6:0 Յաղագս եթէ զիա՛րդ, իբրեւ աքսորեցաւ սուրբն Ներսէս եւ ընգեցաւ ի կղզին յանապատն, թէ ո՛րպէս կամ զիա՛րդ կերակրեցաւ եւ կամ ո՛րպէս յԱստուծոյ եղեն սքանչելիք զամս ինն:

 6:0 About how Saint Nerses was exiled to a deserted island and how he ate, or how God worked miracles for nine years:

6:1 Ապա իբրեւ սրտմտեալ թագաւորն Վաղէս` յարոյց հալածանս ի վերայ եկեղեցեաց սրբոց ընդ ամենայն կողմանս իւրոյ իշխանութեանն, եւ զամենայն եպիսկոպոսս մեկնեաց եհան յիւրաքանչիւր ժողովրդոց եւ ընգէց զնոսա յօտարութիւն, առաւելիւր նիւթեալ մեծաւ բարկութեամբ ի վերայ սրբոյն Ներսէսի. վասն զի պատճառք մահուան միամօր որդւոյն սիրելոյ իւրոյ եղեւ նա, ապա չարապէս չարութեամբ դառնութեամբ մահուան կամէր վճարել զնա:

 6:1 When king Valens, enraged, began persecutions against the holy churches in all parts of his empire and sent all the bishops away from their flocks to foreign lands, he was inflamed with even greater anger at Saint Nerses, because he considered him the cause of death of his only beloved son, therefore he wanted to betray him to a painful bitter death:

6:3 Ապա ետ հրաման ընգենուլ զնա ի կղզին մի մեծ ովկիանոս ահագին ծովու, յանապատ յանջուր տեղի մի` ուր ոչ բոյս ինչ դալար, եւ ոչ արմատ ինչ, եւ ոչ այլ ինչ ամենեւին` որ ինչ ի պէտս մարդկան լինիցի. բայց միայն քար եւ աւազ ապառաժ, եւ ոչ ճանապարհ ուրեք ընդ այն, եւ ոչ գնացք ինչ նաւաց:

 6:3 Then the king ordered him to be exiled to an island in a huge ocean-sea, to a desolate, arid place where there was no greenery and vegetation, there were no roots and nothing else that could be suitable for human nutrition, but there were only stones, sand and rocks. And there was no road there and there was no shipping:

6:4 Ապա անցուցին զնա ի տեղին հրամայեալ, եւ ընդ նմա արս եւթանասուն. այլ արքն որք կէսքն եպիսկոպոս էին յայլոց քաղաքաց, կէսք կղերիկոսք յայլոց եկեղեցեաց:

 6:4 He was taken to the specified place and with him seventy people, half of whom consisted of bishops of other cities and the other half of clerics of other churches:

6:5 Իսկ նա խնդայր եւ ուրախ էր ընդ այն, զի եհաս նմա կրել չարչարանս վասն անուան տեառն Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի Որդւոյն Աստուծոյ:

 6:5 And he was glad that it fell to his lot to endure torments in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God:

6:6 Եւ էին նորա այն որք ընդ նմայն աքսորեցան յիւրոցն` երկու. անուն միոյն Ռաստոմ սարկաւագ, եւ երկրորդին` Տիրանամ. եւ այլք եւթանասունքն որ ընդ նոսա, զորս ուստեք ուստեք ընդ նոսա ամացեալ ի նաւն` ի կղզին խաղացուցին:

 6:6 Of those who were exiled with them, two were his people, one was called Deacon Rustom, the other was Tyrannam, and the seventy others who were with them were recruited from everywhere and drove them onto a ship and took them to the island:

6:7 Եւ գնաց մեկնեցաւ նաւն` որ զնոսայն տանէր, եւ ըստ հողմոյն յաջողութեան ի հնգետասան օր հասանէր ի հրամայեալ տեղին. եւ թափեաց զնոսա նաւն ի կղզին, եւ ինքն այսրէն դարձաւ:

 6:7 The vessel carrying them set off and, thanks to a fair wind, reached the specified place in fifteen days. The ship lowered them to the shore and returned by itself:

6:8 Եւ յայնմ կղզւոջ ոչ գտանէր ոչ ջուր ըմպելոյ եւ ոչ դոյզն ինչ արմատ, զի անարմատ աւազ միայն էր. զի վասն այնորիկ իսկ տարեալ էր զնոսա անդր, զի սովամահ արասցեն զնոսա ըստ խստութեան թագաւորին հրամանին:

 6:8 On this island there was no drinking water, no roots of any kind, and there was only one sand without any vegetation; that’s why they were taken there to starve them to death by strict order of the king:

6:9 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ եհաս նոցա յամել ամսօրեայ մի ժամանակս, որ տկարագոյնքն էին ի նոսա` սկսան նքողել ծարաւել նուաղել եւ ներգեւել դորսովել ի քաղցոյ կամ ի ծարաւոյ:

 6:9 And when they stayed there for about a month, the weaker of them began to experience torments and suffering from hunger and thirst, began to weaken and languish:

6:10 Ապա մխիթարել եւ քաջալերել սկսաւ զամենեսեան Ներսէս, եւ ասէ. Պինդ կացէք, հաստատուն լերուք, եւ մի՛ երկնչիք. զի այն տէր մեր Յիսուս Քրիստոս` որ հրամայեաց ծառոյն սաբեկայ բերել զխոյն պտուղ, եւ ընկալաւ զԻսահակ կենդանի զոհ, եւ օրհնեաց զՅակոբ ի պանդխտութեան, եւ ապրեցոյց զՅովսէփ ի ծառայութենէն եւ տիրացոյց, հրամայեաց եւ մորենւոյն հրով տերեւել ծաղկել, եւ օդոցն հրամայեաց քաղցրութեանն հացին կերակրոյ ի վերուստ ցօղել, եւ զլորամարգին ի թռչնոց տալ ապստամբող եւ դառնացող ժողովրդեանն, եւ ինքն Քրիստոս վէմ եղեալ` ընդ նոսա շրջէր յանապատին յանջրդին, եւ զքաղցրութիւն ջուրցն ի ծարաւ նոցա մատուցանէր, եւ խորհուրդ հանդերձելոցն` որ առ յապա լինելոցն էր` գուշակէր գաւազանաւն ի ձեռն Մովսէսի, վէմն խոցեալ` հոսէր նոցա ջուր, զնոսա անդ զառաջինսն օրինակօքն կեցուցանէր. եւ ինքն կերակրեաց ի սակաւ հացէ զժողովուրդն յանապատի անդ, եւ ըստ ծառոյն` որ զխոյն եբեր` ինքն զխաչէն պրկեալ կախեալ խաչեցաւ:

 6:10 Then Nerses began to encourage everyone and comfort them, saying: “Be firm, stand firm and do not be afraid, for it was our Lord Jesus Christ who ordered the Sabek tree to bear fruit in the form of a ram, and accepted Isaac as a living sacrifice, blessed Jacob in a foreign land, saved Joseph from slavery and made him ruler, ordered the thorn bush to dissolve with fire He ordered the air to send sweet food in the form of dew from above, gave the outraged and embittered people quails to eat, and Christ himself, becoming a stone, wandered with them through the arid desert, delivered sweet water to the thirsty people, and what was to happen in the future, he foreshadowed Moses with a rod, pierced a rock and expelled water for them, and thus then saved their lives, and he himself fed the people with a small amount of bread in the desert, and like the tree that gave the ram, he himself was also nailed to the cross and crucified:

6:11 եւ օրինակաւն ըստ նմանութեան ի կողսն խոցեցաւ, եւ եհան մեզ անտի ջուր փրկութեան ի լուացումն սրբութեան ապաշխարութեան. յաղագս կենաց մերոց եւ ինքն վասն մեր հաց եղեւ, եւ զարիւնն իւր ըմպել ետ մեզ, զի զմարմինն ի մարմինն խառնեսցէ եւ զարիւնն յարիւնն, զի զաստուածութիւնն յոգիս մեր միացուցեալ, զմեզ ընդ սուրբ Հոգւոյն, եւ ի վախճանի զմեզ բնակիցս աստուածութեանն արասցէ. արդ որ այսչափ երախտիս առնէր մեզ, մինչեւ մեք անգամ բանս գոհացողութեան փոխարէն շնորհս ոչ հատուցանէաք նմա, իսկ արդ զիա՞րդ վասն անուան նորա արժանի եղեալք սակաւիկ մի թշնամանաց` սովամահ ինչ կարծիցէք լինել:

6:13 Իսկ արդ նշան խնդրեմք, ոչ. այլ նշան թերահաւատից պիտոյ է, եւ առ զչարսն դարձուցանելոյ յուղղութիւն. այլ մեզ, գիտէ տէր զպիտոյսն մեր եւ զօգտակարսն, եւ ըստ այնմ պատրաստէ զինչ եւ պիտոյ է մեզ:

 6:13 No, a sign is needed for the unbelievers and for the correction of the wicked, but as for us, the Lord knows our needs and what is useful to us, and according to this He will prepare what we need:

6:14 Իսկ մեք ոչ այնպէս, որ քա՜ւ եւ մի լիցի, որպէս ասացաւն. ասէ, «Ազգ չար, նշան խնդրէ:

 6:14 We are not of those about whom it is said that “the evil generation is looking for a sign,” God forbid:

6:15 Իսկ մեզ կարեւորքն առանց ուրոյն ի մարդկան աղանդէն չիք հնար լինել:

 6:15 What we need cannot be obtained without the help of people:

6:16 Իսկ տէրն կարող է եւ առանց կերակրոյ պահել զմեզ կենդանիս, եւ կարող է տալ կերակուր. եւ արդարացուցանել կարող է, եւ արժանիս առնել` վասն իւրոյ անուանն պատրաստել մեզ մեռանել. տալ մեզ զսովորական ընդունելութիւն բնութեան մահուն, որ չերթայ ուրեք ի մարդկանէ, այլ պատճառս միայն առնէ զանուն իւր ի վերայ աներեւոյթ մարմնոյն պահէ, եւ իւրոյ արքայութեանն զմեզ բագորդս բաժանորդս առնէ:

 6:16 And the Lord can keep us alive even without food, he can give us food, he can justify us, he can honor us with death in his name, giving us an ordinary natural death from which man has no salvation, and the reason for it is his power over the invisible body; he will join us to his kingdom:

6:17 Կարող է եւ ի խաղաղութեան վաղճանել, եւ առնել արժանիս արքայութեան կարգացն:

 6:17 He can also send us a peaceful death and honor the kingdom:

6:18 Զայս եւ այսպիսի եւ որ երթայր զհետ սորին` իբրեւ խօսեցաւ, արդ` ասէ` դի՛ք ծունր ամենեքեան, զի արժանի միայն լիցուք մարդասիրութեանն Քրիստոսի:

 6:18 Having said this and many more similar things, he added: “Lay down all of you prostrations to the earth in order to be worthy of Christ’s love for humanity:

6:19 Եւ ի դնել նոցա երիցս անգամ ծունր եւ կալ յաղօթս, եւ յարեաւ ի ծովու անդ հողմ սաստիկ, եւ սկսաւ ընկենուլ ի կղզի անդր ձուկն սաստիկ յոյժ, մինչեւ շեղջս շեղջս կուտէր ի ցամաքի կղզւոյն. եւ ընդ նմին փայտ սաստիկ յոյժ:

 6:19 And when they bowed to the ground three times and prayed, a strong wind rose in the sea and began to throw a large number of fishes onto the island, so that heaps were formed there, as well as a lot of firewood:

6:20 Իբրեւ հանին կուտեցին զփայտն, խորհէին թէ հուր պիտոյ է, որով զփայտն լուցցուք:

 6:20 When they collected the firewood and piled it in a pile, they thought that they needed a fire to light the firewood:

6:21 Յանկարծակի ինքնին լուցեալ փայտն հրով վառէր. եւ նոքա յարուցեալք գոհացեալ, զաղօթսն կատարելոյ` մատեան արկին ի խորովս, եւ բազմեցան եւ մատեան յուտել:

 6:21 Suddenly the firewood ignited by itself and began to burn. Then they got up from prayer, offered thanks, fried the fish, sat down and began to eat:

6:22 Եւ իբրեւ կերան յագեցան, եւ պէտք եղեալ ըմպելոյ ջուր` յոտն եկաց սուրբն Ներսէս, եւ մատուցեալ փորեաց զաւազն ի կղզւոջ, եւ բխեաց աղբեւր` ջուր քաղցր անոյշ, եւ անտի ըմպէին որք հանապազորդք էին ի կղզւոջն:

 6:22 When they had eaten and were full, and they needed water to drink, Saint Nerses got up, dug up the sand on the island, and there a spring of fresh water was clogged, and from there those who stayed on the island always drank:

6:23 Յայնմ կղզւոջ զայս օրինակ կերակրեալ լինէին ի ծովէ անտի. եւ հանապազ մխիթարէր զնոսա սուրբն Ներսէս, եւ ասէր. Այսպէս յիշեցէք եւ ի մտի կալարուք զբանն տեառն զոր ասաց, թէ «Խնդրեցէք զարքայութիւն Աստուծոյ եւ զարդարութիւն նորա, եւ այն ամենայն տացի եւ յաւելցի:

 6:23 On this island, they thus received food from the sea, and Saint Nerses always comforted them and note: “So remember and keep in mind the words of the Lord, who note: “Seek first of all the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all this will be added to you:

6:24 Տեսէք, եղբարք, զի ահաւասիկ իբրեւ հայր յորդիս մատուցեալ է առ մեզ Աստուած` խրատել զմեզ, զի զմեզ պիտանիս արասցէ, եւ զանունն քաջութեան ժառանգեցուսցէ մեզ, եւ զմեզ մեծաց վարձուց արժանիս արասցէ:

 6:24 You see, brothers, that God treats us as He treats his sons, for our edification, to make us useful people, to give us an honorable name and to honor us with the greatest rewards:

6:25 Զի զպատճառս սակաւիկ առաքինութեան ի մէնջ խնդրէ. այնչափ միայն, զի սիրեսցուք զնա. եւ ապա զանթիւ զանչափ զանկշիռ զանհամեմատ բարեացն առնէ զբարերարութիւնս սքանչելեաց իւրոց. եւ ցուցանէ զբարիատուր զերախտապարգեւ հատուցմունս վասն իւրոյ մարդասիրութեանն:

 6:25 In return for this, he demands from us a little virtue, only that we love him, for which he creates for us an innumerable, immeasurable, uncountable, incomparable number of benefits, benefits and miracles, and in his love for humanity repays with good:

6:26 Քանզի եւ զանձն իւր ոչ խնայեաց դնել ի վերայ մեր, այլ կերակուր եւ ըմպելի եւս եղեւ մեզ:

6:28 Արեգական մտանելոյ կային եղբարքն, եւ ապա տէրունատուր կերակրովն ուրախ լինէին, յընգենուլ ալեացն ի պատրաստել զկերակուր:

 6:28 The brothers waited for the sunset and then rejoiced in the food sent by the Lord, thrown out by the waves for cooking:

6:29 Իսկ սուրբն Ներսէս յեւթն աւուրն ի կիրակէին հասեալ միայն, ապա ճաշակէր:

 6:29 And Saint Nerses on the seventh day, only when Sunday arrived, then he ate:

6:30 Այլ զայս օրինակ համակ տայր նոցա զքաջալերութիւն սուրբն Ներսէս ամիսս ինն, որ եղեն յայն կղզւոջ:
