone suddenly would not dare to insult the worship of the gods. The command ordered the princes in their own activities to root out and remove such people so that the land’s prosperity would be increased by the gods:

12:9 Զի գուցէ թէ յանկարծ ոք զդիսն անգոսնեսցէ՝ վնաս մեծ ի ցասմանէ դիցն յուզեսցի. այնպիսիքն զանձինս կորուսանեն, եւ աշխարհի մեծ ոճիրս վնասուց ի նոցանէն ընդոստուցանեն. վասն այսորիկ իսկ եւ ետու զհրամանս սաստից այնպիսեացն՝ պատուհաս մահու՝ թագաւորքն Յունաց յիւրեանց աշխարհին:

 12:9 Moreover, should anyone suddenly slight the gods, the great wrath of the gods should fall upon such an individual. Such people would destroy themselves and bring disastrous ruin on the land from them from the gods. Thus, it was for this reason that the kings of the Greeks in their land issued such severe orders threatening death:

12:10 Արդ՝ եւ մեք հրաման շինութեան կամեցեալ ձեզ, հոգացեալ զի եւ ձեզ ամենալրիւքն ամենաբարիքն ի դիցն բազմասցին, զի ի ձէնջ՝ պաշտաւն նոցա եւ փառաւորութիւն, եւ ի նոցանէ՝ շինութիւն, լիութիւն եւ խաղաղութիւն. զի որպէս ամենայն տանուտէր ընդ տան իւրոյ եւ ընդ ընտանեաց հոգայ՝ սոյնպէս եւ մեք հոգամք ընդ մեր Հայոց աշխարհիս շինութեան:

 12:10 Now we also want to give a command that will concern itself with your prosperity, increased by the gods for you, in all complete goodness. We command that you perform worship, and glorify the gods and they in return will deliver prosperity, abundance, and peace. Just as every householder [tanuter] cares for his own tun and his family, so do we, likewise, care for the prosperity of our land of Armenia:

12:11 Արդ՝ ամենայն նախարարք մեծամեծք եւ ազատք եւ գործակալք եւ սիրելիք մեր թագաւորաց, եւ շինականք, բնակք եւ ձեռատունկք եւ ձեռասունք մեր Արշակունեաց, զոր յանձանձեալսդ եւ սնուցեալսդ է, անխայեալսդ եւ յառաջեալսդ, վասն մեր աւգտի հասարակաց հոգացեալ, զի զդիսն պատուեսջիք:

 12:11 Now, worship the gods all you naxarars, grandees [metsamets], azats, and workers [gortsakalq], and those beloved of our Arsacid kings, the peasants [shinakanq], residents [bnakq], [dzeratunkq (?) and dzerasun (?)], whom we have provided for, nourished, cared for, and advanced, thinking to benefit our common good:

12:12 Արդ՝ եթէ յանկարծ ոք թէ գտցի, որ զդիսն անպատուեսցէ, եւ գտցեն զայնպիսին՝ կապեալ ոտիւք եւ կապեալ ձեռաւք եւ կապեալ պարանոցաւ ի դուռն արքունի ածցեն. եւ տուն եւ կեանք եւ արարք եւ ստացուածք եւ գանձք՝ այն ամենայն այնոցիկ լիցի, որ զայնպիսիսն ի մէջ ածցեն:

 12:12 Now should it happen that suddenly some person should be found disrespecting the gods, should they be discovered, let them be bound hand, foot, and neck and brought to the royal court. Moreover, let all the following items go as a reward to whomever uncovers them: their tun, sustinence, livelihood [keanq], their goods and belongings and [gandq] valuables:

12:13 Ողջ լերուք ի դիցն աւգնականութենէ դուք ամենեքին եւ ի մեր թագաւորաց՝ որ ընդ այս հրաման կամիք, եւ ի շինութեան բնակեսջիք ամենեքեան, զի մեք գլխովին իսկ ողջ եմք:

 12:13 Be well with the aid of the gods and our kings all of you who abide by this command. May you all dwell in prosperity, as indeed we are well:

12:14 Իսկ զամենայն ամս ժամանակաց իւրոց թագաւորն Տրդատ գոռացեալ ընդ Պարսից տէրութեանն՝ խնդրէր զքէնս վրիժուց մարտիւք պատերազմաց:

 12:14 Now throughout all the years of his reign, King Trdat attacked the Persian dominion, seeking vengeance through warfare:

12:15 Իսկ ի լնուլ ամացն, որ եղեւ Գրիգորիոս ի վիրապին, իբրեւ ամս երեքտասան, եւ էր մարտ սաստիկ խստութեան Տրդատայ ընդ Պարսից թագաւորին՝ զամենայն աւուրս կենաց իւրոց:

 12:15 In the course of the years that Grigorios was in the pit - some thirteen years - Trdat waged intense warfare against the Persian kingdom, for all the days of his life:

12:16 Իսկ միւս եւս այլ հրովարտակ հրամայեաց գրել ընդ աշխարհս եւ ընդ գաւառս իշխանութեանն իւրոյ՝ աւրինակաւս այսուիկ. «Տրդատիոս Հայոց մեծաց արքայ. առ աշխարհս եւ առ գաւառս, առ նախարարս եւ առ զաւրս եւ առ շինականս եւ առ ամենեսին ողջոյն. ողջ լիջիք, եւ մեք մեզէն իսկ ողջ եմք:

 12:16 King Trdat ordered that yet another edict be written and promulgated throughout the lands and districts of his realm. It had this content: “Trdatios, king of Greater Armenia, to the lands, districts, naxarars, troops, shinakans, to all, greetings. Be well, as we ourselves are well:

12:17 Դուք ինքնին գիտէք, զիա՛րդ ի բնէ ի նախնեացն իսկ յաղթութիւն խաղաղութեան բազում էր շնորհեալ մեզ դիցն աւգնականութեամբ, եւ կամ թէ ո՛րպէս զամենայն ազգս նուաճեալ էր, եւ ի հնազանդութեան ունէաք:

 12:17 You yourselves know that it was by the aid of the gods that victory and peace were granted to us - from the beginning, from the days of our ancestors, and that it was by the aid of the gods that all peoples were conquered and kept in obedience:

12:18 Իսկ յորժամ զդիսն ոչ մարթացաք հաճել պաշտամամբն, զկամս նոցա քաղցրացուցանել ընդ մեզ՝ հանին մերժեցին ի ցասմանն իւրեանց զմեզ ի մեծ տէրութենէն:

 12:18 Yet when we were not able to please the gods through worship or to soften their will toward us, in their anger they rejected and removed us from our great lordship:

12:19 Մանաւանդ վասն աղանդին քրիստոնէից պատուիրեալ ձեզ, զի հազար եւ բիւր դէպ է եթէ գտցի ոք, զի նոքա անհնարին լինին խափան դիցն պաշտամանն, զայնպիսին թէ գտցեն եւ վաղվաղակի ի մէջ ածցեն՝ յարքունուստ պարգեւք եւ պատիւք նոցա լիցին շնորհեալ որ զնոսայն յայտնեսցեն:

 12:19 Now especially as regards the sect of Christians, we are ordering you - whether it happens that such folk be found in their thousands or tens of thousands - because they constitute an impossible obstacle to the worship of the gods, we command that should such Christians be discovered, they immediately should be exposed. Gifts and honors will be bestowed upon those who uncover them:

12:20 Ապա թէ ոք չյայտնեսցէ զայնպիսին, կամ թագուսցէ, եւ գտցի՝ այսպիսին ընդ մահապարտս համարեալ լիցի, եւ ի հրապարակ արքունի եկեալ մեռցի, եւ տուն նորա յարքունիս երթիցէ:

 12:20 But should anyone not reveal such Christians, or hide them and it be found out, then those individuals should be considered among those condemned to death, and brought to the court to be put to death, while their houses will be given to the court:

12:21 Արդ՝ զոր աւրինակ ես ոչ խնայեցի յիմ վաստակաւոր Գրիգորիոս, յիմ սիրելին, որ վասն դորին իսկ իրաց չարաչար եւ սաստիկ տանջանաւք տանջեցի, եւ յետ այնորիկ ետու զնա ընկենուլ ի խոր վիրապն յանհնարին, զի անդէն իսկ միանգամայն աւձից լիցի կերակուր:

 12:21 Now, as an example, I did not spare my meritorious Grigorios, someone who was dear to me. For similar causes, I have tortured him with harsh and severe punishments. Afterwards, I had him thrown into the incredibly deep pit, where he immediately became food for snakes:

12:22 զի եւ ոչ զմեծ վաստակն նորա համարեցայ ինչ՝ առ սիրով եւ առ ահիւ դիցն, զի եւ ձեզ ահ լիցի այս եւ երկիւղ ի մահուանէն. այլ զի կեցջիք ընդ հովանեաւ դիցն եւ ի մէնջ բարիս մարթասջիք գտանել:

 12:22 Because of my love for and awe of the gods, I considered as nothing his great merit. You should have this same level of awe and fear of death. May you dwell under the protection of the gods, and from us find goodness:

12:23 Ողջ լերուք, եւ մեք մեզէն ողջ եմք:

 12:23 Be well, and we ourselves are well:
