45:0 Իսկ զայլս ի կապելոց, որք էին ի տանուտերացն եւ յաւագ սեպհացն, որք էին ի նմին ատենի` հրամայէր Միհրներսեհ դահճացն` տանել զնոսա եւ խիստ կապանաւք պահել, մինչեւ ինքնին թագաւորն, ասէ, առաջի իւր հարցցէ եւ լուիցէ զոր ինչ խաւսին:

 45:0 As regards the others in fetters—the tanuters and senior sepuhs—Mihrnerseh ordered the executioners to take them and to keep them in stringent bondage, until the king himself should say that they should be brought before him for questioning, so that he could hear what they had to say:

45:1 Եւ մտեալ ի վաղիւն անաւրէնն Միհրներսեհ առաջի թագաւորին Յազկերտի` տալ նմա գիտել զամենայն հարցուածսն իւր եւ զպատասխանիս քահանայիցն Հայոց:

 45:1 The next day the impious Mihrnerseh went into the presence of king Yazkert and informed him about all of his questions as well as the responses of the Armenian priests:

45:2 Եւ սրտմտեալ թագաւորն` հրամայեաց ի վաղիւն ատեան մեծ լինել առաջի իւր, եւ ամենայն այր, Արի եւ անարի, եւ զոր ինչ եւ ունէր ոք զպատիւ թագաւորին` կազմ առաջի իւր եկեսցեն, եւ զկապեալսն զամենեսեան ածել առաջեաւ:

 45:2 The king, angered, commanded that on the following day a great atean should be held in his presence, and that everyone, Aryan and non-Aryan and whoever held the king’s honor [ew zor inch’ ew uner ok’ zpatiw t’agaworin] should come prepared, while all the captives should be led into his presence:

45:3 Բայց զտղայսն եւ զմանկունսն ի տոհմէն Մամիկոնէից եւ Կամսարականացն եւ որք յայլ տոհմէն` հրամայէր անաւրինին Միհրներսեհի տալ ի բաց` ում եւ կամեսցի:

 45:3 But he ordered the impious Mihrnerseh to take the boys and lads of the Mamikonean tohm, the Kamsarakans, and other tohms, and to give them to whomever he pleased:

45:4 Եւ լուեալ զայս ամենայն զինուորքն` որ ոք ունէր զպատիւ թագաւորին` վաղ անդր հասանէին յատեանն:

 45:4 When all the soldiers who held the king’s honor heard this, they hastened to the atean the next day:

45:5 Իսկ ուխտանենգ իշխանն Սիւնեաց Վասակ, արկեալ զիւրեաւ զամենայն պատիւս, զոր ունէր ի թագաւորէն` գայր մտանէր ի խորանսն արքունի մեծաւ շքեղութեամբ. քանզի բաց ի պատուոյ թագաւորացն որ նուազէր նմա` այլ ոչ ինչ ի պատուոյ արքունի պիտոյ էր` զոր ոչ ունէր. եւ կարծէր այնուհետեւ առնուլ զթագաւորութիւնն մեծ աշխարհին Հայոց:

 45:5 As for the oath-breaking prince of Siwnik’, Vasak, he decked himself out with all the honors he had received from the king and came and entered the palace of the court with great pomp. For, short of the dignity of kings, which had eluded him, there was no single beneficial court honor that he did not possess. Furthermore, (Vasak) thought that he would be receiving the kingship of the great land of Armenia:

45:6 Եւ զայն ոչ գիտէր թշուառացեալն, եթէ Տէր հեռացեալ էր ի նմանէ, եւ այսն պիղծ խեղդէր զնա. եւ բան սրբոյ առն Աստուծոյ Ղեւոնդի ի նմին ժամու կատարէր ի վերայ թշուառականին:

 45:6 But the wretch did not know that God had quit his side, and this impure creature the [dew] was choking him. In that hour, the word of Ghewond, the blessed man of God, was fulfilled upon the wretch:

45:7 Եւ լցեալ Արեաւք եւ անարեաւք ամենայն խորանն` հրաման տայր թագաւորն զապստամբսն Հայոց կապանաւք ածել առաջեաւ:

 45:7 When the entire palace was filled with Aryans and non-Aryans, the king ordered the rebel Armenians to be brought forth in shackles:

45:8 Եւ ածեալ կացուցանէին զնոսա առաջի թագաւորին:

 45:8 The captives were brought into the king’s presence:

45:9 Եւ հարցեալ թագաւորին` ասէ ցնոսա. «Ո՞րպիսի համարձակութեամբ եւ կամ զի՞նչ զմտաւ ածեալ եւ կամ ո՞ր պատրանաւք եւ կամ զի՞նչ ոյժ աւգնականութեան տեսեալ` դիմեցէք յայնպիսի ահաւոր գործ, յորում տեսանէիք զկորուստ անձանց ձերոց եւ զաշխարհին, որպէս եղեւ իսկ եւ տեսէք:

 45:9 The king asked them: “With what audacity, thinking or imagining what, or forseeing what assistance, did you attempt such an awesome deed? Now you see that it has led to the destruction of yourselves and your land:

45:10 Եւ լուեալ զայս ամենայն նախարարացն Հայոց` լուռ եղեն առ վայր մի եւ ոչ ինչ ետուն պատասխանի:

 45:10 When all of the Armenian naxarars heard this, they were silent for a moment and gave no answer:

45:11 Եւ երկրորդեալ զբանսն թագաւորին ըստ առաջին հարցմանն` խնդրէր ի նոցանէ ստիպով պատասխանի:

 45:11 The king repeated his previous question and demanded a prompt response from them:

45:12 Եւ նոցա տուեալ պատասխանի` ասեն. «Շնորհեսցէ մեզ բարերարութիւնդ ձեր զայր մի, զոր մեք ի մէնջ ցուցանեմք, լսել ի նմանէ զամենայն ի բնէ զմերոց իրաց զաճումն, զխորհելն եւ զառնելն. վասն զի ոչ է պարտ ամենեցուն մեզ անկարգ ամբոխիւ խաւսել առաջի քո:

 45:12 They replied: “May your benevolence grant that one of our number whom we shall select (may speak) so that you may hear everything naturally regarding the beginings, plans and actions of what we undertook. For we should not all speak before you as a disorganized mob:

45:13 Եւ թագաւորին եւ ամենայն աւագանւոյն յաւժարութեամբ յանձն առեալ` հրամայեաց:

 45:13 The king and all the nobility gladly accepted this, and (the king) so ordered:

45:14 Եւ նոցա յառաջ մատուցեալ զԿամսարականն Արշաւիր` ասացին լսել ի նմանէ բովանդակապէս զամենայն. եւ Կամսարականն Արշաւիր, զաւրացեալ ի սուրբ Հոգւոյն, յառաջ մատուցեալ, աներկիւղաբար սկսաւ խաւսել առաջի թագաւորին եւ ամենայն աւագանւոյն եւ ասէ:

 45:14 The captives brought forth Arshawir Kamsarakan, and said that everything could be fully learned by listening to him. Arshawir Kamsarakan, strengthened by the holy Spirit, came forward and began to speak before the king and all the nobility, fearlessly:

45:15 Ի սկզբան իսկ զիրացդ զայդոցիկ զպատճառս. յորժամ ի ձեր թագաւորացդ ի միտս ծնեալ`յայտնեցաւ մեզ բանն, եւ զիրացդ բուռն հարէք, որում մեզ ծառայել հրամայէիք, եւ աւրէնս իմն հարկաւորէիք ունել մեզ, զոր ոչ մեք եւ ոչ նախնիք նախնեաց մերոց գիտէին եւ կամ ծառայեալ էր. եւ բազում անգամ բողոքեցաք, թէ անհնար է մեզ յանձն առնուլ եւ ծառայել աւրինաց, որոց նախնիքն մեր ոչ ծառայեցին, որ եւ մտաց մերոց ծանր թուի եւ արհամարհանք. եւ այսպիսի ի մէնջ բողոքելոյ` ձերոյին իսկ վկայէ անսուտ հրապարակդ:

 45:15 The initial cause of the problem arose when the thought which had formed in the head of your kings, was revealed to us, and furthered with force, that you had ordered us to hold a faith which neither we, nor our ancestors’ ancestors knew nor served. We often protested that it was impossible for us to consent to serve a faith which our ancestors had not served and which seems heavy and contemptible to us. Your very truthful assembly can testify that there was such a protest from us:

45:16 Եւ իբրեւ ոչ կամեցաք լսել, ըստ բռնաւոր կամացդ ձերոց` եւ հարկաւորութեամբ յանձն ետուք առնուլ զպաշտաւնն. զոր շրթամբք առ երկիւղի մեծարեցաք սուտ, կամեցեալ գողանալ վայր մի խաբէութեամբ զերկիւղ ձեր, եւ սրտիւք գարշելի համարեցաք զգործն եւ ատէաք, եդեալ ի մտի զերծանել հնարիւք եւ երթալ յաշխարհն մեր եւ թողուլ զաշխարհն մեր եւ գնալ կնաւ եւ որդւովք, եւ երթալ կորնչել յաւտար երկիր:

 45:16 Though you did not want to listen, through your forceful will, and through force you undertook to (make us) accept the faith. With our lips atremble we exalted that false (religion), wanting to cover with deception for a moment (our) fear of you. In our hearts we regarded the deed as loathsome, and we hated (doing it), but we decided to get ourselves free through strategems, to go to our land and to quit it with our wives and children, departing to be lost in a foreign country:

45:17 Զոր նախ քան զամենեսեան ըստ ամենեցուն խորհրդոցն երեւելին ըստ աշխարհին իշխանաց, ծառայն ձեր Վարդան արար, զոր գիտեն եւ վկայեն բանից իմոց արք պարսիկք յաւագ տոհմաց, որ այժմ ողջ են եւ աստ են առ ձեզ:

 45:17 The first to do this was your servant Vardan, who in everyone’s opinion was prominent in the land of the princes. Many Iranians from the senior tohms who today are well and here with you know this and can testify to my words:

45:18 Առեալ լոկ զիւր կին եւ զընտանիս իւր` դէմ եդեալ գնաց փախստեայ ի ձերոյ երկիւղէ յերկիրն Յունաց:

 45:18 Taking only his wife and family, (Vardan) turned to go as a fugitive to the country of Byzantium, out of fear of you:

45:19 Եւ զգացեալ զայս տեառնդ Սիւնեաց Վասակայ` փութով զհետ դեսպանս արար զաւագ տանուտեարսն եւ սեպուհսն եւ զսուրբ քահանայսն, եւ զսուրբ գիրս աւրինաց մերոց կնքեալ իւրովք մատանւով, որով եւ երդուան իսկ` ետ տանել առ նա. ընդ որս յղեաց եւ զիս:

 45:19 When the lord of Siwnik’, Vasak, realized what had happened, he quickly sent as emissaries the senior tanuters and sepuhs and the blessed priests, to take (to Vardan) the blessed Book of our faith, sealed with his own ring, the very Book on which he had indeed sworn. Among (the emissaries), (Vasak) also sent me:

45:20 Եւ գրեաց ի նամակին առ նա այս պէս, թէ «Զի՞ ես փախուցեալ, եւ կամ զի՞նչ է երկիւղդ քո, յորմէ դուդ երկնչիս, եւ ինչ ոչ յայտնեցեր. արդ մի՛ փախչիր եւ մի՛ երկնչիր յումեքէ. զի թէ յԱրեաց տեառնէն եւ ի նորին ուժոյ զարհուրեալ ես` մի՛ երկնչիր. դարձի՛ր, եւ նամակ առնեմք առ կայսր, եւ զանձինս մեր նմա ի ծառայութիւն տամք. եւ նա հաւատայ, թէ զայսպիսի մեծ աշխարհ նմա մե՛ր կամաւ ի ծառայութիւն տամք` խնդութեամբ եւ կամաւ յանձն առնու, եւ զաւր տայ մեզ. եւ նոքա եւ մեք միաբանեալք` միշտ աշխատ ունիմք զտէրն Արեաց եւ զԱրիս:

 45:20 Vasak wrote the following in a letter (to Vardan): “Why are you fleeing, what and whom do you fear? You did not say. Do not flee and fear no one. Though you are terrified of the lord of the Aryans and his strength, do not fear. Return, and we shall write a letter to the emperor, and give ourselves to him in service. He will agree that such a great land would go into his service by our own will, and he will delightedly agree to give us a force. (The Byzantines) and we, united, will tire out the lord of the Aryans and the Aryan people:

45:21 Ապա թէ կայսր այլազգագոյնս ինչ խորհի եւ չճանաչէ զիւր աւգուտսն՝ եւ ես մինչ Վրաց մարզպանն էի եւ դուռն Աղուանից յիմում ձեռին էր` բազում զաւրագլուխք Հոնաց ընդ իս բարեկամացան ուխտիւ եւ երդմամբ, եւ այսաւր նովին երդմամբ երթեւեկեն առ իս. եւ հարկքս ամենայն աշխարհիս Հայոց առ իս են, եւ գործակալք ամենայն յիմում ձեռին են, եւ այլ եւս բազում կարասի, զոր ի պարսիկ գործակալացն հանի` որ աստ ի Հայս էին, ի յիմում գանձի կայ. յորմէ թէ զմի մասն Հոնաց տամ տանել` անտի ա՛յնչափ սաստիկ հանեմ Հոնս, որչափ զի հողն Պարսից չբաւիցէ նոցա յաւարի:

 45:21 Should the emperor think otherwise and not recognize his advantage in this, then (be aware of the fact that) when I was the marzpan of Iberia (Georgia), and the Gate of the Aghbanians (Aghuans) was under my control, many of the Huns’ military commanders became my friends through covenant and oath, and they (will) come to me today by the same oath. The taxes of the entire land of Armenia are with me, all the officials are in my hands, as well as much equippage taken from the Iranian officials here in Armenia which is in my treasury. Should I send part of this to the Huns, I will so greatly arouse them that the land of Iran will be insufficient for their looting:

45:22 Եւ գրեալ զայս ամենայն երդմամբ զՎարդան, որ էր մաւտեալ յաւտար իշխանաց իշխանութիւն, որք ոչ են հնազանդեալ ձերում իշխանութեանդ:

 45:22 Having written all of this with an oath, Vasak, the lord of Siwnik’, caused Vardan to turn back, involuntarily. (Vardan, at the time the emissaries reached him) was near the territory of foreign princes, who are not subject to your authority:

45:23 Եւ նամակն զոր գրեաց առ Վարդան Սիւնեաց տէրդ` ողջ է, եւ կնիք աստ առ մեզ:

 45:23 The letter which the lord of Siwnik’ wrote to Vardan is intact, bears the seal, and is here with us:

45:24 Տեսանել հրամայեցէք:

 45:24 Order to see it:

45:25 Եւ յաղագս որդւոցն իւրոց այսպէս ասէր, թէ «Որ ի Հայս Պարսիկ է` զամենեսեան կապանաւք յամուր բերդս դնեմ, մինչեւ հարկաւ արքայն զիմ որդիսն ի բաց արձակիցէ:

 45:25 Regarding his sons, (Vasak) had note: ’I will take all the Iranians in Armenia, place them in shackles and put them in secure fortresses until the king is forced to release my sons. ’:

45:26 Յորս կալաւ արս սակաւս ի Պարսկաց, առ վայր մի կապեաց. եւ յորժամ ինքն նենգաւորութեամբ զմերոյ կորստեան խորհուրդ ի միտ արկեալ տարաւ ի գլուխ` ապա զնոսա ի բաց արձակեաց:

 45:26 He did indeed seize a few Iranians and temporarily bound them. And when he treacherously decided to carry out the plan of our destruction which he had been thinking about, then he released them:

45:27 Նամականի արարեալ առ կայսր եւ առ այլ աւագանի դրանն եւ առ սպարապետն Անտիոքայ. եւ զՎահան Ամատունի եւ զայլս ի նախարարացն յիւրաքանչիւր տոհմէ ի Հոռոմս արձակեաց. եւ զՎարդան եւ զմեզ գնդաւ յԱղուանս ի կռիւ գումարեաց. եւ ինքն յանզգայս մեզ նենգեալ՝ յայս չար մղեաց. եւ զայնպիսի պիտանի զձեր ծառայ սպան, եւ այնչափ բազմութեան Պարսից եւ Հայոց կոտորածի եւ աշխարհին կորստեան եղեւ պատճառ:

 45:27 Vasak also wrote to the emperor, other court nobility, and to the sparapet of Antioch. Then he sent Vahan Amatuni and other naxarars from each tohm to Byzantium. After this, he sent Vardan and us with a brigade to fight in Aghbania (Aghuania). Having stupidly betrayed us, he precipitated this evil. He killed such a useful servant of yours (as Vardan), and was the cause of the deaths of such a multitude of Iranians and Armenians, and the destruction of the land:

45:28 Եւ արդ` ինքն զարդարեալ աւադիկ որպէս բարեգործ նստի ի միջի ձերում անհոգութեամբ:

 45:28 And now, behold him there, seated in your midst without a care, decorated like a doer of good deeds:

45:29 Բայց դուք զնամականին զամենայն, զոր գրեալ եւ կնքեալ է առ կայսր եւ առ ամենայն աշխարհն Հոռոմոց եւ կամ առ այլս բազումս` տեսանել հրամայեցէք զայն եւ որպէս ձեզ Արեաց կամ է` հրաման տուեալ կատարեցէք ի վերայ մեր:

 45:29 Why do you not order him to show all the letters, which he wrote and sealed to the emperor, to the entire land of the Byzantines, and to many others. Whatever the will of you Aryans is, order it carried out upon us:

45:30 Զի ուր գրեալք եւ կնքեալք ի միջի են, որպէս ձեր արդարութիւնդ խնդրէ, աւելորդ բանից եւ շատախաւսութեան պէտք անդ ոչ են:

 45:30 As your justice demands, since the written and sealed (letters) are here, there is no need for superfluous words and loquaciousness:

45:31 Եւ լուեալ զայս ամենայն կարգաւ ի Կամսարականէն Արշաւրայ արքային Պարսից եւ ամենայն աւագանւոյն դրանն, տեսեալ եւ զնամականին, զոր գրեալն էր Վասակայ Սիւնեաց տեառն, եւ ի վերայ հասեալ` մեծապէս հիացեալ թագաւորն Յազկերտ եւ ամենայն իշխանք դրանն զարմացան:

 45:31 When the king of Iran and the nobility of the court heard all of this in order from Arshawir Kamsarakan, and saw the letter written by Vasak, the lord of Siwnik’, king Yazkert and all the princes of the court were greatly astonished:
