7:0 Յաղագս մահուան Արշակայ թագաւորին Հայոց, թէ զիա՛րդ մեռաւ յերկրին խուժաստանի յԱնդմըշն բերդին ինք ինքեամբ ձեռօք, եւ Դրաստամատն էր պատճառք մահուն:

 7:0 Regarding the death of Arshak, king of the Armenians, how he died by his own hand at Anyush fortress in the country of Xuzhastan, and how Drastamat became the cause of his death:

7:1 Այլ յայնմ ժամանակի դեռ տակաւին եւս կայր կենդանի Արշակ արքայ Հայոց յերկրին իշխանութեանն թագաւորութեանն Պարսից ի կողմանս խուժաստանի յԱնդմըշն բերդին. այս ինքն որ անուն Անյուշն բերդն կոչեն:

 7:1 In that period, king Arshak of Armenia was still somewhat alive in the country under the authority of the kingdom of Iran, in the Xuzhastan areas, at Andmeshn fortress, which was called the Fortress of Oblivion, Anyushn berd:

7:2 Եւ զայնու ժամանակաւ խաղաղացաւ պատերազմ տալ Պարսից ընդ Հայս. զի արշակունին թագաւորն Քուշանաց, որ նստէր ի Բաղխ քաղաքի, նա յարոյց տալ պատերազմ ընդ սասանականին Շապհոյ թագաւորին Պարսից:

 7:2 In this period the Iranians stopped warring with the Armenians, since the Arsacid king of the Kushans, who resided in the city of Baghx (Balkh) was warring against the Sasanian king Shapuh of Iran:

7:3 Եւ Շապուհ թագաւորն զամենայն զզօրսն Պարսից գումարեալ խաղացոյց տալ պատերազմ ընդ նմա, եւ զորս միանգամ ածեալ էր գերութիւն յերկրէն Հայոց զամենայն այրեւձի գումարեալ` խաղացոյց ընդ ինքեան. եւ զներքինին անգամ թագաւորին Հայոց Արշակայ տանէր ընդ ինքեան ի գործ պատերազմին:

 7:3 King Shapuh assembled all of the Iranian troops, and took them to fight against him, and took, at the same time, all the captive cavalry from the country of Armenia. They even took with them the eunuch of king Arshak of Armenia, to fight:

7:4 Եւ էր ներքինի մի Հայոց թագաւորին Արշակայ, ոստիկան հաւատարիմ լեալ, ներքինի սիրելի մեծի իշխանութեան եւ մեծի պատուի, եւ անուն Դրաստամատն:

 7:4 There was a eunuch of Arshak, king of Armenia, who was a loyal ostikan, a eunuch beloved and possessing a great principality and great honor, who was named Drastamat:

7:5 Իսկ իբրեւ եղեւ պատերազմ ընդ թագաւորին Քուշանաց եւ ընդ թագաւորին Պարսից, չարաչար տարածէին զզօրսն Պարսից զօրքն Քուշանաց, եւ զբազումս կոտորեցին ի զօրացն Պարսից զօրքն Քուշանաց, եւ զբազումս ձերբակալ արարին, եւ զկէս փախստականս հալածական առնէին:

 7:5 Now when the war commenced, the Iranian troops were wickedly scattered by the Kushan troops. Many of the Iranians were arrested, while the rest fled, chased out. It happened that the eunuch Drastamat was involved in the war:

7:6 Իսկ Դրաստամատն ներքինին, որ յամս Տիրանայ թագաւորին Հայոց եւ Արշակայ որդւոյ նորա թագաւորին Հայոց լեալ էր իշխան տան գաւառին եւ հաւատարիմ գանձուց Անգեղ բերդին, եւ ամենայն բերդացն արքունի` որ ի կողմանս յայնս. սոյնպէս եւ յերկրին Ծոփաց ի Բնաբեղ բերդին գանձքն լեալ էին ընդ նովաւ, եւ բարձ նորա ի վեր քան զամենայն նախարարացն:

 7:6 He had, during the years of Tiran, king of Armenia, and Arshak, his son, been prince of the tun of the district and loyal to the treasures of Angegh fortress, and all the royal fortresses in those parts, similarly the treasures at Bnabegh fortress in the Copk country were under him. His barj cushion was higher than those of all the other naxarars:

7:7 Եւ քանզի այս գործակալութիւն եւ մարդպետութիւն, որում հայրն կոչէին ներքինեաց, գործ լեալ էր ի բնէ ժամանակաց ի թագաւորութեանն արշակունոյ, եւ զայս Դրաստամատն ներքինի զիշխանն զԱնգեղ տանն գերեալ տարեալ էր յերկիրն Պարսից ի ժամանակին` յորժամ կալան զԱրշակ արքայն Հայոց:

 7:7 Since this office and the mardpetutiwn whose occupant was called [hayr] (father) had been entrusted to eunuchs from the beginning period of the Arsacid kingdom, this eunuch, Drastamat, the prince of Angegh tun had been taken captive to the country of Iran at the time that king Arshak of Armenia had been seized:

7:8 Եւ այս Դրաստամատ էր յայնմ ճակատու, յորում վատթարեցին Քուշանքն զՇապուհ արքայն Պարսից:

 7:8 Drastamat happened to be in the battle in which the Kushans defeated king Shapuh of Iran:

7:9 Եւ Դրաստամատ գործեաց անհնարին քաջութիւն այնչափ կռուաւ եւս ի վերայ Շապհոյ արքայի, եւ ապրեցոյց զնա ի մահուանէ. եւ բազումս ի Քուշանաց անտի կոտորեաց, եւ զբազում զախոյանից զգլուխս բերէր զառաջեաւ:

 7:9 Drastamat displayed incredible bravery and even saved king Shapuh from death. He killed many of the Kushans and brought the heads of many champions before the king:

7:10 Եւ զՇապուհ թագաւորն Պարսից փրկէր ի նեղութենէն պատերազմին թշնամեաց անտի, ուր արգելին զնա ի խուռն պատերազմին ի զօրաց անտի:

 7:10 He saved king Shapuh of Iran when the latter was surrounded by enemies during the fighting:

7:11 Իսկ իբրեւ եղեւ յորժամ դարձաւ Շապուհ թագաւորն Պարսից յերկիրն Ասորեստանի, եւ մեծ շնորհակալութիւն առնէր ներքինւոյն Դրաստամատայն վաստակոցն, եւ ասէր ցնա Շապուհ թագաւորն Պարսից. Խնդրեա դու ինչ յինէն. զինչ եւ խնդրեսցես` տաց քեզ եւ ոչ արգելից:

 7:11 Now when king Shapuh of Iran returned to the Asorestan country, he greatly thanked the eunuch Drastamat for his labors, and king Shapuh of Iran said to him: “Ask for whatever you want, and I will grant it, without delay:

7:12 Եւ ասէ Դրաստամատ ցթագաւորն. Ինձ ի քէն այլ ինչ ոչ պիտի, բայց տուր ինձ հրաման, զի երթայց տեսից զբնակ տէրն իմ զԱրշակ արքայ Հայոց. եւ առ մի օր. իբրեւ ես երթայց առ նա, հրաման տուր արձակել զնա ի կապանացն, եւ ես իշխեցից լուանալ զգլուխ նորա եւ օծանել, եւ ագուցանել նմա պատմուճան, եւ արկանել նմա բազմականս` եւ դնել առաջի նորա խորտիկս, եւ տալ նմա գինի, եւ ուրախ առնել զնա արուեստականօքն մի օր ճիշդ:

 7:12 Drastamat said to the king: “I want nothing from you but that you order that I go to see my natural lord, king Arshak of Armenia. For the one day that I am with him, order that he be released from his bonds, and I shall wash his head, annoint, and dress him in a robe. I shall place him on a couch and put delicacies before him, give him wine, and make him happy with musicians. Just for one day:

7:13 Եւ ասէ թագաւորն Շապուհ. Խիստ են խնդրուածքդ զոր խնդրեցերդ. զի յաւուրց ժամանակաց` յորմէ թագաւորութիւնս Պարսից կանկնեալ է, եւ բերդն այն Անյուշ բերդ կոչեցեալ է, չիք ոք մարդ եղեալ ի մարդկանէ` որ իշխեցեալ է յիշեցուցանել թագաւորաց զոր յայնմ բերդի եղեալ զոք է թագաւորաց, յիշելով զայն մարդ` որ յայնմ բերդի զոք եդեալ է, թող թէ զնա զայր թագաւոր եւ զիմ ընկեր կապեալ եդեալ յայնմ բերդի զհակառակորդն. քան մինչ աշխատ արարեր զմեզ, եւ դու աւադիկ զանձն ի մահ եդիր եւ յիշեցուցեր զԱնյուշն, որ ոչ էին լեալ երբէք օրէնք թագաւորութեանս Արեաց ի սկզբանէ:

 7:13 King Shapuh replied: “What you ask for is difficult. For from the time that the Iranian kingdom was established, and that fortress was named Anyush, no one has dared to remind the kings about people whom they have put there. No one has recalled a prisoner there, to say nothing of this prisoner who is a king, my comrade, but now my bound adversary. You have taken your life into your hands by mentioning Anyush. Such a thing has not happened from the beginning of the Aryan kingdom:

7:14 Բայց վասն քո` զի մեծ վաստակք են առ իս, զոր ինչ խնդրեցերն` ե՛րթ, տուեալ լիցի քեզ. բայց քեզ արժան էր զօգուտ քո անձինդ խնդրել կամ աշխարհս կամ գաւառս կամ գանձս:

 7:14 However, because the labors you performed for me were great, what you have requested will be given to you. Go, but you should have asked for something to benefit yourself, such as lands, districts, or treasures:

7:15 Բայց յորժամ դու զայդ խնդրեցեր, անցեալ լիցիս զօրինօք Արեաց թագաւորութեանս. երթ, տուեալ լիցի քեզ որ ինչ յինէնս խնդրեցեր փոխանակաց քոց:

 7:15 What you requested is outside the laws of the Aryan kingdom. But go, what you requested will be given to you in exchange for your help:

7:16 Եւ ետ նմա փուշտիպան մի հաւատարիմ, եւ հրովարտակ` արքունի մատանեաւն, զի գնացեալ երթիցէ նա ի բերդն յԱնդմըշն, եւ զիարդ եւ կամք իցէ նորա, զոր օրինակ եւ խնդրեացն` արասցէ կապելոյն Արշակայ, որ յառաջ թագաւորեալն էր ի Հայս:

 7:16 So Shapuh gave him a reliable pustipan, and a hrovartak with the court seal to allow him to go the Andmesh fortress and do as he request for the bound Arshak who had formerly been the king of Armenia:

7:17 Եւ չոգաւ Դրաստամատն հանդերձ փշտիպանաւն եւ հրովարտակաւն արքունի յԱնուշ բերդն, եւ ետես զտէրն բնակ. եւ արձակեաց զԱրշակ ի կապանացն երկաթեաց ի ձեռակապացն եւ յոտիցն երկաթոց եւ յանրոց պարանոցէն շղթայիցն սարեացն. եւ լուաց զգլուխ նորա, եւ լոգացոյց զանձն նորա:

 7:17 Drastamat went with the pustipan and the court hrovartak to Anyush fortress and saw his native lord. He released Arshak from the iron shackles on his hands and feet and the chains of his neck collar. He washed his head and body:

7:18 Եւ ագոյց նմա պատմուճան ազնիւ. եւ էարկ նմա բազմականս, եւ բազմեցոյց զնա. եւ եդ առաջի նորա ընթրիս ըստ օրինաց թագաւորաց, եւ եդ առաջի նորա գինի որպէս օրէն էր թագաւորացն. սթափեաց զնա եւ մխիթարեաց, եւ ուրախ առնէր զնա գուսանօք:

 7:18 dressed him in a noble robe, sat him on a couch and made him recline. Before him he placed food befitting kings, and wine, after the custom of kings. He revived and consoled him and made him happy with [gusans] (minstrels:

7:19 Եւ ի ժամ աղանդեր մատուցանելոյ` եդին առաջի նորա միրգ, խնձոր եւ վարունգ եւ ամիճ, զի կերիցէ. եւ եդին դանակ նմա, որպէս զի հատցէ եւ կերիցէ զիարդ եւ կամեսցի:

 7:19 At dessert time he put before him fruit, apples, cucumbers and dainties to eat, and he gave him his knife to peel and eat what he wanted:

7:20 Եւ Դրաստամատ մեծապէս ուրախ առնէր զնա. կայր յոտն եւ մխիթարէր զնա:

 7:20 Drastamat greatly enlivened him. He stood up and consoled him:

7:21 Իսկ յորժամ արբեցաւ, եւ գինին եկն զակամբ նորա, արբեցաւ հպարտացաւ եւ ասէ. Վա՛յ ինձ Արշակայ. ա՞յս ես եւ այս, եւ յայսմ չափու եւ այս անցք անցին ընդ իս:

 7:21 But when Arshak had drunk the wine and become intoxicated, he grew arrogant and note: “Vay, woe is me, woe is Arshak. Look what I have fallen to, and what has happened to me:

7:22 Եւ զայս ասացեալ, զդանակն` զոր ունէր ի ձեռինն, որով զմիրգն կամ զամիճն կամէր ուտել, եհար ի սրտի իւրում. եւ անդէն սատակեցաւ, եւ մեռաւ անդէն ի նմին ժամուն մինչ դեռ կայր ի բազմականին:

 7:22 Saying this, he took the knife which he was holding in his hand to cut the fruit or delicacy, and plunged it into his own heart. He died then and there, on the couch:

7:23 Իսկ յորժամ զայն ետես Դրաստամատն, յարձակեցաւ եհան ի նմանէ զնոյն դանակ, եւ եհար յիւրում կշտին. եւ անդէն մեռաւ եւ նա ի նմին ժամուն յայնմ:

 7:23 Now when Drastamat saw this, he seized the same knife and thrust it into his side. And he died too, at the very same hour:
