1:0 Վեցերորդ Յեղանակ - ՅՈՐՈՒՄ ԿԱՐԳԱԳԻՐ ԴԱՐՁԵԱԼ ԱՌԱՔԻՆՈՒԹԻՒՆՆ ՀԱՅՈՑ ԵՒ ՉԱՐԱԳՈՅՆ ԵՒՍ ԵՐԵՒԻ ԱՆԱՒՐԷՆՈՒԹԻՒՆՆ ՎԱՍԱԿԱՅ:

 1:0 CHAPTER SIX - In Which the Virtue of the Armenians Is Again Set Forth and the Impiety of Vasak Is Shown To Be Even More Wicked:

1:1 Արդ դարձեալ յայնժամ դրդեաց զՄուշկան Նիսալաւուրտ եւ զամենայն աւագանին Արեաց. առեալ զզաւրսն՝ հասանէր ի վերայ ամրոցին, յոր անկեալ էին գունդ մի ի զաւրացն Հայոց հանդերձ սուրբ քահանայիւքն, եւ մարտ եդեալ կռուէին շուրջ զբերդաւն:

 1:1 Then Vasak again incited Mushkan Nisalavurt and all the Aryan nobility. Taking troops, he reached the fortress in which a detachment of the Armenian army with the holy priests had taken refuge; they joined battle around the castle:

1:2 Եւ իբրեւ ոչինչ կարացին ազդել նոցա, դարձեալ յերդմունս ապաստան եղեալ, զի ուխտիւ իջուսցեն զնոսա առանց դաւ ինչ գործելոյ, եւ երկիցս եւ երիցս անգամ ետուն տանել զաւետարանն:

 1:2 Since they were unable to make any impression on them (the Armenians), they resorted to oaths, that they should come down under a pact without (the Persians) engaging in any deceit. Two and three times they had the Gospel brought:

1:3 Թէպէտ եւ քահանայքն յանձն առնուին զիջանելն կալ առաջի, բազումք ի զաւրականացն ոչ կարէին հաւատալ սուտ ուխտին Վասակայ. քանզի սկսաւ երթալ Մուշկան Նիսալաւուրտ զհետ չար խրատուն Վասակայ:

 1:3 But although the priests agreed to go down and present themselves, many of the soldiers were unable to trust Vasak’s false pact, since Mushkan Nisalavurt had begun to follow Vasak’s wicked advice:

1:4 Մի ոմն ի քաջ զաւրականէն Հայոց, որ անկեալ էր ի բերդն փախստեամբ, Բակ անուն, ելեալ ի պարիսպն թշնամանս դնէր անաւրինին, եւ ցուցանէր առաջի Պարսից զաւրագլխին զամենայն չարիսն, զոր անցուցեալ էր նորա ընդ աշխարհն Հայոց:

 1:4 One of the brave Armenian soldiers who had fled to the castle for refuge, Bak by name, went up onto the wall and reviled the impious one. In front of the Persian general he rehearsed all the evils that he had brought upon Armenia:

1:5 Զոր եւ բազումք լուեալ՝ արդարացուցանէին զամբաստանութիւնն, ոչ միայն ի Հայոց կողմանէն, այլ եւս առաւել զաւրքն Պարսից:

 1:5 On hearing this, many confirmed the truth of the charge—not only from the Armenian side, but even more of the Persian soldiers:

1:6 Սոյն այրս այս ի նմին գիշերի եւթն հարեւր արամբք ել գնաց ի բերդէ անտի, եւ ոչ կարացին ձեռն արկանել ի նա:

 1:6 That same night Bak left the fortress with seven hundred men, without them being able to lay hands on him:

1:7 Իսկ որ ի ներքս յամրին մնացին, թէպէտ եւ գիտէին ճշմարտիւ զխաբեբայ երդմունս նոցա, ոչ ունէին համբար ի ներքս. իբրեւ ոչ կամաւ իջեալ կացին առաջի, հրամայեաց սպանանել ի նոցանէ երկերիւր եւ երեքտասան այր:

 1:7 But those who remained within the fortress, although they well knew that the Persians’ oaths were false, had no provisions inside. When they had unwillingly gone down and presented themselves, he ordered two hundred and thirteen of them to be killed:

1:8 Աղաղակեցին ամենեքեան եւ ասեն. «Գոհանամք զքէն Տէր Աստուած մեր. մինչդեռ շէն են եկեղեցիք եւ անքակ տաճարք վկայից եւ միաբան սուրբ ուխտ եկեղեցւոյ եւ առաքինացեալ, արժանի արարեր զմեզ կոչմանդ երկնաւորի:

 1:8 They all cried out, saying: “We thank you, our Lord God, that while the churches are still flourishing and the temples of martyrs are still undestroyed, and the holy covenant of the church is still unbroken and undefiled, you have made us worthy of your heavenly calling:

1:9 Հաւասարեսցի մահս մեր ընդ մահ քաջ նահատակացն, եւ խառնեսցի արիւնս մեր ընդ արիւն անկեալ վիրաւորացն, եւ հաճեսցի Տէր ընդ եկեղեցիս իւր՝ բազմութեամբ կամաւոր զուարակացս, որ ելանեն ի վերայ սուրբ սեղանոյս:

 1:9 May our death equal the death of the brave heroes, and our blood be mingled with the blood of the fallen wounded. May the Lord look favorably on his churches and this host of willing victims who are mounting this holy altar:

1:10 Զայս ասելով ի տեղւոջն կատարեցան երկերիւրքն եւ երեքտասանքն:

 1:10 Having said this the two hundred and thirteen men were martyred on the spot:

1:11 Իսկ սուրբ քահանայքն՝ որ անդ դիպեցան յամուրսն, երանելիքս այս Յովսէփ եւ Ղեւոնդ՝ բազում ընկերակցաւքն իւրեանց, մատուցին եւ նոքա զպարանոցս իւրեանց առաջի սրոյ դահճապետին, ասելով զնոյն բանս՝ զոր խաւսեցան երկերիւրքն:

 1:11 Now the holy priests who were in the castle—the blessed Yovsep and Ḷevond with their numerous companions—also offered their necks to the sword of the executioner, uttering the same words as the two hundred had spoken:

1:12 Քանզի ոչ եթէ ակնկալութիւն ինչ էր երանելեացն ըստ մարմնաւոր կենացս, այլ իմաստութեամբ հնարս խնդրէին լինել փոխանակ ամենայն աշխարհին շինութեան:

 1:12 For the blessed ones had no expectation at all of bodily life, but were wisely seeking to be a means for the prosperity of the whole land:

1:13 Վասն որոյ եւ բողոք ի դուռն կարդային, եւ զամենայն ամբաստանութիւն արկանէին զանաւրէնն զՎասակաւ:

 1:13 Therefore, they addressed a complaint to the court and threw the whole blame on the impious Vasak:

1:14 Զայս իբրեւ լուաւ Մուշկան Նիսալաւուրտ, ոչ իշխեաց ի նոսա ձեռն արկանել մահուամբ. այլ զՅովսէփ եւ զՂեւոնդ գան հարեալ՝ հրամայեցին պահել զգուշութեամբ, քանզի բողոք ի դուռն կարդացին. իսկ զայլ քահանայսն արձակեցին յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս, հրաման տուեալ վասն շինութեան եւ խաղաղութեան աշխարհին:

 1:14 When Mushkan Nisalavurt heard of this, he was unable to impose the death penalty on them. But after inflicting the bastinado on Yovsep and Ḷevond, the Persians ordered them to be kept under strict guard because they had addressed a complaint to the court. The other priests they sent off to each one’s own place with orders for the recovery and peace of the country:

1:15 Այլ մարդիկն Հայոց, որ հասեալ էին ի վերայ յեղյեղուկ հրամանաց թագաւորին եւ ուրացեալ չարիմացին Վասակայ, ոչինչ հաւատային սուտ թողութեանն. այլ քաջալերէին զմիմեանս եւ ասէին. «Զի՞ պիտոյ է մեզ բնաւ կեանք անցաւոր աշխարհիս, եւ կամ ընդէ՞ր տեսանեմք զարեւ յետ մերոց սիրելեացն:

 1:15 But the Armenian populace, who were aware of the fickle orders of the king and of the malevolent apostate Vasak, had no faith in the false pardon; rather, they encouraged one another, saying: “What need have we of life in this transitory world, or why should we see the sun after the death of our friends:

1:16 Զի եթէ քաջ նահատակքն մեր անկան ի մեծ պատերազմին, եւ բազում վիրաւորք տապալեցան յարիւն յապաժոյժ ի մէջ դաշտին, եւ ամենեցուն մարմինքն եղեն գէշ թռչնոց եւ կերակուր գազանաց, եւ պատուական նախարարքն մեր հասին յանարգութիւն թշուառութեան, լքին զիւրաքանչիւր իշխանութիւն եւ են ի հալածանս նեղութեան, եւ ամենայն փափկութիւնն Հայոց եհաս ի վիշտս վտանգի եւ յանհնարին ապականութիւն, ոչ անսամք խաբեբայ հրամանացդ եւ անկանիմք ի ձեռս անաւրէն իշխանացդ:

 1:16 For even if our brave heroes fell in the great battle, and many wounded rolled in torrents of blood on the plain, and all their bodies became carrion for birds and food for animals, and our honorable nobles were brought down to miserable indignity, abandoned their dominions, and are suffering grievously, and all our delicate Armenian women have fallen prey to dangerous afflictions and terrible deprivations—we shall not obey your deceitful commands or submit to your impious princes:

1:17 Թողին այնուհետեւ իւրաքանչիւր զգեւղս եւ զաւանս եւ զագարակս:

 1:17 Then they each abandoned their villages, towns, and estates:

1:18 Ելին հարսունք յառագաստից եւ փեսայք ի սենեկաց, անկան ծերք յաթոռոց եւ տղայք ի գրկաց. երթային երիտասարդք եւ կուսանք եւ ամենայն բազմութիւն արանց եւ կանանց, հասեալ ունէին զամուրս անապատին եւ զանխաբ տեղիս բազում լերանց:

 1:18 Brides left their chambers and grooms their rooms; old men fell from their chairs and infants from their mothers’ bosoms. Young men and maidens and the whole populace of men and women went out and occupied the safe parts of the desert and the secure places of numerous mountains:

1:19 Լաւ համարէին զգազանաբար բնակութիւնն աստուածպաշտութեամբ ի քարանձաւս կելոյ, քան ուրացութեամբ փափկանալ յիւրաքանչիւր շինուածս:

 1:19 They considered it better to live like beasts in caves but in piety than to live luxuriously in their own houses but in apostasy:

1:20 Առանց տրտնջելոյ համբերէին խոտաբուտ կերակրոցն, եւ ոչ յիշէին զսովորական խորտիկսն:

 1:20 Without a murmur they endured their food of grass and did not think of their usual victuals:

1:21 Համարեալ էին նոցա դարափորքն իբրեւ զյարկս բարձրաբերձ շինուածոց, եւ գետնանկողինքն իբրեւ զնկարեալ պատշգամս:

 1:21 Caverns in their reckoning were like ceilings in very tall buildings, and beds on the ground like painted arcades:

1:22 Սաղմոսք էին նոցա մրմնջունք երգոց, եւ ընթերցուածք սուրբ գրոց կատարեալ ուրախութիւնք:

 1:22 Their whispered songs were psalms, and the reading of the Holy Scriptures their ultimate delight:

1:23 Ամենայն մարդ յանձն իւր եկեղեցի էր, նոյն ինքն քահանայ. մարմինք իւրաքանչիւր՝ սուրբ սեղան, եւ ոգիք նոցունց՝ պատարագ ընդունելի:

 1:23 Every man was a church for himself, was himself a priest. Each one’s body was a holy altar, and their souls an acceptable sacrifice:

1:24 Քանզի ոչ ոք ի նոցանէ ողբայր յուսահատութեամբ զանկեալսն ի սրոյ, եւ ոչ ոք հեծեծելով հառաչէր ի վերայ մերձաւոր սիրելեաց իւրոց:

 1:24 For none of them despairingly mourned those who had fallen by the sword; no one bewailed and sighed over his close friends:

1:25 Խնդութեամբ ընկալան զյափշտակութիւն ընչից բազմաց, եւ ոչ յիշէին ամենեւին՝ եթէ եղեալ իցեն նոցա ստացուածք:

 1:25 Joyfully they endured the rapine of many possessions and did not even recall at all that they had owned prosperity:
