24:0 Յաղագս Մերուժանայ, թէ զիա՛րդ ապստամբէր եւ գրգռէր զթագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ, եւ առնէր պատերազմ. եւ թէ զիա՛րդ լինէր առաջնորդ թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ, եւ ածէր հէն յաշխարհն Հայաստանի. եւ կամ զիա՛րդ գերէր զոսկերս Արշակունեաց. կամ զիարդ զօրավարն Վասակ թափեաց զգերեալսն եւ յաղթեաց թշնամւոյն:	24:0 How Meruzhan rebelled, provoked king Shapuh of Iran into further military actions; and how he became a leader for the Iranian king Shapuh, conducted bandit raids into the land of Armenia; and how he captured the bones of the Arsacid kings. How Vasak, the general of Armenia, freed what had been captured and defeated the enemy:
24:1 Ապա յետ այսորիկ Մերուժան վատանշան գրգռէր զթագաւորն Պարսից զՇապուհն ի վերայ թագաւորին Արշակայ մեծաւ բարկութեամբ:	24:1 After this the infamous Meruzhan in great anger provoked the Iranian king, Shapuh, against king Arshak:
24:2 Ապա զօրաժողով լինէր թագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ, եւ լրտեսս արձակէր` դիտել զարքայն Հայոց զԱրշակ:	24:2 The Iranian king, Shapuh, massed troops and dispatched spies to observe Arshak, king of Armenia:
24:3 Եւ մինչ նա դեռ զգուշացեալ Արշակ արքայն Հայոց հանդերձ իւրովք զօրօքն զատրպատական սահմանօքն, զի անդ սպասէր զօրացն Պարսից, նոցա առաջնորդ կալեալ զՄերուժանն` ընդ այլ կարթել ասպատակ յաշխարհն Հայոց առնէին:	24:3 And while Arshak, king of Armenia, with his troops were located near the Atrpatakan borders, watching those parts - for he expected the Iranian troops to come from there - the spies, with Meruzhan as their leader, came through a different area and raided Armenia:
24:4 Զի ընդ Աղձնիս եւ ընդ Ծոփս մեծ, ընդ Անգեղ տունն եւ ընդ գաւառն Անձտայ ընդ Ծոփս Շահունոց, ընդ Մզուր գաւառն եւ ընդ Դարանաղէ, ընդ Եկեղեաց, զկողմանս այնց գաւառացն Շապուհ թագաւորն Պարսից հանդերձ անթիւ զօրօքն ասպատակել հեղեալ ծաւալէր բազմութեամբ իբրեւ զջուրս բազումս:	24:4 They came through Aghjnik, Greater Copk, Angeghtun, through the district of Anjit, through Shahunots Copk, through the district of Mzur, through Daranaghe and Ekegheats. Shapuh, the king of Iran, with countless troops entered these districts and spread about with his multitudes like a flood:
24:5 Այրացաւեր առնէին, եւ զանթիւ մարդիկ արկանէին ի սուր սուսերի իւրեանց. զկանայս եւ զմանկտի հանէին ընդ ցից սայլից, զկէսս զոր ի ներքոյ կամացն արկեալ կասուին:	24:5 They subjected the country to fire and pillage, putting many men to their swords. Women and children were thrown under the shafts of wagons, some were ground under threshers:
24:6 Եւ զարանց բազմութիւնս տային ի կոխումն փղաց. եւ զառանց թուոյ զմատաղ մանկտոյն զայն ի գերութիւն վարէին. եւ զբազում ամուրս քանդէին, եւ զբերդս աւերէին զամուրս:	24:6 a multitude of men were trampled by elephants and a countless number of tender children were led into captivity. They demolished many strongholds and secure fortresses:
24:7 Եւ առին աւերեցին զմեծ քաղաքն Տիգրանակերտ, որ էր ի գաւառին Աղձնեաց յիշխանութեան բդեշխին. քառասուն հազար երդ, զայն նոյնհետայն ի գերութիւն խաղացուցին. եւ ինքեանք ի Ծոփս մեծ արշաւեցին:	24:7 They took and destroyed the great city of Tigranakert, which was located in the district of Aghjnik in the principality of the bdeshx. The Iranians immediately led [40000] households into slavery, and then invaded Greater Copk:
24:8 Եւ անդ էին բերդք` զոր առին. եւ էր` զոր ոչ կարացին առնուլ:	24:8 There they found fortresses, some of which they took, others they were unable to take:
24:9 Եւ գային պահ արկանէին շուրջ զԱնգեղ զամուր բերդաւն, որ է յԱնկեղ տանն գաւառին. զի անդ էին բազում Հայոց թագաւորացն գերեզմանք շիրմացն արանցն Արշակունեաց. բազում գանձք մթերեալ մնացեալ կային ի նախնեացն ի հնոց ժամանակաց հետէ:	24:9 They came and besieged the secure fortress of Angegh which is in Angeghtun district, for at that place were the mausoleums of many of the Armenian Arsacid kings, and many treasures had been stored and kept there from their ancestors, from ancient times on:
24:10 Չուան պահ արկին զբերդաւն. ապա իբրեւ ոչ կարէին առնուլ վասն ամրութեան տեղւոյն, թողուին եւ գնային:	24:10 So, the Iranians went and besieged that fortress. But when they were unable to take it because of the security of the place, they left off and departed:
24:11 Եւ զբազում բերդօք զանց առնէին, զի ոչ կարէին մարտնչել ընդ ամուրսն. բայց միայն մատնեցաւ ի ձեռս նոցա ամուր բերդն Անի ի Դարանաղեաց գաւառին անդ, զի չարագործն Մերուժանն հնարաւորութեամբ մեքենայէր ամուր բերդին այնմիկ:	24:11 They passed by many fortresses because they were unable to fight with the strongholds. However, the secure fortress of Ani in Daranaghi district was betrayed into their hands, because the malefactor Meruzhan devised a strategem against this secure fortress:
24:12 Ելանէին ի վեր, եւ կործանէին զպարիսպ նորա, եւ իջուցանէին անթիւ գանձս ի բերդէն:	24:12 The Iranians climbed up, destroyed the walls, and had countless treasures lowered down from the fortress:
24:13 Եւ բանային զգերեզմանս զառաջին թագաւորացն Հայոց զարանց քաջաց զարշակունոյ, եւ խաղացուցանէին ի գերութիւն զոսկերս թագաւորացն. բայց միայն զգերեզման շիրմին Սանատրկոյ արքային ոչ կարացին բանալ վասն անհեդեդ սկայագործ հաստաշինած ճարտարագործ արարածոցն:	24:13 They opened the tombs of the first kings of the Armenians, of the Arsacid braves, and took the bones of the kings into captivity. However, they were unable to open only the tomb of king Sanatruk because of its colossal, gigantic firm construction:
24:14 Ապա գնացեալք անտի ի բաց մերժէին, ընդ այլ դիմեալ` ասպատակս կապէին, ընդ կողմանսն Բասենոյ յառաջ խաղային եւ ինքեանք, կամէին ի թիկանցն կուսէ անկանել հասանել ի վերայ զօրացն թագաւորին Հայոց:	24:14 So, they left that place and went on elsewhere raiding, advancing through the Basen areas seeking to come up behind the troops of the king of Armenia:
24:15 Ապա մինչ դեռ այս ամենայն լինէր, գուժկան հասանէր առ թագաւորն Արշակ, եւ ասեն նմա. Դու աւադիկ առաջոյ սպասես թշնամեացն, նստիս յԱտրպատականի. իսկ թշնամիքն զթիկամբք անկեալ կոտորեցին զաշխարհս. եւ արդ դիմեալ գան ի վերայ քո:	24:15 While all this was taking place, the bad news reached king Arshak. They said to him: “Behold, while you were sitting in Atrpatakan expecting the enemy to come forth, they passed through the side, destroyed the land, and now are coming against you:
24:16 Ապա իբրեւ զայս լսէին թագաւորն Հայոց Արշակ եւ զօրավարն նորին Վասակ, հանդէս առնէին զօրացն իւրեանց:	24:16 When king Arshak of Armenia and his general, Vasak, heard this they reviewed their troops:
24:17 Եւ գտան ի ժամանակին անդ ընդ ձեռամբն զօրավարին Վասակայ արք գործոց իբրեւ վաթսուն հազար, ընտիրք եւ պատերազմողք, որ միամիտք եւ միասիրտք էին միաբանութեան գործոցն պատերազմին, հասանել մարտնչել ի վերայ որդւոց եւ կանանց իւրեանց, եւ ի վերայ աշխարհին դնել զանձինս իւրեանց մինչեւ ի մահ եւ ի վերայ աշխարհին գաւառացն բնակութեան, հասանել մարտնչել ի վերայ եկեղեցեացն իւրեանց, ի վերայ ուխտին պաշտամանն որբոյ եկեղեցեաց իւրեանց, ի վերայ հաւատոց ուխտին անուան Աստուծոյ իւրեանց, փոխանակ բնակ տերանց իւրեանց Արշակունւոց:	24:17 At that time under general Vasak’s disposition were some [60000] select and martial men who were united in war with one mind and one heart to go and fight for their sons and wives, to give their lives for the land and for the districts of the land they inhabited, to fight for their Church, for the oath of worship of their blessed churches, for the oath of faith in the name of their God, and for their native Arsacid lords:
24:18 Զի անգամ ոսկերք թագաւորացն մեռելոց եւ բազում ժողովուրդք խլեալք յիւրաքանչիւր տեղեաց, փոփոխեցան յօտարութիւն:	24:18 For many people and even the bones of the dead kings had been seized from their own places and transferred to a foreign land:
24:19 Ապա Վասակ սպարապետն հանդերձ վաթսուն հազարօք յառաջ խաղայր, դարձեալ ընդ կրուկ թողոյր զթագաւորն Արշակ յամուր տեղւոջ ուրեմն յերկրին Մարաց, հանդերձ սպասաւորօքն:	24:19 The sparapet Vasak with [60000] troops advanced, turning about, leaving king Arshak in a secure spot somewhere in the Marats country with attendants:
24:20 Եւ ինքն գայր հասանէր ի միջնաշխարհն Հայոց ի գաւառն Այրայրատու. եւ հասանէր գտանէր զզօրսն Պարսից, զի հասեալ մածեալ էին բազմութեան իբրեւ զաւազ առ ափն ծովու, բանակեալ զգաւառաւն այրայրատեան:	24:20 Then Vasak himself came and reached the interior of Armenia, the district of Ayrayrat. He found the Iranian troops which had encamped en masse in the district of Ayrayrat. resembling the sand on the seashore:
24:21 Ապա հասեալ Վասակ հանդերձ գնդաւն` որ ընդ իւրն էին, անկանէր ի վերայ բանակին թագաւորին Պարսից ի գիշերի յեղակարծումն ժամանակի:	24:21 Vasak and the brigade with him fell upon the banak of the Iranian king suddenly, at night:
24:22 Եւ անդէն առ հասարակ ընդ սուր հանէին զզօրսն ամենայն Պարսից. բայց միայն թագաւորն միաձի ճողոպրեալ մազապուր փախչէր:	24:22 And they put all of the Iranian troops to the sword. Only the king Shapuh was able to escape by a hairsbreadth and flee:
24:23 Զհետ հալածէին զմնացեալսն փախուցեալսն արտաքոյ իւրեանց սահմանացն, եւ թափէին ի նոցանէ աւար բազում եւ անթիւ, զի ոչ գոյր նոցա չափ համարոյ:	24:23 The Armenians pursued the survivors and chased them beyond their borders, and retrieved from them much, countless loot, an inestimable amount:
24:24 Եւ առ հասարակ արկանէին զնոսա ի սուր սուսերի իւրեանց, եւ թափէին ի նոցանէն զոսկերս թագաւորացն իւրեանց, զոր Պարսիկք խաղացուցեալ տանէին ի գերութիւն յաշխարհն Պարսից:	24:24 They put all of the Iranians to the sword and retrieved from them the bones of their kings which the Iranians were taking into captivity to the land of Iran:
24:25 Զի ասէին ըստ իւրեանց հեթանոսութեանն ըստ օրինացն, թէ վասն այսորիկ բարձեալ տանիմք զոսկերս թագաւորացն Հայոց յաշխարհն մեր, զի փառք թագաւորացն եւ բախտքն եւ քաջութիւն աշխարհիս աստի գնացեալ ընդ ոսկերս թագաւորացն` յաշխարհն մեր եկեսցեն:	24:25 For they, in accordance with their pagan faith note: “We are taking the bones of the Armenian kings to our land so that the glory, fortune and bravery of the kings of this land will come to our land with the kings’ bones”. Vasak retrieved all that had been captured from the land of Armenia:
24:26 Ապա թափէր Վասակ զգերութիւնն ամենայն զՀայաստան աշխարհին. եւ զոսկերս թագաւորացն Հայոց, զորս թափեաց Վասակ, հանեալ թաղեցին յամուր ի գեւղն` որ Աղձքն անուանին, յԱյրարատ գաւառին` որ կայն ի խինձ ի գոգս ի ծոցս յանձուկս ի դժուարս լերինն մեծի, զոր Արագածն կոչեն:	24:26 The bones of the Armenian kings which Vasak retrieved they buried at the stronghold in the village called Aghjk, in the Ayrarat district, which is located in one of the narrow crevices of the great Aragac mountain, in a place difficult of access:
24:27 Եւ ինքեանք փոյթ արարեալ զաշխարհ նուաճել, յարդարել կարգել յօրինել շինել զամենայն զգերութիւն յաւերածոյն եւ այրեցածոյն:	24:27 They then took care to pacify the land, to reform, to rebuild all the pillaged and burned places and to see to the captives:
24:28 Բայց յայնմ նուագի եւս ապրէր Մերուժանն չարագործն, փախուցեալ ընդ արքային Պարսից:	24:28 But this time too the malefactor Meruzhan had survived, fleeing along with the Iranian king:
24:29 Եւ յայնմ հետէ պահ ունէին իւրեանց աշխարհին. արքայն Արշակ հանդերձ զօրավարաւն Վասակաւ յերկոսին դուրս սահմանացն զգուշանային մինչեւ զամենայն աւուրս կենդանութեան իւրեանց:	24:29 Thereafter king Arshak and general Vasak protected their land, carefully watching the two gates of the borders, all the days of their lives:
