12:0 Յաղագս թագաւորելոյ Տիրանայ յետ հօր իւրոյ ի վերայ Հայոց աշխարհին, եւ թէ ո՞րպէս Յուսիկ յետ իւրոյ հօրն Վրթանայ կալաւ զաթոռ հայրապետաց. եւ կամ ո՛րպէս սպանաւ ի Տիրանայ արքայէ վասն յանդիմանելոյ զթագաւորն:

 12:0 The reign over the land of Armenia of Tiran after his father, how Yusik occupied the patriarchal throne after his father Vrtanes, how he was slain by king Tiran for upbraiding him:

12:1 Եւ յանցանելն յաշխարհէ թագաւորին Խոսրովու, Տիրան որդի Խոսրովու ա՛ռ զթագաւորութիւնն զիշխանութիւն աշխարհացն Հայոց մեծաց:

 12:1 After king Xosrov passed from this world, his son Tiran [339-350] took the authority of the kingship of the lands of Greater Armenia:

12:2 Եւ ընդ նմին սուրբն երանելի մանուկն Յուսիկ յաջորդեաց զտեղի հայրապետացն Հայոց:

 12:2 With him the venerable, blessed lad Yusik succeeded to the position of the patriarchs of Armenia:

12:3 Բայց գումարեաց ընդ նմա թագաւորն Տիրան զմեծամեծ նախարարսն ըստ սովորութեան օրինակին, զմեծ հազարապետն ի հազարապատութեանն իսկ, ի տոհմէ ամենայն Հայոց մեծաց, զՎաղարշ, որ էր իշխան Անձտայ. եւ ընդ նմա զԶարեհ իշխանն, նահապետն մեծի Ծոփաց, եւ զՎարազ Շահունի իշխանն Ծոփաց աշխարհին, եւ զԳնիթ իշխան Հաշտենից գաւառին ի կամինական տոհմէն. զՎորոթ իշխանն Վանանդայ գաւառին, եւ զՇահէն իշխանն անձեւացեաց տոհմին, եւ զԱտոմ իշխանն Գողթան, եւ զՄանաւազ իշխանն կողբացոց. զԳորութ իշխանն Ձորոց աշխարհին, եւ զՄանասպ զխորխոռունեաց զիշխանն մաղխազունեան տանն:

 12:3 In accordance with custom, king Tiran assembled the following grandee naxarars: the great hazarapet from the tohm of the hazarapetutiwn of all of Greater Armenia, Vagharsh, prince of Anjit, prince Zareh, nahapet of Greater Copk, Varaz, prince of the land of Shahuni Copk, Gnit, prince of Hashtenits district, of the Kaminakan tohm, Vorot, prince of the district of Vanand, Shahen, prince of the Anjewatsik tohm, Atom, prince of Goghtan, Manawaz, prince of Koghb, Gorut, prince of the land of Jori, Manasp of the Xorxorhunik, prince of the Maghxazunean tun:

12:4 Եւ զմերոյ տոհմի ազգի իշխանն սահառունեաց, եւ զԱբա իշխանն գնունեաց:

 12:4 the prince of the Saharhunik azg, and Aba, prince of the Gnunik:

12:5 Զնոսա զամենեսեան հրամայեաց երթալ ընդ մեծի հազարապետին Վաղարշու, զի նստուսցեն զերանելին Յուսիկ յարքունական կառսն, եւ խաղասցեն գնասցեն ի սահմանակիցս իւրեանց ի մայր քաղաքացն Գամրաց ի Կեսարիա, հասուցանել զմանուկն Յուսիկ յառաքելական աթոռն հայրապետացն:

 12:5 Tiran ordered all of these lords to go with the great hazarapet Vagharsh to seat the venerable Yusik in the royal wagon, take him to their borders, to the capital city of Cappadocia, Caesarea, and to have the lad Yusik attain the Apostolic throne of the patriarchs:

12:6 Գնացին եկին հասին ի քաղաքն կեսարացւոց. ետուն ի կաթողիկոսութիւն զՅուսիկն ձեռնադրել, զորդին Վրթանայ:

 12:6 They reached the city of the Caesareans and had Yusik, son of Vrtanes, ordained to the katoghikosate:

12:7 Եւ նստուցին զնա յաթոռն առաքելոյն Թադէոսի, եւ յաթոռ իւրոյ հաւուն մեծին Գրիգորի. եւ դարձան անդրէն մեծաւ խնդութեամբ, եկեալք առողջութեամբ, յաջողեալք հասանէին յԱյրայրատեան աշխարհն:

 12:7 They seated him on the throne of the Apostle Thaddeus, on the throne of his grandfather the great Gregory. Then they returned thence with great rejoicing and arrived in the Ayrayratean land, in good health:

12:8 Եւ զիշխանսն երկոսին, եւ նոցուն Ծոփացն, յառաջ արձակէին աւետաւորս առ արքայն:

 12:8 They sent in advance to the king the two princes of the two Copks, to bring the glad tidings:

12:9 Ապա իբրեւ լուաւ ինքն արքայն, ընդ առաջ ելանէր նմա ի դաշտն յայն կոյս գետոյն Տափերն կամրջի, ամենայն բանակօքն բազմութեամբք:

 12:9 When the king himself heard about this, he and the entire multitude of the army went before Yusik through the plain to the other side of the river over Taper bridge:

12:10 Ապա ողջոյն տուեալք զցանկալի ողջոյնն միմեանց, անցեալ ընդ կամուրջն Տափերայ, մտեալ ի քաղաքն մեծ յԱրտաշատ, յեկեղեցին դառնային եւ նստուցանէին զցանկալի մանուկն Յուսիկ յաթոռ հայրապետական:

 12:10 After giving each other the desired greeting, they crossed the Taper bridge and entered the great city of Artashat, went to the church, and seated the amiable lad Yusik on the patriarchal throne:

12:11 Սա զհետ հօրն իւրոյ Վրթանայ զառաքելական յաջորդէր, հայրական չափոցն նմանեալ ծնունդ, ամենեւին զամենայն յամենայնի հրեշտակակրօն զանձն ցուցանէր, զամենայն ըստ պարգեւացն Աստուծոյ զշնորհացն կատարէր:

 12:11 As his father Vrtanes, he inherited the Apostolic throne, and he, the son, became like his father in his qualities. In everything he showed himself to possess angelic conduct, and implemented everything with God-given grace:

12:12 Քրիստոսական բանաւոր խաշանցն հովուելով, աւետարանական պատգամաւորօքն խրատելով ընձեռեցաւ:

 12:12 He shepherded Christ’s rational flock and counseled according to the message of the Gospel:

12:13 Զի աւուրբք մանուկ, տիօք առոյգ, եւ բարձր հասակաւ. գեղով երեսաց սքանչելի եւ չքնաղ, զի այլ ոչ գտանէր ուրեք նման նմա ի վերայ երկրի:

 12:13 Though he was but a lad, he was robust and tall, was extremely handsome and attractive, to the point that he had no equal throughout the country:

12:14 Սուրբ եւ պայծառ հոգւով, ամենեւին ոչ ինչ զբաղեալ ընդ աստիս. իբրեւ զքաջ սպառազէն Քրիստոսի, իբրեւ զախոյեան նահատակ ի տղայութենէ տիոց նշկահէր, աներեւոյթ թշնամոյն յաղթութեամբ սպառնացեալ:

 12:14 With a soul clean and radiant he did not occupy himself at all with mundane things. Rather, he was like a brave warrior of Christ, like a champion hero who, from his boyhood onward scorned and threatened the invisible enemy with victory:

12:15 Ակն առնուլ կամ աչառել մարդկան բնաւ ամենեւին ոչ գիտէր. այլ զբան Հոգւոյն սրբոյ սուսեր ածեալ ընդ մէջ իւր կրէր:

 12:15 He never showed partiality or bias toward anyone, but rather bore the message of the Holy Spirit like a sword fixed to his waist:

12:16 Իսկ շնորհատուր Հոգւոյն լցեալ զնա, գիտութեանն էր աղբիւրացեալ զամենայն լսելեացն ցուղս ականջացն եւ սրտիցն երկրին:

 12:16 The grace-giving Spirit filled him with knowledge with which, like a fountain, he irrigated the ears and souls of all listeners of the country:

12:17 Իսկ թագաւորն Տիրան, եւ այլ մեծամեծ աւագանին նախարարացն, կամ աշխարհն ամենայն, ոչ ինչ ըստ Աստուծոյ կամաց վարս յանձն առեալ` իմաստուն ինչ գնացեալ լինէին:

 12:17 However king Tiran, the other grandee noble naxarars, and the entire land did not behave according to the wishes of God, or act wisely:

12:18 Քան զամենայն մանաւանդ թագաւորն կամ իշխանքն սպանութիւնս` անխտիր ի հեղուլ զարիւն արդար ի տարապարտուց` գործէին եւ այլ մեղս բազումս. եւ ոչ հայէին ի հրամանս վերնոյն, ի հանապազորդ լսելոյն ոչ խրատեալք` ի յուշն նոցա առնելոյ զԱստուծոյ յոյսն:

 12:18 Especially the king and the princes wrought indiscriminate killings, shedding the blood of innocent people in vain and carrying out many other sinful things. They paid no attention to the heavenly commandments, despite the fact that Yusik ceaselessly advised and reminded them of God’s wishes:

12:19 Վասն որոյ հանապազ ընդդիմացեալ լինէր երանելի հայրապետն Յուսիկն, վարժ բանիւք համեստութեանն քրիստոսական խրատուն` հանապազ յերեսսն յանդիմանութեամբ հարկանելով խրատելով կշտամբելով, արկանէր զսպառնումն տանջանաց յաւիտենական բարկութեանն անշէջ հրոյն դատաստանին պատմելով, բողոքէր:

 12:19 For this reason, the venerable patriarch Yusik continually reprimanded them with experienced words, with modesty, according to Christ’s counsel, and to their faces he reprimanded, reproached, and blamed, telling of God’s anger and the eternal torments of the inextinguishable fires of judgement, and he protested:

12:20 Զի թէպէտ աւուրբք մանուկ էր, այլ զաւագութիւն ծերութեան խրատուն յինքեան ցուցանէր, զհայրենի գործ խրատուականն զառաւելութիւն քաջութեան կատարէր:

 12:20 Although in years he was but a lad, in wisdom he displayed the seniority of old age, and with great bravery he implemented advisory work and the work of patrimonial virtue:

12:21 Հարցն նմանեալ ի մանկութեան իմաստութեան, զծերութեան պատիւն պատուակալ պատուականութեանն զհանճարոյն զուարթութեանն ուշութեանն, իբրեւ զծաղիկ ի դիտաւորութեանն հասեալ, վասն ճշմարտութեանն մինչ ի մահ մարտնչէր. նախ զանձն ապրեցուցանելոյ, եւ վասն այլոց հոգւոց զնոյն առնել կամէր:

 12:21 From his youth onward, he had his patrimonial wisdom, the dignity of honorable old age, and reflected happy genius as a fragrant flower. For the sake of truth, he battled until death, first, to save himself, and then, he wanted to accomplish the same for the souls of others:

12:22 Այնչափ էր երկիւղած ի տեառնէ, զի ոչ զսէր եւ զոչ զահ թագաւորին առ ոչինչ համարէր:

 12:22 He had such piety toward the Lord that he cared nothing for the king’s affection or majesty:

12:23 Իսկ գիտութեամբն Աստուծոյ, դպրութեան գրոց սրբոց արուեստաւն լի էր. եւ առնոյր ի պատուհասել եւ յանդիմանել. արգելոյր զթագաւորն եւ զմեծամեծսն` չտալ թոյլ մտանել յեկեղեցին:

 12:23 He was full of the knowledge of God and skill in reading Scripture. He threatened and chastised, and prevented the king and the grandees from entering Church:

12:24 Արդ ելեալ կապէր մեծապէս պատուհասիւք, քահանայական իշխանական բանիւ յանդիմանութեանն, վասն անօրէնութեան պոռնկութեանն եւ արուագիտութեան եւ արենհեղութեանն, զրկութեան, յափշտակութեան, աղքատատեցութեան եւ այլոց բազում մեղաց` որ այսմիկ նման իցէ:

 12:24 With words of priestly authority Yusik threatened and reproached them for impiety, adultery, homosexuality, the shedding of blood, dispossession, ravishment, hatred of the poor and numerous other sins such as these:

12:25 Եւ ինքն վասն ահի սաստից օրինացն Տեառն` թշնամի համարեալ թուէր որոց հանապազ անցանէին զկարգօքն Քրիստոսի, եւ հանապազ ի սմանէ սուրբ բանիւն Աստուծոյ խոցոտեալ լինէին:

 12:25 He himself, out of awe of the severe commandments of the Lord, regarded as enemies those who perpetually transgressed the orders of Christ and broke the holy word of God:

12:26 Եւ այս մարտ պատերազմի էր սորա առ հասարակ ընդ ամենեսեան յանդիմանութեան զամենայն աւուրս կենաց իւրոց:

 12:26 Throughout the entire course of his life he waged a war of reproach against everyone:

12:27 Որ իբրեւ օր մի յաւուրց տարեկանաց, դիմեաց գալ թագաւորն Տիրան հանդերձ այլովք աւագանւովն մտանել յեկեղեցին, իսկ ընդդէմ բարբառեալ ասէր. չես արժանի, հի՞մ գաս, մ՛ի գար ի ներքս:

 12:27 On one of the annual feast days, king Tiran and others of the nobility came to enter Church. But Yusik cried out, saying: “You are unworthy. Why have you come? Do not come inside:

12:28 Վասն որոյ անդէն ի ներքս քարշէին զնա յեկեղեցւոջն. բրածեծ եղեալ ջաղջախեալ քահանայապետն Աստուծոյ սուրբ, երանելի մանուկն Յուսիկ, կիսամահ կոշկոճեալ ընկեցեալ լինէր:

 12:28 Therefore, they dragged him into the church, and clubbed and crushed God’s chief-priest, the blessed venerable lad Yusik. After beating him, they left him there, half-dead:

12:29 Զոր բարձեալ պաշտօնէիցն դրան եկեղեցւոյն ի Բնաբեղ բերդէն արքունի` մեծ Ծոփաց գաւառին, եկին բերին ի գաւառն Դարանաղեաց ի գեւղն Թորդան. եւ անդ ոչ ինչ յետ բազում աւուրց հանգեաւ, եւ եդաւ մօտ առ Գրիգորի եւ ընդ հարս իւր:

 12:29 Officiants of the court church took him from the royal Bnabegh fortress in the district of Greater Copk to the village of Tordan in Daranaghik district. There, not many days later, he died and was laid to rest near Gregory and his fathers:
