21:1 Իսկ կապեալն Գրիգորիոս անդէն խաւսել սկսաւ եւ ասէ. «Որ ասէքդ, թէ «Աստուած քո»՝ Աստուած է եւ Արարիչ, ամենազաւր կամայական բարերարութեամբն յանուստեք յաննիւթոյ զնիւթական արարածս գոյացոյց. նոյն ինքն էական զաւրութեամբն յանտեղեաց, յանվայր յոչնչէ իմեքէ հրամայեաց հաստատել երկրի. որ զամենայն ինչ արար՝ Աստուածն ամենակալ, ամենարարն, ամենատէրն:	21:1 Then the prisoner Gregory began to speak: “The one you call ’your God’ is God and creator, who in his almighty benevolence has brought material creatures into being from immaterial nothing [cf. II Macc. 7.28; Rom. 4.17]. The same ordered the earth to be established by his essential power from uncircumscribed, boundless nothing. He who created everything is the almighty, all-creative and all-loving God:
21:2 Զնա ծաներուք, զի բժշկեսցին ձեր ցաւքդ յանցանաց ի պատուհասէ այտի:	21:2 Recognize him, in order that your pains from the punishment of your crimes may be healed:
21:3 Որ վասն իւրոյ մարդասէր ողորմութեանն խրատեաց զձեզ, ըստ բանի աստուածական Իմաստութեանն, որպէս ասաց իսկ, թէ Զոր սիրէ Տէր՝ խրատէ. գանալից առնէ զորդի՝ զոր յակն առնու:	21:3 He warned you in his benevolent mercy according to the saying of the divine Wisdom: ’Whom God loves he warns; he castigates the son for whom he cares’:
21:4 Իսկ նա բարերարութեամբ իւրով կոչէ զձեզ յորդեգրութիւն:	21:4 Now in his benevolence he summons you to adoption:
21:5 Իսկ ճշմարիտ Որդին Աստուծոյ ոչ ամաւթ համարի զայնոսիկ իւր եղբարս անուանել, որք դարձցին յերկրպագութիւն Հաւր:	21:5 The true Son of God considers it no shame to call his brothers [cf. Heb. 2.11] those who will turn to the worship of the Father:
21:6 Եւ Հոգին սուրբ շնորհեսցէ ձեզ զառհաւատչեայ սիրոյն իւրոյ, զուարճացուցանել զսիրտս ձեր յուրախութիւն որ ոչն անցանէ. բայց միայն եթէ դարձջիք եւ ըստ կամաց նորա գնասջիք, տացէ ձեզ զանմահութիւն կենաց:	21:6 And the holy Spirit will grant you the pledge of his love [cf. II Cor. 1.22], and awaken your hearts to the joy which passes not away. But only if you turn and walk according to his desires will he give you eternal life:
21:7 Այլ զի կոչեցէքդ «Աստուած քո»՝ բարիոք ասացէք. քանզի որք ճանաչեն զնա՝ նա նոցա Աստուած է:	21:7 But in saying ’your God’ you spoke well, because for those who recognize him, he is their God:
21:8 Իսկ որք ոչն ճանաչեն, թէպէտ եւ են նորա արարածք՝ աւտար են ի խնամոց եւ ի սիրոյ մարդասիրութենէ անտի նորա. իսկ երկիւղածք նորա մերձ են առ նա, եւ այցելութիւն նորա շուրջ է զնոքաւք, եւ պահէ զնոսա:	21:8 But for those who do not recognize him, even though they are his creatures, they are estranged from his care and from his benevolent love. But those who fear him are near to him [cf. Ps. 84.10], and his providence surrounds them and guards them:
21:9 Իսկ թերեւս ասիցես դու, թէ ո՞ւր պահէ զերկիւղածս իւր. զի որ ի ձեռս մեր անկան՝ չարչարեցան եւ մեռան, եւ մեք ըստ կամաց մերոց դատեցաք զնոսա:	21:9 But perhaps you will say: ’Where does he guard his worshippers? For those who fell into our hands were tortured and killed, and we judged them according to our own desires. ’:
21:10 Տե՛ս զի կամեցաւ Աստուած զհանգիստ մահու մարդկան, եւ ի միւսանգամ գալստեան փառացն երեւեցուցանէ՝ տալ զբարիսն սիրելեաց իւրոց եւ այնոցիկ որ ճանաչենն եւ առնեն զկամս նորա:	21:10 See that God desired the repose of death for men, and at his second and glorious coming he will reveal [cf. Acts 3.20] and give blessings to his beloved and to those who recognize him and do his will:
21:11 Այլ տե՛ս դու զայս, թէ զիա՛րդ զաւրութեամբ Աստուածութեան իւրոյ պահեաց հաստատուն զսուրբ վկայսն սիրելիսն, եւ ոչ նեղութիւնք բազումք երկմտեցուցին զմի ոք ի նոցանէն:	21:11 But see this, how by the power of his divinity he kept firm his beloved holy martyrs; nor did many tribulations make a single one of them lose heart:
21:12 Եւ ապրեցոյց զսուրբ զերանելին Հռիփսիմէ ընկերաւքն հանդերձ ի ձերոյ պղծութենէ եւ յանաւրէնութենէ:	21:12 And he saved the holy and blessed Rhipsime and her companions from your impurity and impiety:
21:13 Արդ՝ պատրանք մեքենայից թշնամւոյն, որ ի սկզբանէ իսկ խաբեցին պատրեցին զմարդիկ եւ կորստական ճանապարհացն ուղեւորս հաստատեցին:	21:13 Now see how the deceit of the enemy’s machinations, which from the beginning beguiled and deceived men [cf. Eph. 4.14], made them travelers on the path to destruction:
21:14 Եւ կամ զիմ իսկ զանարժանութիւնս, զի ո՛րպէս բարերարութեամբն իւրով արժանի արար պատրաստել զիս՝ չարչարել վասն անուան իւրոյ մեծի. եւ ետ ինձ համբերել, զի հասուսցէ զիս ի վիճակսն երկնաւորս, որպէս ասաց իսկ մեծ առաքեալն Պաւղոս, զոր հասցէ ձեզ ճանաչել, եւ ի նմին իսկ եւ ի նորուն բանս վայելել մարդասիրութեամբն Քրիստոսի, թէ Աւրհնեալ է այն, որ արժանիս արար զմեզ՝ հասանել ի մասն ժառանգութեան սրբոցն ի լոյս:	21:14 Or see my unworthiness, and how by his benevolence he made me worthy and prepared me to suffer for his great name’s sake. And he gave me endurance, to bring me to the heavenly inheritance, as the great apostle Paul said [cf. Acts 26.18; Col. 1.12] - whom you could recognize and at whose words you could rejoice through the benevolence of Christ: ’Blessed is he who made us worthy to attain the portion of the inheritance of the saints in light:
21:15 Եւ արդարեւ հասաք պարծանաւք ի խաչն Քրիստոսի, զի չարչարանաւքն Քրիստոսի վայելիցեմք ի նորա կամս եւ ի նորին վարդապետութեանն:	21:15 And truly we have attained gloriously the cross of Christ, that by the passion of Christ we may enjoy his will and his teaching:
21:16 Արդ՝ զնա ծանիջիք, որ զձեզ ի խաւարէն կոչեաց յիւր սքանչելի լոյսն փառաց. մատիջի՛ք առաջի աթոռոյ շնորհաց նորա, եւ գտջիք զողորմութիւն ի նմանէ. եւ ի բաց թաւթափեսջիք զամենայն աղտ չարեաց անաւրէնութեան. լուասջի՛ք զանձինս ձեր կենդանի ջրովն, եւ զփառաց լուսոյ զպատմուճանն արժանի լինիջիք զգենուլ յանձինս ձեր:	21:16 Now recognize him who called you from darkness to the wonderful light of his glory [cf. I Pet. 2.9], Approach the throne of his grace and you will obtain mercy from him [cf. Heb. 4.16]. Throw off every stain of evil lawlessness. Wash your souls with living water [cf. Heb. 10.22], and you will become worthy to clothe your souls in robes of glorious light:
21:17 Այլ վասն սրբոյն Հռիփսիմեայ դուք իսկ ինքնին գիտէք, թէ ո՛րպէս պահեաց զնա Տէր եւ ապրեցոյց ի ձեռաց ձերոց, ի պղծութենէ անաւրէնութեան:	21:17 But as for saint Rhipsime, you yourselves know how the Lord preserved her and saved her from your hands, from impious pollution:
21:18 Եւ դու ինքնին գիտես զչափ քաջութեան ուժոյ պնդութեան ոսկերաց քոց. զիա՞րդ եղեր տկարացեալ առաջի աղջկան միոջ. զի պահեաց զնա զաւրութիւն ամենատեառն Քրիստոսի:	21:18 And you yourself know the measure of the strength and firmness of your own bones, how you became weakened in front of a single girl. For the power of the Lord of all, Christ, preserved her:
21:19 Իսկ վասն իմ դու իսկ գիտես, զի հնգետասան ամ է իմ՝ զի կայի ես ի խաւարչուտ ի խոր յանհնարին վիրապին. ի մէջ աւձիցն էր բնակութիւն իմ, եւ վասն ահին Տեառն ոչ երբեք մեղան ինձ. եւ ոչ զարհուրեցայ ի նոցանէ, եւ ոչ երկեաւ սիրտ իմ. զի յուսացեալ էի ի Տէր Աստուած արարիչ ամենայնի:	21:19 And as for me, you know that for fifteen years I have been in the dark and incredibly deep pit, dwelling amidst snakes - yet for fear of the Lord they never harmed me, nor was I terrified of them nor was my heart dismayed. For I hoped in the Lord God the creator of all:
21:20 Այլ վասն այսորիկ գիտեմ, զի տգիտութեամբ արարէք զոր ինչ արարէքն:	21:20 But this I know, that it was in ignorance that you did what you did:
21:21 Բայց արդ՝ դարձարո՛ւք եւ ծաներո՛ւք զՏէր, զի ողորմեսցի եւ կեցուսցէ զձեզ. եւ զսպանեալ կենդանիսն բարեխաւս արարէք. զի կենդանիք են եւ չ են մեռեալք. եւ ծաներո՛ւք զԱստուած, զի նա ինքն է Տէր ամենայնի. եւ ի բաց թողէք այսուհետեւ զպղծութեան պաշտամունսդ, զքարեղէն եւ զփայտեղէն, զարծաթեղէն եւ զոսկեղէն պղնձաձոյլ պատկերացդ, զի սուտ են եւ սնոտի:	21:21 Nevertheless, turn now and recognize the Lord [cf. Heb. 8.11], that he may have mercy on you and give you life. Call upon those whom you killed, but who are alive, as intercessors; for they are alive and are not dead. Recognize God, for he is Lord of all. Abandon henceforth the foul worship of images of stone and wood, silver and gold and bronze, which are false and vain:
21:22 Եւ ո՞չ զայդ իսկ ասացի ձեզ վաղագոյն վասն մոլորութեանդ ձերոյ, թէ մառախուղ ստուերացն խաւարին թանձրութեան նստեալ է ի վերայ ձերոյ աչաց սրտին, ոչ կարացեալ հայել իմանալ, ածել զմտաւ, եւ զԱրարիչն ճանաչել:	21:22 Did I not tell you earlier about your error that a fog of thick and murky darkness has settled over the eyes of your heart [cf. Is. 60.2; Ez. 34.12], so that you are unable to see, comprehend, consider or recognize the creator:
21:23 Արդ՝ թէ ի ձէնջ ես ուղղութիւն ինչ տեսանէի՝ առ Աստուածութիւնն պաշտամամբ մերձենալ՝ ոչ դադարէի զցայգ եւ զցերեկ աղաչել վասն ձեր, զի մի՛ կորիցէք:	21:23 Now if I were to see in you some inclination to approach the divinity piously, I would not cease to pray night and day on your behalf that you perish not:
21:24 Այլ վասն բազում մարդասիրութեան Արարչին, որ անքնին եւ անպատում է առ արարածս իւր, որ երկայնմտութեամբ ներէ թողու անսայ խնայէ, վասն բազում գթութեան իւրոյ:	21:24 For the great benevolence of the creator towards his creatures is inscrutable and ineffable; he is long suffering in forgiving, pardoning, nourishing and caring because of his great mercy:
21:25 Որ յաւուրցն առաջնոց թոյլ ետ գնալ մարդկան ըստ կամաց իւրեանց, որպէս եւ ասէն իսկ. Բարձի թողի զնոսա՝ երթալ զհետ կամաց սրտից իւրեանց:	21:25 From the first days he allowed men to walk according to their own wishes, as scripture says: ’I have permitted them to follow the wishes of their own hearts:
21:26 Եւ գնացին նոքա ըստ կամս անձանց իւրեանց:	21:26 and they went according to their own desires’:
21:27 Այլ այժմիկ սկսեալ է կոչել զձեզ յիւր փառսն եւ յանեղծութիւն, լինել ձեզ ժառանգաւոր յաւէժ կենդանութեանն որ ոչն անցանէ:	21:27 But now he has begun to call you to his own glory and incorruptibility [cf. II Tim. 1.10], for you to become heirs of the eternal life that passes not away:
21:28 Վասն որոյ իսկ զիւր վկայսն սիրելիս առաքեաց առ ձեզ. որք ի վկայելն իւրեանց վկայեցին զմիասնական տէրութիւնն Երրորդական՝ ընդ ամենայն ի վերայ ամենայնի զԱստուած, որ նա ինքն է յաւիտեանս յաւիտենից. արքայութիւն նորա արքայութիւն յաւիտենից, եւ տէրութեան նորա վախճան ոչ գոյ:	21:28 For that reason, he sent his beloved martyrs to you; who in their martyrdom bore witness to the con- substantial majesty of the Trinity, God with all and above all, who exists for all eternity. His kingdom is an eternal kingdom, and of his rule there is no end:
21:29 Եւ զմահն իւրեանց եդին կնիք հաւատարիմ հաստատական՝ իւրեանց ճշմարտութեան հաւատոց. որոց ահաւասիկ եւ ճառք ի միջի ձերում պատմին. որք կենդանի են առ Աստուած եւ բարեխաւս տաւնողացն, որ մաղթեմք բարեխաւս ունել զնոսա առ Աստուած:	21:29 They made their death a faithful and firm seal of the truth of their faith [cf. Rom. 4.11], the account of which is now being related in your midst. They are alive with God and intercede for those who commemorate them; we pray to have their intercession with God:
21:30 Քանզի վասն Աստուծոյ մեռան՝ կարող են զմեռելութիւն բազմաց կենդանացուցանել:	21:30 Because they died for God, they can turn the death of many into life:
21:31 Վասն այսորիկ նոքաւք հաշտեցարո՛ւք առ Աստուած, ի ձեռն մահուան Որդւոյն Աստուծոյ. վասն զի Որդին Աստուծոյ մեռաւ, զի զմեռելութիւն արարածոց կենդանացուսցէ. իսկ սոքա մեռան, զի վկայք լիցին Աստուածութեան նորա:	21:31 Therefore, through them be reconciled to God by means of the death of the Son of God [cf. Rom. 5.10]. For the Son of God died to vivify the mortality of creatures [cf. Rom. 8.11]; whereas they died to become witnesses to his Godhead:
21:32 Եւ զի ոչ եթէ առանց իւրոյ մահուանն կենդանութիւն տալ մեզ ոչ կարէր, այլ զի մեծացուսցէ զարարածս իւրով յանարգութիւն իջանելովն. զի զանարգս բարձրացուսցէ իւրովն իբրեւ զմեզ լինելովն:	21:32 Not indeed that he was unable to give life without dying himself, but in order to magnify the creatures by his own descent to humility, and to elevate the humble by his becoming like us:
21:33 Իսկ ոչ եթէ առանց սոցա վկայութեան չ լինէր արդեաւք հաւատարիմ, այլ զի մեծասցին սոքա որ սիրեցին զնա:	21:33 Not indeed that he could not be believed without their testimony, but that those who loved him might magnify him:
21:34 Եւ զմեր շունչս պահեալ ի մարմնի մերում. զի թէպէտ եւ հասին մեզ նեղութիւնք մարմնոյ վշտաց եւ անհնարին ցաւոց, աւելի տանջեալ քան զամենայն մարդիկ. զիա՞րդ հնար էր միաւրեայ տոկալ մարդկային բնութեանս մարմնոյ այնմ ահագին վտանգի չարչարանացն:	21:34 And he preserved our breath in our body, although there came upon us afflictions of bodily sufferings and terrible pains. We were tormented more than any other men. How was it possible for human bodily nature to endure for one day the fearful severity of those tortures:
21:35 Կամ թէ կեցցէ՞ արդեաւք մարդ լոկ միաւրեայ ժամանակի յանհնարին ի խոր վիրապի անդ յայնմիկ, յորում թաղեալն կայի ես ի մէջ աւձիցն իբրեւ ի շեղջի, եւ եռային զմարմնովք իմովք, պատեալ կային շուրջ զինեւ եւ կայտռային զանդամովք իմովք. սակայն մեծասքանչ ողորմութիւն Տեառն պահեաց զիս կենդանի:	21:35 Or how could a man live for a single day in that terribly deep pit in which I was buried amidst piles of snakes that swarmed around my body and wrapped themselves around me and crawled over my limbs? But the wonderful mercy of the Lord preserved me alive:
21:36 Եւ որում ոչ եւս էի արժանի՝ զբանս մշակութեան բժշկութեան աւգտի ոգւոց եւ մարմնոց մշակեմք աւասիկ ի միջի ձերում. բժիշկ ոգւոց եւ մարմնոց ձերոց պատրաստեցաք՝ զձեր աւգուտն ձեզ մատուցանել:	21:36 And of what I was previously unworthy, behold we now serve among your words of healing labor and profit for souls and bodies. We have been made the doctor of your souls and bodies to offer you help:
21:37 ՅԱստուծոյ ի բարերարութենէ անտի սկսցուք զպատգամս երկնաւորս ձեզ ջամբել. զի եթէ լուիջիք բանին իրաւանց, քարոզութեան Աւետարանին, հրամանաց Արարչին ամենայնի՝ փրկեալք սրբեալք լինիջիք ի փոքր պատուհասէդ, եւ ի յաւիտենական կեանսն վայելեսջիք. բանին Աստուածութեան լուիջիք, եւ զբարութիւն երկնից արքայութեանն յանձինս ձեր ընկալջիք:	21:37 By the benevolence of God let us begin to nourish you with heavenly words [cf. Ez. 3.2]. For if you will listen to the word of truth, the message of the gospel and the commands of the creator of all, you will be delivered and cleansed from your minor punishment and you will enjoy eternal life. Hear the divine word, and you will receive in your souls the blessing of the kingdom of heaven:
21:38 Միայն թէ յակամայ տգիտութենէ մեղացդ, ի քարապաշտ ի փայտապաշտութենէդ սրբեալ լիջիք, եւ զանճառ բարիսն Աստուծոյ յանձինս ձեր ընդունել մարթասջիք. ապա եւ սուրբ վկայքն Աստուծոյ, զոր դուքն չարչարեցէք՝ վասն ձեր եւ նոքա բարեխաւսութիւն կարեն մատուցանել. եւ մեր բանքս եւ ճառքս եւ ջանս եւ վաստակս ձեզ յաւգուտ սերմանեսցի. բարեկեաց շատակեաց կենաւք զձեզ յերկրի վայելեցուսցէ, եւ յերկինս հանդերձեալ կենացն զձեզ ժառանգորդս արասցէ:	21:38 Only if you are cleansed of the unwilling ignorance of your sins, from the worship of stones and wood, will you be able to receive in your souls the ineffable blessings of God. Then the holy martyrs of God, whom you tortured, will be able to offer intercession on your behalf; and our words and discourses and effort and labor will be sown as profit for you, they will let you enjoy on earth long and happy lives, and make you heirs in heaven to eternal life:
21:39 Ապա եթէ ոչ կամիցիք լսել քարոզութեան բանին կենաց՝ աստէն հարեալ վրիժուքն չարաչար հարուածովք զձեզ սատակեսցէ, եւ ի ձեռն աւտար թշնամեաց զձեզ դատեսցի, եւ միանգամայն իսկ զքէն վրիժուցն հանեալ՝ ի մահ զձեզ մատնիցէ:	21:39 But if you refuse to hear the preaching of the word of life, then he will strike and kill you with vengeful and cruel blows, and he will judge you by means of foreign enemies, and also taking revenge on you will bring you to death:
