31:0 Յաղագս խռովութեան Ափշնի ոստիկանին ընդ Սմբատայ արքային, եւ ապստամբութեան Դվին քաղաքի:

 31:0 The Dissension between the Governor (Ostikan) Afshin and King Smbat, and the Insurrection in the City of Dwin:

31:1 Բայց Սմբատայ հաւաստապէս հաստատեալ թագաւորութիւնն՝ հնարէր ըստ Պօղոսի ընդ ամենեսեան յարդարել զխաղաղութեան սիրոյն պայման: Եւ նախ ըստ հայրենի կարգացն ուխտի ոչ զատէր զինքն ի սիրընթաց մտերմութենէ կայսերն Հոռոմոց Լեւոնի՝ ընծայիւք բազմօք եւ նուիրական պատարագօք զնա մեծարեալ ըստ հեզահամբոյր հանդարտութեան իւրոյ:

 31:1 Placing his kingdom on a firm foundation, Smbat tried to establish peaceful relations with everyone in accordance with the words of Paul. First, in compliance with the alliance of his father, he did not withdraw from the friendly affection of Leo Emperor of the Romans. He honored the latter with many gifts and worthy presents in accordance with his gentle temper:

31:2 Վասն որոյ եւ Կայսր ոչ եթէ փոքր ինչ քան թէ մեծամեծս նմա ընձեռէր պարգեւս եւ պատիւս գեղեցիկ զինուց եւ զարդուց եւ ոսկէհուռ հանդերձ զգեստուց, եւ ըմպակս եւ բաժակս, եւ կամարս ականակապս ի համակ ոսկւոյ. այլ եւ մեծ քան զայն այն էր, զի որդի սիրելի Կայսր զՍմբատ իւր անուանէր՝ սիրալիր դաշամբք ուխտից:

 31:2 In return, the Emperor gave to him an exceedingly great many number of gifts, namely, beautiful weapons, ornaments, robes wrought with gold, goblets, and cups, and girdles of pure gold studded with gems. But a greater honor than these was, that the Emperor addressed Smbat as his “beloved son” by means of a treaty of friendship:

31:3 Իսկ իբրեւ զայս ամենայն լսէր թագատուն Սմբատայ՝ ոստիկանն Ափշին, եւ զհաստատուն անշուշտ սիրոյ միակամութիւն նորա ընդ Կայսեր՝ ի խոր խոցեալ եւ խանդացեալ ընդ իրսն, եթէ գուցէ դաւ ինչ նմա ի նոցանէ լինիցի՝ առ եղծանել հատանել փութայր զկապ միաբանութեան սիրոյ նոցա: Վասն որոյ զօր բազում գումարեալ խորհէր չուել գալ հասանել ի Հայս:

 31:3 When the governor (ostikan) Afshin, who had given the crown to Smbat, learned of this, as well as of the firm friendship and agreement with the Emperor, he was greatly distressed and irritated at these matters, (which he suspected to be) a plot against himself. He made haste to sever the ties of friendship between them, and having gathered numerous troops for this, he decided to set out and come to Armenia:

31:4 Զոր վաղվաղակի արքային Սմբատայ զգացեալ զչարիմաց խարդաւանս Ափշնի՝ վաղվաղակի հորդան տայր զօրաց իւրոց նախարարակոյտ բազմութեամբ եւ քաջամարտիկ արանց պատերազմողաց եւ աջողակ զինաշարժից իբրեւ արանց երեսուն հազարաց, եւ գնայր ընդ առաջ նորա մինչեւ ի գաւառն Ռոտոկայ մերձ յԱտրպատական:

 31:4 As soon as king Smbat realized the wicked schemes of Afshin, he immediately mobilized his forces as well as the multitude of the naxarars contingents, altogether thirty thousand brave warriors and skilled soldiers, and he marched as far as the district of Rotokk’ near Atrpatakan in order to confront the foe:

31:5 Եւ մինչ չեւ մերձեալ հասեալ էր ի զօրս թշնամեացն՝ պատգամս ի ձեռն դեսպանի առ Ափշին առաքէր:

 31:5 But before he reached the enemy line, he sent an envoy to Afshin with the (following) message:

31:6 Ընդէ՞ր՝ ասէ, զչարեալ դիմեալ գաս յոչինչ պէտս. զի թէ սէր ընդ Կայսեր եդի՝ եւ այն եւս վասն ձեր օգտի, զի թերեւս որ պիտոյ է ամիրապետին մեծի եւ զքո եւս դիւրեաւ զպէտս ի Յունականաց անտի գտանել մարթացից, եւ ի նպաստ օժտութեան ձեզ ընծայել զերեւելի հանդերձից եւ զարդուց եւ զսպասուց վայելս. այլ եւ վաճառականաց, որք ընդ դենիդ քո՝ բացեալ ճանապարհ, զի արասցեն մուտ յաշխարհս նոցա եւ ի նոցա լիութենէն փարթամացուսցեն զձեր գանձարանսդ:

 31:6 Why are you coming upon us in anger for no reason? If it is because of the alliance I have made with the Emperor, this was for your benefit also. (I thought that) I might obtain with ease those items that you yourself and the caliph needed from the land of the Greeks, and present you with noteworthy garments, ornaments and vessels for your own use. Likewise, I wished to clear the way for merchants of your faith, so that they might have access to their land, and enrich your treasury with the riches of the Greeks:

31:7 Իսկ իբրեւ այսպիսի հեշտալիր բանից ոճ լուաւ Ափշինն եւ ետես, զի ընտիր ընտիր եկեալ սպառազէնս հասեալ առ դուրս մերձ կային՝ այնուհետեւ ի պատգամաւորութիւն սիրոյ զչարին բանս փոփոխէր:

 31:7 When Afshin heard the soothing tone of the above words, and saw the select bodies of men of war who had reached his border, he changed his evil threats into an offer of friendship:

31:8 Եւ ապա երկաքանչիւրք նոքա յերիվարս ահիպարանոցս աշտանակեալք եւ հանդիպեալք միմեանց, եւ բազում պատիւս եւ պարգեւս թագաւորականս իրերաց ընծայեալ՝ նա դառնայր գնայր յԱտրպատական:

 31:8 Then, mounting upon fiery steeds, they set out to meet each other, and exchanged many royal gifts and presents, and after this Afshin returned to Atrpatakan:

31:9 Իսկ արքայ Սմբատ ընդ կրունկն դարձեալ՝ հասանէր ի մայրաքաղաքն Դվին:

 31:9 King Smbat turned back, and arrived at the capital city of Dvin:

31:10 Եւ վասն զի ըստ առաջնոյ կիտին եդելոյ ոչ ետես զնոսա հնազանդեալս ի ծառայութիւն ինքեան եւ զսակ արքունի հարկաց եւ մաքսից նուազեցուցեալ, ապա դուռն եւս քաղաքին փակեցաւ ընդդէմ նորա:

 31:10 Contrary to the condition that had been set at an earlier time, he did not find the inhabitants of the city submissive to him, and he also noted that they had paid less than the full amount of the royal tributes and taxes. Thereupon, they also shut the gate of the city before him:

31:11 նա պաշարեալ ուժգնապէս զնոսա եւ բազում աղխատրոյզ շփոթմունս եւ աւարառութիւնս եւ տնկակոտորութիւնս եւ հրացանութիւնս զնոքօք զեղեալ՝ ստէպ ստէպ զերկեամ մի զայս առնէր. յորմէ ապա նեղեալ տագնապեալ տարակուսեալ եւ զմիմեամբք ելեալ:

 31:11 He then laid a furious siege against them, and stirred up great confusion, pillage, devastation of forests and destruction by fire, all of which he frequently carried out over a period of two years so that distressed, irritated and harassed, they turned against one another:

31:12 Այնուհետեւ հանդիսադիրք մարտիցն եւ գլխաւոր ոստիկանք եւ հրամանատարք քաղաքին՝ եղբարք երկու, որոց անուանք Մահմէտ եւ Ումայի՝ արտաքս ելեալ գիշերի փախստեայք լինէին. զոր եւ զգացեալ եւ զհետ կրթեալ զօրացն եւ ձերբակալ արարեալ՝ ածեն արքային:

 31:12 Then the contenders who were the chief ostikans and commanders (hramanatar) of the city, two brothers, named Mahmet and Umayi, came out by night and took flight. The forces (of Smbat) learned of this, and going after them in pursuit, seized and brought them to the king:

31:13 Եւ նորա տոռամբք կապանաց եւ վարոցօք զնոսա տանջեալ եւ առեալ ի նոցանէ բազում գանձս ոսկոյ եւ արծաթոյ՝ առ կայսր Լեւոն երկաթի շղթայիւքն զնոսա առաքէ: Անշուշտ նուաճեալ այնուհետեւ զքաղաքացիսն ընդ լծով ծառայութեան իւրոյ:

 31:13 Putting them to the torture with chains and rods, and taking from them many treasures of gold and silver, Smbat sent them in iron fetters to the Emperor Leo. Thereafter, he unquestionably bent the inhabitants to the yoke of his servitude:

31:14 եւ ինքն ձեռնթափ լեալ՝ ի գիւտս աշխարհաց զամենեսեան յանձանձէ ածէ համագունդ եւ ընդ իւրեաւ նուաճէ, զոմանս հեշտականաւ բանիւ եւ զոմանս արդեամբք յինքն յանկուցեալ: Ըստ որում եւ մեծ կուրապաղատն Վրաց եւ համախոհք իւր՝ գեղեցիկ կարգաց ուղղութեամբ հաւանեալք եւ հնազանդեալք լինէին: Իսկ զոմանս ձեռներէց զօրութեամբ հարստահարեալ զընդվըզեալսն եւ յոտին կացուցեալ:

 31:14 and setting about to annex many lands, he watched over all of them, and brought them into obedience, some by means of gentle words, others by force. Accordingly the great Curopalate of Georgia and his adherents persuaded by the righteousness of his wonderful order all submitted to him. But whoever lifted their hands against him, he repressed with daring force, and subdued them beneath his feet:

31:15 Եւ այսպէս ձգտեալ աճեցուցանէր զշաւիղ տէրութեան իւրոյ յարեւմտից հիւսիսոյ մինչեւ ցԿարնոյ քաղաք, եւ անդր եւս քան զԿղարջս՝ քերեալ մինչեւ առ ափն ծովուն մեծի, եւ մինչեւ ցսահմանս Եգերացւոց եւ մինչեւ ցստորոտ մեծի լերինն Կովկասու, զԳուգարացիս եւ զԾանարս մինչեւ ցԴուռն Ալանաց, առեալ եւս յինքն եւ զամրոց դրան պահակի նոցա. եւ անտի ի հարաւակողմն կոյս՝ զԿուր գետով մինչեւ ի քաղաքն Տփխիս. եւ զՈւտի գաւառ մինչեւ ի քաղաքն Հունարակերտ եւ մինչեւ ի Տուս եւ ի Շամքոր:

 31:15 Thus, he extended the boundaries of his domain as far as the city of Karin in the northeast, and to the farther side of Kgharjk’ as far as the shores of the great sea and the borders of Egrisi, as well as to the foot of the Caucasus Mountains, that is to say, Gugark’, and Canark’ as far as the Gate of the Alans, where he also seized the fortress guarding the pass. From there the boundary (ran) southward to the city of Tiflis (Tp’xis) along the course of the Kur River, and (continued) on to the district of Uti, as far as the city of Hunarakert, to Tus and to Shamk’or:

31:16 Եւ այսպէս ընդարձակեալ զսահման տէրութեան իւրոյ, որ ընդ լծով արքունի սակից եւ բեկարաց եւ մաքսից կացուցեալ՝ զզէն քաջութեան մարտի իւրոյ նշան յաղթութեան կանգնէր:

 31:16 Thus he enlarged the limits of his domain and brought these beneath the yoke of the royal tributes, bekars and taxes, and dedicated the weapon he used valiantly in battle as a sign of victory:
