4:76 Քանզի մարզ է աշխարհս. գուցէ յորժամ վնաս ինչ առնիցեն, եւ ինքեանք ցրուեալ վատնեսցին յաւտարութիւն:

 4:76 For this land is a frontier. Perhaps when they work any harm they may be scattered and lost to foreign lands:

4:77 Իսկ յորժամ աշխարհս թափուր լինիցի ի մարդկանէս, յայնժամ եւ քեզ գլխովին մեծապէս վիշտ հասանէ յարքունուստ:

 4:77 But when this country is emptied of its population, then on you especially greater trouble will be inflicted by the court:

4:78 Ետ պատասխան ի մարզպանն մոգպետին, եւ ասէ. «Ամենայն բանք խրատուդ զոր ասացեր՝ ճշմարիտ են. բայց զառաջինն զոր չիմացաք՝ տեսեր, եւ մեծապէս զղջացաք այժմ:

 4:78 The marzpan replied to the chief-magus, saying: “All the words of advice which you have spoken are true. What at first, we did not understand, you saw, and now we regret it greatly:

4:79 Բայց դու արդ զոր ասեմս արա, եւ բարիոք թուեսցի քեզ. սակաւիկ մի երկայնամիտ լեր եւ զխորհուրդս քո արգել ի բազմաց. բայց արանց՝ որոց ես ասեմ՝ նոցա յայտնեա, մինչեւ ես ինձ ոյժ ժողովեցից՝ զաւր ի թիկունս ածելոյ, եւ զուխտ եկեղեցւոյդ թերեւս կարացից երկփեղկել:

 4:79 But do what I say and it will seem good to you. Be a little patient and keep your thoughts from most people, except those men to whom I tell you to reveal them, until I can gather a force to bring support. Then perhaps I shall be able to split the covenant of the church:

4:80 Եւ եթէ զայդ այդպէս արարից, գիտեմ ապա թէ եւ զհրամանն արքունի կարող եմ կատարել:

 4:80 And if I manage that, I know that I can fulfill the king’s command:

4:81 Եւ անդէն հրոս հանեալ ի Սիւնեաց աշխարհէն, զիւր գունդն ստուարացոյց ի թիկունս աւգնականութեան մոգաց եւ մոգպետին:

 4:81 Then raising cavalry from the land of Siunik he increased his own forces for the support of the magi and chief-magus:

4:82 Եւ ապա սկսաւ ասել:

 4:82 Then he note:

4:83 Աղէ դու անգամ մի հրովարտակ ի դուռն տուր վասն այրուձիոյն՝ որ յԱղուանսն է տասն հազար, զի ի ձմերոց ի Հայս եկեսցեն. եւ յորժամ զնոսա ի ձեռին ունիցիմք, չիք ոք որ եղծանել կարէ զհրամանն արքունի:

 4:83 Now send a letter to the court that the cavalry in Albania, which numbers ten thousand, may come to winter quarters in Armenia. When we have them to hand there is no one who can subvert the royal command:

4:84 Պատասխանի ետ մոգպետն եւ ասէ ցմարզպանն. «Այդ խորհուրդ դարձեալ իմոց բանիցս ընդդէմ է. քանզի մեք յորժամ բռնութեամբ կռուեսցուք ընդ աշխարհիս, աշխարհս ի բաց քանդի, եւ մեք ի պատուհասէ չապրիմք. անձանց վնաս, եւ արքունի մեծապէս զեան:

 4:84 The chief-magus replied and said to the marzpan: “Your counsel is again contrary to my suggestion. For if we use force against this country it will be destroyed, and we too shall not escape damage—harm to ourselves and especially loss to the king:

4:85 Եւ ոչ ինչ կամեցաւ ամենեւին ունկն դնել նմա մարզպանն, զի սրտի մտաւք կալեալ էր զպարսկական աւրէնսն:

 4:85 But the marzpan had no desire to heed him, for he had sincerely accepted the Persian religion:

4:86 Սկսաւ այնուհետեւ պատրել զոմանս կարասեաւ եւ զոմանս ողոքական բանիւք. զռամիկն ամենայն՝ ահեղ բանիւք սպառնացեալ սրտաթափ առնէր:

 4:86 Then he began to deceive some with money and others with blandishing words. By threatening all the common people in fearful words, he disheartened them:

4:87 Հանապազորդ առատացոյց զռոճիկսն տաճարին, եւ յերկարէր զնուագսն ուրախութեան, մաշելով զերկայնութիւն գիշերացն յերգս արբեցութեան եւ ի կաքաւս լկտութեան, քաղցրացուցանէր ոմանց զկարգս երաժշտական եւ զերգս հեթանոսականս. մեծապէս գովութիւն մատուցանէր աւրինաց թագաւորին:

 4:87 He continually increased the allowances of the banqueting-hall, he extended the music of jollity, stretching out the nights in drunken singing and lascivious dancing. He amused some with music and pagan songs, and heaped great praise on the king’s religion:

4:88 Բերեալ էր եւ յարքունուստ բազմութիւն կարասւոյ, եւ միում միում կաշառ գաղտ խթէր ի պատճառս պարգեւի եւ պատուոյ. եւ բազում նենգութեամբ զանմեղ մարդիկ հրապուրէր եւ յինքն արկանէր:

 4:88 He had brought from the treasury a mass of wealth and he secretly distributed bribes to each person on the pretext of giving gifts and honor; and very deceitfully he enticed innocent men and drew them to himself:

4:89 Իսկ զայս ամենայն իբրեւ տեսին սուրբ եպիսկոպոսունքն, եւս քաջ դրդեալ յորդորեցան ի նոյն միաբանութիւն. եւ հնարագէտ իմաստութեամբ ընդ երկուս բաժանեցին զբանակն:

 4:89 But when the holy bishops saw all this, they were even more fervent and animated for their union. With shrewd wisdom they divided the army into two:

4:90 Մանաւանդ իբրեւ հաստատեալ գիտացին ի միտս իւրեանց, եթէ անաւրէն իշխանն Սիւնեաց զաւրհասական վէրսն ի յոգիսն ընկալեալ էր, խորշեցան մերժեցան եւ ի բաց փախեան ի նմանէ:

 4:90 And especially when they realized for certain that the impious prince of Siunik had inflicted mortal wounds on his soul, they turned away in horror and avoided him:

4:91 Խորհուրդ արարեալ ի գիշերի միում ամենայն ուխտին բազմութեամբ՝ կոչեցին եւ զսպարապետն զաւրուն ի խորհուրդն, հարցին եւ քննեցին եւ ի վերայ հասին մտացն անշարժութեան, որոյ ոչ եւ առ սակաւ մի թերացեալ էր ի սիրոյն Քրիստոսի:

 4:91 One evening the entire group of the clergy held council. Summoning the commander of the army to the council for questioning and investigation, they realized the firmness of his mind, and that he had not in the least failed in his love for Christ:

4:92 Եւ միաբան աղաւթս արարեալ ի վերայ նորա, վերստին ընկալան զնա յառաքինութիւն:

 4:92 After praying together over him, they received him again into the fold of virtue:

4:93 Եւ նովաւ որսացան զբազումս ի նոյն միաբանութիւն, որք ոչ էին քակեալ յառաջին միաբանութենէն. եկին եւ ժողովեցան գունդ զաւրաց բազմաց:

 4:93 Through him they brought many to the same union; those who had not broken away from the former union came and joined them, a force of many troops:

4:94 Եւ եւս առաւել հեռագոյն զատան ի մոգացն եւ ի մոգպետէն եւ յանաւրինէն Վասակայ:

 4:94 And they became even more removed from the magi and the chief-magus and the impious Vasak:

4:95 Իսկ նա այնչափ յիմարեցոյց ափշեցոյց զմիտս մոգպետին, մինչեւ չետ նմա իմանալ զելս իրացն:

 4:95 But the latter had so demented and dulled the mind of the chief-magus that he was unable to understand the consequences of his deeds:

4:96 Սկսաւ բաշխել մոգս ի տունս նախարարացն եւ մեծամեծ ռոճիկս կարգել, զոհել պատրուճակս, եւ բռնաբար կնքաւոր մարդկանն տալ ուտել միս յազածոյ, եւ երկիր պագանել արեգականն:

 4:96 He began to distribute the magi among the houses of the nobles, to arrange vast allowances, to sacrifice beasts, forcibly to oblige baptized men to eat sacrificial meat and to worship the sun:

4:97 Իբրեւ սկսաւ բազմանալ ընդ ամենայն աշխարհն այնպիսի պղծագործ խառնակութիւն, յանդգնեցան եւ եւս կանայք փշտիպանացն յաւուր կիւրակէի անցուցանել զճրագունս եկեղեցւոյն եւ պատառել զհանդերձս հաւատաւոր կանանցն:

 4:97 After such filthy practices began to multiply throughout the whole country, even the wives of the Lifeguards dared to extinguish the church lamps on Sunday and to tear the garments of the nuns:

4:98 Զայս գուժկան աղմկի իբրեւ տեսին միաբան սուրբ եպիսկոպոսունքն, զաւետարանն ի ձեռն առեալ հասին եւ անկան առանց հարցանելոյ ի վանս սպարապետին, ուր ժողովեալ էին զաւրքն Հայոց:

 4:98 When all the holy bishops saw this grievous clamor, taking the Gospel in their hands, without asking they entered the general’s quarters where were gathered all the Armenian troops:

4:99 Համբարձին զձայնս իւրեանց եւ ասեն. «Աղաչեմք զձեզ զամենեսեան սուրբ աւետարանաւս. եթէ ձերով խորհրդիւ գործեն զայն անաւրէնութեան չարիս մարզպանն եւ մոգպետն, նախ զմեր պարանոցս հատէք, եւ ապա յեկեղեցին ձեռնարկեցէք:

 4:99 They raised their voices and note: “We beg you all by this Holy Gospel—if at your advice the marzpan and chief-magus are committing these impious crimes, first cut off our heads and then seize the church:

4:100 Ապա թէ առանց ձեր կամաց նոքա զայն չարիսն գործեն, այսաւր խնդրեսցի վրէժդ այդ ի նոցանէ:

 4:100 But if they are committing these evils against your will, today let your vengeance be sought from them:
