12:0 Յաղագս Խադայ եպիսկոպոսի բագրաւանդացւոց, զոր էր ձեռնադրեալ եւ թողեալ էր Ներսեսի ետեղապահ յիւր տեղի. եւ թէ որպիսի՛ այր էր, եւ կամ որչափ նշանք կամ զօրութիւնք որ ի նմանէն լինէին, կամ թէ ո՛րպէս կայր ի ճշմարտութեանն, եւ ոչ առնոյր ակն թագաւորին մեծի Արշակայ, եւ ընդդիմանայր եւս ընդդէմ նորա վասն անօրէնութեան գործոց ինչ. կամ ո՛րպէս խնամ տանէր աղքատաց իբրեւ զեպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս:

 12:0 About the bishop of Bagrawand, Xad, whom the patriarch Nerses had left in his place; what sort of man he was, the signs and miracles he wrought, how he stood up for truth, and ignored the great king Arshak of Armenia and how he reproved him for his impious deeds; how he loved the poor just as did the patriarch Nerses:

12:1 Այրս այս Խադ բուն էր սա ի Կարին գաւառէ, ի գեղջէ Մարագայ. ձեռնասուն էր սա եպիսկոպոսապետին Ներսէսի, զառաջեաւ իւրով զսա էր սնուցեալ:

 12:1 This man, Xad, was a native of the Karin district, from the village of Marag. He had been raised by the archbishop Nerses and nourished before him:

12:2 Այլ իբրեւ ի միտս աջողակս եբեր, եւ յառաջադէմ եղեւ ի հաւատս, եւ հաւատարիմ յամենայն գործս գտաւ, իսկ իբրեւ յայնմ եւս առաւել ի պաշտօնն` զոր ունէր զսէրն ընդ եկեղեցին Աստուծոյ, ապա աղքատաց եւս տեսչութիւն ի սրբոյն Ներսէսէ սմա հաւատացաւ. իսկ յայնմ եւս առաւել զբարեխնամութիւն ցուցանէր:

 12:2 He displayed mental quickness, prominence in the faith, in his position he was trustworthy in all things, especially displaying love for the Church of God. Then the blessed Nerses also entrusted him with superintendency of the poor. In this too he revealed his special consideration:

12:3 Ապա եպիսկոպոսապետն Ներսէս յորժամ երթայր յուղեգնացութիւնն յերկիրն Յունաց, ձեռնադրեաց զայս Խադ յեպիսկոպոսութիւն Բագրաւանդայ եւ Արշարունեաց, եթող զսա իւր փոխանակ ետեղապահ, եւ գնաց:

 12:3 Now before the archbishop Nerses left on his journey to the country of Byzantium, he ordained this Xad into the episcopate of Bagrawand and Arsharunik. He left him as his locum tenens and departed:

12:4 Իսկ աշխարհ ամենայն Հայոց լեզուին, ի գաւառաց գաւառաց, կողմանց կողմանց, տեղեաց տեղեաց մեծամեծք աշխարհակալք գաւառատեարք նահապետք մեծազգեացք եւ ամենայն ուխտ քահանայութեան, ժողովք միաբանական ժողովրդոցն, ի սուգ տխրութեան ընկղմեալ էին վասն իւրեանց հօտապետ գլխաւորին, զի հեռացաւ ի նոցանէ:

 12:4 Meanwhile the entire land of Armenian language was plunged into mourning over the loss of their shepherd and leader, who had left them: in the different districts and regions and areas, the grandees, holders of lands, lords of districts, nahapets, chiefs of the azgs, the entire covenant of the priesthood, and the united assembly of the people:

12:5 Իսկ սուրբն Խադ եպիսկոպոսն առ հասարակ աշխարհի տայր հրաման ի պահս եւ յաղօթս մտանել եւ ի խնդրուածս, զի դարձ լիցի սրբոյն Ներսէսի:

 12:5 The blessed bishop Xad commanded the entire land to pray and supplicate God that the holy Nerses be returned to them:

12:6 Եւ զամենայն ժամանակս, որչափ եւ արգելաւ նա անդ, համակ խնդրէին պահօք ժողովուրդքն. եւ ամենայնի իսկ Խադն առաջնորդէր նոցա, ոչ ինչ պակաս քան զիւրեանց բուն զհովուապետն Ներսէս, մինչեւ ի գալուստն նորա. մինչեւ կատարեաց տէր զաշխարհի խնդրուածս, եւ դարձաւ սուրբն Ներսէս ի տեղի իւր:

 12:6 And the entire period that he was in detention, the people prayed for him with fasting. Xad led them in everything in no way inferior than their natural shepherd, Nerses, until his return, until the Lord fulfilled the requests of the land and returned the blessed Nerses to his place:

12:7 Զայնու ժամանակաւ Արշակ արքայ Հայոց ոչ ինչ կարի ի ճանապարհ Աստուծոյ գնացեալ լինէր. զի որչափ ի մատաղութեանն հասակին ըստ աստուածային իմաստութեանն գնացեալ լինէր, նոյնչափ յաւագութեանն ի լկնութեան ի շաղաշտութեան հատաւ. զոր զսուրբ հովիւն Խադ բազում անգամ յանդիմանեալ կշտամբէր, որում ոչ ինչ անսացեալ լինէր:

 12:7 In that period Arshak, the king of Armenia, did not traverse the path of God, to any great extent. Just as in his childhood he had acted in accordance with divine wisdom, so to the same extent as an adult he was mired in debauched lewdness. Although the blessed shepherd Xad reprimanded and reproached him many times, he was ignored:

12:8 Զայնու ժամանակաւ շինեաց իւր արքայն դաստակերտ մի ի հովիտն անուանեալ ի Կոգ գաւառի:

 12:8 In that period the king built himself a dastakert in the so-called valley of the district of Kog:

12:9 Եւ ետ հրաման ընդ ամենայն գաւառս իշխանութեան իւրոյ, եւ հրամայեաց կարգել քարոզ ընդ ամենայն տեղիս աշխարհացն հրապարակին իւրոյ. եւ ամենայն կողմանս գաւառաց իւրոց լի առնէր հրամանաւն արքունի, զի եթէ ոք ումեք ինչ պարտիցի, եթէ ոք ուրուք ուստեք ինչ վնասեալ իցէ, կամ ոք ումեք ինչ դատ պարտիցի, ամենեքեան եկեսցեն ի դաստակերտն շինեսցեն:

 12:9 He issued an order throughout all the districts of his authority and had it preached in every public place in his lands such that every place in his districts was full of the royal command, that if someone, anywhere, was guilty, or was liable to prosecution they might come to the dastakert and flourish:

12:10 Եթէ արիւնահան ոք իցէ, կամ վնաս ուրուք արարեալ իցէ, կամ զկին ուրուք տարեալ իցէ, կամ պարտապան իցէ, կամ ոք զուրուք կարասի ունիցի, կամ ոք յումեքէ երկիւղած ինչ իցէ, եւ եկեսցէ յայն տեղի, դատ եւ իրաւունք մի՛ լիցին:

 12:10 If they had shed blood, had committed a crime, had abducted a woman, or were guilty, had taken another’s wealth, or were afraid of anyone, and if they came to that place there would be no lawsuit or adjudication:

12:11 Իսկ եթէ ոք ումեք ինչ պարտիցի, եւ որում պարտիցին` եկեալ յայն տեղին, առանց դատի եւ իրաւանց կալցին եւ ի դուրս տարցեն:

 12:11 And if someone was in debt to someone else and the creditor came to that place, without trial or adjudication the creditor would be seized and expelled:

12:12 Իբրեւ ել հրաման յարքայէն, ժողովեցան այնուհետեւ յայն տեղի ամենայն գողք եւ աւազակք, արիւնահանք, սպանողք, սուտք եւ մարդելոյզք վնասակարք, գանձահատք, զրկողք, ստադատք, զրախօսք, զերծողք, յափշտակողք, ժլատք:

 12:12 When the royal command had gone forth, there assembled at that place all the thieves and brigands, shedders of blood, killers, liers and harmful seducers, stealers of treasures, dispossessors, false-testifiers, false accusers, plunderers, ravishers and covetous people:

12:13 Բազում վնասս վնասս առնէին, եւ անդր անկանէին. բազում կանայք զարս թողուին, եւ անդր անկանէին. բազում արք զիւրեանց կանայս թողուին, եւ զայլոյ կանայս առեալ` անդր անկանէին. բազում ծառայք զիւրեանց տերանց զգանձս ըմբռնեալ, փախուցեալք անդր անկանէին. բազում աւանդառուք զաւանդս լի զպահեստս բարձեալ, անդ անկանէին. գերփէին աւերէին զերկիրն ամենայն:

 12:13 They had worked many different crimes, and then fled there. Many women left their men and fled there; many men abandoned their women and fled there; they took other women and fled there; many servants seized the treasuries of their lords and fled there; many depositaries took reserves filled with deposits and fled there; they plundered and ruined the entire country:

12:14 Զի թէպէտ եւ կարի յոյժ բազմացաւ աղաղակն, դատ չկայր, եւ իրաւունք ումեք յարքունուստ ոչ ելանէին:

 12:14 Although the outcry was very great against it, there was no lawsuit, and the court did not defend anyone’s right:

12:15 Վասն այսորիկ ամենայն մարդ հառաչելով վայէին, եւ ասէին ի հաւանել բանիցն իւրեանց. այս բանք ըստ այսմ օրինակի պաշտէին, առ հասարակ ամենեցուն ասելով` թէ իրաւունք մեռան, եւ վասն այսորիկ ոչ գտանէին. այլ թէ էր, եւ կորուսեալ էին, ուր եւ էր ջանայաք խնդրէաք գտանէաք:

 12:15 Consequently, everyone was sighing and lamenting, saying: “Rights have died, and as a result cannot be found. If they had existed and were lost, we would search for them wherever possible and seek to find them:

12:16 Իսկ տեղին աւանանայր, քաղաքանայր. մեծացաւ բազմացաւ եւ ելից զհովիտն ամենայն:

 12:16 Now that place became an awan and a city and became so large that it filled the entire valley:

12:17 Ապա տայր հրաման արքայն Արշակ դնել անուն դաստակերտին յիւրակից անունն Արշակաւան. եւ շինեցին եւս անդ ապարանս արքունի:

 12:17 Then king Arshak ordered that the dastakert should be named after himself, Arshakawan. They also built a royal mansion there:

12:18 Եւ յայնմ հետէ ոչ ինչ երկնչէին ի տեառնէ ամենեւին. եւ ամենայն մարդ զրկեալ էր իրօքն այնոքիւք, եւ բազմաց կառաչ աղաղակի տրտնջելոյն յաճախեալ բազմանայր:

 12:18 After this, no one feared his lord at all. Everyone felt dispossession, and cries of sadness increased:

12:19 Վասն որոյ բազում անգամ ընդդիմանայր նմա եւ յանդիմանէր սուրբն Խադ եպիսկոպոսն. մանաւանդ յորժամ ստիպէին զնա, թէ ե՛կ ուղղեա սեղան յեկեղեցւոջն յաւանն յԱրշակաւանն:

 12:19 As a result of this, the blessed bishop Xad often reproached and reprimanded him, especially when Arshak pressured him to “Come, erect an altar in the church at the awan of Arshakawan:

12:20 Իսկ նա բազում անգամ կշտամբէր եւ յանդիմանէր զթագաւորն Արշակ եւ զամենայն մեծամեծս եւ ցիշխանս:

 12:20 But Xad frequently chided and reprimanded king Arshak and all the grandees and princes:

12:21 Բայց ես, ասէ, ետեղապահ եմ. եւ ոչ ինչ առանց այնորիկ, որ թողն զիս հայրն, ունիմ իշխանութիւն գործել ինչ:

 12:21 He note: “I am a locum tenens, and have no authority to do anything without my father Nerses who left me here:

12:22 Ապա կամեցեալ Արշակ թագաւորն պատուաւ եւ ագահութեամբ կարասոյն մեքենայիւ խաբել զսուրբ եպիսկոպոսն Խադ, բազում ոսկի եւ բազում գանձս արծաթոյ, եւ բազում նժոյգս զարքունական ձիոյ` արքունի օճառովք, ոսկիվարաւանդ ապրդմովն, տայր նմա. պատրել հաճել զմիտս նորա, յինքն յանգուցանել:

 12:22 But king Arshak wanted to capriciously deceive the blessed bishop Xad with honors and through greed for wealth. He gave him much gold, many treasures of silver, many steeds from the royal horses, with royal ornaments and silk worked with gold, to deceptively placate him and win him over:

12:23 Իսկ նա զկարասին, զոր առնոյր յարքայէն, յանդիման նորա աղքատաց բաշխէր. եւ զյանդիմանութիւնն ոչ ինչ թուլացուցանէր, մինչեւ հրամանն տայր հալածել զեպիսկոպոսն Խադ ի բանակէ անտի:

 12:23 But the wealth which Xad took from the king, in his presence, he distributed to the poor. Nor did he lessen the reprimands until the king ordered that the bishop Xad be expelled from the banak:

12:24 Իսկ նա ա՛ռ շրջել ընդ աշխարհն, կարգել եւ խրատել, ուսուցանել եւ դարմանել զաղքատսն, որպէս էր նմա յանձն արարեալ սրբոյն Ներսիսի, եւ իւր գնացեալ:

 12:24 Now Xad circulated throughout the land, arranging, advising, teaching and providing for the poor as the blessed Nerses had told him to:

12:25 Բազում նշանք եւ արուեստք եւ զօրութիւնք բժշկութիւնք հիւանդաց լինէին ի ձեռս նորա. բազում յոյժ առնէր սքանչելիս մեծամեծս:

 12:25 Many signs of powerful healing of the sick were done by his hands, and he accomplished very many very great miracles:

12:26 Բայց իբրեւ պաշտէր զաղքատսն, եւ սպառէր թափէր զամենայն յուրանս եւ զնորամանս եւ զմառանս գինւոյն, եւ զկարասս ամենայն մառանացն տայր բաշխել աղքատացն, երթայր յայլում աւուր տեսանէր լցեալ ինքնին իբրեւ ի հրամանէ Աստուծոյ. եւ դարձեալ օր ըստ օրէ մատակարարէր աղքատացն, եւ այնմ ստէպ ստէպ լցեալ լինէր:

 12:26 But as he aided the poor and emptied and spilled the new vessels and store-rooms of wine belonging to the apostates, dividing up all the vessels of the store-rooms among the poor, he would go the next day and see them all filled, as if by God’s command. Again, each day he would serve the poor, and the vessels were always refilled:

12:27 Այսպիսի սքանչելիք մեծամեծք լինէին ի ձեռն առնս այսորիկ. էր սա զարմանալի անուանի եւ հոյակապ ի մէջ ամենայն Հայոց. շրջէր խրատէր եւ ուսուցանէր զեկեղեցիս Հայոց ընդ ամենայն տեղիս իբրեւ զիւր վարդապետն զՆերսէս:

 12:27 Thus were the very great miracles accomplished by this man. He was wonderfully renowned and magnificent throughout all of Armenia. He circulated about advising and teaching the churches of Armenia, everywhere just like his vardapet Nerses:

12:28 Բայց ի ժամանակեան միոջ եկին գողք, եւ գողացան զեզինս եկեղեցւոյն սրբոյ զԽադայ եպիսկոպոսին, առին եւ գնացին:

 12:28 However, once thieves came and stole oxen belonging to the church of the blessed bishop Xad:

12:29 Իսկ ի միում աւուր աչք կուրացեալ եղեն գողոցն, եւ ինքեանք յանիմաստս առ խարխափս եկին ածին ի դուրս սրբոյն Խադայ զամենայն եզինսն:

 12:29 Now the next day the thieves’ eyes were blinded and they, without knowing it, gropingly came and brought all the oxen to the blessed Xad’s door:

12:30 Իսկ ինքն սուրբն Խադ ելեալ տեսանէր զնոսա, եւ գոհանայր զտեառնէ` որ այնչափ վերակացու եւ այցելու եղեւ հաւատացելոց իւրոց:

 12:30 Then the blessed Xad himself went outside and saw them, thanking the Lord Who had been so watchful as to visit His believers:

12:31 Կայր յաղօթս եպիսկոպոսն Խադ, եւ բժշկէր զաչս գողոցն. եւ հրաման տայր լուանալ զանձն նոցա, եւ դնէր ճաշ առաջի նոցա, եւ քաջ ուրախ առնէր զնոսա մեծապէս:

 12:31 Bishop Xad prayed and healed the thieves’ eyes. He ordered that they wash and he placed a meal before them, and greatly gladdened them:

12:32 Ապա օրհնէր զնոսա, եւ տայր նոցա զեզինսն` զոր իւրեանցն էր գողացեալ, եւ արձակէր զնոսա զիւրեանց ճանապարհն, եւ գնացին:

 12:32 He then blessed them, gave them the oxen they had stolen, and released them:

12:33 Այսպէս բազում համբերութիւնս յամենայն գործս իւր ցուցանէր, եւ բազում առնէր նշանս եւ զսքանչելիս:

 12:33 Thus, did he display great patience in all his affairs, working many signs and miracles. Xad had two daughters:

12:34 Եւ էին նորա երկու դստերք. եւ ետ զմինն Ասրկոյ ումեմն կին. զկնի աներոյն իւր` նա կալաւ զաթոռն Խադայ:

 12:34 He gave one of them in marriage to a certain Asurk who, after the death of his father-in-law, held the throne of Xad:
