36:0 Եւ այս է թղթոյն պատասխանի՝ զոր գրեցին Հայք յԵրուսաղէմ առ Մոդեստոս:	36:0 This is a copy of the letter which the Armenians wrote to the emperor in Jerusalem:
36:1 Ձայն աւետաւոր փողոյ մեծի ի հրեշտակէն գոչէ մեզ ի ձեռն թղթոյս այսորիկ, հասելոյ յաստուածակերտ քաղաքէ այտի, որ աւետարանէ մեզ ուրախութիւն մեծ:	36:1 The sound of the great evangelical trumpet (blown) by the angel summons us through this letter that has arrived from the divinely-built city, ’which announces great joy to us. ’:
36:2 Վասն այսորիկ ուրախ լինին երկինք, եւ ցնծասցէ երկիր, զուարճասցին փառաւք իւրովք եկեղեցի եւ մանկունք իւր: Եւ արդ՝ մեք ամենեքեան միաբան գոչմամբ զհրեշտակական փառաբանութիւնսն երգեսցուք ասելով. «Փառք ի բարձունս Աստուծոյ, եւ յերկիր խաղաղութիւն, ի մարդիկ հաճութիւն:	36:2 Therefore ’the heavens rejoice, and let the earth exult’; let the church and its children delight in their glory. So, let us all with united voice sing the angelic praises, repeating: ’Glory in the highest to God, and peace to earth, goodwill to mankind. ’:
36:3 ՊԱՏԱՍԽԱՆԻՆ [Տ.] ԿՈՒՄԻՏԱՍԱՅ:	36:3 The Response of Lord Komitas:
36:4 Շնորհիւն Աստուծոյ յեպիսկոպոսապետէս եւ յամենայն ուղղափառ եպիսկոպոսացս եւ յերիցանցս, ի սարկաւագացս եւ ի դպրացս, եւ յամենայն ժողովրդոց աշխարհիս Հայոց՝ ձեզ նեղելոցդ եւ վշտացելոցդ, գանալից եղելոցդ եւ խրատելոցդ, յանձանձելոց եւ գգուելոց, սփոփելոցդ եւ սիրեցելոցդ ի Հաւրէն երկնաւորէ. Եղբայր պատուական Մոդեստոս, քեզ եւ ամենայն եկեղեցեացդ որ յԵրուսաղէմի. շնորհք Տեառն մերոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի, եւ սէրն Աստուծոյ եւ խաղաղութիւն բազմասցի:	36:4 By the grace of God, from me the chief-bishop, and from all the orthodox bishops and priests, deacons and readers, and from all the congregations of this land of Armenia, to you ’who have been afflicted and oppressed, beaten and punished’, but protected and caressed, consoled and loved by the heavenly Father. Venerable brother Modestos, for you and all the churches in Jerusalem ’may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and peace be multiplied. ’:
36:5 Նախ՝ գոհանամք զԱստուծոյ ի վերայ մխիթարութեանց, ընդ որ մխիթարեաց զձեզ, որպէս զի եւ դուք կարող լինիջիք մխիթարել զայնոսիկ, որ յամենայն նեղութիւնս իցեն: Զի ահաւասիկ մեք իսկ ի ձեռն մխիթարութեան ձերոյ որ եհաս առ մեզ մխիթարեցաք ի բազում վշտացս եւ ի սաստիկ նեղութեանցս եւ ի դառն կտտանացս որ նեղէին զմեզ:	36:5 First, we thank God for the consolations with ’which he consoled you, so that you too might be able to console those who are in all afflictions. ’’ For behold we too, through your consolation which reached us, were consoled from the many troubles and grievous afflictions and cruel torments which were oppressing us:
36:6 Այլ հաւատարիմ է Աստուած, որ սփոփեաց հայրական գթութեամբ իւրով զամենայն հաւտս հաւատացելոց ի ձեռն այդորիկ, եւ մոռացոյց զտրտմութիւնս մեր ուրախութեամբ լրոյս եւ ձայնիւ շինութեամբդ եւ խաղաղութեամբդ Երուսաղէմի: Բայց առ մեզ գոչէ մարգարէն, աղաղակէ եւ ասէ. «Մխիթարեցէք, մխիթարեցէք զժողովուրդ իմ, ասէ Աստուած, քահանայքդ խաւսեցարուք ի սիրտ Երուսաղէմի, եւ մխիթարեցէք զդա, զի լի եղեւ տառապանաւք:	36:6 But ’God is faithful’, who comforted with his fatherly pity all the flocks of believers through that (letter) of yours, and made us forget our sadness through the joy of this news and the report of the rebuilding and peace of Jerusalem. But the prophet calls out to us, saying: ’Console, console my people, says God; you priests, speak to the heart of Jerusalem and console her, because she was full of distress. ’ God has approached you as sons, because: ’Whom the Lord loves, he admonishes. ’:
36:7 Իբրեւ յորդիս մատուցեալ է ի ձեզ Աստուած, քանզի «զոր սիրէ Տէր, խրատէ». ո իցէ որդի, զոր ոչ խրատեսցէ զնա հայր իւր. «զի նորա վիրաւքն բժշկեցաք, եւ խրատ խաղաղութեան մերոյ ի նմա»: Բայց գիտեա դու զայս, ով եղբայր սիրելի, ոչ սակաւ մխիթարութիւն գործէին եւ մերոյ ժողովրդեանս յերթեւեկէ այդ ճանապարհացդ:	36:7 Who would be a son whom his father would not admonish? ’For through his wounds we were healed, and the chastisement of our peace was in him. ’ But know this, O beloved brother, no little consolation was conveyed to our people by the coming and going of those journeys:
36:8 Նախ՝ զի մոռանային զամենայն վիշտս եւ զտրտմութիւն աշխարհիս: Երկրորդ՝ զի սրբէին զմեղս իւրեանց ի ձեռն ապաշխարութեան, պահոց եւ ողորմութեան, տքնութեամբ զտիւ եւ զգիշեր անհանգիստ ուղեգնացութեամբ: Երրորդ՝ զի մկրտէին զմարմինս ի ջուր սրբութեան ի Յորդանանու յորձանսն հրադէզս, որ յամենայն տիեզերս աղբերացաւ շնորհքն աստուածային. զի սփռէին զանձուկ սրտի զաստուածամերձ Սինէական լերամբն առ Մովսիսիւ, զմարգարէականն (ասելով) ընկեր ցընկեր. «Եկայք ելցուք ի լեառն Տեառն եւ ի տունն Աստուծոյ Յակովբայ:	36:8 First, because they forgot all the troubles and sadness of this country. Secondly, because they cleansed their sins through repentance, fasts and mercy, through sleepless and unresting travelling by day and night. Thirdly, because they baptized their bodies in the water of holiness, in the fiery currents of the Jordan, whence the divine grace flowed to all the universe. For in the desire of their heart (the pilgrims) travelled around Mount Sinai, which in the times of Moses was close to God, (repeating) friend to friend the prophetic saying: ’Come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord and to the house of the God of Jacob. ’:
36:9 Այլ եւս զմեծագոյնն ասասցուք ըստ առաքելական ձայնի - «զմատչելն ի Սիովն լեառն եւ ի քաղաք Աստուծոյ կենդանւոյ, յԵրուսաղեմն յերկինս» եւ ի բիւրաւոր բանակս հրեշտակաց եւ յեկեղեցիս անդրանկաց գրելոցն յերկինս, զաթոռն Աստուծոյ ի վերայ երկրի տեսանել, եւ զդատաւորն ամենեցուն զԱստուած տեսանելով բազմեալ յերկնաւոր խորանի եւ ի վերայ աստուածընկալ խարսխիդ:	36:9 But even more significantly, let us repeat the apostolic saying: ’To approach Mount Sion and the city of the living God, the Jerusalem in heaven, and (to) the myriad hosts of angels and the churches of the first-born inscribed in heaven’; ’ to see the throne of God above the earth, observing ’God the judge of all’ sitting in the heavenly tabernacle and on the base that received God:
36:10 Իսկ իբրեւ դարձոյց Բարձրեալն զերեսս իւր ի մէնջ, եւ նայեցաւ ի մեզ խեթիւ արեգակնն՝ եւ հեստելով հեստեցան անձինք մեր եւ խռովեցաք: Տեառն Աստուծոյ մերում արդարութիւն, եւ մեր ամաւթ երեսաց: Այլ յորժամ կամեցաւ Աստուծոյ մարդասիրութիւնն ի վերայ կործանելոցդ սաստկութեամբ առնել բարերարութեամբ քաղցրութիւն, ընկղմեցաք ի խորութիւն բարձրութեան:	36:10 Now since the One on high ’turned his face from us’, and ’the sun looked on us askance’, our souls have indeed been disobedient and troubled. ’Justice (belongs) to the Lord our God, and to us shame of face. ’ But when the kindness of God wished in his beneficence to bestow sweetness on those who had been cast down by his severity, we were submerged in its great profundity:
36:11 Եւ ի վերայ այսր աւետաբեր նկարագրի՝ անդադար բերանովք անհանգիստ լեզուաւք զՏէր մեր Յիսուս Քրիստոս, զբարերարն եւ զսքանչելագործն եւ զպարգեւաբաշխն աւրհնեսցուք. զի թէպէտ եւ այնպէս ահա գին եւ սաստիկ էր սուրակոխ եւ հրակէզ աւրն դատաստանին քոյ, այլ ճարտարապետն իմաստուն, որ ընտրեացն եւ սրբեաց զձեզ որպէս ոսկի ի բովս՝ նոյն նորոգեսցէ վերստին զփառս իւր ի վերայ քոյ, եւ զարմանալի արասցէ մխիթարութիւն իւր ի քեզ:	36:11 For this image of the Gospel, with unceasing mouths and unresting tongues let us bless our Lord Jesus Christ, the doer of good, worker of wonders, and distributor of gifts. For although that day of your judgment by sword and fire was so fearful and severe, yet the wise architect, who chose and purified you like gold in the furnace, may the same once more renew his glory over you and work his wonderful consolation in you:
36:12 Այլ զայս ամենայն սիրելին մեր յառաջագոյն պատմեաց մեզ յասելն իւրում զէջ Սիովնի յԵրիքով, - զանկեալդ ի ձեռս աւազակացն, որք մերկացուցին զդա, եւ վէրս ի վերայ վիրաց եդեալ թողին կիսամահ եւ գնացին. տեսանել զդա քահանայից ճանապարհորդաց՝ եւ առնել զանց. տեսանել զդա հրէից եւ ղեւտացւոց եւ ամբարշտաց՝ եւ առնել զանց. զիւրովին ճանապարհորդելդ, գթութեամբդ մատչելդ, պատել զվէր դորա եւ արկանել ի դա զողորմութիւն եւ զարիւն կենարար:	36:12 All this our Dear Friend previously related to us in his description of the going down from Sion to Jericho - the one who fell into the hands of robbers who stripped him, and having inflicted many wounds left him half-dead and departed. Priests on their journey saw him and passed by; Jews and Levites and impious ones saw him and passed by. He himself journeyed, approached in pity, bound his wound, and bestowed on him mercy and his life-giving blood:
36:13 Ասէ ձէթ եւ գինի արկանել ի վերայ դորա եւ պատել՝ զի բժշկեսցի: Որ ահաւասիկ տեսան ածեալ ի պանդոկի յայդ եւ դարմանել եւ զերիս դահեկանս, որ ետ ի պանդոկապետն՝ ահաւասիկ դու ունիս ի ձեռս քոյ դարման առատ: Եւ զոր ինչ ծախեսցես ի դա՝ ի միւսանգամ իւրում գալստեանն հատուսցէ քեզ:	36:13 He instructed oil and wine to be poured on him and (his wound) to be bound, so that he be healed. Behold, they saw him brought to that inn and cured; and as for the three dahekans which he gave to the inn-keeper, behold you have in hand liberal provision. And whatever you will spend on him, in his coming again he will repay you:
36:14 Մի այսուհետեւ ողբասցէ Սիովն, եւ մի զգեցցի սուգ Երուսաղէմ, քանզի աւադիկ եկեալ հասեալ է արքայն Քրիստոս փրկել եւ մխիթարել. այլ պսակ մխիթարութեան քո ի ծաղկացու չարչարանաց նորա բոլորի, եւ մահ նորա թագ մխիթարութեան եղիցի ի վերայ գլխոյ քոյ:	36:14 Henceforth let not Sion lament nor Jerusalem mourn. For behold Christ the king has arrived to save and console them. But the crown of your consolation is completed by the flowers of his passion. And his death will be a diadem of consolation on your head:
36:15 Յոյժ հաշէին եւ մաշէին չարքդ որդիքդ հրէից, ով սիրելի, զի ծառքդ քրիստոսեանք, զորս հատին տապարաւք կատաղութեամբն իւրեանց ի ձեռն անմիտ փայտահարաց՝ ահաւադիկ արձակեցին շառաւեղք եւ բազմացան: Եւ ելից զդա Բարձրեալն ձիթենեաւք եւ արմաւենեաւք, զոր խաչահանուացդ մանկունք եւ տեսանել անգամ մի արժանաւորեսցին:	36:15 The evil sons of the Jews were greatly pining and wasting away, my friend, because the Christian trees - which in their madness they cut down with axes through senseless wood-cutters - behold have given forth shoots and multiplied. And the One on high has filled (Jerusalem) with olive-trees and palm-trees, which the children of the crucifiers will not again be worthy to see:
36:16 Բայց դուք, եղբարք, ըստ առաքելոյ ձայնին՝ ողջ լերուք ի Տէր, հաստատուն կացէք, մխիթարեցարուք, միաբան լերուք, խաղաղութիւն արարէք, եւ Աստուած խաղաղութեանց եւ սիրոյ եղիցի ընդ ձեզ. ամէն:	36:16 But do you, ’brethren’, according to the apostolic saying, ’rejoice in the Lord, stand firm, be consoled, be united, make peace. And may the God of peace and love be with you. ’ Amen:
