83:0 Եւ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան դարձեալ ի կոտորածէ թշնամեացն` երթեալ հանգչէր զմնացեալ մասն ի գիշերոյն յՈղին գեղջն, զոր Շտեայ անուանեն, ի գոմս տեղեացն, մինչեւ յառաւաւտուն ծագել. եւ ի ծագել լուսոյն` երթեալ բանակէր ի գիւղն Շտէոյ:

 83:0 Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, left the slaughter of the enemy and went to spend the remainder of the night at the village of Oghin called Shte’, in the stables:

83:1 Եւ մինչ կամեցեալ հանգչել առ վայր մի զաւրացն Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի ի ծանրութենէ գիշերոյն աշխատութեանց` զաչս ի վեր առեալ տեսանէին, եւ ահա հասեալ կայր ի վերայ նոցա զաւրագլուխն Պարսից Շապուհ. զայրագնեալ սրտիւ մռմռայր իբրեւ զգազան:

 83:1 At daybreak he went and encamped at Shte’ village. Just as the Armenian troops of Vahan Mamikonean wanted to rest awhile from the weight of the evening’s labors, they raised their eyes and who should they see but the Iranian military commander, Shapuh, coming against them, roaring like a wild beast with an enraged heart:

83:2 Վասն զի առաւել քան զամենայն աւուրց` ա՛յն գիշերոյն վնասք չարութեան առաւել թուէր նմա եւ կարեւոր. որ եղեւն իսկ արդարեւ այնպէս, այլ ոչ ինչ նման առաջիկայ մեծ բեկմանն, զոր առժամայն էր տեսանելոց եւ ի սպառ բեկանելոց:

 83:2 For the wicked injuries of that particular night had seemed more and more serious than those (inflicted) on all previous days. And indeed, this was so, since nothing done previously resembled the great carnage which had thoroughly broken (the Iranians) and could now be observed:

83:3 Եւ տեսեալ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի զյանկարծահաս դիմեցմունս զաւրագլխին Պարսկաց Շապհոյ ամենայն բազմութեամբ զաւրուն ի վերայ նոցա, թէպէտ եւ անպատրաստ տեսանէր զիւր գունդն ի ժամուն եւ կամ ի նուազս, ըստ սաստկութեան թշնամեաց զաւրուն` սակայն զանգիտէր եւ բնաւ իսկ ոչ. այլ հրաման տուեալ` փութանակի կազմէր որքան իսկ էին. ի ձայն բարձր գոչէր առիւծաբար, ասելով, թէ:

 83:3 Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, saw the unexpected attack of the Iranian military commander, Shapuh, and all of the multitude of troops against them. Although he saw that his brigade at the time was unprepared and fewer compared to the enemy’s mighty force, nonetheless, he overlooked nothing. Giving the order, he quickly assembled however many men he had. Then, like a lion, he bellowed:

83:4 Մարդոյ հաւատացելոյ միում յերկուց վրիպել անհնար է, եւ դիպմունք երկոքեան մեծարգոյ են եւ պատուական. այլ սակայն մինն յերկոսեան առաւել եւս մեծ ի վեր է եւ բաղձալի քան զմիւսն. եւ ոչ անյաւժարք եւ անխորհուրդ դիպմունք, որում եւ պատահեմք յերկոցունց. եւ որ ցանկացայք կեալ ժուժկալութեամբ եւ մեռանել յուսով, այլ կեալն եւ մեռանելն մասն է պարծանաց. եւ մեռանել ի վերայ ուխտի սրբոյ` վիճակ է մարտիրոսութեան:

 83:4 The believing person cannot miss the mark twice. If he hits the mark both times, it is laudable and honorable. However, one is greater and more desirable than the other. The two encounters are not unwillingly or unthoughtfully met. Living and dying is part of that exaltation for those who wish to live prudently and die hoping. To die for a blessed vow is the lot of martyrdom:

83:5 Արդ` յաղթութեան մասամբն բազում անգամ պայծառացոյց զմեզ Աստուած, եւ գոհ եմք. իսկ որ առաւել մեծն է եւ քան զամենայն ի վեր` զայն եւս պարգեւեալ շնորհեսցէ մեզ հզաւրն եւ պսակեսցէ:

 83:5 Now God has frequently glorified us with the victory and we are thankful of that. And the Almighty will also grant us and crown us with that which is above all else. Let no one ignorantly be frightened through lack of faith:

83:6 Բայց եւ այժմ մի՛ զանգիտեալ ոք զարհուրեսցի թերահաւատութեամբ. վասն զի սուրբ Հոգին որ ասաց, թէ Զորս տէր Աստուած հարկանէ եւ ի ձեռս իւրոց սիրելեացն ցուցանէ` մին զհազարս հալածէ, եւ երկուս զբիւրս շարժէ, արդ` եւ մեք Աստուծոյ, եւ Աստուած հայի ի մեզ աւգնել:

 83:6 For it was the holy Spirit which note: “Those whom the lord God strikes one through his dear ones can chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight” [II Deuteronomy 32, 30]. We belong to God and God will look upon and aid us:

83:7 Եմք մեք թուով սակաւ, բազում հարիւր առաւել, թէ եւս յոլովք եւ կամ նուազք. եւ եթէ խոստմունս ասացելոցն կատարել ի մեզ կամի հզաւրն` ապա նոցա յերեք հարիւր հազարս զաւրուցն շատ մարդկան բազմութիւնք պիտին. քանզի ոչ գոյ ի նոսա, ըստ կշռելոյ ական, աւելի քան զչորս հազար արանց:

 83:7 We are few in number. But if the Almighty wishes to fulfill (His) promises, (i.e., that each of us will be able to chase away [1000] of the enemy] then the multitude of the enemy is lacking to become [300,000] (as against our [300]. They have no more than [4,000], to judge it by sight:

83:8 Բայց մեք Աստուծով պարծեսցուք զաւրհանապազ, եւ անուան նորա խոստովան եղիցուք յաւիտեան:

 83:8 But let us always exalt in God’s name and always confess it, for eternity:

83:9 Եւ ասացեալ զայս ամենայն բանս զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի, բաժանեալ որքան իսկ էին արք զաւրուն ընդ նմա` տայ իւրաքանչիւր զաւրագլխացն, զորոց կարծէր եթէ ի դէպ է եւ պատշաճս:

 83:9 When Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, had expressed all these sentiments, he divided the troops he had and entrusted them to each of the military commanders whom he considered able and capable:

83:10 Եւ մինչ դեռ եւս նա կազմէր յարձակմանն, եւ զաւրքն Պարսից ճակատեալք կարգմամբ գային սաստկապէս ի պատերազմ` հայեցեալ տեսանէ, զի գունդն ամենայն Հայոց, դարձուցեալ զերեսս յուխտէն երդմանն Աւետարանին եւ ի խրատուէ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի` երթային փախստեայք ամենեքեան:

 83:10 While he was still organizing the attack and the Iranian troops arranged in fronts were ferociously coming to war, (Vahan) looked and saw that the entire Armenian brigade had turned tail from the oath sworn on the Gospel, and from the counsel of Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, and were all fleeing. Only about [40] people, more or less, remained:

83:11 Եւ մնաց ինքն եւ յուխտապահացն Մուշեղ ի տոհմէն Մամիկոնէից եւ երեքեան Կամսարականքն, որդիք երանելւոյ Արշաւրայ, ինքեանց երկուք կամ երեք դայեկաւք, եւ այլ թուով արք, որք ի յազատաց եւ որ իւր իսկ ի Մամիկոնէից տանէն, ընդ բնաւ որպէս թէ քառասնիւք կամ նուազիւք եւս:

 83:11 Vahan himself and the oath-keepers including Mushegh of the Mamikonean tohm, the two Kamsarakan (brothers), sons of the venerable Arshawir, two or three of their dayeaks, and other azats from the Mamikonean house:

83:12 Որոց եւս տեսեալ զփախուստն ամենայն գնդին Հայոց առհասարակ եւ զարհուրեալք` ասէր ոմն ցզաւրավարն Հայոց ցՎահան Մամիկոնեան, թէ «Յո՛ւշ, տէր, յո՛ւշ». այսինքն թէ հնար ինչ է ի ժամուս տեղի տալ եւ անձին զգուշանալ:

 83:12 Seeing the flight of the entire Armenian brigade, those who remained were terrified and one of them said to the general of Armenia, Vahan Mamikonean: “Lord, take care, take care”! In other words, (he thought) it was possible to give way and to save himself:

83:13 Եւ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի տեառնագրեալ զինքն` բարձր ձայնիւ ասէր, թէ «Ցիս արդ ոք յուշ մի՛ ասէք. զի ինձ յուսալ ի մարդ եւ կամ պարծել մարդով` քա՛ւ լիցի, բայց միայն ի խաչն տեառն մերոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի:

 83:13 But Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, made the sign of the Cross over himself and said in a loud voice: “Let no one tell me to take care, for I do not place my hopes in man or pride myself in them—God forbid! I (place my hopes) only in the Cross of our lord Jesus Christ:

83:14 Եւ քաջաբար ի մէջ ամենայն զաւրացն Պարսից յարձակէր հանդերձ լաւ ուխտապահ արամբքն սակաւուք, որ մնային առ նմա:

 83:14 Then (Vahan) plunged into the entire Iranian army, attacking with the few good oath-keeping men who remained with him:

83:15 Եւ ապշեալ ընդ ահաւոր աներկիւղ ուժին զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ եւ ընդ այլ սակաւ այնքան արանցն որ ընդ նմա, զաւրագլխին Պարսից Շապհոյ` ճեպով ցիշխանն Սիւնեաց առ Գդիհոն յղէր, ասէ. «Ձե՛ռն տուր յիս կողմն, վասն զի իրս անպատումն իմն եւ նորոգս ցուցաւ. զի թէ արդարեւ զաւրութիւն իմն աներեւոյթ այլ է, որ աւգնէ նոցա եւ մեզ չերեւի` զայն ես ոչ գիտեմ. բայց եթէ անմտութեամբ ցանկան անձնամահք լինել` ապա ի մէջ արարեալ զամենեսեան զնոսա այսաւր ձերբակալս առնեմք:

 83:15 The Iranian military commander Shapuh, astonished by the awesome and courageous strength of Armenia’s general, Vahan, and the few men with him, quickly sent to Gdihon, prince of Siwnik’, saying: “Help me on this side, because (Vahan) is doing something peculiar and new. I do not know if there is indeed some invisible force aiding them which we cannot see. But if they stupidly want to commit suicide, then let us get them in our midst and arrest all of them today:

83:16 Եւ իշխանն Սիւնեաց Գդիհոնն խնդալից եղեալ ընդ կոչն Շապհոյ` նշկահելով փութանակի ի տեղին արշաւէր:

 83:16 Gdihon, prince of Siwnik’, became ecstatic at Shapuh’s summons, and arising, he quickly went to where the campaign was being conducted:

83:17 Եւ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան, հանդերձ ընդ իւր միասիրտ սակաւ արամբք, աւգնութեամբ աջոյ հզաւրին յարձակեալ` հերձանէր զբովանդակ գունդն Պարսից, որպէս յորդահոսանք բազմութիւնք ջրոց, որ հեղեղատեն զերկիր եւ անցանեն:

 83:17 Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, with the few like-minded people with him, attacked assisted by the right-hand of the Almighty. He plunged into the entire Iranian brigade as though it was merely a torrential rain which falls to the ground and vanishes:

83:18 Եւ ինքն հզաւրաբար քաջ ուխտակցաւքն նման առիւծու ընդ մէջ ամենեցուն յայնկոյս ելանէր. եւ սպանեալ իւր եւ արանցն որ ընդ նմա բազում արս հզաւրս պատերազմողս ի զաւրացն Պարսից` հարեալ խոցէին նիզակաւ ընդ անութ կարէվէր եւ զհպարտ իշխանն Սիւնեաց զԳդիհոն, եւ զահաւորալուր ամրութիւնն զինուն, յոր պանծացեալ յուսայր անաւրէնն` ցելեալ վեր ի վայր թափ ընդ լեարդն զնիզակատէգն հասուցանէին:

 83:18 Vahan himself, together with his brave oath-keepers, like a lion, forcefully plowed through the middle of the entire mass and came out on the other side. He and the men with him killed many powerful warriors of the Iranian troops. Among them was Gdihon, the haughty prince of Siwnik’, whom they mortally pierced with a lance through the armpit. With a frightful sound they rent the security of his armor in which the impious one had confidence, and the tip of the spear plunged into his liver:

83:19 Որոյ դառնակոռոչ չարալլուկ հեծմամբ յաւուրս սակաւս վճարեալ զոգին` սատակէր անխոստովան. որ պարծէրն ամբարտաւանութեամբ եւ ասէր, թէ «Ես ընդ Վահանայ եւ ընդ այլ Հայերդ ոչ եթէ նետիւ կռուիմ, այլ գղզըկով պուղեալ զբոլորս ցնդեմ, աւ՛ն եւ անդր ցիր եւ ցան արկից ձորոցդ եւ դաշտացդ:

 83:19 After several days of wickedly bitter gasping for air, (Gdihon) gave up the ghost, without confessing. He had at one time immodestly boasted: “I will not fight Vahan and the other Armenians with arrows, but rather with the notch of a single arrow I will scatter and disperse all of them across their valleys and plains:

83:20 Եւ եղեւ բան հպարտութեան նորա բեկումն նմին. զոր մատնեալ Աստուծոյ ի ձեռս արանց զաւրուն Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի մի անգամ եւ երկիցս զիշխանն Սիւնեաց զԳդիհոն, եւ դարձեալ երկայնամտեալ ի նա Աստուծոյ իբրեւ զմարդասէր` ներէր խնայելով, զի թերեւս զղջացեալ գտցէ ժամ դարձի եւ ապաշխարութեան, եւ կեցցէ:

 83:20 His prideful words destroyed him. God had betrayed the prince of Siwnik’, Gdihon, once and twice to the hands of men in the force of Vahan Mamikonean. God patiently and forgivingly pardoned him out of humanity, so that perhaps (Gdihon) would repent, reconvert, do pennance, and be saved:

83:21 Եւ իբրեւ ոչ զգաստացաւ, այլ բնաւ ամենեւիմբ արհամարհեաց զճշմարտութիւն եւ եղեալ անպատասխանի յաստուածային հարցմանն` ընկալաւ զսատակումն ամաւթոյ իւրոյ զաստիս եւ զհանդերձելոցն:

 83:21 But when he did not come to his senses, and instead thoroughly scorned the truth, and did not respond to the divine inquiry, he received his shameful end, in this world and in the next:

83:22 Եւ զաւրքն Պարսից զկնի փախստէիցն Հայոց անցեալ երթային, յորոց եւ արս բազումս սպանին ի թուլացեալ մեղկացելոցն:

 83:22 The Iranian troops went after the fugitive Armenians, and they killed many of these weakened cowards:

83:23 Բայց զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի հանդերձ իւրովք գործակցաւքն զգործ քաջութեանն վճարեալ Աստուծոյ զաւրութեամբն` երթայր այնուհետեւ յանհոգս, որպէս թեւակից զաւրուն Պարսից. եւ գունդք ամենայն զաւրացն Շապհոյ եւ հայել ի նոսա լոկ ոչ իշխէին:

 83:23 After Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean with his colleagues had completed this deed of bravery (with the power of God), he then went unconcernedly as though he were a wing of the Iranian force. All the brigades of Shapuh’s troops did not even dare to look at their faces:

83:24 Քանզի այնպէս արկեալ էր Աստուծոյ զահ եւ զերկիւղ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի ի վերայ զաւրացն Պարսից, զի կարծէին, թէ ի հայեցուածէ լոկ առն Մամիկոնենի եւ յարանցն որ ընդ նմայն էին` չզերծանիցին առանց վտանգի:

 83:24 Because God had so inspired them with fear and dread of Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, that the Iranian troops thought that if they merely looked at the Mamikonean and the men with him, they would be unable to escape without injury:

83:25 Բայց ուխտապահ զաւրացելոց արանցն, որք ընդ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ յարձակեալք նահատակեցան ի ժամուն` երանելին Քոնթ Առաւենեան, եւ երանելին Ներս Յովսեպեան, եւ երանելին Ատգէն սեպուհն Վանանդացի, եւ երանելին Ղերպարգոս որ էր ազգաւ յոյն:

 83:25 Of the oath-keeping and strengthened men who were with Armenia’s general, Vahan, and who attacked and were then martyred were: K’ont’ Arhawenean, the venerable Ners Yovsepean, the venerable Atgen, sepuh of the Vanandac’ik’, and the venerable Gherpargos, who was of Greek nationality:
