14:0 Յաղագս Հայր մարդպետին, յորժամ եկն էջ ի գաւառն Տարօնոյ` եթէ զիա՛րդ եկն ել ի տեղի աղօթիցն Աշտիշատ, կամ զիա՛րդ դատապարտեալ գնաց անտի յիւրոյ բերանոյն ի խօսիցն. կամ զիա՛րդ անկեալ, մահուն պարտ եղեալ, սատակեցաւ ի Շաւասպայ արծրունւոյ:

 14:0 Concerning the mardpet Hayr who came down from the district of Taron, went to the place of prayers in Ashtishat, and departed thence condemned by the words of his own mouth; how since he deserved to die he was done away with by Shawasp Arcruni:

14:1 Եւ էր մարդպետն Հայր այր չար եւ ժանտ բարոյիւք, անօրէն եւ անիրաւ քան զառաջին Հայր անուն մարդպետսն:

 14:1 Now the mardpet Hayr was a man more wicked and morally foul, more impious and unjust than the previous mardpets, styled [“Hayr”] (“Father:

14:2 Սա կոտորեաց զամենայն ազգս նախարարացն ի ժամանակս թագաւորութեանն Տիրանայ արքայի. եւ սոյնպէս առ թագաւորութեամբն Արշակայ` եւս չար քան զառաջինն գործել չար առ ամենայն մարդ:

 14:2 It was he who destroyed all the azgs of naxarars in the period of the reign of king Tiran; and similarly, during the reign of Arshak, he committed even more evils toward everyone than anyone had:

14:3 Արդ ելանէր սա շրջէր ընդ մարդպետութիւնն իւր. ապա եկն էջ Հայր մարդպետ ի գաւառն Տարօնոյ ընդ իւր գեւղսն տեսանել:

 14:3 Now he went and circulated about his mardpetutiwn, and Hayr mardpet descended into the district of Taron to see his villages:

14:4 Զայնու ժամանակաւ սուրբն Ներսէս շրջէր ընդ իւր ձեռական իշխանութիւնսն. զի հնգետասան գաւառ զայն ձեռական իշխանութեան ունէին իբրեւ սեպհական ի բնմէ, առանձին առոշոգի նոցա էր կարգեալ:

 14:4 At that time the blessed Nerses was circulating about his own area of authority. For they held those fifteen districts under their personal authority as sephakan, as was natural; they had been stipulated as their’s privately:

14:5 Եւ յայն գաւառ գլխաւոր գաւառք այս էին. Այրարատ, Դարանաղէ, Եկեղեաց, Տարօն, Բզնունիք, Ծոփք, եւ որ ընդ մէջ նոցա եւ որ շուրջ զնոքօք:

 14:5 And the principal of those districts were as follows: Ayrarat, Daranaghe, Ekegheats, Taron, Bznunik, Copk, and what was within and around them:

14:6 Եկն էջ եւ Հայրն մարդպետ զիւրով իշխանութեամբն շրջել. ապա եկն եւ սուրբ կաթողիկոսն Ներսէս յառաջին տեղին, ուր նախ էր զեկեղեցին շինեալ ի Գրիգորէ, եւ զվկայարանսն սրբոցն զվկայիցն. եւ անդ զյիշատակս սրբոցն կատարէր:

 14:6 Now when Hayr mardpet went to circulate about his principality, the blessed katoghikos Nerses had also gone to that foremost place where Gregory had built the first church and the tombs of the martyrs to perform the memorial services for the saints:

14:7 Ապա դէպ եղեւ անցանել Հայր մարդպետին առ տեղօքն, ցանկացաւ ելանել ի սուրբ տեղիսն Աշտիշատու կալ յաղօթս, եւ առնուլ ողջոյն ի սրբոյ եպիսկոպոսապետէն Ներսէսէ:

 14:7 It happened that Hayr mardpet was crossing those places and wanted to go to the blessed places of Ashtishat to pray and to receive a greeting from the holy archbishop Nerses:

14:8 Ապա իբրեւ կային յաղօթս, ետուն ողջոյն. հրաման տայր սուրբ հայրապետն Ներսէս, եկելոցն ճաշ պատրաստել:

 14:8 They prayed and greeted each other. Then the blessed patriarch Nerses ordered that a meal be prepared for those who had arrived:

14:9 Եւ մինչ դեռ նոքա պատրաստէին ինչ ըստ նմա արժանի աւագօրէն սպաս, նա ելանէր յեպիսկոպոսական կայենէն յապարանիցն մինչեւ ի վկայարանս սրբոցն. ի մեծ եւ ի գեղեցիկ հրապարակին զերթեւեկս առեալ շրջէր` զճեմս առեալ:

 14:9 While they were preparing something befitting his senior status, Hayr went for a walk from the episcopal residence to the chapels of the saints, strolling in the large and beautiful place:

14:10 Ապա տեսանէր զգեղեցկութիւն վայրացն, զնիստ շքեղութեան ի բարձրաւանդակ տեղեացն եւ զնայեացն ի խոնարհ, զի կարի վայելուչ էր տեղին. եւ չարակնեաց:

 14:10 When he saw the beauty of those places, its lofty elevation and the view which stretched out below which was very captivating, he placed his evil eye on it:

14:11 Ապա եմուտ բազմեցաւ յուտել եւ ըմպել:

 14:11 Then the eunuch returned, entered the dining room, sat down and began eating and drinking:

14:12 Իսկ յորժամ արբեցաւ սխաղակեցակ, սկսաւ ներքինին խօսել բանս հպարտս եւ ամբարտաւանս յարբելեաց. դնէր թշնամանս Տրդատայ արքայի, ի մեռեալս եւ կենդանեացն ի կեանս, ազգի եւ տակի եւ տոհմի արշակունեաց թագաւորացն Հայոց:

 14:12 When he was good and drunk, he started speaking arrogantly and presumptuously. He insulted king Trdat, and the dead and living Armenian kings of the Arsacid azg, race, and tohm:

14:13 Զիա՞րդ, ասէ, զայսպիսի տեղիս կանանցահանդերձ մարդկան տուեալ է, եւ ոչ արանց:

 14:13 He note: “Why were such places as these given not to men, but to people wearing women’s dress:

14:14 Եւ զսուրբ տեղեօքն քամահեալ արհամարհէր, եւ ասէր` եթէ զայս տեղիս ի բաց քակեմք, զի աստ պարտ է շինել զապարանս արքունի:

 14:14 Scorning and deriding the holy places, he continued: “We shall demolish these places, for a royal mansion should be built here:

14:15 Եւ թէ ես Հայր մարդպետ կենդանի իցեմ եւ առ թագաւորաւն հասից, ասէ, որ ինչ աստ իցէ, զայն ի բաց փոխեցից. եւ որ աստ իցեն, զնոսա հանից, եւ զտեղիս` արքունի սենեակ կազմեցից:

 14:15 And if I, Hayr mardpet, return alive to the king, I will replace what is here, remove the people here, and construct a royal chamber:

14:16 Իսկ սուրբ եպիսկոպոսապետն յորժամ լսէր, եւ ասէ` եթէ տէր մեր Յիսուս Քրիստոս, որ ընտրեաց նախ զայս տեղի` դնել զանուն իւր աստ, որոյ անունն առ հասարակ ընդ ամենայն տեղիս փառաւորեալ է Հարբն եւ սուրբ Հոգւովն հանդերձ, որ պատուիրեաց մի՛ ամենեւին յայլոյ ինչ ակն դնել կամ ցանգալ. իսկ որք ժլատեալք ի նորա նուէրսն բերեն աչս, եւ այնմ ցանկան, վասն այսորիկ նա մի՛ հասցէ առ այն` որով սպառնացաւն, այլ խափան լիցի իւր յառաջեաւ նմա բազում մակարդ մեղացն իւրոց գործելոց:

 14:16 When the blessed archbishop heard this, he note: “Our Lord Jesus Christ first chose this place to bear His name, by which name every place is glorified together with His Father and the Holy Spirit. He commanded us not to covet or desire the belongings of another. Now whoever greedily desires and covets what has been dedicated to Him, that person will not achieve what he has threatened; rather, his many sins will hinder the intention:

14:17 Ապա գնայր մարդպետն Հայր ի սուրբ տեղեացն, եւ էջ յափն գետոյն հոսանացն Եփրատու, ի հովիտսն թանձրախուռն անտառին, ի գետախառնունսն երկուց գետոցն, ի թաւութ խարձիցն մամխեացն, որ ի տեղւոջն ի հնոցն իմն շինած քաղաք` զոր շինեալ Սանատրուկ արքայի, որում անուն տեղւոյն Մծուրք կոչի:

 14:17 After this Hayr mardpet left the holy places, and descended to the banks of the Euphrates river, in a valley dense with forests of wild-plum trees, near the confluence of two rivers where in ancient times Sanatruk the king had built the city named Mcurn:

14:18 Արդ իբրեւ եկն եհաս յայն տեղի, ապա յուզեցաւ դատաստան բարկութեան ի տեառնէ ի վերայ անօրէնն Հայրի, եւ իւրոց գործոցն եւ բանիցն խօսելոյ:

 14:18 Now when he reached this place the judgement of the Lord’s anger was visited upon the impious Hayr for his deeds and words:

14:19 Ապա մատնեցաւ նա ի ձեռս առն միոյ, որոյ անուն Շաւասպ կոչէր, մնացորդ ազգին Արծրունեաց:

 14:19 He was betrayed into the hands of a man named Shawasp, a remnant of the Arcrunik azg:

14:20 Մինչդեռ նստէր նա ի կառս, եւ երթայր զճանապարհն, եկն Շաւասպն, սկսեալ պատմել մարդպետին սուտ ի քմաց իւրոց, եւ ասէ. Արջ մի տեսի սպիտակ իբրեւ զձիւն:

 14:20 While Hayr was seated in a wagon and was travelling on the road, Shawasp approached and began to tell the mardpet a fictitious story, saying: “I saw a bear as white as the snow:

14:21 Եւ հրապուրեաց զմարդպետն իջանել ի կառաց անտի, եւ հեծանել ի նժուգի. եւ մտեալ պառակէին մայրեացն:

 14:21 And he charmed the mardpet into getting out of the wagon, and mounting a steed. Then they entered the forest and lay in wait:

14:22 Իսկ իբրեւ ընդ թաւութսն անկանէին, զկնի եղեալ սակաւ մի Շաւասպն յետսագոյն մնացեալ, յետոյ յառաջ նետիւ հարկանէր զմէջ ներքինւոյն Հայրի. անդէն թափ հանեալ զնետն, եւ անդ յերկիր անգեալ սատակեցաւ:

 14:22 When they were in the bushes, Shawasp remained somewhat behind. He hit the eunuch Hayr with an arrow from behind that went right through him. Hayr fell to the ground and perished:

14:23 Եւ առն Աստուծոյ ասացեալքն հուպ ընդ հուպ վաղվաղակի կատարեցաւ զի ամենեւին բան ի գետին ոչ անկանէր առն Աստուծոյ:

 14:23 Thus, the words of the man of God had been fulfilled immediately. For no word of a man of God falls unheeded to the ground:
