11:252 Քանզի յիշեցուցանեմք քեզ զժամանակն Շապհոյ արքայից արքայի, որ էր հայր հաւուն քո Յազկերտի, եւ ետ նմա Աստուած զերկիրն Հայոց ի ծառայութիւն սովին աւրինաւք, որով եւ մեք իսկ վարիմք այժմ. եւ հարքն մեր եւ հաւք հարցն մերոց կացին նմա ի ծառայութեան վաստակս, եւ սիրով կատարէին զամենայն հրաման բանի նորա, եւ բազում անգամ ի նմանէ մեծապարգեւք լինէին:

 11:252 We remind you of the time of Shapuh, king of kings, who was the father of your grandfather Yazkert and to whom God gave Armenia in subjection under the same religion as that by which we still live today. Our fathers and great-grandfathers rendered him service and loyally fulfilled all his commands, often receiving generous presents from him:

11:253 Եւ յայնց ժամանակաց մինչեւ ի քո հայրենի աթոռդ՝ եւ մեք զնոյն ծառայութիւն ծառայեցաք. բայց թերեւս քեզ լաւագոյն քան զառաջնոցն:

 11:253 From those times until your accession to your ancestral throne we have performed the same service, but perhaps more so for you than for your predecessors:

11:254 Զայս ասելով ցուցանէին զքաջութիւն արութեանցն լաւագոյն քան զառաջնոցն ըստ զինուորութեան կարգի:

 11:254 By saying this they indicated that their valiant deeds in military service had been superior to those of their ancestors:

11:255 Իսկ զմտից եւ զսակից, եւ որ այլ եւս էին հարկ աշխարհին, բազմագոյն քան առ հարբն նորա երթայր յարքունիս:

 11:255 Indeed, the amount of revenue and dues and all the other taxes of the country going to the court was greater than in the time of his father:

11:256 Նա եւ ի սուրբ եկեղեցւոյն, որ էր ազատ ի Քրիստոս ըստ կարգի նախնեացն մերոց ի սկզբանէ, եւ դու ընդ հարկաւ եդիր. եւ մեք առ սէր քոյոյ տէրութեանդ ոչ ինչ ընդդիմացաք քեզ:

 11:256 Likewise, on the holy church, which was free in Christ from the beginning according to the custom of our ancestors, you also imposed taxes. And we, in our loyalty to your rule, did not oppose you:

11:257 Արդ վասն է՞ր յուզեալ իցէ ցասումնս այս ի վերայ մեր. ասա դու մեզ զպատճառս վնասուն. եթէ աւրէ՞նքն մեր պատճառք իցեն անվաստակ լինելոյ առաջի քո:

 11:257 Now why has this anger been stirred up against us? Tell us the reasons for the maltreatment. Is our religion the cause of our being without merit in your sight:

11:258 Իսկ չարադեւն լի ամենայն նենգութեամբ՝ զերեսս ի մի կոյս դարձուցեալ եւ ասէ. «Վնաս համարիմ ընդունել ի գանձ արքունի զհարկս աշխարհին ձերոյ, եւ անաւգուտ զքաջութիւն արութեան ձերոյ. քանզի տգիտաբար մոլորեալ էք ի ճշմարիտ աւրինացս մերոց, եւ զաստուածս անարգէք եւ զկրակ սպանանէք եւ զջուրս պղծէք, եւ զմեռեալս ի հող թաղելով զերկիր ապականէք, եւ քրպիկար չառնելով ոյժ տայք Հարամանոյ. եւ որ մեծ քան զամենայն, զի հանապազ ի կանայս ոչ մերձենայք. եւ մեծապէս լինի դիւաց խնդութիւն, չխրատելով ձեր եւ չպահելով զամենայն կարգս մոգաց:

 11:258 But the wicked demon, full of all deceit, turned his face to one side and note: “I consider it harm to receive into the royal treasury the tribute of your land, and your valiant deeds useless. For you have ignorantly gone astray from our true religion and have dishonored the gods; you have killed fire and defiled water; you have buried the dead in the ground and corrupted the earth; and by not performing pious duties, you strengthen Haraman. And what is worst, you do not regularly approach your wives. The demons have great joy when you disregard and do not observe all the institutions of the magi:

11:259 Տեսանեմ զձեզ իբրեւ զխաշինս ցրուեալս եւ վայրատեալս յանապատի, եւ յոյժ զեղջ է մտաց իմոց, թէ գուցէ աստուածքն բարկացեալ վասն ձեր՝ ի մէնջ վրէժս առնուցուն:

 11:259 I see you as sheep scattered and lost in the wilderness. And I have great scruples that perhaps the gods, in their anger at you, will take vengeance from us:

11:260 Այլ դուք եթէ կամիք կեալ եւ կեցուցանել զանձինս ձեր եւ մեծարանաւք անդրէն յուղարկիլ, զոր ասացի՝ վաղիւ վաղվաղակի կատարեցէք:

 11:260 But if you wish to live and save yourselves and be sent back in honor, do what I have said immediately:

11:261 Յայնժամ երանելի նախարարքն առ հասարակ զձայնս իւրեանց բարձին եւ ասեն յանդիման ամենեցուն. «Մի՛ դու, արքայ, եւ մի՛ զայդ այլ առ մեզ ասեր. քանզի ոչ է եկեղեցի շինուած մարդոյ, եւ ոչ տուրք արեգական, որպէս դուդ այլ ընդ այլոյ կարծես՝ թէ աստուած իցէ. ոչ միայն զի աստուած չէ, այլ եւ կենդանի չէ:

 11:261 Then the blessed princes in unison raised their voices and said before everyone: “Do not, O king, do not say that again to us. For the church is not the creation of man or the gift of the sun; not only is the latter not god, but it is not even alive as you in your confusion suppose:

11:262 Այլ եկեղեցիք ոչ են պարգեւք թագաւորաց, եւ ոչ արուեստ ճարտարութեանց, եւ ոչ գիւտք իմաստնոց, եւ ոչ աւար քաջութեան զինուորաց, եւ ոչ պատիր խաբէութիւնք դիւաց. նա եւ բնաւ իսկ ամենեւին զինչ եւ ասասցես յերկրաւորացս, կամ ի վեհից կամ ի վատթարաց, բնաւ ուրեք եկեղեցի ի նոցանէ ոչ գտցի:

 11:262 Churches are not the gifts of kings, or the invention of skill, or the discovery of the wise, or the booty of valiant soldiers, or the false deceits of demons. Similarly, whatever you say of earthly beings, whether grand or ignoble, nowhere is a church created by them to be found:

11:263 Այլ շնորհք են մեծին Աստուծոյ, ոչ միում ումեք ի մարդկանէ տուեալ, այլ ամենայն բանաւոր ազգաց, որք վիճակեալք են ի բնակութիւն ի ներքոյ արեգականս:

 11:263 But it is a gift of grace from the great God, not given to some individual man, but to all rational peoples whose lot it is to dwell under the sun:

11:264 Հիմունք նորա եդեալ են ի վերայ հաստատուն վիմի. ոչ ներքինք շարժել կարեն. եւ ոչ վերինք դրդուեցուցանել:

 11:264 Its foundations have been placed on a firm rock; powers below cannot shake it or powers above move it:

11:265 Եւ զոր երկինք եւ երկիր ոչ դողացուցանէ, մի՛ ոք ի մարդկանէ խրոխտասցի յաղթել նմա:

 11:265 What heaven and earth cannot topple, let no man boast of conquering:

11:266 Հա՛պա, որով աւրինակաւ զինչ կամիս առնել, կատարեա. պատրաստ եմք ամենեքեան առ ամենայն մեքենայս հարուածոցն տանջանաց, զոր սպառնացար. ոչ միայն ի չարչարել, այլ եւ ի մեռանել:

 11:266 So, in whatever manner you wish to treat us, do so. We are all ready for every contrivance of torments and tortures that you have threatened, ready not only to be tortured but even to die:

11:267 Եւ եթէ դարձեալ եւս զնոյն բանս հարցանես, ի միոջէ միոջէ լուիցես առաւել քան զդոյն պատասխանի:

 11:267 And if you were to ask the same questions again, you will hear from each one of us more than the present reply:

11:268 Յայնժամ դառնացեալ քան զլեղի թագաւորն՝ փլուզանէր անդէն ի փորին զծով կամաւոր մաղձոյն իւրոյ. եւ ընդ քիթսն եւ ընդ բերանն առ հասարակ գոլոշի ջերմախառն ելանէր, իբրեւ ի սաստիկ հնոցէ ծուխ թանձրացեալ:

 11:268 Then the king became more bitter than gall. He spewed forth the sea of the willful bile in his stomach; from his nose and mouth issued hot vapor like thick smoke from a heated furnace:

11:269 Եւ առ չհանդուրժել սրտին իւրոյ՝ կոտորէր զզաւրութիւն մարմնոյն, եւ ծակոտէր զբազմամթեր աման խորհրդոցն, ցրուէր եւ վատնէր զամենայն խորհումն նենգութեան:

 11:269 Unable to tame his heart he destroyed the strength of his body, pierced the overflowing vessel of his plans, and scattered and wasted all his deceitful thoughts:

11:270 Եւ զոր ոչ երբէք կամէր իւրոց սիրելեացն յայտնել, ակամայ առաջի ծառայիցն Քրիստոսի մերկանայր եւ դնէր զամենայն կարգաւ:

 11:270 And what he had never intended to reveal to his friends, unwillingly he revealed before the servants of Christ in its details:

11:271 Երեքկնէր եւ չորեքկնէր զանսուտ երդումն յարեգակն, եւ ասէր այսպէս. «Ոչ կարէք աւերել զանխաբ ամուրս իմ. եւ ոչ որում ցանկացեալդ էք՝ վաղվաղակի տամ գտանել ձեզ. այլ զամենեսեան զձեզ եւ որ ի գնդիս են՝ չարաչար կապանաւք ի Սագաստան տամ անցուցանել ընդ անճանապարհ տեղիս, որ եւ բազումք ի ձէնջ ի խորշակէ յերթալն սատակիցին, եւ մնացեալքն անկցին ի բերդս ամուրս եւ ի բանդս անելս:

 11:271 Three and four times he repeated his false oath to the sun, saying as follows: “You are unable to destroy my sure fortifications, nor shall I allow you to obtain immediately what you desire. But all of you and those in my army I shall exile in cruel bonds to Sagastan through roadless parts, where many of you will perish on the journey from the heat, and the survivors will be thrown into secure fortresses and inescapable prisons:

11:272 Եւ ի ձեր աշխարհն առաքեցից զաւրս անթիւս հանդերձ փղաւք, եւ զկին եւ զորդիս ի Խուժաստան տամ խաղացուցանել. եւ զեկեղեցիս եւ զոր անուանէք վկայարանս՝ քակեցից, քանդեցից եւ յապականութիւն դարձուցից. եւ եթէ ոք ընդդէմ դարձեալ գտցի, կոխան եղեալ գազանաց՝ անողորմ մեռանիցի:

 11:272 To your country I shall send an infinite army with elephants; your wives and children I shall have dispatched to Khuzhastan; your churches and what you call martyria I shall destroy, raze, and obliterate. And if anyone is found to resist, he will be trampled by wild beasts and die a merciless death:

11:273 Եւ զամենայն ասացեալս արարից եւ կատարեցից առ մնացորդս աշխարհին:

 11:273 All that I have said I shall perform and carry out on the survivors in your country:

11:274 Եւ վաղվաղակի հրամայէր զպատուական նախարարսն հանել մեծաւ անարգանաւք յերեսաց իւրոց. եւ զգուշութեամբ հրաման տուեալ դահճապետին՝ առանց կապանաց յիւրաքանչիւր վանս պահել, եւ ինքն զառածեալ անդրէն դառնայր անմխիթար տրտմութեամբ զաւթեւանս ագանէր:

 11:274 straightaway he ordered the honorable princes to be expelled from his presence in great dishonor. He strictly commanded the chief-executioner to guard them unbound in each one’s lodging, and the perverse one took up his residence in unconsolable sadness:

11:275 Իսկ հաւատացեալքն ճշմարտութեամբ ի Քրիստոս՝ ոչ ինչ երկմտութեամբ թերահաւատէին յառաջին խրատուէ սուրբ վարդապետացն իւրեանց. այլ տակաւին ի խնդիր էին հնարիցն, թէ ո՛րպէս զանձինս եւ զսիրելիս հանցեն ի մեծ նեղութենէն:

 11:275 But the true believers in Christ were not at all irresolute or doubtful of the earlier counsel of their holy teachers, but they sought further ways how they might extricate themselves and their loved ones from this great tribulation:
