10:226 Խոնարհեցաւ ի բարձր հպարտութենէն, եւ զվայրենացեալ սիրտն դարձոյց ի մարդկային բնութիւն. հայեցաւ եւ ետես զինքն լի տկարութեամբ. գիտաց եթէ զամենայն զոր կամի առնել՝ ոչ կարէ կատարել. վասն այնորիկ եւ դադարեաց յանդուգն յարձակմանէն, եւ լռեցոյց զմոլեգնոտաբար գոչումնն:

10:226 He was humbled from his lofty pride, and he restored his wild heart to human nature. He looked and saw himself full of weakness. He realized that he could not complete everything he wished to do. Therefore, he ceased his haughty aggression, and quieted his raging cries:

10:227 Եւ որ մեծաձայն բարբառով որոտայր, եւ եւս ահագին հրամանաւքն զհեռաւորս եւ զմերձաւորս դողացուցանէր, սկսաւ քաղցր եւ աղերս բանիւք խաւսել ընդ ամենեսեան եւ ասել:

10:227 He who had loudly thundered and by even more fearful commands had made those far and near quake, began to speak softly and to entreat everyone, saying:
|
10:228 Զի՞նչ ինչ վնաս գործեալ է իմ, եւ զո՞ր յանցս յանցուցեալ կամ առ ազգս կամ առ լեզուս կամ առ անձն իւրաքանչիւր:
|
10:228 What harm have I done, and what crime have I committed against any nation, or people, or individual:
|
10:229 Ո՞չ ահա բազում ուսմունք են յաշխարհիս Արեաց, եւ իւրաքանչիւր պաշտամունք յայտնի են. ո՞ երբէք նեղեաց պնդեաց դարձուցանել ի մի աւրէնս մոգութեան. մանաւանդ վասն աւրինաց քրիստոնէութեանն, որպէս հաստատուն եւ ճշմարիտ կացեալ են յիւրեանց դենին, նոյնպէս եւ առ մեզ լաւագոյն քան զամենայն կեշտսն նոքա երեւեալ են:

10:229 Are there not many creeds in the land of the Aryans, and is not the cult of each one openly performed? Who has ever forced or compelled anyone to accept the single religion of magism? Especially with regard to the Christian religion, just as they have been firm and true to their own religion, in such measure have they seemed to us superior to all other sects:

10:230 Եւ բիծ իսկ ոչ կարէ ոք դնել ընտրեալ աւրինաց նոցա. այլ զոյգ եւ հաւասար համարիմ դենիս մազդեզանց, որպէս եւ յարգեալ իսկ էին նոքա առ նախնեաւքն մերովք, զոր ես ինձէն իսկ յիշեմ առ հարբն իմով, որ նստէր ի մեծ գահոյս յայսմ:

10:230 No one can find any fault with their select religion. But I consider it equal and on a par with our Mazdean religion, just as it was respected in the time of our ancestors—as I myself remember in my father’s time when he sat on this noble throne:

10:231 Յորժամ սկսաւ անդաճել եւ քննել զամենայն ուսմունս եւ հաստատութեամբ ի վերայ եհաս, առաւել վեհ գտանէր զաւրէնս քրիստոնէից քան զամենեցուն. վասն այսորիկ մեծարեալք շրջէին ի Դրան արքունի, եւ առատաձեռն պարգեւաւք երահիկք լինէին ի նմանէ, եւ համարձակութեամբ շրջէին ընդ ամենայն երկիր:

10:231 When he began to examine and scrutinize all creeds and had understood them well, he found the Christian religion to be the most sublime of all. Therefore, the Christians were honored at the royal court and were blessed by him with liberal gifts; they freely traveled throughout the whole land:

10:232 Նա եւ որ գլխաւորքն էին քրիստոնէից, զոր եւ եպիսկոպոս անուանեն, ընծայից եւ պատարագաց արժանիս առնէր զնոսա:
|
10:232 Likewise, the leaders of the Christians, whom they call bishops, he treated as worthy of presents and offerings:
|
10:233 Եւ իբրեւ հաւատարիմ ոստիկանս յանձն առնէր նոցա զհեռաւոր մարզսն, եւ ոչ երբէք սխալ լինէր ի մեծամեծ իրացն արքունի:
|
10:233 And he entrusted to them as reliable officials the distant borderlands; and never did any mishap befall the great affairs of state:
|
10:234 Եւ դուք զմի զայն երբէք ոչ յիշեցէք, այլ հանապազաւր ձանձրացուցէք զլսելիս իմ, խաւսելով զնոցանէ զամենայն չարութիւն:
|
10:234 You never recalled a single one of these facts, but continuously wearied my ears by speaking all sorts of evil about them:
|
10:235 Տեսէք՝ զի ետուք գործել ինձ զոր ինչ ոչ կամէի, եւ եղեն վնասք մեծամեծք ի սահմանսն ի մէջ երկուց անհաշտ թշնամեաց:
|
10:235 See—you have made me do what I did not wish, and great damage has occurred on the borders between two implacable enemies:
|
10:236 Եւ մեք դեռ ի հեռաւոր ճանապարհի, եւ ոչ մի ինչ գործ պատերազմիս ի գլուխ երթեալ, եւ դուք աստէն յիմում տանս յարուցէք ի վերայ իմ պատերազմ, որոյ չարագոյն եւս լինելոց է կատարածն իւր քան զարտաքին թշնամեացն:

10:236 While we were on a distant campaign, before we had brought any military operation to a successful conclusion, you raised war against me in my own house, the result of which will be even worse than war against outside enemies:
|
10:237 Զայս ամենայն եւ առաւել քան զսոյն խաւսէր ընդ ամենայն աւագանին, եւ զվնասս յանցանացն արկանէր զմոգպետաւն եւ զմոգաւքն:
|
10:237 Such words and more like them he addressed to the nobility, laying the blame for these faults on the chief-magus and magi:
|
10:238 Եւ ամենայն վզուրկքն եւ պատուական նախարարքն, որ նստէին յատենին եւ ունկն դնէին յեղյեղուկ լեզուի նորա, ամաչեցեալ կորանային եւ ընդ երկիր պշնուին, եւ զգլուխ ի վեր ոչ կարէին համբառնալ:

10:238 All the great and honorable nobles who were sitting in the Council and attending to his disingenuous speech bent down in shame and stared at the ground, unable to lift up their heads:
|
10:239 Բայց սակաւք ի նոցանէ զմիտս հաճելով՝ ասէին զայս. «Այո, արքայ քաջ, այդ այդպէս է որպէս ասացերդ, եւ արդ կարես զամենայն ուղղութեամբ նուաճել. չիք ինչ այն որ ըստ քո կամսդ արտաքս կարէ ելանել. զի տուեալ է քեզ աստուածոցն, զի զամենայն զոր եւ կամիս՝ կարես առնել:

10:239 But a few of them, humoring him, spoke as follows: “Yes, noble king, it is just as you have said. But now you can successfully arrange everything. There is nothing which is beyond the reach of your will, for the gods have granted you power to do everything you wish:

10:240 Մի՛ նեղեալ տագնապիր յանձն քո եւ հարկաներ զմիտս մեր ամենեցուն. թերեւս եւ դիւր իցեն հնարք իրացն կատարածի:
|
10:240 Do not be distressed or grieve yourself or afflict the minds of us all. Perhaps there may be an easy solution to the matter:
|
10:241 Երկայնամիտ լեր, եւ համբերութեամբ թողացո մարդկանդ անդրէն զքրիստոնէութիւն, եւ դոքաւք զստամբակսն ածցես ի հաւանութիւն:
|
10:241 Be long-suffering, and patiently leave these men to their Christianity; through them you will bring these obstinate ones to submission:
|
10:242 Հաճոյ թուեցաւ բանն առաջի թագաւորին. եւ անդէն վաղվաղակի կոչէր զառաջեաւ յամենայն ազգացն որ ունէին զքրիստոնէութիւնն, որ ի զաւրու նորա էին, եւ բռնաբար արգելեալ էր զնոսա, զի մի՛ ոք իշխան լիցի յանդիման պաշտել զԱստուած:

10:242 This speech seemed pleasing to the king. He immediately summoned before him those in his army, of all nations, who observed Christianity and whom he had forcibly prevented from daring to worship God in his presence:

10:243 Քանզի որ ընդդէմ կացին, չարչարեաց եւ արգել ի նոցանէ զյայտնի պաշտաւնն, եւ ոմանց ոմանց ակամայ երկիր ետ պագանել արեգական, եւ նստոյց ի սուգ տրտմութեան զամենայն զաւրականսն:

10:243 For those who had opposed him, he had tortured and prevented from open worship; and some he had made worship the sun against their will, inflicting much sorrow on all the soldiers:
|
10:244 Իսկ այն աւր հրամայէր անդրէն համարձակութեամբ ըստ առաջին կարգին հաստատուն կալ յաւրէնս քրիստոնէութեանն:
|
10:244 But that day he commanded them to remain firm in their Christian religion according to their former usage, without hesitation:
|
10:245 Իսկ որք յանցաւորքն էին, ոչ կամէին վաղվաղակի առանց մեծի ապաշխարութեան գալ եւ խառնել ի կարգ քրիստոնէութեան, հրամայէր թագաւորն՝ զի բռնի կալցին եւ տարցեն յեկեղեցին իւրեանց:

10:245 However, those who were sinners did not wish immediately, without much repentance, to come and join the Christian ranks; so, the king ordered them to be forcibly seized and taken to their churches:
|
10:246 Եւ երիցանցն համարձակէր, որպէս զիարդ եւ գիտիցեն՝ ըստ կարգին իւրեանց արասցեն:
|
10:246 and he let the priests deal with them according to their rites as they might judge best:
|
10:247 Եւ զհատեալ ռոճիկսն կարգէր անդրէն իւրաքանչիւր, եւ զարգելեալ բազմականսն ի նոցանէ՝ ի տեղի հրամայէր մատուցանել, եւ հանապազորդ յարքունիս մտանել ոչ արգելոյր զնոսա. եւ զամենայն որ զիարդ եւ կարգեալ էին յառաջագոյն՝ անդրէն յաւրինէր:

10:247 The allowances that had been cut off he restored to each one; the seats at the table that had been denied them he ordered to be restored; and he did not prevent their continuous access to the palace. He reestablished everything according to its former usage:
|
10:248 Խոնարհէր եւ խաւսէր ընդ նոսա սիրով ըստ առաջին սովորութեանն:
|
10:248 He humbled himself and spoke with them in a friendly way according to his previous custom:
|
10:249 Եւ իբրեւ զայս ամենայն արար եւ կարգեաց, յանդիման նոցա թողութեան հրովարտակս առաքէր ընդ ամենայն երկիր իշխանութեան տէրութեան իւրոյ վասն քրիստոնէից:
|
10:249 When he had completed all these arrangements, in their presence he sent edicts of amnesty throughout the whole area of his empire concerning the Christians:
|
10:250 Եթէ ի կապանս ոք կայցէ, արքունի հրամանաւ արձակեալ լիցի. եւ եթէ ինչք ուրուք յափշտակեալ իցեն, դարձցին անդրէն:
|
10:250 If any is in bonds, by royal command he is to be released. If anyone’s possessions have been usurped, they are to be returned to him:
|
