38:0 Յաղագս եթէ զիա՛րդ սպարապետն Հայոց Մանուէլ, հանդերձ ամենայն աշխարհաւն Հայոց, ձեռն ետ ի թագաւորն Պարսից. եւ մարզպան եւ աշխարհակալ աշխարհին Հայոց զառաջինն ած ի թագաւորէն Պարսից զՍուրէն, եւ մեծաւ պարգեւօք մեծարեցաւ ի նմանէ. եւ թէ ո՛րպէս յետոյ խորամանկութեամբ Մերուժանայ արծրունւոյ եղեւ ապստամբութիւն, եւ պատերազմունք յուզեցան:

 38:0 How Mushegh, the sparapet of Armenia, together with the entire land gave his hand to the Iranian king, and brought Suren as the first marzpan and governor of the land of Armenia from the Iranian king; and how he was exalted by him with great gifts; and how, because of the duplicity of Meruzhan Arcruni, a rebellion broke out followed by war:

38:1 Ապա յետ այսորիկ առաքեցին Զարմանդուխտ տիկինն Հայոց եւ սպարապետն Մանուէլ զԳարջոյլ Մաղխազ, եւ ընդ նմա զբազումս ի նախարարացն Հայոց, հրովարտակօք` ընձայիւք եւ պատարագօք առ թագաւորն Պարսից, զի ի նա ձեռս տայցեն եւ նա պաշտիցեն, եւ նմա միամտութեամբ ծառայեսցեն, եւ տայցեն նմա զաշխարհս Հայոց:

 38:1 Now after this, Zarmanduxt, the tikin of Armenia, and sparapet Manuel sent Garjoyl Maghxaz and many of the Armenian naxarars with him to the king of Iran, bearing hrovartaks, presents and gifts. This was to show support for him and to defend him, to offer to serve him loyally, and to give him the land of Armenia:

38:2 Եւ չոգան հասին Գարջոյլն, եւ որք ընդ նմայն էին, ի դուռն թագաւորին Պարսից. մատուցին նմա զհրովարտակսն զտիկնոջն եւ զսպարապետին Հայոց, եւ ետուն նմա զյղեալ պատգամսն հնազանդութեան:

 38:2 Garjoyl and those with him arrived at the court of the Iranian king. They gave him the hrovartaks of the tikin and the sparapet of Armenia as well as the messages of obedience which had been sent:

38:3 Եւ յորժամ ետես զնոսա թագաւորն Պարսից, մեծաւ խնդութեամբ ընկալեալ զնոսա, եւ մեծապէս մեծարանօք պատուեաց զնոսա, եւ մեծաւ պարգեւաւ առնէր զԳարջոյլն:

 38:3 As soon as the Iranian king saw them, he received them with delight, honoring them with great exaltation. He gave Garjoyl great pargew:

38:4 Եւ ընդ նմա առաքէր յերկիրն Հայոց զՍուրէն պարսիկ մի ճոխ եւ նախարարացն իւրոց. եւ ընդ նմա յղեաց տասն հազար հեծեալս վառեալս սպառազէնս, զի երթիցէ Սուրէն յաշխարհն Հայոց ի թիկունս օգնականութեան զօրավարին Մանուէլի, եւ պահել ի թշնամեաց զտիկինն զԶարմանդուխտ:

 38:4 The king sent to the country of Armenia along with Garjoyl one of his wealthy naxarars, an Iranian named Suren. He also sent [10000] armed cavalrymen, so that Suren could go to the land of Armenia, help general Manuel and protect tikin Zarmanduxt from enemies:

38:5 Եւ ետ թագաւորն Պարսից տանել ի ձեռն Սուրենայ թագ եւ պատմուճան, եւ զվառ թագաւորացն տիկնոջն Զարմանդխտոյ, եւ թագս մանկանցն որդւոցն երկոցունց Արշակայ եւ Վաղարշակայն:

 38:5 The Iranian king had Suren take a crown, a robe, and the emblem of kings to tikin Zarmanduxt and crowns to the two young Arsacids, Arshak and Vagharshak:

38:6 Զսոյն եւ սպարապետին Մանուէլի սոյնպէս ետ տանել զթագաւորական պատմուճանն, սամոյր մի եւ զգլխոյ պատիւ գարգմանակ ոսկի արծաթ, ու ի պատիւ գլխոյ ի վերայ գագաթանն ի թիկանց արծուոյն` հանգոյցք թագի կապեալ աշխարաւանդ հանգոյց, եւ լանջաց պատիւ` ապիզակ, որպէս օրէնք են ունել թագաւորաց. եւ շիկակարմիր խորան, եւ ի վերայ խորանին արծուի նշան, եւ սրահակս մեծամեծ եւ կապուտակ երկնագոյն հովանոցս:

 38:6 He also sent to sparapet Manuel a royal robe, a sable, a patiw for the head with a gold and silver gargmanak and the figure of an eagle held to the crown with an ashxarawand clasp; an apizak brooch of honor for the chest, which by law only kings have; a tent of red leather and on it the figure of an eagle; very great hangings, and skyblue parasols:

38:7 Եւ ոսկի սպաս տաճարին առաքէր սպարապետին Մանուէլի. եւ տայր նմա յիւրմէ ձեռանէ իշխանութիւն մեծ ի վերայ աշխարհին Հայոց:

 38:7 He sent sparapet Manuel gold tachar vessels, and by his own hand gave him great authority over the land of Armenia:

38:8 Եւ եկն եհաս Գարջոյլն խորխոռունի յերկիրն Հայոց, եւ էած զՍուրէն պարսիկ` տասն հազարաւն:

 38:8 Garjoyl Xorxorhuni came to the country of Armenia bringing along the Iranian Suren with [10000] troops:

38:9 Եկին բերին զպարգեւսն տիկնոջն եւ մանկանց նորա. սոյնպէս սպարապետին Մանուէլի. ունէին պարգեւս իւրաքանչիւր աւագացն, եւ տանուտէրացն իւրաքանչիւր մեծամեծացն Հայոց:

 38:9 They brought the pargews for the tikin and her children as well as for sparapet Manuel. They also had pargews for each of the nobles, tanuters, and grandees of Armenia:

38:10 Եւ յորժամ տեսանէին զմեծարանսն եւ զսէր թագաւորին Պարսից, տիկինն Զարմանդուխտ եւ սպարապետն զօրավարն Հայոց Մանուէլ մեծաւ խնդութեամբ մեծարէին զՍուրէնն:

 38:10 When tikin Zarmanduxt and the sparapet general of Armenia, Manuel, saw the exaltation and affection of the Iranian king, with great delight they exalted Suren:

38:11 Տային զաշխարհն Հայոց ի ձեռն Սուրենայ, եւ հնազանդէին հրամանաց թագաւորին Պարսից. եւ կարգէին թագաւորին Պարսից յաշխարհէն Հայոց հարկս` տալ ընձայս եւ պատարագս:

 38:11 They entrusted the land of Armenia to Suren and were obedient to the commands of the Iranian king. From the land of Armenia, they set up taxes for the king of Iran, giving presents and gifts:

38:12 Սոյնպէս եւ մարզպանին Սուրենայ հասս եւ կօշիկս եւ զպիտոյս զռոճկացն. սոյնպէս եւ տասն հազարացն դարման եւ կերակուր ըստ պիտոյիցն:

 38:12 and also (providing) has, shoes, and the necessary stipends for the marzpan Suren and victuals and necessary food for the [10000] troops:

38:13 Եւ սրտի մտօք արարին իւրեանց թիկունս. եւ տէր գտեալ իւրեանց զարքայն Պարսից, եւ կային ի ծառայութեան նորա. եւ ստէպ ստէպ դեսպանք թագաւորին Պարսից երթային եւ գային յերկիրն Հայոց. եւ մեծապէս զմտերմութիւն միամտութեանն, որ էրն, ցուցանէին թագաւորին. եւ ստէպ առաքէր պարգեւս տիկնոջն Զարմանդխտոյն. սոյնպէս եւ զօրավարին Հայոց Մանուէլի:

 38:13 They sincerely supported them, considering the king of Iran as their lord whom they served. Ambassadors of the Iranian king were constantly coming and going to the country of Armenia. They greatly displayed to the king the intimacy of the alliance which existed, and the king was constantly sending pargews to tikin Zarmanduxt and to Manuel, the general of Armenia:

38:14 Յոյժ մտերիմ եւ սիրելի լինէր Մանուէլ թագաւորին Պարսից եւ մեծապէս փառաւորեալ աւագանայր ի նմանէն:

 38:14 Manuel was very intimate with the king of Iran, beloved by him, and he was greatly glorified by him:

38:15 Եւ Մերուժանն արծրունի իբրեւ տեսանէր զայն ամենայն փառս աւագութեան, որովք շքեղացոյց զՄանուէլ արքայն Պարսից, զի որպէս զեղբայր կամ զորդի այնպէս պատուեաց զնա, յոյժ նախանձէր նա ընդ փառսն Մանուէլի. եւ խնդրէր նա հնարս հնարել, հանել զնա յաչաց թագաւորին Պարսից, զի փոխանակ նորա ինքն լիցի սիրելի:

 38:15 When Meruzhan Arcruni saw all the glory of seniority with which the Iranian king glorified Manuel for he honored him as a brother or a son, he became very jealous of Manuel’s glory, and sought some means of removing him from his favored position with the Iranian king, in order to be himself the beloved one:

38:16 Եւ իբրեւ այլ հնարս ինչ ոչ կարէր գտանել դուրս նենգութեանցն առ Պարսիկս, ընդ որ մտցէ, ապա խորհեցաւ նա ընդ միտս իւր զնենգութիւն չար, եւ կեղծաւորութեամբ իւրով զգործ իւր յառաջացոյց:

 38:16 But when Meruzhan was unable to find any ruse except treachery toward the Iranians he plotted some wicked treachery and advanced his work with hypocrisy:

38:17 Զի իբրեւ նա յեցաւ ի միամտութիւն զօրավարին Մանուէլի, սկսաւ նախ հպատակութեամբ զմիտսն գողանալ, նախ մտերմութեամբ հաճել զմիտս նորա. ապա զանձն իւր հոգածու եւ խնամակալ երեւեցուցանէր նմա. ապա եկեալ գուշակութիւն առնէր նմա սուտ ի քմաց իւրոց` թէ Գիտասջիր դու, ո՛ Մանուէլ, զի դեսպան լեալ է յարքայէն Պարսից. յաղագս քո բերեալ ունին հրաման առ Սուրէնն, զի զքեզ կալցին կապեսցեն. կամ աստէն սպանցեն, կամ ոտիւք եւ ձեռօք եւ պարանոցաւ կապելով մեծաւ զգուշութեամբ տանել առ թագաւորն Պարսից. արդ դուն գիտա՛, տե՛ս խորհեաց ընդ միտս քո թէ զի՛նչ գործեսցես:

 38:17 He pretended to enter into intimacy with general Manuel, trying first to win him over through acts of subordination, to please him with intimacy. Then he gave himself out to appear as Manuel’s trustee and guardian. Next, he came to deliver this false and capricious information: “Know, oh Manuel, that an emissary has come from the king of Iran to Suren with an order to seize and bind you and either to kill you here, or to bind you with great care, foot, hand, and neck, and to take you to the king of Iran. So be advised and think what you will do:

38:18 Եւ եղեւ յորժամ լուաւ զայս Մանուէլ, կայր զարմացեալ հիացեալ ընդ միտս իւր. եւ ասէր թէ չիք իմ յանցուցեալ առ Պարսիկս, է՞ր աղագաւ զայն առնիցէ ընդ մեզ:

 38:18 When Manuel heard this, he was astonished inwardly and note: “I have committed no transgressions against the Iranians, so why are they doing this to us:

38:19 Եւ ասէ Մերուժանն ցՄանուէլ. Ես ճշգրտեցի եւ հաստատեցի, զի իրքդ այդ ստոյգ են. մեծաւ սիրով եւ հոգաբարձութեամբ գուշակ եղէ քեզ:

 38:19 Meruzhan said to Manuel: “I have verified and confirmed it, and it is so:

38:20 Իսկ իբրեւ հաւատաց բանին Մերուժանայ Մանուէլն, եւ կարծեաց ի միտս իւր` թէ ստոյգ են բանքն այն զոր լուաւ, ապա գունդ կազմեաց, եւ զօր բազում առ ինքն կուտեաց զօրավարն Հայոց Մանուէլ:

 38:20 When Manuel believed what Meruzhan had told him as accurate, the general of Armenia organized a brigade and assembled many troops:

38:21 Եւ մինչ դեռ խաղաղութեամբ Սուրէնն իւրով բանակաւն բանակեալ էր յանհոգս յանկարծ եւ աննենգ խաղաղութեամբ, իբրեւ ոչ ինչ գոյր ի մէջ նոցա նենգութիւն դաւաճանութեան ըստ համբաւահան չարագործն Մերուժանայ, յանկարծօրէն յեղակարծումն զօրավարն Հայոց Մանուէլ հասանէր անկանէր ի վերայ բանակին Սուրենայ, եւ զտասն հազարսն զՊարսիկսն միանգամայն կոտորէր:

 38:21 Thus, while Suren was peacefully encamped with his banak in unconcerned peace without a suspicion of duplicity, since in fact there was no treachery being planned as the gossiping malefactor Meruzhan had said, suddenly the general of Armenia, Manuel, fell upon Suren’s banak unexpectedly, killing the [10000] Iranian soldiers:

38:22 Բայց զմարզպան Սուրէնն միաձի արձակէր, շնորհել զարեւն իւր` պարգեւ արարեալ:

 38:22 However, Manuel granted the marzpan Suren his life as a pargew and let him go on a horse:

38:23 Եւ զարմացեալ Սուրէն ընդ իրսն ընդ այնոսիկ թէ ընդէ՞ր, է՞ր աղագաւ նա զայս արդեւք գործեաց սիրոյն արձակեալ, ողջանդամ երթիջիր զճանապարհս քո. այլ ես ի Պարսկաց ի խափս այլ ոչ անկայց:

 38:23 Suren was surprised at what had happened, and wanted to know why. Manuel said to Suren: “Because of the affection of friendship, I am releasing you to go on your way in health. But I will not fall into the Iranian trap again:

38:24 Եւ ինքն Մանուէլ Հայոց զգունդն կազմէր, եւ զարսն պատրաստէր. եւ գիտաց այնուհետեւ թէ մեծ թշնամութիւն յարոյց եւ մեծ գրգռութիւն ընդ թագաւորին Պարսից:

 38:24 Then Manuel organized the Armenian brigade and prepared the men. Thereafter he knew that he had aroused great hostility and aggrevation of the Iranian king:

38:25 Եւ յայնմ հետէ զօրավարն Հայոց Մանուէլ հանդերձ ամենայն գնդաւն զտիկին Զարմանդուխտ զկին թագաւորին Պապայ ի գլուխ առեալ, ի տեղի թագաւորացն շրջեցուցանէին. եւ ինքեանք կային ի մարտի պատերազմին յաղագս շինութեան աշխարհին Հայոց յամենայն կողմանց ընդ թշնամիս եւ ընդ սահմանակիցս` որ շուրջ զիւրեամբք էին, եւ աւելի ընդ զօրսն Պարսից զամենայն աւուրս կենաց իւրոց. բայց Մերուժանն գնայր անդր առ թագաւորն Պարսից ամբաստան զՄանուէլէ:

 38:25 Then the general of Armenia, Manuel, and the entire brigade taking king Pap’s wife, Zarmanduxt, at their head caused them to circulate around in the place of kings. They themselves were waging war for the cultivation of the land of Armenia on all sides against the enemies and neighbors around them, and especially against the Iranian troops. Manuel did this all the days of his life. But Meruzhan went to the king of Iran and made accusation against Manuel:
