 11:0 Khosrov’s letter to the emperor Maurice. The decision of the senate. Maurice sends Khosrov an army in support. Two letters of Vahram to Musheł and his response. The battle in which Vahram’s army is defeated. The flight and death of Vahram:

11:1 Յայնժամ յղէ Խոսրով արքայ առ թագաւորն Մաւրիկ արս ճոխս պատարագաւք, եւ գրէ այսպէս. «Տուր ինձ զգահ եւ զտեղի թագաւորութեան հարց եւ նախնեաց իմոց, եւ արձակեա ինձ զաւր յաւգնութիւն, որով կարացից հարկանել զթշնամին իմ, եւ կանգնեա զթագաւորութիւն իմ, եւ եղէց քոյ որդի:

 11:1 Then king Khosrov sent to king Maurice prominent men with gifts, and wrote as follows: ’Give me the throne and royal station of my fathers and ancestors; send me an army in support with which I may be able to defeat my enemy; and restore my kingdom; then I shall be your son:

11:2 Եւ տաց քեզ զկողմանս Ասորւոց - զԱրուաստանն ամենայն մինչեւ ի Մծբին քաղաք, եւ յերկրէն Հայոց՝ զաշխարհն Տանուտէրական իշխանութեանն մինչեւ ցԱյրարատ եւ ցԴուին քաղաք, եւ մինչեւ ցեզր ծովուն Բզնունեաց եւ ցԱռեստաւան. եւ զմեծ մասն Վրաց աշխարհին՝ մինչեւ զՏփխիս քաղաք. եւ կալցուք ուխտ խաղաղութեան ի մէջ մեր մինչեւ ցմահ երկոցունցս, եւ անշուշտ լիցի այս երդումն ի միջի մերում եւ ի մէջ որդւոց մերոց, որ թագաւորելոց իցեն յետ մեր:

 11:2 I shall give you the regions of Syria - all Aruastan as far as the city of Nisibis - and of the land of Armenia the area of Tanutēr authority as far as Ayrarat and the city of Dvin, and up to the shore of the lake of Bznunik’ and to Arestawan; and a great part of the land of Iberia, as far as the city of Tp’khis. Let us observe a pact of peace between us until the death of us both; and let this oath be secure between us and between our sons who will reign after us. ’:

11:3 Արդ՝ ժողովեալ թագաւորին զամենայն սնկղիտոսն, հարցանէր ցնոսա խորհուրդ, եւ ասէր. «Սպանին Պարսիկք զՈրմիզդ զթագաւորն իւրեանց եւ նստուցին զորդի նորա թագաւոր: Եւ զաւրք թագաւորութեանն նստուցին զայլ ոմն թագաւոր յԱրեւելս. եւ եկեալ նա զաւրու մեծաւ յինքն յափշտակեաց զթագաւորութիւնն. եւ մանուկ որդի նորա փախստական գնացեալ եկն առ մեզ, եւ խնդրէ ի մէնջ զաւրս յաւգնականութիւն, եւ խոստանայ առնել այսպէս:

 11:3 Then the king gathered all the senate and asked their advice. He note: ’The Persians have killed their king Ormizd and installed his son as king. The royal army has installed someone else as king in the east. He came with a large army and seized the kingdom for himself. The former’s young son has come to me in flight and seeks from us an army in support, and promises to act thus:

11:4 Արդ՝ զինչ արասցուք, ընդունիմք. արժան է ընդունել, թէ ոչ»: Իսկ նոքա ասեն. «Ոչ է արժան ընդունել, զի ազգ մի անաւրէն են եւ ամենեւին սուտ. ի նեղութեան իւրեանց խոստանան առնել, եւ յորժամ յանդորր ելանեն՝ ստեն. բազում չարիս կրեալ է մեր ի նոցանէ. թող սպառեսցեն զմիմեանս, եւ մեք հանգիցուք:

 11:4 Now what shall we do? Shall we agree? Is it proper to agree, or not? ’ Then they note: ’It is not proper to agree, because they are an impious nation and altogether deceitful. In their distress they make promises, but when they emerge into calmer (times), they renege. We have suffered many evils from them. Let them slaughter each other, and we shall have relief. ’:

11:5 Անդ թագաւորն Խոսրով կայր ի մեծ վտանգի, եւ տեսանէր զմահ առաջի աչաց. զի զերծեալ էր ի բերանոյ առիւծու եւ անկեալ ի բերան թշնամեաց, ուստի փախուստ ոչ գոյր:

 11:5 At that point king Khosrov was in great danger and saw death before his eyes; for he had escaped from the mouth of the lion but had fallen into the mouth of enemies from whom there was no flight:

11:6 Իսկ թագաւորն մերժեալ զխորհուրդս սնկղիտոսացն՝ յինքենէ յղէր զՓիղիպիկոս զփեսայ իւր եւ տայր տանել պատասխանի ընդունելութեանն. առնոյր ի նմանէ երդումն, եւ տայր նմա զաւր կայսերական յաւգնականութիւն՝ զՅովհանն Պատրիկ ի Հայոց կողմանէ, եւ զՆերսէս ստրատելատ յԱսորւոց եւ զզաւրս նոցա. անցեալք ի հանդիսի, երեք հազար հեծեալ ըստ հարիւրաւորաց, ըստ հազարաւորաց, ըստ գնդից, ըստ դրաւշից իւրեանց:

 11:6 But the king rejected the advice of the senate. Of his own accord he sent his son-in-law P’iłipikos and had him bring a favourable response. He received an oath from him, and gave him a royal army in support: Yovhan patrik from the region of Armenia, and Nersēs stratelat from Syria with his army. They passed in review - three thousand cavalry in hundreds, in thousands, in battalions, according to their banners:

11:7 Եւ զզաւրս աշխարհին Հայոց ընդունէին գումարել, որք ի ժամուն առ ձեռն գտեալ. եւ անցեալք ի հանդիսի իբրեւ հազարք հնգետասանք, իւրաքանչիւր գունդք նախարարաց՝ ըստ հարիւրաւորաց, ըստ հազարաւորաց, ըստ գնդից, ըստ դրաւշուց իւրեանց: Ամենեքեան սոքա սպառազէնք, ընտիրք պատերազմողք, վառեալք քաջութեամբ՝ իբրեւ զհուր, որ ոչ զանգիտեն եւ ոչ զթիկունս դարձուցանէին:

 11:7 They agreed to gather the troops of the land of Armenia who at that time were at hand. They passed in review - about [15,000], the battalions of each of the nobles, in hundreds, in thousands, in battalions, according to their banners. All of these were fully armed, elite warriors, burning with courage like fire, who did not hesitate or turn their backs:

11:8 Դէմք առիւծու դէմք նոցա, թեթեւութիւն ոտից իբրեւ զթեթեւութիւն այծեմանց երագութեամբ ի վերայ դաշտաց: Մտադիւրութեամբ եւ ամենայն հնազանդութեամբ չու յուղի անկեալ գնացին:

 11:8 Their faces were the faces of lions; the swiftness of their feet like the swiftness of gazelles in rapidity over the plains. With promptness and in all preparedness, they set out on their way:

11:9 Արդ՝ առեալ ապստամբին միհրացելոյն զզաւրս իւր, զփիղս եւ զամենայն զգանձս թագաւորական, չու արարեալ գնայ հասանէ յԱտրպատական. եւ բանակեցան սակաւ մի հեռագոյն ի միմեանց ի Վարարատ գաւառին:

 11:9 Then the rebel mihrats’i, taking his army, the elephants, and all the royal treasures, set off and reached Atrpatakan. They encamped a little distance from each other in the province of Vararat:

11:10 Արդ՝ գրէ Վահրամն հրովարտակ առ Մուշեղ եւ առ այլ նախարարս Հայոց, որ ունէր այսպէս:

 11:10 Then Vahram wrote a letter to Musheł and the other Armenian nobles, which ran as follows:

11:11 Ես այսպէս կարծէի, եթէ ես յորժամ ընդ թշնամիս ձեր մարտնչիմ, եւ դուք ի կողմանէ այտի եկեալ՝ ինձ աւգնական լինիցիք. զի ես եւ դուք միաբանութեամբ բարձցուք ի միջոյ զտիեզերական պատուհասն, զտունն Սասանայ: Իսկ դուք աւադիկ ժողովեալ գայք ի վերայ իմ պատերազմաւ յաւգնականութիւն դմա:

 11:11 ’I would have supposed that while I was fighting against your enemies, you would have come from your region to assist me, so that you and I in unison might remove that universal scourge, the house of Sasan. But behold, you have gathered together and come against me in battle to assist that fellow:

11:12 Այլ ես ոչ երկեայց ժողովելոց երիցանցդ Հռովմայեցւոցդ, որ եկեալ են ի վերայ իմ: Բայց դուք, Հայք, որ տարաժամ ցուցանէք զտիրասիրութիւն. ոչ ապաքէն տունդ Սասանական եբարձ զերկիրդ ձեր եւ զտէրութիւն: Եւ կամ ընդէր բնաւ ապստամբեցին հարքն ձեր եւ գնացին ի ծառայութենէ նոցա, մինչեւ ցայսաւր պատերազմեալ ի վերայ աշխարհին ձերոյ: Եւ արդ՝ դիմեալ գայք ի վերայ իմ կորուսանել զայնչափ վաստակս ձեր. զի թէ Խոսրով յաղթեալ էր՝ երկոքին դոքա միաբանեալ բարձցեն զձեզ ի միջոյ:

 11:12 Yet I shall not be afraid of your assembled Roman worthies who have come against me. As for you Armenians who demonstrate an unseasonable loyalty, did not that house of Sasan destroy your land and sovereignty? Why otherwise did your fathers rebel and extricate themselves from their service, fighting up until today for your country? So, you have attacked me in order to abrogate so many services of yours. For should Khosrov be the victor, those two in concert will eliminate you:

11:13 Բայց զի հաճոյ թուեսցի ձեզ ի բաց կալ ի դոցանէ եւ միաբանել ընդ իս, եւ ձեռն տալ ինձ յաւգնականութիւն: Եւ թէ ես յաղթեցից՝ երդուեալ ի մեծ աստուածն Արամազդ, եւ յԱրեգակն տէր եւ ի Լուսին, ի Հուր եւ ի Ջուր, ի Միհր եւ յամենայն աստուածս, եթէ ձեզ տուեալ լիցի իմ զՀայոց թագաւորութիւնն. զոր եւ դուք կամիք՝ արասջիք ձեզ թագաւոր: Եւ թողում ձեզ զամենայն երկիրն Հայոց մինչեւ ցԿապկոհ եւ ցդուռն Աղուանից. եւ յԱսորւոց կողմանէ՝ զԱրուաստան, զՄրծուին եւ զՆոր Շիրական մինչեւ ցսահմանս Տաճկաց, զի առ նախնեաւքն իսկ ձեզ լեալ է. եւ ընդ արեւմուտս մինչեւ ցԿեսարիա Կապադովկացւոց:

 11:13 But let it seem good to you to remove yourselves from them, and to join me and lend me assistance. If I shall be victorious, I swear by the great god Aramazd, by the lord Sun and the Moon, by fire and water, by Mihr and all the gods, that I will give you the kingdom of Armenia, and whoever you wish you may make king for yourselves. I shall give up for you all the land of Armenia as far as the Caucasus and the Pass of the Ałuank’; and on the side of Syria, Aruastan, Nisibis, and Nor Shirakan as far as the borders of the Arabs, because that was yours in the time of your ancestors; in the west, as far as Caesarea of Cappadocia:

11:14 Եւ ես մի իշխեցից քան զԶարասպ անցանել յայնկոյս. եւ գանձն Արեաց թագաւորութեանս բաւական համարեալ լիցի ինձ եւ ձեզ, եւ այնչափ ձեզ շատ լիցի՝ մինչեւ ձեր թագաւորութիւնդ հաստատեսցի:

 11:14 I shall not presume to pass beyond Mt. Zarasp. Let the treasure of this kingdom of the Aryans be reckoned sufficient for you and me; and be content with that until your kingdom is reestablished. ’:

11:15 Եւ ըստ իւրեանց կարգի՝ էր աղ ծրարեալ եւ կնքեալ ընդ հրովարտակին:

 11:15 In accordance with their tradition, salt was wrapped up and sealed with the missive:

11:16 Եւ առեալ նոցա զհրովարտակն եւ ընթերցեալ՝ ոչ արարին բանիցն պատասխանի. եւ ոչ իսկ ասացին բազմաց, զի երկնչէին յանմիաբանութենէ իւրեանց:

 11:16 When they received the letter and had read it, they made no response to the message, nor did they mention it to many people, because they were afraid of disunity:

11:17 Եւ արդ՝ գրէ նա անդրէն դարձեալ թուղթ երկրորդ:

 11:17 Then he wrote again a second letter:

11:18 Գրեցի առ ձեզ ի բաց կալ ի նոցանէ, ինձ եւ ձեզ բաւական համարելով զամենայն աշխարհս եւ զամենայն գանձս թագաւորութեանս այսորիկ. ուրեմն ոչ կամեցարուք լսել, զի ոչ արարէք բանիցն պատասխանի:

 11:18 ’I wrote to you to separate from them, reckoning sufficient for you and me all this land and all the treasures of this kingdom. So you did not wish to heed me, because you did not reply to the proposition:

11:19 Ես զձեզ ապաշաւեմ, ասէ. քանզի վաղիւ առաւաւտուն ցուցանեմ ձեզ փիղս վառս, եւ ի վերայ, զաւրս սպառազինեալս քաջաց, որ տեղասցեն ի վերայ ձեր նետս երկաթեղէնս ձեռբաձգութեամբ, եւ շաւառունս մուխս պողվատիկս սլաքաւք՝ ի հաստաձիգ աղեղանց. արս երիտասարդս հզաւրս սպառազէնս վատնելոց, եւ երիվարս տաճիկս եւ երագունս, տապարս եւ սուսերս մուխս եւ պողվատիկս եւ կռուփս՝ որչափ Խոսրովայ եւ ձեզ պիտոյ իցէ:

 11:19 ’I am sorry for you, he said, because tomorrow morning I shall show you armoured elephants, and on them an army of armed warriors who will rain down on you iron arrows thrown by hand, tempered steel lances, with darts, from their powerful bows, strong young men fully armed to repel you, fast Arabian horses, axes and swords of tempered steel, and blows as many as may be necessary for you and Khosrov. ’:

11:20 Առնէ նմա Մուշեղ պատասխանի այսքան. «Առ Աստուծոյ է թագաւորութիւնն, եւ ում կամեցաւ՝ ետ. բայց դու պարտիս յանձն քո ապաշաւել եւ ոչ ի մեզ: Եւ ծանեայ զքեզ պոռոքաբան. եւ ոչ խրախուսես յԱստուած, այլ ի քաջութիւն եւ ի փղաց զաւրութիւն: Այլ ես ասեմ քեզ. եթէ Աստուած կամեսցի՝ վաղիւ պատելոց է զքեւ պատերազմ քաջաց, եւ ճայթեսցեն ի վերայ քո եւ ի վերայ բազմութեան փղացդ իբրեւ զամպս երկնից գազանագոյնս քան զամենեսեան:

 11:20 Musheł responded as follows: ’Kingship is from God, and he gave it to whom he wished. But you must be sorry for your own self, and not for us. I know you for a braggart. You do not have confidence in God, but in valour and the strength of elephants. But I tell you that, if God wills, tomorrow the combat of valiant men will envelop you, and they will burst upon you and the multitude of your elephants like the most violent clouds of heaven:

11:21 Եւ ի վերուստ ահագին ճայթէ եւ փայլատակէ եւ յարձակին քեզ սպառազէնք ճերմակ երիվարաւք եւ բռնալիր նիզակաւք, եւ անցանեն ի մէջ բազմութեանն՝ իբրեւ զփայլատակունք հրոյ շանթելոյ, զի ցաւղանայցեն ի յերկնից ի յերկիր, եւ այրեսցեն զխռիւս դաշտաց, զանտառս զդալարս եւ զգաւսացեալս: Քանզի թէ Աստուած կամեսցի՝ տանելոց է սաստկութիւն հողմոյ զզաւրութիւնդ քո իբրեւ զփոշի, եւ գանձ արքունի յարքունիս գնայ:

 11:21 From on high there will be a fearsome crashing and flashing; warriors will assail you on white horses with heavy lances, and will penetrate your host like thunderbolts of flashing fire, that will drop down from heaven to earth and burn up the brushwood of the plains and the forests, green and dry alike. For if God wills, a fierce tempest will blow away your power like dust, and the royal treasure will return to the palace. ’:

11:22 Էին ընդ նոսա Վնդոյն այն եւ Վստամ, զոր վերագոյն ասացի. եւ զաւրք պարսիկք իբրեւ ութ հազար հեծեալ:

 11:22 There were with them that Vndoy and Vstam whom I mentioned above, and about [8,000] Persian mounted troops:

11:23 Եւ եղեւ ի վաղուեան առաւաւտուն, մինչդեռ արեւն զծայրս հարկանէր, կարգէին ճակատ առ ճակատ, եւ բաղխէին զմիմեանս պատերազմաւ: Ուժգին լինէր խումբ եւ խառնուրդ, եւ սաստիկ լինէր կոտորածն ի մէջ տարուբերին: Եւ մարտուցեալ յայգուէ մինչեւ ցերեկոյ՝ յաւգնեցան երկոքին կողմեանքն ի պատերազմին:

 11:23 On the morning of the following day, while the sun was striking the horizon, they drew up, front line facing front line, and crashed against each other in battle. Powerful was the shock in the midst of the melee. They fought from dawn to evening, and both sides became weary in the conflict:

11:24 Եւ այնչափ սաստիկ լինէր կոտորածն, մինչեւ զի խաղացեալ վտակաց սաստկութիւն արեանցն առոգանէր զերկիրն ամենայն: Եւ ոչ կարացեալ զդէմ ունել փախստական լինէր զաւրն ապստամբական առաջի զաւրացն Յունաց: Իսկ նոցա զհետ մտեալ մինչեւ զքաջ մթանալ երեկոյին՝ ցիրս դիաթաւալ կացուցանէին զդաշտաւքն եւ զճանապարհաւքն. զբազումս սատակէին ի սուր սուսերի իւրեանց. եւ զբազումս ձերբակալ արարին, եւ կապեալ զձեռս ի վերայ թիկանց՝ բերեալ կացուցանէին առաջի թագաւորին:

 11:24 So severe was the slaughter that thick streams of blood flowed to irrigate the whole land. The rebel force was unable to resist the Greek army and fled. But the latter pursued them until the night was pitch dark, scattering corpses over the plains and roads. Many they slew with their swords, and many they captured. Binding their hands behind their backs, they brought them before the king:

11:25 Եւ բազմութիւն փղացն դիմեալ գնային բռնաբար: Ապա զհետ արշաւեալ ազատագունդ սպառազինացն՝ ներքուստ ի վեր ծակոտէին զսպառազէնս հեծելոց, որ կային ի նիւս փղացն. եւ աներկիւղ անվեհեր կռուէին, եւ սատակեալ զբազում փիղս եւ զհեծեալս եւ զփղապանս՝ դարձուցանէին անդէն բռնաբար եւ զբազմութիւն փղացն: Եւ եկին ածին յանդիման թագաւորին:

 11:25 The host of elephants charged off forcefully. But the armed nobility, galloping in pursuit, pierced from below the armour of the riders who were on the backs of the elephants. Fearlessly and intrepidly they fought. After killing many elephants and their riders and handlers, by force they turned back the multitude of elephants. These were brought before the king:

11:26 Եւ անդէն դիմեալ ի բանակատեղն զաւրացն Վահրամայ: Եւ կայր ի խորանին գանձ արքունի եւ ամենայն գանձք թագաւորութեանն անթիւ եւ անհամար պատուականք. զամենայն աւար հարկանէին. եւ զբազում գահոյս ոսկիապատս չքնաղ եւ զանազան կազմութեամբ մանրէին սուսերաւք իւրեանց, եւ անցանէին ի կողմանս փաղանգ փաղանգ զբեռինս բարձեալ ուղտուց եւ ջորւոց բազմութեանն: Եւ լցան ամենեքեան բազում եւ մեծամեծ աւարաւ:

 11:26 Then they attacked the encampment of Vahram’s army. In his tent was the royal treasure and all the numberless and immensely precious treasures of the kingdom. They plundered it all. With their swords they slashed in pieces the many gilded cushions with sumptuous and varied decoration. They went in (different) directions, phalanx by phalanx, a multitude of camels and mules carrying their loads. They were all filled with enormous booty:

11:27 Ժողովեցին ապա եւ զաւրն Պարսից ի ճապաղուածէ գանձուցն ոչ սակաւ իրս, եւ հասուցին անդրէն յարքունիսն իւրեանց: Եւ զաւրացաւ յաւուր յայնմիկ արքայ Խոսրով ի ձեռն յաղթութեանն այնորիկ քան զամենայն զթշնամիս իւր, եւ հաստատեցաւ թագաւորութիւն նորա:

 11:27 Then the Persian army collected not a little of the scattered treasure and restored it to their treasury. Through that victory king Khosrov was strengthened on that day over all his enemies, and his rule was confirmed:

11:28 Եւ զբազմութիւն ձերբակալաց ձիահեծելոց եւ փղահեծելոցն հրամայէր մերկացուցանել եւ կապել զձեռս ի վերայ ուսոց եւ արկանել կոխան ի ներքոյ ոտից փղացն: Եւ ոչ ուրեք կարացին գտանել զհետ Վահրամայ. զի զերծաւ եւ գնաց այսպէս փախստական, եւ չոգաւ եւ անկաւ ի Բահլ Շահաստան, ուր եւ ի բանէն Խոսրովայ սպանաւ ի նոցունց իսկ:

 11:28 He ordered the multitude of captured cavalry and elephant-riders to be stripped, their hands tied on their shoulders, and to be trampled under the feet of the elephants. They were unable to find any trace of Vahram, because he had escaped and fled. He went and took refuge in Bahl Shahastan, where by Khosrov’s order he was put to death by its people:
