1:0 Երրորդ Յեղանակ - ՎԱՍՆ ՄԻԱԲԱՆՈՒԹԵԱՆ ՍՈՒՐԲ ՈՒԽՏԻՆ ԵԿԵՂԵՑՒՈՅ:

 1:0 CHAPTER THREE - Concerning the Unity of the Holy Covenant of the Church:

1:1 Թէպէտ եւ ոչ իցեմք բաւական ասել զամենայն չարիսն, որ անցք անցին անդէն ի կարաւանին ընդ գունդն Հայոց, սակայն եւ ոչ լռել կամիմք՝ ծածկելով զվիշտս նեղութեանն. այլ ասասցուք փոքր ի շատէ, զի ձայնակիցք լիցուք այնոցիկ, որք դառնապէս զմեզ ողբային. զի եւ դու իբրեւ լուիցես՝ ոչ սակաւ արտասուս հեղուցուս ի վերայ ազգիս թշուառութեան:

 1:1 ALTHOUGH we are unable to mention all the evils which were inflicted on the Armenian contingent in the army, yet we do not wish to remain silent and hide their cruel afflictions. But we shall give a summary so that we may join our voices to those who bitterly lamented us, and so that you too, as you listen, may shed not a few tears over the misfortune of our nation:

1:2 Զի ահա անդէն ի մեծ բանակին Պարսից՝ յազգաց ազգաց որք էին հաւատացեալ ի սուրբ աւետարանն Քրիստոսի, իբրեւ տեսին զչար յանձնառութիւնն Հայոց, յոյժ հարան ի միտս իւրեանց, եւ կործանեցան անկանի վերայ դիմաց իւրեանց:

 1:2 For behold, in the great Persian camp, those of the various nations who were believers in Christ’s holy Gospel, when they saw the evil submission of the Armenians were sorely pained, collapsed, and fell on their faces:

1:3 Բազումք ի նոցանէ թաղծեալ ի սուգ ծանրութեան, հարեալ յոգիս եւ դառնացեալ յարտասուս, եկին եւ յանդիմանեցին զնախարարեանն, եւ յոյժ դսրովեցին զուխտ քահանայութեանն:

 1:3 Many of them, grieved in deep mourning, smitten in their souls, and with bitter tears, came and reproached the nobles and greatly blamed the clergy:

1:4 Զզուէին զամենեսեան եւ ասէին. «Զի՞ առնիցէք զսուրբ կտակարանսդ, եւ կամ յո՞ տանիցիք զսպաս տէրունեան սեղանոյն. մոռանայցէ՞ք արդեւք զհոգեւոր աւրհնութիւնսդ, եւ կամ լռեալ դադարիցէ՞ք ի մարգարէական ձայնիցդ:

 1:4 Execrating them all they note: “What will you do with your Holy Testaments or where will you take the vessels of the Lord’s altar? Will you really forget your spiritual blessings or remain impervious to the voices of the prophets:

1:5 Կափուցէք զաչս յընթերցուածոց, եւ խցէք զականջս ի լսելոյ. միթէ զմտացդ անմոռացութիւն ո՞չ յիշիցէք:

 1:5 You have shut your eyes to reading and closed your ears to hearing. Will you not recall what should be indelible in your minds:

1:6 Զի՞նչ առնիցէք զպատուիրեալսն ի Տեառնէ. Որ ուրասցի զիս առաջի մարդկան, յուրաստ եղէց եւ ես զնմանէ առաջի Հաւր իմոյ, որ յերկինս է, եւ հրեշտակաց սրբոց:

 1:6 What will you make of the commands from the Lord: ’Who denies me before men, him shall I too deny before my Father who is in heaven and before the holy angels? ’:

1:7 Վարդապետք էիք առաքելական քարոզութեանն. արդ աշակե՞րտք լինիցիք մոլար խաբէութեանն:

 1:7 You were teachers of the apostolic preaching; will you now become pupils of erring deceit:

1:8 Ուսուցիչք էիք ճշմարտութեանն, արդ ուսուցանիցէ՞ք զպատիր խաբէութիւն մոգաց:

 1:8 You were teachers of the truth; will you now teach the wily deceit of the magi:

1:9 Քարոզք էիք արարչական զաւրութեանն, արդ զտարերս աստուա՞ծս խոստովանիք:

 1:9 You were preachers of the creative power; do you now confess the elements of gods:

1:10 Յանդիմանիչք էիք ստութեան, արդ եւ քան զսուտն ստագո՞յնք լինիցիք:

 1:10 You were reprovers of falsehood; will you now become even more mendacious than falsehood:

1:11 Ի հուր եւ ի հոգի էիք մկրտեալք, արդ ի մոխիր եւ յաճի՞ւն թաթաւիցիք. կենդանի մարմնով եւ անմահ արեամբ էիք սնեալ, արդ ի ճենճե՞ր զոհից եւ ի շարաւս աղտեղի՞ս մրճոտիցիք:

 1:11 You were baptized in fire and spirit; will you now be immersed in ash and dust? You were nourished with the living flesh and immortal blood; will you now be blackened with the smoke of sacrifices and impure filth:

1:12 Տաճար էիք Հոգւոյն Սրբոյ, արդ զոհարան դիւա՞ց լինիցիք. Քրիստոսազգեացք էիք ի մանկութենէ, արդ մերկացեալք ի փառացն՝ դիւաբար արեգակա՞ն կաքաւիցէք:

 1:12 You were a temple of the Holy Spirit; will you now become an altar for demons? You had put on Christ from your youth; will you now be stripped of glory and dance like demons before the sun:

1:13 Ժառանգք էիք արքայութեանն, արդ անձամբ զանձինս արարէք ժառանգ գեհենին:

 1:13 You were heirs of the kingdom; you have now made yourselves heirs to hell:

1:14 Նոցա՛ է սպառնացեալ հուրն անշէջ, ընդէ՞ր դուք ընդ նոսա այրեցեալ տոչորեցայք. նոցա՛ պարարի որդն անմահ, իսկ արդ դուք պարարիցէք զմարմինս ձեր նմա ի կերակուր. խաւարն արտաքին նոցա՛ թանձրացեալ պահի, դուք լուսազգեստք՝ ընդէ՞ր յուղարկեցայք ընդ նոսա ի նոյն խաւար:

 1:14 It was they who were threatened with the unquenchable fire; why have you been burned and seared with them? For them the undying worm is being fattened; but now you have fattened your own bodies as food for it. The outer darkness is being kept impenetrable for them; why did you, clothed in light, accompany them to the same darkness:

1:15 Նոքա ի վաղնջուց հետէ էին իսկ կուրացեալք, դուք զիա՞րդ զկնի կուրացն կուրացարուք:

 1:15 They long since had become blind; why will you become blind following the blind:

1:16 Նոցա՛ էր փորեալ զխորխորատն, դուք ընդէ՞ր լցէք յառաջագոյն:

 1:16 They had dug the pit; why did you fill it in advance:

1:17 Ե՞րբ ուսանիցիք զբազմաթիւ անուանս աստուածոցն նոցա, այն որ չիք ուրեք ի միջի եւ ոչ մի:

 1:17 When will you learn the myriad names of their gods, of which not one exists anywhere:

1:18 Թեթեւացեալք ի ծանր բեռանց՝ անձամբ անձին առէք զբեռն ծանրութեան. ազատեալք ի ծառայութենէ՝ չարաչար մտէք յանազատելի ծառայութիւնն:

 1:18 Lightened of heavy burdens, you have taken up of your own accord a heavy burden; freed from servitude, you have perversely entered into inescapable bondage:

1:19 Եթէ գիտէիք եւ երեւէր ձեզ յայտնի, սուգ առին երկինք ի վերայ ձեր, եւ թաղծեցաւ երկիրս ի ներքոյ ոտից ձերոց:

 1:19 If only you knew and it was clear to you that heaven mourned for you and earth grieved beneath your feet:

1:20 Հրեշտակք ի վերուստ են ձեզ բարկացեալք, եւ ի յերկրէս մարտիրոսքն են ձեզ ցասուցեալք:

 1:20 The angels above have become angered with you, and from earth the martyrs have become furious at you:

1:21 Ողորմի՜մ, ողորմիմ սիրելեաց ձերոց, եւ բազում անգամ ողորմիմ անձանց ձերոց:

 1:21 I pity, I pity your loved ones, but more I pity your own selves:

1:22 Զի թէ մարդոյ փրկեալ էր զձեզ ի ծառայութենէ, եւ դուք անձամբ զանձինս այլում ի ծառայութիւն արկանէիք, ի մեծ բարկութիւն բրդէիք զառաջին տէրն ձեր. իսկ արդ զի՞նչ առնիցէք զաստուածասաստ հրամանն. Ես եմ Աստուած, եւ չիք այլ ոք բաց յինէն, եւ ոչ զկնի իմ այլ ոք լիցի Աստուած. Աստուած նախանձոտ եմ ես, հատուցանեմ զմեղս հարց յորդիս մինչեւ յեւթն դար:

 1:22 For if a man had saved you from servitude, and you then of your own accord put yourselves in servitude to another, you would provoke your first lord to great anger. But now how will you treat the divine command: ’I am God and there is no other beside me, nor will any other after me be God. I am a jealous God. I shall punish the sins of fathers on sons up to the seventh generation’:

1:23 Իսկ եթէ որդիքն արդարք՝ վասն հարցն մեղաց ընդունին զսատակումն, յոր ժամ ինքեանք որդիքն իսկ մեղիցեն, ո՞չ ահա միանգամայն զանձանց եւ զհարց տայցեն ի միասին:

 1:23 But if the just sons are subject to punishment for their fathers’ sins, when the sons themselves sin, will they not at one and the same time answer for both their own and their fathers’ sins:

1:24 Դո՛ւք էիք մեր ամուր պարիսպ ապաստանի. յորժամ աստի վտանգ հասանէր, առ ձեզ յանդորր ելանէաք. արդ մեծ ամուրդ այդ հիմն ի վեր տապալեցաւ:

 1:24 You were our strong wall of refuge; when danger approached, we went to you for safety. But now that great fortress has been destroyed to its foundations:

1:25 Դո՛ւք էիք մեր պարծանս առ թշնամիսն ճշմարտութեան, արդ դուք էք մեր նախատինք առ նոյն թշնամիս:

 1:25 You were our boast against the enemies of truth; but now you are our shame before those same enemies:
