2:26 Համբերութեամբ ճգնէին եւ մեծաւ առաքինութեամբ տանէին զքաջ նահատակութիւնն:

 2:26 Patiently they suffered, and very bravely they endured their heroic struggle:

2:27 Զի եթէ ոչ բացաւ աչաւք տեսանէին զյոյսն խնդալից, եւ ոչ կարէին իսկ գործել զայնպիսի մեծ առաքինութիւն:

 2:27 But had they not seen with open eyes the joyous hope, they would not have been able to act with such great virtue:

2:28 Քանզի բազումք յազգէ ի մեծ նախարարացն էին, եւ եղբարք եւ որդիք եւ դստերք, հանդերձ ամենայն սիրելեաւք իւրեանց ի մէջ ամրական վայրացն, ոմանք յանլոյս երկիրն Խաղտեաց, եւ այլ բազումք ի կողմանս հարաւոյ՝ յանմատոյց ամուրսն Տմորեաց, եւ կէսքն ի թանձրախիտ մայրիսն Արձախոյ, եւ այլ ոմանք անդէն ի միջոց աշխարհին բռնացան ի վերայ բազում ամրոցացն:

 2:28 Many were from the families of the great nobility—brothers, sons, and daughters with all their friends in fortified places: some in the benighted land of Khaltik, many others in the South in the inaccessible strongholds of Tmorik some in the thick forests of Ardzakh, and yet others in the center of the country had seized control of many fortresses:

2:29 Եւ ամենեքին մեծաւ համբերութեամբ տանէին զբազում նեղութիւնն վասն սիրոյն Քրիստոսի, եւ զայս միայն աղաչելով խնդրէին յԱստուծոյ, մի՛ տեսանել նոցա զաւեր սուրբ եկեղեցեաց:

 2:29 They all endured with great patience their many tribulations for the love of Christ. This only did they beg of God—that they might not see the devastation of the holy churches:

2:30 Այլ որպէս ցուցաք բազում անգամ զամբարշտին չարութիւն, յորդորէր եւ ստիպէր զզաւրսն Պարսից ի մաւտաւոր կողմանց աշխարհին, զի հրամանաւ արքունի զաւր եկեսցէ յաւգնականութիւն նոցա:

 2:30 But just as we have often shown the impious one’s iniquity, so again now he urged and pressed the Persian army in the neighboring parts of the country to come in force to their aid by royal command:

2:31 Եւ հասեալ բազում այրուձի՝ յաւելոյր ի թիւ անկելոցն, եւ լինէր գունդ բազմութեան իբրեւ զառաջինն:

 2:31 Many cavalry arrived, making up the numbers of the fallen, so that the army was as numerous as before:

2:32 Եւ յառաջ խաղային ի միջոց աշխարհին, մարտ եդեալ կռուէին ընդ մեծ ամուրս Կապոյտ լերինն:

 2:32 They advanced to the center of the country and attacked the large fortress of the Blue Mountain:

2:33 Իսկ որ ի ներքսն էին, քաջութեամբ մարտուցեալ հարկանէին զբազումս ի գնդէն Պարսից, եւ զմնացեալսն փախստական ի բանակն արկանէին:

 2:33 But the defenders valiantly resisted, struck down many of the Persian troops, and threw the survivors back in flight to their camp:

2:34 Իսկ նոքա դարձեալ յողոքանս մատուցեալ՝ նուաճել խաբէութեամբ կամէին:

 2:34 But they (the Persians) resorted to soft words, wishing to subdue them by deceit:

2:35 Իբրեւ ոչ ոք հաւատաց իջանել առ նոսա, զի մի՛ մատնեսցին չարաչար ի ձեռս թշնամեացն, սակայն վասն երդմանցն հարկ եղեւ քահանայի մի իջանել առ նոսա, որում անունն էր Արշէն:

 2:35 Although no one had the confidence to go down to them lest they be cruelly betrayed into the enemies’ hands, yet because of their oaths a priest, whose name was Arshen, was constrained to go down to them:

2:36 Խաւսէր ընդ նոսա յաղերս ընտանութեամբ, եւ ցուցանէր զանվնաս փախուստ անմեղացն, արկանէր գութ առաջի ուրացելոյն Վասակայ, եւ պաղատելով յիշեցուցանէր նմա զառաջին կարգ ուխտին քրիստոնէութեան, զի թերեւս սակաւիկ մի քաղցրասցի յանհնարին դառնութենէն:

 2:36 He parleyed with them in an appealing and friendly way, indicating that the flight of the innocent was harmless. He entreated the apostate Vasak and begged him to remember his earlier allegiance to the Christian covenant, hoping he might soften a little from his terrible cruelty:

2:37 Այլ նա ոչ ինչ լուաւ եւ անսաց բազում բանիցն նորա, կապեաց եւ խաղացոյց զերանելին եւ որք ընդ նմա իջեալ էին:

 2:37 But he did not listen and paid no heed to his words. He bound and sent off the blessed man and those who had gone down with him:

2:38 Մանաւանդ իբրեւ ետես, եթէ երթայ զաւրավարն զհետ խրատու կամաց նորա, սկսաւ այնուհետեւ ի բազում տեղիս արձակել զասպատակաւորս, եւ զոր արտաքոյ քան զամուրսն գտանէին զբազմութիւն մարդկանն, վարեցին ի գերութիւն. եւ ղամբար ի ձեռն առեալ հրձիգ առնէին զբազում տեղիս:

 2:38 More particularly, when he saw what the commander of the fort was following his suggestions, he then began to send out marauders; the numerous people they found outside the fortress they led into captivity, and torch in hand they set fire to many places:

2:39 Իսկ որք էին յամուրս Տմորեաց, իբրեւ լուան զայս ամենայն չարիս, զոր գործեցին զաւրքն արքունի, ոչինչ շահ աւգտի համարէին զկեալն ի մէջ ամրականացն:

 2:39 Now when those in the fortresses of Tmorik heard of all the calamities wrought by the royal army, they reckoned there was no advantage in living inside the fortifications:

2:40 Քաջութեամբ ելեալ յարձակեցան աւգնականութեամբ ամրականացն, եւ հասեալ ի մաւտաւոր աշխարհն Պարսկաց, յանխնայ կոտորելով՝ նախճիրս արեան գործէին, եւ զմնացեալսն գերի առեալ տանէին, եւ անդէն յամուրսն արկանէին, եւ զշինուածսն աշխարհին ղամբար ի ձեռն առեալ հրոյ ճարակ տային:

 2:40 They bravely went out on the attack with the help of the garrison; reaching the neighboring part of Persia they slaughtered the inhabitants mercilessly and made a bloody carnage. The survivors they took captive and imprisoned in the local fortresses, and the buildings of the country they burned down, torch in hand:

2:41 Դարձեալ եւ որք էին ի լերինս Խաղտեաց, իբրեւ տեսին եթէ յանդգնաբար զաւրքն Պարսկաց յաներկեւղս իջանեն յամուրս աշխարհին Հայոց, յարձակեցան եւ նոքա մեծաւ զաւրութեամբ ի ձորագաւառն Տայոց:

 2:41 Likewise, when those in the mountains of Khaltik saw that the Persian army was fearlessly daring to descend on the fortresses of Armenia, in great strength they attacked the valley of Tayk:

2:42 Եւ գտին անդ գունդ բազում ի զաւրացն արքունի, որ գերի առնուլ կամէին զամրականս աշխարհին. դարձեալ եւ կարծէին եւս, եթէ գանձք նախարարացն անդ իցեն, վասն այնորիկ եւ յանխնայ յուզէին զվայրսն:

 2:42 There they found a large detachment of royal troops who were intending to take captive the garrisons of the fortresses of the country and who were searching the area mercilessly, since they thought that the nobles’ treasures were there:

2:43 Նա եւ տեսին եւս անդ ի գեւղս երկուս, որ զեկեղեցիսն այրեցեալ էր. առաւել եւս վասն այնր ի նախանձ բարկութեան բրդեցան:

 2:43 Now when the Armenians also saw that the churches in two villages had been set on fire, they were goaded into even greater fury:

2:44 Յարձակեցան, հարան ի դիմի միմեանց, եւ կամակարութեամբ յաղթեալ, բեկեալ արկին զզաւրութիւն գնդին Պարսից, եւ կոտորեցին զբազումս ի նոցանէ, եւ զմնացեալսն փախստական հանէին յաշխարհէն:

 2:44 They rushed to attack, and winning a decisive victory, broke the strength of the Persian troops, slaughtered many of them, and expelled the survivors in flight from the country:

2:45 Եւ յայնչափ յանդուգն յարձակմանէն՝ միայն երանելին Հմայեակ, եղբայր սպարապետին Հայոց Վարդանայ, յանխնայ քաջութեամբ մարտուցեալ՝ կատարեցաւ նահատակութեամբ ի վերայ սուրբ ուխտին միաբանութեան:

 2:45 From this audacious attack only the blessed Hmayeak, brother of the Armenian general Vardan, fighting with uncompromising bravery, was heroically martyred for the unity of the holy covenant:

2:46 Եւ այլքն ամենայն ողջանդամ ապրեալք երթային զհետ փախստականին:

 2:46 All the others escaped unscathed and pursued the fugitives:

2:47 Եւ իբրեւ այս այսպէս կատարեցաւ, դադարեցին զաւրք թագաւորին խառնամուխ լինել յամենայն տեղիս անխտրութեամբ, եւ եւս առաւել ձեռնպահ լինել եկեղեցեացն:

 2:47 After this outcome, the king’s troops ceased occupying every place indiscriminately or seizing any more churches:

2:48 Դարձեալ միւսանգամ անդրէն հարցանել սկսան յարքունիսն:

 2:48 Once more they began to ask the court for orders:

2:49 Նա եւ որ յԱրձախայ մայրիսն անկեալքն էին փախստականք, ոչ ինչ լռեալ դադարեցին խաղաղութեամբ. այլ հանապազ յղէին յաշխարհն Հոնաց, շարժէին եւ յորդորէին զգունդն Հոնաց, եւ յիշեցուցանէին նոցա զուխտն, զոր եդեալ էր ընդ Հայս եւ անսուտ երդմամբ հաստատեալ:

 2:49 Nor did those who had fled for refuge to the forests of Ardzakh remain quiet and peaceful, but they continually sent to the land of the Huns, urging and exhorting the Hun army and reminding them of the pact which they had made with Armenia and confirmed with a solemn oath:

2:50 Հաճոյ թուէր բազմաց ի նոցանէ լսել զբանսն քաղցրութեամբ:

 2:50 Many of them were pleased to hear these words of flattery:
