9:201 Իսկ իբրեւ զայս կատարեցին եւ արարին իւրեանց մեծապէս հաստատութիւն, եւ դեռ անդէն ի տեղւոջն զետեղեալ էին խաղաղութեամբ, գուժկան հասանէր յաշխարհէն Հայոց, զճակատ հարեալ եւ զաւձիս պատառեալ վասն ապստամբին Վասակայ. «Յետս կացեալ յուխտէն քրիստոնէութեան եւ աւերեալ զբազում տեղիս Հայոց աշխարհին, մանաւանդ զձմերոցս արքունի, որ կայանք զաւրացն էին, զԳառնին եւ զԵրամաւնս եւ զԴրասխանակերտն՝զմեծ դաստակերտն, զՎարդանաշատն եւ զամուրն Աւշական, զՓառախոտն, զՍարդեանսն, զՁողակերտն աւան եւ զբերդն Արմաւրի, զԿուաշն աւան, զԱրուճն, զԱշնակն եւ զամենայն ոտն Արագածու, եւ զնահանգն Արտաշատու եւ զԱրտաշատն ինքնին գլխովին, եւ զամենայն գեւղս եւ զաւանս, որ շուրջ զնովաւ էին, առեալ աւերեալ եւ հրձիգ արարեալ, եւ զամենեցուն ձեր զընտանիս փախուցեալ մերժեալ յիւրաքանչիւր բնակութենէ:

 9:201 When this had been completed and mutually confirmed and while they were still peacefully settled in that spot, a bearer of sad news arrived from Armenia, beating his forehead and tearing his collar because of the rebellious Vasak: “He has abandoned the Christian covenant and ruined many places in Armenia, notably the royal winter residence, which was the army’s quarters. He has also seized, destroyed, and set afire Garni and Eramunk and the great estate of Draskhanakert; Vardanashat and the fortress of Awshakan; Parakhot, Sardeank, the town of Dzoḷakert, and the fortress of Armavir; the town of Kuash, Aruch, Ashnak, and all Aragatsotn; the province of Artashat with Artashat itself and all the villages and towns in its neighborhood. He has put to flight all of your families and expelled them from their homes:

9:202 Ձեռն արկեալ եւ ի սուրբ եկեղեցիսն, տարեալ եւ զսուրբ սպաս եկեղեցւոյն սեղանոյ. գերի վարեալ զընտանիս քահանայից, եւ զնոսին կապեալ եւ եդեալ ի բանդի. եւ ինքն սփռեալ տարածեալ ասպատակաւ աւերէ զերկիրն ամենայն:

 9:202 He has also laid hands on the holy churches and seized the holy altar vessels. He has led away captive priests’ families, bound them and imprisoned them. He has extended his ravaging and ruin over the entire country:

9:203 Եւ գունդն, որ էր ի կողմանս Ատրպատականի, ոչ ժամանեաց ձեռն տալ ի միջոց աշխարհին:

 9:203 The army on the borders of Atrpatakan did not arrive in time to support the interior of the country:

9:204 Եւ զաւրքն, որ անդ մնացեալ էին, խոյս տուեալ յանաւրինէն մերժեցան յեզր աշխարհին, եւ դեռ պահեն ընդ ձեզ զուխտ միաբանութեան սիրոյն Քրիստոսի:

 9:204 while the army which had remained there fled from the lawless one and moved off to the frontier. But they still keep with you the covenant of unity in Christ’s love:

9:205 Բայց այն որ ընդ նմայն էին՝ են ոմանք, որ փախեան յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս, եւ բազումք այն են, որ զհետ մոլորեցան նորա ամբարշտութեանն:

 9:205 Of those with him, a few have fled to their own places, but most have followed after his impiety:

9:206 Չու արարեալ ի տեղւոջէ անտի՝դառնալ անդրէն յաշխարհն Հայոց մեծաւ ստիպով եւ բազում աւարաւ եւ անչափ մեծութեամբ, եւ անտրտում ուրախութեամբ երգս ի բերան առեալ եւ ասէին ձայնիւ. Խոստովան եղերուք Տեառն, զի բարի է, զի յաւիտեան է ողորմութիւն նորա. ո՛ եհար զազգս մեծամեծս եւ սպան զիշխանս հզաւրս, զի բարի է, զի յաւիտեան է ողորմութիւն նորա:

 9:206 They set out from that place to return with all speed to Armenia, bearing a vast booty and immeasurable wealth. In joyful gladness they sang aloud: “Acknowledge the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy is eternal. He has struck great nations and slain mighty princes. For he is good; for his mercy is eternal:

9:207 Եւ զայս սաղմոս երգելով մինչեւ ի վախճան կատարեալ աղաւթիւք փառատրութիւն սուրբ Երրորդութեանն մատուցանէին:

 9:207 Singing this psalm right to the end, in their prayers they offered praises to the Holy Trinity:

9:208 Անդ յանձանձէր ածէր զաւրավարն զկաց եւ զմնաց զաւրականին առաջապահաւք եւ վերջապահաւք, կողմապահաւք ողջ եւ առողջ հասուցեալ յաւուրս երեսուն մերձ ի սահմանս հայրենի աշխարհին:

 9:208 Their general himself took responsibility for the rear ranks; posting guards to the front and rear and the sides, he brought the army back safe and sound in thirty days near to the borders of their native land:

9:209 Ազդ եղեւ ուրացեալն Վասակայ եւ իշխանացն որ ընդ նմա էին՝ քաջութիւն նահատակութեան գնդին Վարդանայ յաշխարհին Աղուանից, եւ միաբանութիւնն եւս Հոնաց:

 9:209 News reached the apostate Vasak and the princes in his company of the heroic valor of Vardan’s force in Albania, and also of their alliance with the Huns:

9:210 Մինչչեւ յանդիման եղեալ էին միմեանց, զգիշեր մի աւգնական գտեալ նորա՝ փախստեայ անկանէր յամուրս իւրոյ աշխարհին. եւ այնպէս տագնապաւ մերժեցաւ, զգերի եւ զաւարն զոր առեալ էր յԱյրարատ գաւառէ, ակամայ զիւրն եւս ի վերայ եթող եւ փախեաւ:

 9:210 Before they encountered each other, taking advantage of night he fled for refuge into the secure areas of his own territory. Departing in such great haste, all the captives and plunder that he had brought from the province of Ayrarat as well as his own property he unwillingly abandoned in his flight:

9:211 Եւ քանզի ժամանակ ձմերայնւոյ հասեալ էր, եւ զռոճիկս՝ թշնամեաց գնդին հարեալ էր, ոչ կարէր զմիով տեղեաւ համագունդ զաւրսն դարմանել. այլ սփռէր տարածանէր ընդ գաւառս գաւառս աշխարհին առ ի հանգիստ ձմերոցին:

 9:211 Because wintertime had arrived and the enemy troops had seized the provisions, he, Vardan was unable to supply all his forces in one area; so, he spread them through various provinces of the land for their winter quarters:

9:212 Պատուէր հրամանի տայր պատրաստական լինել կազմութեամբ առ ժամանակ գարնայնոյն:

 9:212 He commanded them to be ready and equipped for spring:

9:213 Եւ զսակաւս ի գնդէն յաւագ նախարարացն գործակից իւր թողեալ, բռնանայր ի վերայ՝ ունելով զթագաւորանիստ տեղիսն:

 9:213 A few of the group of senior nobles he kept in support, and he seized and occupied the royal estates:

9:214 Եւ գունդս գունդս արձակէր յաշխարհն Սիւնեաց, առնոյր եւ աւերէր զբազում գաւառս. եւ այնպէս ի նեղ արկանէր զնա եւ զամենայն զաւրսն որ ընդ նմա էին, զի զէշս եւ զձիս մեռելոտիս առ սովոյն վտանգի անխտիր ուտէին:

 9:214 He sent numerous forces into the land of Siunik, capturing and destroying many provinces. He put him (Vasak) and all the troops with him into such straits that they were forced to eat donkeys and dead horses in the extremity of their hunger:

9:215 Եւ բազում հարուածս հասուցանէր ի վերայ ուրացելոյն. մինչեւ ժողով սուրբ եպիսկոպոսացն եւ ամենայն ուխտ քահանայութեանն դառնապէս արտասուս իջուցանէին ի վերայ չարաչար վշտացելոցն, որ բոկ եւ հետի վարէին զարս եւ զկանայս փափկասունս, եւ բազում տղայք զքարի հարեալ ընկեցան յանցս ճանապարհաց:

 9:215 And many sufferings did he inflict on the apostate. Finally, a synod of holy bishops and of all the clergy deplored with bitter tears the cruel tribulations, which forced men and tender women to go barefoot without a mount, and many children to fall and hit the rocks along the paths:

9:216 Իբրեւ այս ամենայն աջողութիւն լինէր երկիւղածացն Աստուծոյ, ամենայն եպիսկոպոսունք եւ երիցունք պատուէր հրամանի տուեալ աշխարհին, զողջոյն ամիսն Քաղոց պահաւք եւ աղաւթիւք առնել խնդրուածս առ Աստուած, եւ զտաւն պատերազմացն յաղթութեան խառնել ի սուրբ տաւն յայտնութեանն Քրիստոսի, զի անխափան կացցէ մեծ յիշատակարանս այս ընդ աստուածային անանց տաւնին:

 9:216 Since the fearers of God had gained such success, all the bishops and priests commanded the country to spend the whole month of Kalots making supplications to God with fasting and prayers, and to celebrate the victory in the war on the holy festival of Christ’s Epiphany, so that this splendid commemoration might be indissolubly linked with the divine and immortal feast day:

9:217 Եւ զսոյն զայս ամենայն այցելութիւնս Աստուծոյ, որ ի վերայ աշխարհին Հայոց մեծապէս երեւեցաւ, գրեցին սուրբ եպիսկոպոսունքն եւ ետուն տանել յաշխարհն Յունաց ի մեծ քաղաքն առ սուրբ ուխտ եկեղեցւոյն. զի եւ նոքա աղաւթս առնելով խնդրեսցեն յԱստուծոյ, որպէս սկսաքս ի նմին եւ կատարեսցուք:

 9:217 And all these visitations of God, which had been splendidly made manifest on Armenia’s behalf, the holy bishops set in writing and had sent to the land of the Greeks, to the holy clergy in the capital, so that they in their prayers might beg God that “we might conclude our enterprise as we have begun it:

9:218 Եւ զոմն յառաջին կապելոցն Պարսկաց լուծեալ եւ ածեալ զառաջեաւ նախարարացն, խաւսէին ընդ նմա եւ ցուցանէին զամենայն վնասն որ եղեւ, կամ աշխարհացն աւերել, կամ զաւրացն արքունի հարկանել, եւ կամ որ այլ իրք առաջոյ լինելոց էին:

 9:218 Releasing one of the foremost Persian captives and bringing him before the nobles, they conversed with him and indicated all the damage that had been done: the destruction of their lands, the slaughter of the royal troops, and the other disasters which lay ahead:

9:219 Եւ իբրեւ զայս ամենայն բովանդակ ցուցին նմա, միաբան լինէր ամբաստանութիւն երկոցունց կողմանցն՝զառաքինեացն եւ զյետս կացելոցն. ո՜րպէս զուր եւ տարապարտուց նեղեաց զնոսա ի հայրենի աւրինացն յետս կալ, եւ զխաբէութիւն ապստամբին Վասակայ, որպէս Հայոց բանիւ խաբեաց զթագաւորն, յանձն առնուլ զմոգութիւն. իբրեւ չէր ուրուք ընդ նմա բանս եդեալ, նա յանձնէ սուտակասպաս լինէր:

 9:219 As they explained all this to him, the accusations of both sides, of the virtuous and of the shirkers, concurred: how for no reason and unjustly he (the king) had constrained them to abandon their ancestral religion; the treachery of the rebel Vasak: how he had deceived the king by speaking for the Armenians that they would accept magism; for although no one had made an agreement with him he had made false insinuations on his own:

9:220 Իբրեւ լիով զայս ամենայն իմացուցին, արձակեցին զնա հրեշտակութեամբ յաղերս ապաբանութեան եւ ի հնարս հայթայթանաց, թերեւս կարասցեն զեղբարս իւրեանց ի նեղութենէն գողանալ:

 9:220 When they had made all this completely clear, they sent him off as a messenger to present their case and to contrive some means that perchance they might be able to extricate their brothers from their tribulation:

9:221 Այլ առ նա՝ անաւրէնն Վասակայ գուժկանքն յառաջագոյն հասեալ էին, պատմել զաղէտս տարակուսանացն, զոր անցուցեալ էր ընդ զաւրսն արքունի. եւ ամենայն ամբաստանութիւնն ի սուրբ ուխտ եկեղեցւոյն կրթեալ էր:

 9:221 But meanwhile, the messengers of the impious Vasak had previously reached Persia with the sad news of the terrible disaster that he (Vardan) had brought upon the royal army, and claiming that the whole blame lay on the holy clergy:

9:222 Քանզի այն իսկ կամք էին անաւրինին, եթէ զմիաբանութիւն եպիսկոպոսացն քակտեսցէ ի նախարարացն. եւ զայս ոչ էր տեղեկացեալ տակաւին, եթէ հոգի եւ մարմին բաժանիցին առ ժամանակ մի՝ գոյ տեսանել ի բնութեանս, այլ որ սիրովն Աստուծոյ յուխտ մտեալ է՝ այսմ անհնար է լինել:

 9:222 For such was the desire of the impious one—to destroy the unity of the bishops with the nobles. But of this he was not yet aware—that the soul and body may be separated for a while, as can be seen in nature; but such separation is impossible for those who have entered a covenant in love of God:

9:223 Արդ երթեալ այրն ի տեղի ձմերոցին, պատմեաց զայս ամենայն յականջս թագաւորին, շարժեալ դողացոյց, որ եւ յամենայն զաւրութենէն պակասեալ գտաւ. մանաւանդ զի յարեւելից պատերազմէն կորակոր եւ ոչ բարձրագլուխ էր դարձեալ:

 9:223 So, the man went to the winter quarters of the king and repeated all this in his ears, making him shake and quiver. He lost all his strength, especially because he had returned from the war in the East humiliated and not with head held high:

9:224 Իբրեւ ստուգեալ հաստատեաց ի վերջին հրեշտակէն, որ եհաս առ նա, զամենայն վնասս զիւր գործոցն զխորհրդակցաւքն արկանէր:

 9:224 When he had received accurate confirmation from this last messenger who had come to him, he threw all the blame for his enterprises on his counselors:

9:225 Եւ անդէն շիջանէր ի բազմաբոց բորբոքմանէն. քանզի խցաւ բերան չար խրատտուացն, որ անդադար յորդորէին զնա ի գործ դառնութեան:

 9:225 Then he cooled from his raging anger because the mouths of his evil advisers, who had been urging him unceasingly to cruel acts, had been silenced:
