5:0 Յաղագս որդւոց քահանայապետին Վրթանայ, որոց անուանք էին երիցուն Գրիգորիս, եւ երկրորդին Յուսիկ:

 5:0 The sons of the chief-priest Vrtanes, the elder named Grigoris and the second Yusik:

5:1 Այս Վրթանէս եւ Արիստակէս որդիք էին մեծի քահանայապետին Գրիգորի, եւ էր Արիստակէս կուսան` սուրբ ի մանկութենէ. զի թէպէտ եւ կրսեր որդի էր, կանխաւ եհաս յաթոռ հայրենի եպիսկոպոսութեան:

 5:1 Vrtanes and Aristakes were sons of the great chief-priest Gregory. Aristakes, who had been a pure celibate from childhood, was first after Gregory to sit on the patrimonial throne of the episcopate, despite the fact that he was the younger son:

5:2 Իսկ Վրթանէս էր ամուսնացեալ եւ անորդի. եւ բազում ժամանակս խնդրէր նա յԱստուծոյ. զի մի՛ զրկեսցի նա յօրհնութենէն զաւակի, այլ ի պտղոյ նորա կացցէ առաջի նորա ի պաշտօն տեառն:

 5:2 Vrtanes had been married, but was childless. For a long time, he beseeched God not to deprive him of the blessing of a son, a fruit of his own who he would place in the Lord’s service:

5:3 Եւ ի ծերութեան նորա լուաւ տէր աղօթից նորա. յղացաւ ամուսին նորա, եւ ծնաւ երկուս որդիս երկուորեակս, եւ կոչեաց զանուն երիցուն յանուն հօր իւրոյ Գրիգորիս, եւ երկրորդին Յուսիկ, որք սնան զառաջեաւ թագաւորին Հայոց, եւ ուսման գրոց փոյթ ի վերայ կալան ուսուցանել զնոսա:

 5:3 In Vrtanes’ old age the Lord heard his prayers, his wife became pregnant and bore twin sons. Vrtanes named one of them after his father Gregory, and the other, Yusik. They were raised in the presence of the king of Armenia and they took care to give them an education:

5:4 Ապա երէց որդին Գրիգորիս եհաս յեպիսկոպոսութիւն կողմանց Աղուանից եւ Վրաց, վասն հոգեկիր առաքինի արգասեացն, բարեհասակ, եւ զգիտութիւն Աստուծոյ յանձին կրելով:

 5:4 Subsequently, the senior son, Grigoris, who was an attractive, virtuous individual, full of spiritual accomplishments and knowledge of God, attained the episcopate in the areas of Aghuania and Iberia (Georgia:

5:5 Ոչ ամուսնացաւ նա, այլ ի հնգետասանամենից եհաս յաստիճան եպիսկոպոսութեան աշխարհին Վրաց եւ Աղուանից, այս ինքն սահմանացն Մազքթաց:

 5:5 He did not marry, but already at the age of fifteen became bishop of the land of Iberia and Aghuania, that is to say, of the borders of the Mazkutk:

5:6 Երթեալ նորոգեաց անդ զեկեղեցիսն լուսաւոր կարգօք, առաջնոյն Գրիգորի` հօրն գործոցն նմանեալ:

 5:6 Going there, he rennovated the churches with luminous orders, resembling his grandfather Gregory in his actions:

5:7 Իսկ զՅուսիկ սնուցանէր Տիրան որդի թագաւորին Խոսրովու. եւ ետ արքայորդին Տիրան զդուստր իւր կնութիւն Յուսկանն որդւոյ Վրթանիսի:

 5:7 Tiran [339-350], son of king Xosrov, raised Yusik. The king’s son Tiran gave his daughter in marriage to Yusik, son of Vrtanes:

5:8 Եւ մինչ դեռ մանուկն էր, յետ միանգամ յառաջնում գիշերին մտանելոյ` յղացաւ կինն:

 5:8 His wife became pregnant after Yusik then still a lad entered her on the first night:

5:9 Եւ իսկ եւ իսկ ետես ի տեսլեանն` զի երկու էին մանկունքն, եւ ոչ հաճոյ ի պաշտօն տեառն Աստուծոյ. եւ զղջացաւ զամուսնանալն:

 5:9 In a vision Yusik saw as though it were reality that his wife would bear two lads not suitable for the Lord God’s service and he regretted his marriage:

5:10 Լայր եւ աղաչէր զԱստուած, եւ ապաշխարէր մեծաւ տառապանօք:

 5:10 He wept and beseeched God and did penance with great tribulation:

5:11 Եւ յամուսնանալն բռնադատեցաւ ի թագաւորէն իբրեւ զմանուկ. սակայն եւ այն ըստ Աստուծոյ շնորհացն գործէր, զի որք առ յապայն յառնելոց էին ի նմանէ հովիւքն գլխաւորք, որք յօգուտ աշխարհին եւ ի շահ մշակութեան եկեղեցեաց յաւետարանական հրամանացն սպասաւորել:

 5:11 It was the king who had forced him as a lad to marry. But this was also accomplished by God’s will, since in the future he had to provide principal shepherds who must serve the Apostolic commands for the benefit of the land and the profit of serving the churches:

5:12 Այլ սակայն նա ըստ այն մի գիշերն այլ ոչ եմուտ առ կինն իւր. եւ ծնաւ կինն երկաւորիս, որպէս եւ ետես ի տեսլեանն յառաջագոյն. եւ կոչեցին զանուն առաջնոյն Պապ, եւ զերկրորդին Աթանագինէս:

 5:12 But after that one evening, he did not couple with his wife again. Later his wife bore twins as he had forseen in the vision; they named the first Pap and the second Atanagines:

5:13 Եւ յետ միոյ գիշերոյ ի կինն մերձենալոյ այլ ոչ եւս մերձեցաւ ի նա, վասն առաքինութեան մանկութեան. իբրեւ ոչ եթէ զամուսնութիւնն ինչ աղտեղի համարէր, այլ կասկածէր նա ի տեսլենէն` զոր ետես, եթէ ընդէ՛ր բնաւ ի նմանէ այնպիսի զաւակ անպիտան ծնանիցի:

 5:13 With his boyish virtue, after coupling with his wife that one night, he did not approach her again. It was not that he regarded marriage as an evil thing, but rather, he had doubts because of the vision he had seen, wondering why such despicable children should issue from him:

5:14 Քանզի ոչ երկրաւոր զաւակի ցանկացեալ էր, այլ այնպիսումն` որ ի սպասաւորութիւն սպասու պաշտաման ծառայութեան տեառն Աստուծոյ կացցեն:

 5:14 For he had not wanted ordinary earthly children, but such who would stand in service to the Lord God:

5:15 Եւ զամենայն իսկ զերկրաւորս առ ոչինչ համարեալ, ոչ լաւ համարեցաւ զանցաւորս` այլ զվերինն. երկնակեաց կենացն ցանկացեալ հայէր:

 5:15 In general, Yusik scorned every mundane thing regarding as good, not the transitory, but the sublime. He wanted to look upon divine life:

5:16 Լաւ համարէր զծառայելն միայն Քրիստոսի` անձին փառս համարէր. ոչ ինչ ածէր ընդ միտ զսէր թագաւորին կամ ի նմանէ կուսէ զպատուեալն, կամ զմեծութիւն, կամ զընդանութիւն փեսայութեան թագաւորին, այլ յայնմ ամենայնէ ուրացեալ հրաժարէր, եւ օտարոտիս եւ գարշելիս եւ պատրանս համարէր:

 5:16 He regarded serving Christ as the only good and glorious thing, and ignored such things as the king’s affection or honor and exaltation from him, or the relationship of being the king’s son-in-law. He turned his back and rejected all of that, considering it foreign, loathesome and illusory:

5:17 Եւ յետ առաջնոյն այլ ոչ եւս խաբեցաւ երբէք ուրեք իբրեւ զմանուկ. այլ հայրական միտս զծերական հանճարոյն ստացեալ, զխրատն իմաստութեան անմահութեան:

 5:17 Following that first incident he was no longer tricked as a lad might be, but having received his patrimonial intellect and the wisdom of an old man, he wisely tended toward the immortal:

5:18 Լաւ համարեցաւ զնախատինսն Քրիստոսի, քան զմեծութիւն թագաւորացն. զճգունս վարուց ընդրեալ անձին իւրոյ, յերկոտասանամենից եւ ի վեր առաքինանայր:

 5:18 He regarded insults borne for Christ preferable to the greatness of kings. He chose for himself an ascetic life and from the age of twelve he was virtuous:

5:19 Որ իւրոյ հարցն նմանեալ, եւ զեղբօրն իւրոյ Գրիգորի զօրինակ բերէր անձին իւրոյ. զքրիստոսեան լուծն առանց ամենայն յապաղութեան ձգէր մինչեւ ի վաղջան:

 5:19 He resembled his fathers and followed the example of his brother Gregory. To the end of his life he bore the Christian yoke without any obstruction:

5:20 Բայց վասն զի թշնամանացեալ էր տուն թագաւորին ընդ նմա, եւ մինչ դեռ վասն այնորիկ զզուէին զնա աներք նորա, մեռաւ կին նորա. ազատեալ լինէր Յուսիկ ի յաներոյն:

 5:20 However the tun of the king was angered at him. While his father-in-law was dishonoring him for ignoring his wife, his wife died, and Yusik was freed from his father-in-law:

5:21 Եւ մինչ նա հոգացեալ վասն իւր ծննդոց մնացելոց զաւակին, եւ վասն այսորիկ հոգալով կայր յաղօթս առ տէր, եւ երեւեցաւ նմա հրեշտակ տեառն ի տեսլեանն, եւ ասէ ցնա:

 5:21 When Yusik was worrying about the children, the issue of his marriage, and was praying to the Lord, the Lord’s angel appeared to him in a vision and note:

5:22 Յուսիկ, որդի Գրիգորի, մի՛ երկնչիր. զի լուաւ տէր աղօթից քոց, եւ ահա ծնցի ի քո զաւակացդ այլ զաւակք:

 5:22 Yusik, grandson of Gregory, fear not. For the Lord has heard your prayers. Behold, other children will be born from your children:

5:23 Զի լիցին նոքա ի լուսաւորութիւն գիտութեան, եւ աղբեւրք հոգեւոր իմաստութեան Հայաստան աշխարհիս:

 5:23 and they will be illuminators of the land of Armenia [hayastan ashxarhis] and fountains of spiritual wisdom:

5:24 Եւ ի նոցանէ բղխեսցեն շնորհք պատուիրանացն Աստուծոյ. եւ խաղաղութիւն բազում եւ շինութիւն եւ հաստատութիւն բազում եկեղեցեաց ի տեառնէ նոցա տացի, բազում յաղթութեամբ եւ մեծաւ զօրութեամբ. եւ բազում մոլորեալք դարձցին ի ճանապարհս ճշմարտութեան. որով եւ Քրիստոս բազում լեզուօք փառաւորեսցի նոքօք:

 5:24 The graces of God’s commandments will flow from them and the Lord will grant through them much peace, and the construction and establishment of many churches, with great triumph and power. And many misguided folk will be turned onto the path of Truth. Through them Christ will be glorified by many tongues:

5:25 Որք սիւնք եկեղեցեաց լինիցին, եւ մատակարարք բանին կենաց, եւ հիմունք հաւատոց. պաշտօնեայք Քրիստոսի եւ արբանեակք հոգւոյն սրբոյ. զի ուստի հիմն իցէ շինուածոյն, եւ կատարն անտի լինիցի:

 5:25 They will be pillars of the churches, dispensers of the word of Life, foundations of the faith, servants of Christ, and satellites of the Holy Spirit. For where the foundation of a structure is, there the pinnacle will be found:

5:26 Եւ բազում տունկք պտղաբերք եւ շայեկանք եւ օգտակարք ի հոգեւոր դրախտին ի նոցա մշակութեանն աջոյն տնկեսցին եւ ընկալցին զօրհնութիւն յԱստուծոյ:

 5:26 By their cultivating hands many fruit-bearing, profitable and useful plants will be planted in the spiritual garden and be blessed by God:

5:27 Իսկ որք ոչն կամիցին տնկել նոքօք, եւ ի նոյն հոգեւոր ցօղոյն գիտութենէ ըմպել, խոտան գտանիցին` մերձեալք յանէծս, եւ վաղջան նոցա լիցի յայրումն հրոյն:

 5:27 Those who do not want to be planted by them and be watered by the spiritual dew of knowledge, will be cursed and rejected, and their end will be in the burning fires of Hell:

5:28 Բազում անգամ վասն տեառն լինիցին նոքա ի հեռ եւ ի նախանձ յանարժանացն. այլ կացցեն ի հաւատս անշարժ իբրեւ զվէմ, եւ յաղթեսցեն նոցա համբերութեամբ բազմաւ:

 5:28 For the sake of the Lord they will frequently be subjected to the spite and envy of unworthy people. But they will remain unmoved in the faith, as a rock, and will conquer the unworthy with much patience:

5:29 Եւ յետ նոցա թագաւորեսցէ ստութիւն, յապարասան յանձնասէր յարծաթասէր ի մտախաբ յանպատսպարան յանպիտան ի սուտակ եւ ի բանսարկու մարդկանէ. եւ ապա եթէ ոք գտցի` որ եւ արասցէ ունել զուխտ հաստատութեան հաւատոյ հազիւ հազիւ:

 5:29 After them will reign falseness, unbridled, self-indulgent, lovers of silver cheaters, untrustworthy despicable liars and slanderers, such that very few people will remain who will be able to hold firmly the covenant of the faith:

5:30 Եւ զայս ամենայն լուեալ մանուկն Յուսիկ ի հրեշտակէն, մխիթարութեամբ մեծաւ գոհանայր զտեառնէ Աստուծոյ, որ արժանի արար զնա այսպիսի յայտնութեան պատասխանւոյն. եւ զամենայն աւուրս կենաց իւրոց գոհանայր եւեթ յամենայն ժամ անդադար:

 5:30 When the lad Yusik heard all of this from the angel, with great consolation he thanked the Lord God Who made him worthy of such a revealed answer. And every day of his life he ceaselessly gave thanks:
