27:0 Յաղագս պայազատութեան Աշոտոյ որդւոյ Սմբատայ, եւ դարձի նախարարացն Հայոց ի գերութենէ:

 27:0 The Succession of Ashot, Son of Smbat, and the Return of the Armenian Naxarars from Captivity:

27:1 Յայսմ հետէ ապա եթէ թեթեւ թուեսցի քեզ զառ ի ծերունեացն անցեալ բան ի պարզագունիցն չափաբերապէս հանդիպեցայց:

 27:1 Henceforth, if it should please you, when narrating about the old men, I shall touch upon the simpler (events) in a limited way:

27:2 վասն զի հաճեցաւ բանս ոչ երկրորդել միւսանգամ զհետեւանս զրուցաց Շապհոյ Բագրատունւոյ եւ մերումս ժամանակի պատմագրի, որ յայտապատում իսկ արարեալ է զրոյցս պայազատութեան որդւոյ Աշոտոյ սպարապետին Սմբատայ զիշխանական պատմութիւնն, եւ զթագաւորացն զհանգամանացն զկարգս, եւ կամ զդարձ գերելոցն ի Բուխայէ զՀայաստանեայցս իշխանաց եւ նախարարաց յիւրաքանչիւրն սեպհական իշխանութիւնս ածեալ կացեալ հաստատեալ:

 27:2 For it does not seem expedient to duplicate the narrative of Shapuh Bagratuni, a historian of our own times, who has given a precise account of the succession of Ashot, son of the sparapet Smbat, that is to say, a history of his years as prince, the circumstances of his coronation, as well as the return of the Armenian princes and naxarars taken captive by Bugha, and the restoration to each one of his own realm:

27:3 եւ թէ ո՛յք ի նոցանէ հոյակապք եւ հարուստք եւ ուժեղակք ընդդէմ հակառակորդաց հինից գտան. եւ կամ ո՛յք յումեքէ եղեն հարստահարեալք, եւ կամ զվախճան նոցա յիւրաքանչիւրումն տեղ:

 27:3 He also has written on those who withstood the enemy troops with amazing fortitude, as well as on who oppressed whom, and where each one met his death:

27:4 Զի թէպէտ ստուգութիւն սահմանական բանի բացատրութեան եւ զբոլորովին բաժանումն ապացուցից ոչ կարացեալ ըստ քերթողական հրահանգացն համառօտաբար ընձեռել. սակայն ըստ իւրումն ժամանակի ընտանի գոլով նորա զրուցացն ամենայնի՝ գեղջուկ բանիւ բաւական քեզ տայ պատճառս տեղեկութեան:

 27:4 Although he was unable to present comprehensively the truth in final form, or to give briefly a complete analysis of the evidence in accordance with the rules of rhetoric, yet, he is able to give you sufficient information in the vernacular (geghjuk baniw) since he was well aware of events during his own time:

27:5 Արդ այսպէս ես աստանօր զբովանդակն ի նա թողացուցեալ՝ եւ որ ինչ հարկաւորաբար այժմ ինչ պիտոյ է ճառիս պատմութիւն, զայն եւեթ համառօտ քեզ ընձեռութիւն առնելով, փորձեցայց սակաւուք իբր ներածութեան եղանակաւ:

 27:5 Now, leaving the complete narrative to him, I shall draw only what is necessary for the sequence of my history, and shall attempt to present you with an introductory summary:

27:6 որպէս վերագոյն ասացաւ, ի մանկութենէ մինչեւ ցերեւոյթս երիտասարդութեանն զԱշոտոյ՝ որդւոյ Սմբատայ սպարապետի, զզօրութիւնս եւ զքաջութիւնս եւ զպատերազմունս եւ զհրոսմունս յայլս եւ զայլոց եւս ի նա՝ բաւական բերցի քեզ առ ի Շապհոյ պատմեալքն:

 27:6 As has already been said, the History of Shapuh gives a sufficient account of the might, bravery, wars, expeditions and attacks of Ashot, son of the sparapet Smbat, against others and those of others against him, from the time of his youth to the time when he was a young man:

27:7 Իսկ յորժամ փոխանակ Սմբատայ հօր իւրոյ պայազատէ զսպարապետութիւն Հայոց, գրեթէ ամենեցուն քան զնա նախագունիցն վեհագոյն ճանաչիւր. վասն զի ընկալեալ զմեծարանս՝ ի բաց արհամարհէր զանարգանս եւ միշտ ի հրահանգս բարւոյ կրթութեան զինքն վարժէր, եւ բարի ազդումն իւրոյ հոգւոյն տայր՝ ընդ ամենեսեան կալեալ սերտ սէր. եւ ոչ ի հակառակութիւնս ինչ կամ ի կռիւս ընդ թշնամիսն մաքառեալ, քան թէ բարեզգեաց բանիւք եւ բարի օճանաւ ածեալ զնոսա յուղղութիւն եւ ի կամս իւր:

 27:7 Upon his succession to the sparapetut’iwn of Armenia in place of his father, Ashot was given greater recognition than almost all of his predecessors, because he accepted honors and rejected insults. Always engaged in beneficient acts, and forming close friendships with everyone through the goodness of his heart, he never fought against his enemies in battle, but rather turned them to righteousness by means of kind words, and brought them to his will by well taken measures:

27:8 Իսկ զպաճարանս սնոտի շահուց վնաս իւր վարկեալ եւ առատաձեռն առ ամենեսեան գտեալ՝ յինքն զբազմաց միտս յանգուցանէր սիրալիր սրտիւ, որպէս զի յայսմ սակի ամենեքեան իսկ նմա հաճեալ հաւանեալ էին:

 27:8 Considering the acquisition of vain profits as harmful, he was generous toward all people, and won over the hearts of many in friendship, so that all admired him for this:

27:9 Եւ այսպէս ապա զկարգ սպարապետութեան քաղաքավարեալ՝ մինչեւ համբաւ բարւոյն ի դուռն արքունի հասանէր:

 27:9 In this manner he carried out his duties as sparapet, until the fame of his virtue reached the royal court:

27:10 Ապա ոստիկան ոմն ի Հայս առաքեալ, որ ԱլիԱրմանի անուանիւր՝ ըստ հրամանի ամիրապետին իշխան իշխանացս Հայոց զնա կացուցանէր, բազում զզգեստիւք եւ արքունական պատուով ճոխացուցեալ՝ ի նա հաւատալով զսակս Հայոց եւ զամենայն բեկար արքունի:

 27:10 Subsequently, a governor named ’Ali Armani was sent to Armenia; he set Ashot as presiding prince of Armenia in accordance with the orders of the caliph, and investing him with many robes as well as royal insignia, entrusted him with the taxes (sak) of Armenia and all the royal bekar:

27:11 Եւ այսպէս պատուականագոյն եւ առաջին նա գտեալ եղեւ քան զամենայն նախարարութիւնս Հայոց. եւ ամենեքեան դաշինս ընդ նմա դնէին՝ որպէս արդարեւ ընդ թագաւորական զարմի:

 27:11 Thus, he became first and foremost among the Armenian naxarars, all of whom made treaties with him, as if with a true scion of royalty:

27:12 Այլ եւ ի մտի ամենեցուն եդեալ, զի թէ դէպ ինչ պիտոյից գտցի՝ նաեւ ի տոհմ իւր արժանի լիցին մատչել ի թագաւորութեան ցեղս՝ զնոսա որոշել յայլոց նախարարութեան ցեղից:

 27:12 Whenever a suitable occasion presented itself, all of them likewise resolved to become worthy of being related to his house (through marriage), and to be distinguished from the other naxarar houses, as members of the royal family:

27:13 Բայց զայսու ժամանակաւ ահագին իմն շարժմանց եղելոց ի Դվին քաղաքի, բազում սասանութիւնս եւ փլուզմունս տանց եւ պարսպաց եւ ապարանից լինէր, եւ առ հասարակ քանդումն եւ դղրդումն առնոյր քաղաքն. այլ եւ մահ յոլովից մարդկան ի վերայ հասանէր. եւ այնպէս ահագին իմն լինէր վտանգ տագնապին՝ մինչեւ ոչ ոք մնալ ընդ յարկաւ, այլ ի հրապարակս եւ ի փողոցս ելեալ հաշեալ հառաչէին:

 27:13 At this time, a severe earthquake in the city of Dvin wrought great damage in the houses, city walls and palaces. Desolation and tremors filled the city in general, and caused many people to perish. The fear of disaster was so immense, that no one remained under a roof, but lamenting their hardships they all fled to the market places and the streets:

27:14 Իսկ ցրտաշունչ սառնամանիք ձմեռայնւոյն առաւել բերէր զլքացումն հեծութեան, զի յոլովք մսեալք եւ ծայրատեալք լինէին:

 27:14 The stinging frost of winter augmented their distress, so that many suffered frostbite from the cold:

27:15 Իսկ սուրբ հայրապետն Զաքարիա ուժգին աղօթիւք եւ պաղատանօք մշտնջենամռունչ եւ աղերսալի աղօթս առ բարեգութն Աստուած մատուցանէր, եւ երկնային ազդեցութեամբն ի բաց բառնայր զաստուածասաստ բարկութիւնն՝ անվնաս զեկեղեցի Քրիստոսի պահեալ ի բազմաբեր ցասմանէ վտանգին:

 27:15 The blessed patriarch Zak’aria offered powerful prayers to all merciful God with everlasting supplications and entreating solicitations and through divine ordinance he warded off the wrathful scourge of God, so that the Church of Christ remained undamaged from the immense severity of the peril:

27:16 Բայց իշխանք եւ նախարարք, որք ըմբռնեալք գերեցան ի Բուխայէ՝ զայսու ժամանակաւ մի ըստ միոջէ ի կարգ անկեալ չուէին յաշխարհ տէրութեան իւրեանց եւ ի սեպհականութիւնս եւ ի տունս:

 27:16 About this time, the princes and naxarars of Armenia, who had been taken captive by Bugha, began to return gradually to their lands and homes one after the other:

27:17 եւ ապա մերկացեալ յանձանց իւրեանց զակամայ ուսմունս պիղծ օրինացն Մահմէտի՝ զքրիստոսաւանդ օրէնս հայրենիս առ հասարակ բարձրացուցեալ բերէին յանձինս իւրեանց, ոչ ի ծածուկ երկիւղիւ ինչ՝ այլ իբրեւ ի վերայ բարձր տանեաց քարոզէին զՔրիստոսի աստուածպաշտութիւնն:

 27:17 Then, freeing themselves from the foul teachings of Muhammad, which had been imposed on them much against their will, they embraced with exaltation their paternal religion given by Christ, and professed the worship of Christ not in secret with fear, but seemingly from the house tops:

27:18 Ընդ որս հաճեալ Տէրն՝ բնակեցոյց յուսով զնոսա, յորում եւ օրհնութեամբ Տեառնն օրհնեցան եւ նովիմբ գովեցան. հերկեցին հերկս եւ ո՛չ ի վերայ փշոց: Եւ ապա ձայն խրախճանաց ցնծացելոց ի յարկս նոցա լինէր՝ եւ ձայն հարսին եւ փեսայի:

 27:18 The Lord was pleased, and made them live in hope, for which they were blessed and praised by Him. They broke up their fallow ground, but did not sow among thorns. Subsequently, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bride and the voice of the bridegroom were heard under their roofs:

27:19 Ծնան որդիս եւ արարին պտուղ, եւ բնակեցան իւրաքանչիւրօք ի ժառանգութեան իւրեանց: Եւ այց արար Տէր նոցա եւ աջողեաց ի բարութիւնս:

 27:19 They begot children and produced fruit. Each one lived on his own land and the Lord visited them and blessed them with good things:
