85:0 Եւ զայս ամենայն զմտաւ ածեալ այսպէս Շապհոյ` չուէր վաղիւն ի գաւառն Բասենոյ, եւ եկեալ ի գիւղն, զոր Ալուարն կոչեն:	85:0 So Shapuh thought all of this over. The next day he went to the district of Basean, to a village called Aluar:
85:1 Եւ մինչդեռ տարակուսեալ տանջէին խորհուրդք զնա յերկիւղէ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի` եկեալ հասանէր յանկարծակի դեսպան ի Պարսից, ունելով գոյժ չարաչար եւ նամականի բազում անողջոյն, զոր գրէր առ Շապուհ ի Պարսից աւագորերոյ, եւ յայլ իւրաքանչիւր ազգականաց եւ սիրելեաց, որք յանթիւ սաստիկ կոտորածէ Հեփթաղին զերծեալք էին:	85:1 While he was tormented by fearful thoughts of Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, suddenly an emissary arrived from the Iranians bearing exceedingly bad news and letters containing much unpleasantness, written to Shapuh by the Iranian noble folk, and each of his relatives and friends who had escaped countless severe defeats from the Hepthalites:
85:2 Եւ ընկալեալ Շապհոյ զնամականին, եւ հասեալ ի վերայ ծանր եւ կարեւոր չարեաց, եւ զայնպիսի ահաւոր զբեկումն զաշխարհին Արեաց ծանուցեալ ի գրելոցն` ի մեծ տրտմութիւն ապշութեան ընկղմեալ զարհուրէր:	85:2 Shapuh took the letters, and, coming upon those passages which related the heavy and serious torments and the awesome destruction of the land of the Aryans, he sank into a state of dismayed terror:
85:3 Եւ կացեալ ժամանակս ինչ անխաւսս, իբրեւ թալկացեալ` ոչ ինչ բան կարէր հարցանել զայրն թղթաբեր, եւ ոչ անձին զգալ:	85:3 He remained speechless for a while like a fainting person, unable to ask the bringer of the correspondence anything or to come to his senses:
85:4 Եւ զգացեալ յետ բազում ժամուց, որպէս յապշութենէ եւ ի թմրութեանց, եւ կոչեցեալ զայրն` առանձինն հարցանէր, թէ ո՞րպէս եւ կամ զիա՞րդ սպառսպուռ եհաս այնպիսի վախճան եւ կործանումն Արեաց աշխարհին. եւ կամ ո՞ կարացեալ զերծանել եբեր զհամբաւ կոտորածին զայնչափ անթիւ բազմութեան զաւրացն բովանդակի, եւ կամ թէ զիա՞րդ արդեաւք մեռաւ աստուածանման տէրն Պերոզ, եւ կամ ո՞րպիսի մահու:	85:4 After many hours he awoke as though from being dazed and drugged, and called the man, questioning him alone as to how and why such an end and destruction should have been visited upon the land of the Aryans, or who could escape and bring the news of the destruction of such a countless multitude of troops, and why did the godlike lord Peroz die, and what sort of a death was it:
85:5 Եւ դեսպանին պատասխանի արարեալ ասէր, թէ «Քո հարցանելդ պատշաճ եւ ի դէպ է, որպէս ամենայն մարդ, որ կամի լսել ի պատգամաւորացն զիրս պիտոյիցն եւ զտեղեկութիւնն. բայց ինձ կարի ծանր է խաւսել զվատ բանս, եւ տալ զրոյց զայնպիսի չար աղէտից ի զերծելոց փախստէիցն. եւ մանաւանդ որում ոք այնչափ վնասուց եւ բեկման չէ պատճառ` բայց ինքն աստուածանման տէրն Արեաց Պերոզ:	85:5 The emissary responded: “Your questions are proper and appropriate to anyone who wants to hear important and useful information from emissaries. However, it is very difficult for me to speak bad words and to narrate such wicked calamities and the escape of the fugitives. This is especially so when the cause of such injury and destruction was none other than the godlike lord of the Aryana, Peroz, himself:
85:6 եւ իբրեւ ոչինչ առն ծառայի զաստուածոց ասել վատ ինչ` մահ է եւ կորուստ: Բայց վասն զի ի ժամուս յաստուածոցն ցասմանէ վատ պատահումն եղեւ տեառնն Արեաց եւ բնաւի աշխարհին, եւ պատճառ ոչ ոք եղեւ այլ, բայց ինքն տէրն իւրում անձինն եւ Արեաց` ասել զտեսեալսն եւ զլուեալսն հարկ է, եւ չ վճարի առանց ասելոյ:	85:6 Although for a serving-man speaking ill about the gods brings death and destruction, nonetheless, it is necessary to say what was seen and heard and the matter cannot be ended without this. This is because presently the bad experience of the lord of the Aryans and of the entire land was due to the wrath of the gods, and the cause was none other than the lord of the Aryans himself:
85:7 Նախ մինչդեռ այդրէն իսկ էր ի Վրկանի Պերոզ, եւ զաւրաժողով արարեալ յամենայն կողմանց, կամէր խաղալ ի վերայ Հեփթաղին, խորհեալ առանձին միայն, եւ ոչ զոք հարցանէր ի մարդկանէ զարժանն եւ զանարժանն. բայց զայս եւեթ գիտէր ամենայն գնդին մարդ, եթէ ընդ Հեփթաղին կամի կռուել:	85:7 First, when Peroz was still in Hyrcania and massing troops from all sides, he wanted to go against the Hepthalites. He kept his thoughts to himself and did not ask anyone about the worthiness or unworthiness of the men. But everyone in the brigade knew that he wanted to fight the Hepthalites:
85:8 Լքեալ եւ սրտաբեկեալ ամենայն մարդ` տեսանել լոկ սիրով չ կարէր զայրն Հեփթաղ եւ կամ զանունն լոկ լսել, թող թէ կռուով ընդդէմ Հեփթաղի երթալ եւ կամ յայտնի ելանել, յիշելով զահ եւ զպաշարումն, զոր անցին ընդ տէրն Արեաց եւ ընդ Պարսիկս:	85:8 Recalling the terror and besiegement which (the Hepthalites) had put the lord of the Aryans and the Iranians to (previously), all of the men felt abandoned and broken-hearted and were unable to see a Hepthalite, or hear the name Hepthalite, to say nothing about actually going to fight against the Hepthalites:
85:9 Եւ յայտնի աղաղակէր ամենայն բերան. «Եթէ մահապարտ եմք, եւ արքայից արքայ զմեզ սպանանել կամի` ինքն իսկ աստէն սուր ի վերայ եդեալ հրամայեսցէ սպանանել, քան եթէ սրով Հեփթաղին տայ կորուսանել զԱրիս, որ գործ մինչեւ ցյաւիտեանս զանձն եւ զԱրեաց աշխարհ վատանուն առնէ:	85:9 Every mouth was plainly saying: ’If we are condemned to death, and the king of kings wants to kill us, let him order us killed here with his own sword, instead of letting the Hepthalites destroy the Aryans with their swords. For from such a deed he personally and the land of the Aryans will receive eternally a bad name. ’:
85:10 Զսոյն բանս եւ ամենայն աւագանի դրանն խաւսէին առ միմեանս հանապազ, եւ մանաւանդ սպարապետն Արեաց առաւել Վահրամ. զոր եւ համարձակապէս յականջս Պերոզի բազում անգամ հասուցեալ` եւ հրապարակաւ բողոքէր. եւ նա ոչ լսէր ումեք, եւ ոչ զգայր եւ ոչ յիշէր բնաւ զառաջին թշնամանս խայտառականաց իւրոց, զոր եգիտ անձամբ եւ ամենայն Արեաւք ի Հեփթաղէն:	85:10 All the court nobility was constantly saying the same thing, especially the sparapet of the Aryans, Vahram, who boldly and publicly protested many times to Peroz. But (Peroz) would not listen to anyone nor did he sense or remember his disgraces from earlier enemies—disgraces which he personally and all the Aryans had experienced from the Hepthalites:
85:11 Դիմեալ ի վերայ այնչափ բազմութեամբ Արեաւք եւ անարեաւք` գնաց. որք իբրեւ զմահապարտ ի մահ, եւ ոչ իբրեւ զպատերազմողս ի կռուել երթային:	85:11 So, with a huge multitude of Aryans and non-Aryans, he went against them. (The men) went as people condemned to death, not as warriors going to fight:
85:12 Տային զրոյց ապրեալքն անտի եւ զայս եւս, թէ յորժամ մաւտն հասաք անդր` առաքեաց առ Պերոզ Հեփթաղն, թէ «Քո ընդ իս ուխտ է երդմամբ, գրով եւ կնքով, թէ չ կռուիմ ընդ քեզ. եւ սահմանս կարգեցաք, զորովք չ իշխեսցուք թշնամութեամբ անցանել առ միմեանս. արդ` յիշեա՛ զուխտն եւ զնեղութեան պաշարումնն, յորմանէ ողորմեալ իմ արձակեսցի զքեզ, եւ ոչ սպանի, եւ ի բաց դարձիր խաղաղութեամբ, եւ մի՛ մեռանիր. ապա թէ ոչ լսես բանից իմոց` գիտա՛, զի կորուսանեմ զքեզ եւ զամենայն զանպիտան բազմութիւնդ, յոր դու յուսացեալ ես:	85:12 The survivors also state that when they had approached, the Hepthalite (leader) sent to Peroz, saying: ’You have an oath with me— sworn, written, and sealed—that you will not fight with me. We stipulated a boundary over which we would not dare to cross to inimically fight each other. Now recall that oath, and the difficulties of the besiegement from which I mercifully released you. I did not kill you but let you return in peace. Do not die! Now if you do not heed my words, know that I will destroy you and the entire useless multitude in which you are placing your hopes:
85:13 Քանզի ես եւ արդարութիւն ուխտապահութեան ի միասին կռուիմք, եւ դու եւ ուխտազանցութեանն ստութիւն ի միասին էք. եւ արդ` դու ինձ զիա՞րդ կարես յաղթել:	85:13 For I and the justice of oath-keeping are fighting together on one side, while you and the falseness of oath-breaking are together on the other side. So how are you going to be able to vanquish me? ’:
85:14 Եւ լուեալ Արեաց զբանսն Հեփթաղին` ասէին ցՊերոզ, թէ «Նա արդար է, եւ մեք սուտ կռուիմք:	85:14 When the Aryans heard the Hepthalite’s words, they said to Peroz: ’He is right; we are fighting falsely. ’:
85:15 Եւ Պերոզի սաստկապէս զայրացեալ Արեաց աւագանւոյն` պատասխանի արար հպարտութեամբ Հեփթաղին եւ ասէ, թէ «Զայս բազմութիւն գնդին, զոր դուք տեսանէք` կիսովս ընդ ձեզ կռուիմ եւ կորուսանեմ, եւ կիսովս զհող տեղեացդ, ուր դու լինիս` կրել տամ, ո՛ր ի ծովն եւ որ ի փոսն, զոր հատին` լնում:	85:15 Peroz, becoming greatly enraged at the Aryan nobility, haughtily replied to the Hepthalite, saying: ’With the multitude of this brigade which you will see, I will use half (of the soldiers) to fight with and defeat you, and with the other half I will transport the soil from the places where you are now to the sea and the trench to fill them up. ’:
85:16 Եւ առ անզգայութեան սրտին ոչ իմանայր, թէ դիակամբ ծառայից իւրոց լնլոց է զփոսն, զոր փորեաց ի կորուստ անձին իւրոյ եւ ամենայն Արեաց աշխարհին:	85:16 Because of the insensitivity of his heart (Peroz) did not realize that the corpses of his own servants would fill the trench which he dug to destroy himself and the entire Aryan world:
85:17 Եւ հասեալք առ միմեանս եւ հարեալք ի դիմի` կորեաւ ինքն ամենայն որդւովք իւրովք եւ աշխարհաւ:	85:17 When the two sides met and clashed, (Peroz), all his sons, and land were lost:
85:18 Եւ զերծեալք ի կործանմանէն արք սակաւ, եւ հասեալք ի Վրկան՝ պատմեցին ամենեցուն զամենայն անցս չարեացս այսոցիկ, եւ զամենայն արս աւագս եւ զայլ մարդիկն որ ի Վրկանին էին` փախուցին յԱսորեստան:	85:18 The few men who had escaped from the carnage reached Hyrcania and narrated to everyone all of these wicked developments, and this caused all the awags and other people in Hyrcania to flee to Asorestan:
85:19 Դեսպան արարին ի Վիրս առ Հազարաւուխտ, եւ զիս այսր առ ձեզ արձակեցին, փութալ ժողովել զձեզ առ միմեանս, եւ գտանել զհնարս, որով լինիցին ի միջի ե՛ւ ձեր անձինք եւ Արեաց աշխարհն:	85:19 They sent an emissary to Hazarawuxt in Iberia (Georgia) and they dispatched me to come to you, so that you would quickly assemble together and devise ways of keeping yourselves and the Aryan world alive:
