28:0 Սմբատ կոչի անդրէն ի դուռն Պարսից, պատուի տանուտերութեամբ՝ որ անուանեալ կոչի Խասրով Շում եւ առաքի ընդդէմ Քուշանաց: Նախարարք Հայոց՝ որք ընդ նմա: Գունդ մի սակաւաձեռն Պարսից պաշարի ի Քուշանաց եւ հարկանի յանլսողութենէ Դատոյենի: Սպանումն Դատոյենի: Սմբատ ի մենամարտի սպանանէ զարքայն Քուշանաց: Փախուստ զաւրուն Քուշանաց: Զաւրն Պարսից յաւարի առնու զաշխարհ նոցա: Մեծաւ քչով կոչի Սմբատ ի դուռն:

 28:0 Smbat is summoned again to the Persian court, is honoured with the office of tanutēr which is called Khosrov-Shum, and is sent against the K’ushans. The Armenian nobles who accompanied him. A small battalion of Persians is surrounded by the K’ushans and defeated because of the disobedience of Datoyean. The killing of Datoyean. Smbat in single combat kills the king of the Kushans. The flight of the K’ushan army. The Persian army plunders their country. Smbat is summoned to court with great splendour:

28:1 Եւ եղեւ՝ յանցանել ձմերայնւոյն, ի գալ գարնայնւոյն ժամանակի՝ հասանէին սուրհանդակքն հրովարտակաւք, եւ կոչեն զնա մեծաւ շքեղութեամբ ի դուռն արքունի: Եւ երթեալ յանդիման լինի թագաւորին ի Մեծ անուանեալ Դաստակերտին եւ ելեալ արտաքս ի դահլիճն, նստի ի բոբ եւ ի բահղակ:

 28:1 When the winter had passed and spring-time had come, the messengers arrived with letters and summoned him with great splendour to the royal court. He went and presented himself to the king at the place called the Great Dastakert. On coming into the outer hall, he was seated on a rug and a pahlak:

28:2 Յայնժամ տայ նմա արքայ զտանուտէրութիւն՝ որ անուանեալ կոչէր Խոսրով Շում, զարդարէ ի չքնաղս, ի գտակ եւ ի պատմուճան բեհեզեայս յոսկւոյ աւծեալ, մեծացուցանէ ահագին պատուաւք ի ճամբար ականակապ եւ ի գումարտակ, եւ ի գահս արծաթիս. արձակու ի նա զվաճառն փոքր, զդիւան աշխարհին:

 28:2 Then the king bestowed on him the office of tanutēr called Khosrov Shum, robed him splendidly with a hat and robe of silk woven with gold, exalted him tremendously with a collar set with gems, a necklace, and silver cushions. He bestowed on him the Lesser Ministry of Finance, the administration of the country:

28:3 Տայ նմա զփողսն չորեքձայնեանս եւ պահապանս դրանն նորա ի հետեւակաց արքունի. գումարէ նմա զաւր մեծաւ ահեղութեամբ յարեւելս յերկիրն Քուշանաց. եւ հրամայէ նմա առնել մարզպան՝ զոր ինքն կամեսցի: Իսկ սորա գնացեալ անտի՝ եկն եհաս ի մերձակայ երկիրն առաջին իւրոյ իշխանութեան՝ Կոմշ, եւ կոչէ առ ինքն ի Վրկանէ զբուն ձեռական զաւրսն իւր զհամաշխարհիկ եւ գնայ ուղղորդ յԱրեւելս:

 28:3 He gave him four-keyed trumpets and guards for his court from among the royal retainers. He gathered for him an army in fearsome array against the land of the K’ushans in the east, and he bade him make marzpan whomever he might wish. So, he departed, reached the nearby land of his former command, Komsh, summoned to himself from Vrkan his own original army of compatriots, and went directly to the east:

28:4 Եւ այս են իշխանք նախարարացն Հայոց, որ ընդ նմա իւրաքանչիւր գնդաւ եւ դրաւշու. Վարազշապուհ Արծրունի, Սարգիս Տայեցի, Արտաւազդ եւ Վստամ եւ Հմայեակ Ապահունի, Մանուէլ Ապահունեաց տէր, Վռամ Գողթնեաց տէր, Սարգիս Դիմաքսեան, Սարգիս Տրպատունի, եւ այլք ի նախարարացն: Եւ զաւրք նորա իբրեւ երկու հազար հեծեալ՝ յաշխարհէն:

 28:4 These are the princes of the Armenian nobles who joined him with each one’s contingent and banner: Varazshapuh Artsruni; Sargis Tayets’i; Artavazd and Vstam and Hmayeak Apahuni; Manuēl, lord of Apahunik’; Vram, lord of Gołt’nik’; Sargis Dimak’sean; Sargis Trpatuni; and others of the nobles. His troops were about [2,000] cavalry from that land:

28:5 Ետես զի զաւրքն Քուշանաց ասպատակեալ սփռեալ էին ի վերայ երեսաց ամենայն երկրին. եւ իբրեւ լուան զլուր համբաւոյ նորա՝ ժողովեցան եւ գնացին. եւ սա պնդեալ զհետ նոցա հասեալ՝ փութանակի հասանէր: Իսկ նոքա իբրեւ տեսին զնա զհետ նոցա հասեալ՝ դարձան ընդդէմ ճակատեցան, եւ բաղխեցին զմիմեանս պատերազմաւ. անտի ի փախուստ դարձան զաւրքն Քուշանաց, եւ վանեցան առաջի զաւրացն Խոսրով Շմոյ, բազումք ի նոցանէ մեռան եւ բազումք փախստական գնացին:

 28:5 He saw that the K’ushan army had spread out in raids over the face of the whole country. But when they heard news of him, they came together and departed. He followed in hot pursuit, and quickly caught them up. When they saw that he had pursued them, they turned to face him in line of battle; they attacked each other in a mutual assault. The K’ushan army turned in flight and was defeated by the army of Khosrov Shum. Many of them were killed, and many fled:

28:6 Եւ նա դարձեալ բանակեցաւ յԱպրՇահր՝ ի Տոս գաւառի. եւ ինքն նստէր երեք հարիւր արամբք ի քաղաքագեւղն որ կոչի Խռոխտ:

 28:6 He withdrew and camped at Apr Shahr, in the province of Tos; and with [300] men took up quarters in the walled village called Khṙokht:

28:7 Յայնժամ թագաւորքն Քուշանաց խնդրեցին իւրեանց աւգնական ի Մեծէն Խաքանայ արքայէն կողմանցն հիւսիսոյ: Եւ եկն ել ամբոխ [Լ] բիւրոյ ի թիկունս աւգնականութեան նոցա, անց զգետովն որ կոչի Վեհռոտ, որ ելանէ ի Թուրքաստանէ՝ յերկրէն Եւիղատայ, զԳիմնոսոփեստեայս, զՇամնն եւ զԲրահմնն, եւ հոսի ի Հնդիկս:

 28:7 Then the kings of the K’ushans requested help for themselves from the great Khak’an, king of the regions of the North. A host of [300,000] came to their support, and crossed the river called Vehrot, which comes out of T’urk’astan from the land of Ewilat via the Gymnosophists, the Shanin and Brahmn, and flows into India:

28:8 Եւ բանակեալ ի վերայ գետեզրն՝ ասպատակս սփռեցաւ ընդ արեւմուտս, եւ հասեալ յանկարծաւրէն պատեցին պաշարեցին զգիւղաքաղաքն, զի ունէր գեւղն պատուար ամրութեան շուրջ զիւրեաւ շուրջանակի:

 28:8 Camping on the river bank, they sent out raids westwards; and unexpectedly coming up they surrounded the komopolis, for the village had a strong wall encircling it:

28:9 Յայնժամ հրաման տայ Սմբատ երեք հարիւրոց անկանել ի բերդակն, որ ի մէջ գիւղաքաղաքին. եւ ինքն հեծեալ յերիվար երիւք արամբք, որոց էին անուանք այսոքիկ՝ Սարգիս Դիմաքսեան եւ Սարգիս Տրպատունի եւ ոմն մի ի զինակրացն գեղջու հեծեալ, անուն Սմբատիկ. եւ դիմեալ յանկարծաւրէն՝ ի դուռն հասին, հատին զամբոխին զաւրութիւն եւ գնացին:

 28:9 Then Smbat ordered his [300] men to take refuge in the fort at the center of the village. He mounted his horse, and with three men - whose names were Sargis Dimak’sean, Sargis Trpatuni, and one of the armed men of the village who was mounted, called Smbatik - rushed forward precipitously, reached the gate, cut through the crush of soldiers, and escaped:

28:10 Եւ երեք հարիւրքն անկեալ ընդ բերդակն որ ի մէջ գիւղաքաղաքին՝ դիմեցին ի վերայ զաւրաց նորա: Եւ էր հրամանատար զաւրուն նորա պարսիկ ոմն իշխան՝ անուն Դատոյեան, հրամանաւ արքունի:

 28:10 The [300] who had taken refuge in the fort in the middle of the village attacked the troops (of the enemy). The commander of their force was a certain Persian prince named Datoyean, appointed by royal command:

28:11 Արդ՝ թէպէտ եւ արձակու առ նա Սմբատ որ է Խոսրով Շումն, խոյս տալ ի նոցանէ, նորա ոչ կամեցեալ լսել՝ ել ընդդէմ նոցա պատերազմաւ. եւ հարեալ նոցա զզաւրս Պարսից՝ փախստական արարին զԴատոյեան, եւ ինքեանք ասպատակ սփռեալ՝ արշաւեցին մինչեւ ի սահմանս Ռէոյ եւ Ասպահան գաւառի, եւ աւերեալ զերկիրն ամենայն՝ դարձան անդրէն ի բանակն իւրեանց: Եւ հրաման հասեալ ի Մեծէն Խաքանայ առ Ճեմբուխ՝ անցին զգետովն եւ դարձան անդրէն ի տեղի իւրեանց:

 28:11 Now although Smbat, that is Khosrov Shum, sent word to him to withdraw, he did not wish to obey but went out to do battle against them. However, they defeated the Persian troops and put Datoyean to flight. They themselves sent out raids and made incursions as far as the borders of Ṙeyy and of the province of Ispahan. Having plundered the whole area, they returned to their camp. When a command came from the great Khak’an to the Chembukh, they crossed the river and returned to their own country:

28:12 Ապա հասեալ քննող յարքունուստ Սմբատայ եւ Դատոյենայ, այր ոմն գլխաւոր նախարար, որում անունն էր Շահրապան Բանդական: Իսկ արդարացուցին զաւրն ամենայն մնացեալն զՍմբատ. եւ Դատոյեան տարեալ ի դուռն կապանաւք՝ սպանաւ յարքայէ:

 28:12 Then an Inspector from court came to Smbat and Datoyean, a certain senior noble whose name was Shahrapan Bandakan. All the surviving troops exculpated Smbat. But Datoyean was taken in bonds to the court and put to death by the king:

28:13 Յայնժամ Սմբատ ժողովէ զզաւրն եւ վերստին սպառազինէ, գումարէ եւ այլ զաւրս բազումս յաւգնութիւն իւր, եւ դիմեալ գնայր ի վերայ ազգին Քուշանաց եւ արքային Հեփթաղեայ: Եւ նա անտի մեծաւ կազմութեամբ ընդդէմ ելանէ նորա. եկին հասին ի տեղի մարտին եւ ճակատեցան դէմ յանդիման միմեանց:

 28:13 Then Smbat assembled the army and rearmed it. He also brought in many other troops to his support, and went to attack the nation of the Keushans and the Hephthalite king. The latter moved against him with a large armed force. They reached the battlefield and drew up their lines opposite each other:

28:14 Արդ՝ պատգամ յղէ առ Սմբատ արքայն Քուշանաց եւ ասէ. «Զինչ աւգուտ է այսպէս խառնամբոխ մտանել ի պատերազմ՝ սպառել զաւրս մեր: Եւ կամ իւ ծանիցի իմ եւ քո քաջութիւնդ: Բայց եկ, ես եւ դու միայն մարտիցուք, ելեալ ես աստի ախոյեան, եւ դու՝ այտի. զի այսաւր ծանիցի քեզ քաջութիւն իմ:

 28:14 Then the king of K’ushans sent a message to Smbat, saying: ’What advantage is it that such a host enter into battle, or that our armies be destroyed? And how will my and your valour be recognized? Come, let me fight you alone. I shall come as a champion from my side, and you from yours, so that today my valour may be known to you. ’:

28:15 Իսկ նորա ձեռն յանձին հարեալ՝ ասէ. «Ահաւասիկ պատրաստ եմ ի մեռանել»: Եւ յարձակեալք աստի եւ անտի մեծաւ տագնապաւ ի միմեանս հասանէին. եւ ի մէջ երկուց ճակատուցն մարտ եդեալ ընդ միմեանս կռուէին. եւ ոչ կարէին վաղվաղակի զմիմեանս յաղթահարել, զի արք սկայազաւրք էին երկոքինն եւ կուռ սպառազինեալք:

 28:15 Then putting his hand on his heart, he note: ’Behold, I am ready to die. ’ Coming out from either side, they rapidly confronted each other. Between the two battle-lines they fought with each other. They were not able immediately to overcome the other, because they were both men of gigantic strength and fully covered in armour:

28:16 Ապա ի վերուստ իմն հասեալ աւգնութիւն՝ պատառի վերտամուտ բահլիկ եւ կուռ զրահին ամրութիւն արքային Քուշանաց ի նիզակէն Սմբատայ. զի հարեալ զնա զաւրութեամբ դիաթաւալ յերկիր կործանէր:

 28:16 But help came from on high: the armour of the K’ushan king, chain-mail from Bahl and a solid cuirass, was split by Smbat’s lance, and he powerfully struck him as a corpse to the ground and slew him:

28:17 Եւ զաւրքն նորա իբրեւ տեսին զարքայն իւրեանց՝ զարհուրեցան եւ դարձան գնացին փախստական. եւ սոքա զհետ արշաւեալ հասին ասպատակաւ մինչեւ ի Բահլ շահաստան Քուշանաց, եւ աւար հարեալ զերկիրն ամենայն, զՀարեւ, զՎատագէս, զՏոխորոստայն ամենայն եւ զՏաղական. առնոյր եւ զբերդս բազումս եւ զնոյնս քանդեալ աւերէր, եւ դառնայր յաղթութեամբ մեծաւ եւ բազում աւարաւ, եւ երթեալ բանակէր ի Մարգ եւ ի Մարգռոտ գաւառի:

 28:17 When his army saw their king (killed), they were terrified and turned in flight. The others pursued them with cavalry attacks as far as Bahl, the capital of the K’ushans, and they plundered the whole country: Harew, Vatagēs, all Tokhorastan, and Tałakan. He also captured many fortresses which he burnt down. Then he returned with a great victory and much booty, and went and camped in the province of Marg and Margṙot:

28:18 Յայնժամ հրեշտակք աւետաւորք փութով հասանէին առ արքայն Խոսրով, լիով զեղեալսն պատմէին քաջութիւն: Իսկ արքայն Խոսրով զուարճանայր զուարթանայր մեծաւ խնդութեամբ, եւ հրամայէր զարդարել փիղ մի մեծ եւ ածել ի դահլիճն. հրամայէ եւս հանել ի վեր զորդի նորա զՎարազտիրոց, որ անուանեալ կոչէր յարքայէ Ջավիտեան Խոսրով: Եւ հրամայէ գանձս ցանել ամբոխին. եւ գրէր առ նա հրովարտակ մեծապէս գոհութեամբ. եւ կոչէր զնա ի դուռն մեծաւ պատուով եւ շքեղութեամբ:

 28:18 The messengers bearing the news rapidly reached king Khosrov and described in full the acts of valour which had taken place. King Khosrov was happy and greatly rejoiced, and he ordered a large elephant to be decorated to bring him to the hall (of the palace). He also commanded his son Varaztirots’ to be promoted, who was called by the king Javitean Khosrov. He ordered treasures to be distributed to his host. And he wrote him a letter of deep gratitude, summoning him to the court in great honour and splendour:
