8:0 Ապստամբութիւն Վահանայ ի Պերոզէ: Մահ Պերոզի եւ թագաւորել Կաւատայ։ Վահան կարգի մարզպան Հայոց: Մահ Կաւատայ եւ թագաւորել Անուշըռուան Խոսրովայ: Պատերազմ ընդ նմա Խոսրովայ եւ պարտութիւն:	8:0 Vahan’s rebellion against Peroz. Death of Peroz and reign of Kawat. Vahan is appointed marzpan of Armenia. Death of Kawat and reign of Anushěṙvan Khosrov. Rebellion of Vardan. Khosrov’s battle with him and defeat:
8:1 Եւ եղեւ յամս Պերոզի արքայի Պարսից բարձումն ամենայն իշխանութեանցն եւ կարգաց եւ աւրինաց քրիստոնէութեան, եւ այնպիսի վտանգ նեղութեան հալածանաց եւ քամահանաց ի վերայ հասեալ իշխանաց, մինչ զի ի բաց ընկեցին յինքեանց զլուծն ծառայութեան: Եւ ապստամբեալ Մամիկոնեանն Վահան՝ հալածեաց զՊարսիկս եւ բռնաբարայն գրաւեաց զիշխանութիւնն:	8:1 In the years of Peroz king of Persia there took place a suppression of all the privileges and rituals and usages of Christianity. Such severe tribulation of persecution and contempt assailed the princes, that they cast off from themselves the yoke of servitude. The Mamikonean Vahan rebelled, expelled the Persians, and seized power by force:
8:2 Յայնժամ արձակէ ի վերայ նորա Պերոզ արքայ՝ Հոնաց զաւր յոյժ: Եւ հրաման տայ խիստ սաստիւ՝ սպանանել զապստամբն, եւ հարկանել զամենայն արու սրով սուսերի: Ընդդէմ սորա աճապարեալ Վահան սպարապետ [Լ] հազարաւ ընտիր վառելոց, կարգին գունդ առ գունդ եւ ճակատ առ ճակատ, եւ յարձակին ի միմեանս ի ձայն փողոյ տագնապաւ ի դաշտին Գերանայ:	8:2 Then king Peroz sent against him a large army of Huns. He gave them strict orders to kill the rebel, and to put all males to the sword. The sparapet Vahan made haste to oppose him with [30,000] elite armed men. They were drawn up contingent facing contingent and line facing line. And they promptly attacked each other at the sound of the trumpet on the plain of Geran:
8:3 Անդ յաւգնութիւն հասեալ աստուածեան Բանն, հողմն սաստկացուցեալ զմրրիկ փոշւոյն՝ զզաւրաւքն. Պարսից հեղոյր, իբրեւ զմութ խաւարի զնոսա պատէր ի միջաւրեայ ժամանակի: Սաստիկ կոտորած լինէր երկոցունց կողմանցն, եւ ոչ գոյր ընտրել զդի անկելոցն, ոչ զպարսիկ եւ ոչ զհայ զաւրական: Բայց սակայն զաւրացեալ զաւրն Հայոց վանեցին անդ կոտորածով զզաւրն Պարսից, եւ զմնացեալսն փախստական արարեալ հալածական տանէին. եւ դարձան յաղթութեամբ մեծաւ:	8:3 Then the divine Word came to their assistance. The wind created an intense storm of dust around the armies and poured it onto the Persians, surrounding them as with thick darkness at noontime. A dreadful slaughter occurred on both sides, and one could not distinguish the corpses of the fallen - neither Persian nor Armenian soldier. However, the Armenian army gained strength and defeated the Persian army with a massacre. After pursuing the fleeing survivors, they returned totally victorious:
8:4 Այս Վահան ժողովեաց եւ զհարկս աշխարհիս Հայոց եւ շինեաց զեկեղեցիս մեծամեծս, զոր աւերեալ էր Պարսից ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի եւ ի Դըւնի եւ ի Մզրայս եւ ի բազում տեղիս աշխարհիս Հայոց: Եւ շինեալ զերկիրս նորոգեաց վերստին:	8:4 This Vahan also collected the tribute of Armenia and restored the great churches which the Persians had ruined in the city of Vałarshapat and in Dvin and in Mzrayk’, and in many places in Armenia. And he renewed again the prosperity of the land:
8:5 Իսկ Պերոզի արքային Պարսից, թէպէտ եւ կամեցաւ վերստին զաւրս գումարել ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց, ոչ եղեւ նմա պարապ. զի համբաւք թշնամեացն ստիպէին զնա ի կողմանցն Քուշանաց եւ յայնմ մարզէ. զի ինքն իսկ արքայն Քուշանաց խաղացեալ գայր ի վերայ նորա զաւրու մեծաւ:	8:5 Now although Peroz the Persian king wished to gather another army to attack Armenia, yet he did not have an opportunity; for news of the enemy gave him no respite in the area of the K’ushans and that frontier, since the king of the K’ushans himself was marching against him with a large army:
8:6 Եւ նորա գումարեալ զաւրս իւր՝ գնաց ընդդէմ նորա տագնապաւ մեծաւ: Ասէ. «Երթայց նախ առաջին զնա վանեցից, եւ ապա պարապաւ դարձեալ գնացից ի Հայս, եւ մի խնայեսցէ սուր իմ ի նոսա, յարս եւ ի կանայս:	8:6 Then, gathering his troops, he went to oppose him in great haste. He note: ’I shall first go and defeat him; and then at my leisure I shall return to Armenia. Let my sword not spare them, men or women. ’:
8:7 Եւ ինքն անցեալ փութանակի եհաս ընդդէմ թշնամւոյն յարեւելս. եւ եղեւ պատերազմն սաստիկ. հարին եւ կործանեցին զբազմութիւն զաւրացն Պարսից, մինչեւ ոչ մնաց ի նոցանէն ապրեալ եւ փախստական: Եւ մեռաւ Պերոզ արքայ ի պատերազմին հանդերձ եւթանեքումբք որդւովքն:	8:7 Marching rapidly, he arrived to confront the enemy in the east. There was a terrible battle. They defeated and destroyed the host of the Persian army, so not a single one of them escaped or fled. King Peroz also died in the battle with his seven sons:
8:8 Եւ ապա յայնժամ թագաւորեաց Կաւատ որդի նորա ի վերայ աշխարհին Պարսից: Եւ զի բեկեալ էր զաւրութիւն բազմութեանն զաւրաց իւրոց, ոչ ընդ ումեք կամեցաւ ունել գործ պատերազմի, այլ արար խաղաղութիւն յամենայն կողմանց. առնէ եւ ընդ Հայոց հաշտութիւն, եւ կոչէ զՎահան ի դուռն, եւ մեծարէ զնա մեծապէս պատուով: Եւ տայ նմա զմարզպանութիւն աշխարհին եւ զՄամիկոնեաց տէրութիւնն, եւ երդում առ բազում ի ծառայութիւն, եւ արձակէ բարեաւ յերկիր իւր:	8:8 Then his son Kawat reigned over the land of Persia. Because the power of his numerous army had been broken, he did not wish to engage in war with anyone, but made peace on all sides. He also made a treaty with the Armenians, summoned Vahan to court, and greatly honoured him. He bestowed on him the office of marzpan of the country and the principality of the Mamikoneans. He received an oath of full submission, and despatched him peaceably to his own country:
8:9 Յետ Վահանայ կալաւ զիշխանութիւնն Վարդ Պատրիկ եղբայրն նորա սակաւ ինչ ժամանակ, եւ մեռաւ: Զկնի նորա եկին մարզպան պարսիկք. ապա ոչ կարացին պատերազմիլ Հայք, ի հնազանդութեան կացին մինչեւ ցՍուրէնն մարզպան եւ ցՎարդանն Մամիկոնէից տէրն:	8:9 After Vahan his brother the patrik Yard held the office for a short time, then died. After him Persian marzpans came. But the Armenians were unable to wage war and remained in submission down to the marzpan Surēn and Vardan lord of the Mamikoneans:
8:10 Եւ եղեւ ի [ԽԱ] ամի թագաւորութեան Խոսրովայ որդւոյ Կաւատայ՝ ապստամբեաց Վարդան եւ ի բաց եկաց ի ծառայութենէ թագաւորութեանն Պարսից հանդերձ միաբանութեամբ ամենայն Հայաստանեաւք: Սպանեալ զՍուրէնն մարզպան յանկարծաւրէն ի Դուին քաղաքի՝ առին զաւար բազում եւ գնացին ի ծառայութիւն Յունաց:	8:10 Then in the [41st] year of the reign of Khosrov, son of Kawat, Vardan rebelled and rejected submission to Persian rule in unison with all the Armenians. They killed the marzpan Surēn, taking him by surprise in the city of Dvin, seized much booty, and turned their allegiance to the Greeks:
8:11 Յայնժամ յառաջ քան զայս ապստամբեալ ի բաց եկաց ի Հայոց անուանեալ Վահան իշխան աշխարհին Սիւնեաց, եւ խնդրեաց ի Խոսրովայ յարքայէն Պարսից, զի տարցեն զդիւան աշխարհին Սիւնեաց ի Դըւնայ ի Փայտակարան քաղաք, եւ կարգեսցէ զքաղաքն ի շահրմար Ատրպատականի, զի մի եւս կոչեսցի անուն Հայոց ի վերայ նոցա: Եւ կատարէր հրամանն:	8:11 At that time, before this event, a certain prince Vahan, prince of the land of Siwnik’, had rebelled and seceded from the Armenians. He requested Khosrov, king of Persia, that they might move the divan of the land of Siwnik’ from Dvin to the city of P’aytakaran, and that he might set that city in the census of Atrpatakan, so that the name of Armenians would no longer be applied to them. And the order was carried out:
8:12 Իսկ առ Հայոց երդնոյր թագաւորն Յունաց, եւ հաստատէր զնոյն ուխտ՝ որ ի մէջ թագաւորացն էր երկոցունց, երանելւոյն Տրդատայ եւ Կոստանդիանոսի. եւ տայր նոցա զզաւրսն կայսերական յաւգնութիւն: Եւ նոցա առեալ զզաւրն՝ դիմեցին ի վերայ քաղաքին Դըւնայ եւ պաշարեալ կործանեցին ի վերուստ մինչեւ ի վայր, եւ հալածեցին զզաւրն Պարսից որ ի նմա կային:	8:12 Then the Greek king made an oath with the Armenians and confirmed the same pact which had been made between the two kings - the blessed Trdat and Constantine. He gave them an imperial army in support. When they had received the army, they attacked the city of Dvin; after a siege they destroyed it from top to bottom, and expelled the Persian troops who were stationed in it:
8:13 Բայց եհաս ի վերայ նոցա յանկարծաւրէն խռովութիւն մեծ, զի զեկեղեցի սրբոյն Գրիգորի, որ շինեալ էր մերձ ի քաղաքն, էին արարեալ համբարանոցս Պարսիկքն, հարին հուր եւ այրեցին. վասն որոյ եղեւ նոցա խռովութիւն մեծ:	8:13 But suddenly a great tumult fell on them. For the Persians had turned the church of St Gregory, which they had built near the city, into a store-house. They (the Greeks) had set it on fire and burned it. Therefore, a great tumult befell them:
8:14 Գայ ապա ի վերայ նորա Միհրանն Միհրեւանդակ [Ի] հազարաւ զաւրու եւ փղաւք բազմաւք: Եւ եղեւ պատերազմ մեծ ի դաշտին Խաղամխեայ. եւ հարեալ զզաւրն Պարսից անհնարին հարուածովք մաշէին ի սուր սուսերաց, զփիղսն զամենայն թափէին: Եւ Միհրանն սակաւուք պրծեալ գնացին յերկիրն իւրեանց:	8:14 Then Mihran Mihrewandak attacked them with [20,000] troops and many elephants. There was a great battle on the plain of Khałamakhikc. They defeated the Persian army with tremendous losses, put them to the sword, and took from them all the elephants. Mihran escaped with a few men, and they returned to their own country:
8:15 Այս այն Վարդան է, յորոյ վերայ եկն ինքն արքայն Պարսից, կոչեցեալ Անուշըռուան Խոսրով, հանդերձ բազմութեամբ սպառազէն զաւրացն եւ փղաւք բազմաւք, եւ ճանապարհ կալեալ ընդ գաւառն Արտազու՝ գնաց ընդ Բագրեւանդ, զանց արարեալ զԿարնոյ քաղաքաւ: Եւ կալեալ ճանապարհ գնաց ի Մեղիտինէ եւ բանակեցաւ դէմ յանդիման նորա:	8:15 This is the Vardan against whom the Persian king, called Anush Ĕṙuan Khosrov, came in person with a host of fully armed troops and many elephants. He marched through the province of Artaz, crossed Bagrewand, and passed by the city of Karin. Continuing on his way, he came to Melitene and camped opposite it:
8:16 Եւ ի վաղուեան առաւաւտուն հապճեպ ստիպով կարգեն գունդ առ գունդ եւ ճակատ առ ճակատ, եւ բաղխէին զմիմեանս պատերազմաւ: Եւ սաստկացաւ պատերազմն ի վերայ երեսաց երկրի, եւ խմբեցաւ պատերազմն յոյժ. եւ մատնեաց Տէր ի պարտութիւն զթագաւորն Պարսից եւ զաւրս նորա զամենայն:	8:16 On the morning of the next day with great promptness they drew up contingent facing contingent and line to line, and engaged each other in battle. The battle grew intense over the face of the land, and the conflict became very dense. The Lord delivered the Persian king and all his army to defeat:
8:17 Եւ խորտակեցան առաջի թշնամեացն սրով սուսերի, եւ փախեան յերեսաց նոցա սաստիւ տագնապաւ. ոչ գիտելով զճանապարհս փախստեան իւրեանց՝ երթեալ ամացան ի գետն մեծ, որ կոչի Եւփրատէս: Եւ ուռուցեալ ի վեր ջուրն՝ խաղացոյց զբազմութիւն փախստականացն իբրեւ զբազմութիւն մարախոյ, եւ ոչ կարացին յաւուր յայնմիկ ճողոպրել բազումք:	8:17 They were routed before their enemies by the sword, and fled before them with great precipitation. Not knowing the roads to take for flight, they went and cast themselves into the great river called Euphrates. The swollen water carried away the multitude of fugitives like a host of locusts; not many were able to save themselves that day:
8:18 Բայց թագաւորն մազապուր պրծեալ սակաւուք՝ ի փիղս եւ ի ձին ապաստան եղեալ, փախստական ընդ Աղձնիսն անդրէն ի կայեանս իւր երթայր:	8:18 But the king with a few men escaped by the skin of his teeth, taking refuge in the elephants and cavalry. He fled through Ałdznik and returned to his own residence:
8:19 Եւ նոքա առին զբանակն ամենայն հանդերձ արքունական գանձիւքն: Եւ կալան զբամբիշն եւ զբանուկան եւ թափեցին զմաշկապերճանն ամենայն, դեսպակն ոսկեղէն բազմաքանքար, որ էր ակամբք պատուականաւք եւ մարգարտաւ յաւրինեալ, որ անուանեալ կոչէր ի նոցունց դեսպակ փառաց:	8:19 They seized all their camp with the royal treasures. They captured the queen and the women, and appropriated the entire (royal) pavilion, and the golden carriage of great value, which was set with precious stones and pearls and was called by them the ’glorious’ carriage:
8:20 Առաւ եւ Հրատն, զոր ընդ ինքեան շրջեցուցանէր թագաւորն հանապազորդ յաւգնականութիւն իւր, որ մեծագոյն համարեալ էր քան զամենայն կրակ, որ կոչէր ի նոցունց Աթաշ. հեղձաւ ի գետն հանդերձ մովպետան մովպետաւ եւ այլ բազմութեամբ մեծամեծ աւագաց: Յամենայն ժամ աւրհնեալ է Աստուած:	8:20 Also seized was the Fire which the king continually took around with him for assistance, which was reckoned more important than all other fires; it was called by them At’ash. This was extinguished in the river with the movpet-movpetan and a further host of the most eminent persons. At all times God is blessed:
