2:1 Իսկ ի գալուստ ամին միւսոյ զաւր բազում կուտէր յոյժ, գումարտակ առնէր, զնոյն զաւր կոչէր, եւ եւս բազում քան զնոյն ասպատակ սփռեալ զկողմամբքն Ասորեստանի:

 2:1 Now at the start of the next year, King Xosrov assembled an extremely large number of troops, the same he had summoned previously and many more, and spread about raiding the Asorestan areas:

2:2 մանաւանդ զի եւ զաւրք Տաճկաց ի թիկունս եկեալ էին. աւար առեալ զերկիրն ամենայն՝ քաջութեամբ դառնային յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս:

 2:2 He did this especially since troops of the Tachiks Arabs had come to his aid. After looting the entire country, they valiantly returned to their own places:

2:3 Եւ ամս մետասան ստէպ ստէպ զայս աւրինակ աւար առեալ՝ աւերէին զամենայն երկիր սահմանացն, որ ընդ Պարսից թագաւորութեամբն եւ ընդ իշխանութեամբն էր:

 2:3 And so for eleven years, one year after the next, they looted and wrecked all the confines of the country under the kingship and rule of the Persians:

2:4 Իսկ իբրեւ զայն ամենայն չարիս ետես թագաւորն Պարսից, որ եկին հասին ի վերայ նորա՝ նեղեցաւ, տառապեցաւ, տագնապեցաւ, տարակուսեցաւ, վարանէր յանձն իւր:

 2:4 Now when the king of the Persians saw all these evils which had descended upon him, he became upset and was plunged into anxiety, doubt, and hesitation:

2:5 առ ինքն կոչէր զամենայն թագաւորս եւ զկուսակալս եւ զնախարարս եւ զզաւրավարս եւ զպետս եւ զիշխանս իւրոյ տէրութեանն. ի խորհուրդ մտանէին. աղաչէր զամենեսեան՝ հնարս ինչ մարթել խնդրել գտանել. ազգի ազգի պարգեւս խոստանայր:

 2:5 He summoned to himself all the kings, lieutenants [kusakals], lords, generals, chiefs [pets], and princes of his realm. They entered into deliberations and King Ardashir beseeched all of them to find some solutions, and he offered various gifts:

2:6 թերեւս ոք միայն գտցի, ասէ, որ զվրիժուց հատուցումն խնդրել մարթասցէ. յերկրորդական գահ իւրոյ տէրութեանն մատուցանել խոստանայր, թէ միայն նախանձու մեծի ձեռն արկեալ հատուսցէ ոք:

 2:6 He said that if only someone could be found to exact vengeance, he would promise to give him the second position [gah], (“throne,” “seat”) in his realm, if only someone would undertake to seek vengeance for the great grudge that he held:

2:7 բայց միայն աթոռովս ես ի վեր եղէց քան զնա, եթէ կարի յանարգաց ոք իցէ կամ ի պատուականաց. ազգի ազգի պատիւս եւ պարգեւս եւ վարձուց հատուցմունս շնորհել խոստանայր:

 2:7 I would be above him in rank only by reason of my throne, regardless if the avenger should derive from an undistinguished or a distinguished origin.” He promised as a reward to confer various kinds of honors and gifts:

2:8 Արդ՝ ոմն ի միջոյ խորհրդեանն գլխաւոր նահապետ էր Պարթեւաց տէրութեանն, որոյ անուն էր Անակ. յոտն կացեալ, ի մէջ անցեալ՝ յիւրմէ ազգէն իբրեւ ի թշնամւոյ վերայ խոստանայր վրէժ խնդրել:

 2:8 Now among the advisors there was a senior nahapet of the kingdom of the Parthians, whose name was Anak. Rising to his feet, Anak promised to take revenge on his own Arsacid clansman, as though on an enemy:

2:9 Խաւսել սկսաւ ընդ նմա եւ ասէ. «Եթէ միայն զայդ նախանձ խնդրեսցես միամտութեամբ՝ զբնութիւնն պարթեւական, զձեր սեփական Պալհաւն ի ձեզ դարձուցից:

 2:9 King Ardashir began talking to him and note: “If you just resolve this matter loyally, I will return to you your native Parthian land, your own Pahlaw property:

2:10 եւ քեզ թագ եդեալ փառաւորեցից, եւ երեւելի եւ փառաւոր ի թագաւորութեանս իմում արարից, եւ երկրորդ ինձ կոչեցից:

 2:10 Moreover, I will glorify you by putting a crown on your head and making you prominent and glorious in my realm. And I will designate you as the second to me in rank:

2:11 Պատասխանի ետ Պարթեւն եւ ասէ. «Զմնացորդս ազգի իմոյ կեցուսցես դու. այլ ես եւ եղբայր իմ հարազատ այսաւր հրաժարիմք ի քէն:

 2:11 The Parthian Anak replied: “Support the remainder of my clan while my true [harazat] brother and I will leave you today for Armenia:

2:12 Յայնմ ժամանակի հանդերձեցաւ կազմեցաւ Պարթեւն եղբարբն իւրով հանդերձ, ընտանեաւք կանամբք եւ որդւովք եւ ամենայն աղխիւ իւրեանց:

 2:12 Then the Parthian along with his brother organized with their families, women, and children, and all their belongings:

2:13 չու արարեալ յուղի անկեալ, դէտ ակն կալեալ ճանապարհացն՝ ելեալ երթայր հատուածի պատճառաւ ի կողմանս Հայոց, իբրեւ թէ ապստամբեալ իցէ յարքայէն Պարսից:

 2:13 They set out, watching the roads, arising and departing as though emigrating to the Armenian areas, as though they had revolted against the king of the Persians:

2:14 Եկեալ յանդիման եղեւ թագաւորին Խոսրովու յՈւտի գաւառի, ի Խաղխաղ քաղաքի, ի ձմերոցս արքայութեանն Հայոց:

 2:14 They came to King Xosrov in the district of Uti, in the city of Xaghxagh, the winter residence of the Armenian monarchy:

2:15 Իբրեւ ետես թագաւորն Հայոց՝ ցնծացեալ ել ընդ առաջ նորա եւ մեծաւ խնդութեամբ ընկալաւ զնա. մանաւանդ իբրեւ կեղծաւորութեամբ եւ դաւով սկսաւ խաւսել ընդ նմա եւ զիւրոյ գալոյն հաւատարմութիւն ցուցանել:

 2:15 As soon as the king of the Armenians saw this, he delightedly went before him, receiving him with great joy, especially since Anak began speaking with him falsely and deceitfully, demonstrating the believability of his arrival:

2:16 Վանս այնորիկ եկի ես առ քեզ, ասէ, զի հասարակ զհասարակաց վրէժ խնդրել մարթասցուք:

 2:16 Anak note: “It was for this reason that I came to you, so that we might share in exacting vengeance:

2:17 Արդ՝ իբրեւ ետես թագաւորն զայրն, զի դիմեալ եկեալ էր առ նա ամենայն ընտանեաւքն հանդերձ, եւ մտերմութեամբ հաւատաց ի նա:

 2:17 Now when the king saw this man who had come to him with his entire family, he regarded him as trustworthy and believed him:

2:18 յայնժամ տայր նմա պատիւ ըստ աւրինաց թագաւորաց, եւ հանէր նստուցանէր զնա յերկրորդ աթոռ թագաւորութեանն. եւ զամենայն ժամանակս ձմերայնոյն ուրախութեամբ զաւուրս ցրտաշունչ հողմաշունչ սառնամանեացն անցուցանէին:

 2:18 Then he gave him an honor or, “diadem,” [pativ] of a royal kind and seated him on the second throne of the realm by rank. They joyously passed the entire period of winter, those cold days of blustery winds and ice:

2:19 Իսկ իբրեւ եկին հասին աւուրք ջերոտ հարաւահողմն գարուն դրանցն բանալոյ՝ համբարձաւ թագաւորն ի կողմանցն յայնցանէ. եկին իջին յԱյրարատ գաւառ, ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաք:

 2:19 The king arose and left those areas when the warm days of the southern winds arrived to open the gates of spring. The royal retinue came and descended into the district of Ayrarat, going to the city of Vagharshapat:

2:20 ի մինչդեռ ուրախութեամբ հանգուցեալ էին, ի միտ արկեալ թագաւորին՝ գումարտակ առնէր՝ անդրէն արշաւել ի կողմանս Պարսից:

 2:20 While they were happily resting, the king decided to muster troops, with the aim of invading Persia again:

2:21 Իբրեւ զայն լսէր Պարթեւն՝ զերդումն ուխտին յիշէր որ ընդ Պարսից արքային ուխտեալ էր:

 2:21 As soon as the Parthian Anak heard this, he recalled the oath of the compact he had made with the king of the Persians:

2:22 Նա եւ զխոստմունսն յիշէր զպարգեւացն, եւ ի բուն աշխարհն փափագէր որ Պահլաւն կոչէր, եւ վատ խորհուրդ ի միտ արկանէր. առնոյր զթագաւորն մեկուսի նա եւ եղբայր իւր հարազատ՝ իբրեւ ի պատճառս ինչ զբաւսանաց, իբրեւ խորհուրդ ինչ խորհել ընդ նմա:

 2:22 He also remembered the promises of gifts, and he longed for his native land called Pahlaw. And then he hatched an evil scheme. He and his brother took the king aside - as though for some recreation, as though he wanted to deliberate with him on some matter:

2:23 եւ զսուսերսն պողովատիկս թերաքամեալս ունէին. յանկարծ յեղակարծումն ժամանակի զէնս վերացուցեալ՝ զթագաւորն դիաթաւալ կացուցեալ յերկիր կործանէին:

 2:23 They had their steel swords partly unsheathed. Then, suddenly and unexpectedly, they raised their weapons and struck the king dead. He fell to the ground, a corpse:

2:24 Անդուստ ուստեմն իրազգած եղեալ իրաց որ եղեն՝ գոյժ աղաղակի ամբոխին թանձրանայր. մինչ այս մինչ այն՝ նոքա հեծեալ յիւրաքանչիւր երիվարս փախստական լինէին:

 2:24 Once these events became known, the crowd raised a lament. However, the killers by then had each mounted his horse and fled:

2:25 Իսկ իբրեւ զայն գիտացին նախարարք հայակոյտ զաւրացն՝ գունդ գունդ հատանէին, զկնի լինէին:

 2:25 When the naxarars of the Armenian troops learned about this, they split into brigades and went in pursuit:

2:26 ոմանք ընդ ցամաքն աճապարեալ, հասանել ի խելս կամրջացն առ դրունս Արտաշատ քաղաքի:

 2:26 Some hurried by land and reached the head of the bridge near the gates of the city of Artashat:

2:27 Զի գետն Երասխ յարուցեալ գայր լի դարիւ եւ դարիւ, սառնահալ, ջրակուտակ, ձիւնասոյզ, ձիւնախաղաղ բազմութեամբն յաւուրս իւրոյ պղտորութեանն:

 2:27 The Arax River, which had risen up, coursed along swollen with blocks of ice and mounds of melting snow in these days of its flooding:

2:28 Կէսքն անցեալ ընդ կամուրջն Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի, զոր եւ կամուրջ Մեծամաւրի կոչեն՝ աճապարէին հասանել յառաջ մի ի խելս կամրջին Արտաշատու:

 2:28 Half of the pursuers crossed the bridge of the city of Vagharshapat, which is called Metsamor bridge, hurrying to get in advance of the fugitives at the head of the Artashat bridge:

2:29 Ի կիրճս ճանապարհացն արգելին զնոսա, ի մէջ արարեալ զնոսա՝ ի Տափերական կամրջացն գետավէժ առնէին զնոսա:

 2:29 In a narrow part of the road, the naxarars stopped them, and surrounded them. They hurled the fugitives into the river from the Taperakan bridge:

2:30 Եւ ինքեանք անդրէն դարձեալ՝ վայիւք, ճչովք եւ ողբովք, եւ ամենայն երկիրն ժողովեալ զթագաւորն աշխարէին:

 2:30 And then they turned back sighing, crying out, and lamenting, and the entire country gathered and mourned the king:

2:31 Եւ մինչ դեռ ջերմ ոգիքն ի ծոցոյն չեւ էին թափեալ, եւ շունչ վախճանին չեւ էր հասեալ՝ հրաման տայր զազգատոհմն սատակել:

 2:31 Now King Xosrov, before the warm spirit of life had quit his bosom, before he had breathed his last, issued an order that the clan of Anak should be exterminated:

2:32 Յայնժամ սկսան սատակել եւ կոտորել. մինչեւ ոչ թողին յերիտասարդաց մինչեւ յայն՝ որ բնաւ զաջ եւ զձախ ոչ գիտէր. նաեւ զիգական տոհմն մաշէին ի սուր սուսերի իւրեանց:

 2:32 Then the naxarars began to kill and destroy, not sparing even the young who still did not know their right hand from their left. Similarly, the female side of the clan was put to their swords:

2:33 Բայց միայն երկուս մանկունս փոքրկունս յորդւոցն Պարթեւին պրծեալ ոմն ապրեցուցանէր ի ձեռն դայեկաց ուրումն. զմին ի կողմանս Պարսից, եւ զմին ի կողմանս Յունաց առեալ փախչէին:

 2:33 Only two small children of Anak the Parthian were spirited away by someone and saved by means of their [dayeaks] (nurses, tutors, guardians), one fleeing to the Persian areas, and the other, to the Greek Byzantine areas:
