91:0 Եւ չուեալ այնուհետեւ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի ամենայն ուխտապահ նախարարաւք հանդերձ եւ այլ բազում եւ կազմ գնդաւ. որոց լուեալ զուխտիւք զխնդիրն ի Նիխորոյ Մամիկոնեանն Վահանայ` կամաւ եւ ցնծալից սրտիւ երթային առ նմա:

 91:0 Then Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, departed with all the oath-keeping naxarars and many others, and an organized brigade. Having heard of Nixor’s sworn thesis Vahan Mamikonean went to him willingly and with a joyful heart:

91:1 Եւ եկեալ Մամիկոնեանն Վահան ի գաւառն որ կոչի Արտազ, ի գեաւղն որ անուանեն Եղինդ` դադարէր անդ ինքն եւ ամենայն գունդքն որ էին ընդ նմա. եւ առաքէր առ Նիխոր եւ զիւր եկն տայր գիտել նմա:

 91:1 Vahan Mamikonean came to the district called Artaz, to the village named Eghind, where he and all the brigades with him stopped. He sent to Nixor and made him aware of his arrival:

91:2 Եւ ասէր ցՆիխոր Մամիկոնեանն Վահան. «Արդ` եթէ թուի քեզ գալ իմ եւ տեսանել զքեզ` տո՛ւր ածել առ իս արս աւագս Արիս եւ յականաւոր տոհմաց, որ եկեալ կացցեն աստ առ իմ որեար, մինչեւ եկեալ ես տեսից զքեզ, եւ խաւսեցեալ իմ եւ քո ընդ միմեանս` լուիցուք ի միմեանց` զոր ինչ ի դէպն թուի մեզ առնել:

 91:2 Vahan Mamikonean said to Nixor: “Now if you want me to come and see you, have some senior Aryans and people from noted tohms come here and stay with my folk, until I come to see you and the two of us speak together and hear from each other what we think is appropriate to do:

91:3 Եւ Նիխորոյ լուեալ զեկն եւ զկամս խնդրոյն Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ` վաղվաղակի տայր տանել ցԿամսարականն տէրն Շիրակայ Ներսեհն զԲազէ զԱտրպայական շահապ եւ զՎեհ-Վեհնամ զՀայոց հազարապետ, եւ զՆերշապուհ զՄիհրանայ զեղբայր, եւ հինգ եւս այր այլ աւագ Պարսիկս:

 91:3 When Nixor heard about the arrival and wish of Vahan Mamikonean, he immediately had (these men) sent to Nerseh Kamsarakan, lord of Shirak: Baze, shahap of Atrpatakan, Veh-Vehnam, hazarapet of Armenia, Nershapuh, Mihran’s brother, and five other senior Iranians:

91:4 Եւ Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ տեսեալ զաւագորեարն զոր առաքեալ էր Նիխորոյ` ընդունէր զնոսա խնդութեամբ. եւ ի միասին ուրախացեալք այն աւր` ի վաղիւն թողոյր զութեսեան զնոսա առ իւր հաւատարիմ արս. որոց հրաման տայր` պատուել զնոսա արժանաւորապէս եւ զգուշանալ. եւ ինքն չուեալ գնդաւ եւ կազմութեամբ գնայր առ Նիխոր:

 91:4 Vahan Mamikonean saw the noble folk sent to him by Nixor, and received them happily. Rejoicing together that day, the next day he left the eight (Iranians) with his loyal men, ordering them to honor them worthily and to be careful. Then, with an organized brigade, he went to Nixor:

91:5 Մերձեալք ի գիւղն ուր Նիխոր էր` հրամայէր զաւրուն որ ընդ նմա էին` վառել ըստ աւրինի պատրաստութեան պատերազմի. որք ընդ լսել ի Մամիկոնենէն Վահանայ զհրամանն` պատրաստեալք յամենայնի կազմ ցուցանէին նմա զանձինս:

 91:5 Approaching the village where Nixor was, he ordered the troops who were with him to arm as if in preparation for battle. And on hearing Vahan Mamikonean’s command, they fully prepared and presented themselves:

91:6 Տայր հրամանն Մամիկոնեանն Վահան հնչեցուցանել զփողսն պատերազմականս. եւ ի սաստկութենէ փողոցն ձայնից հնչեալ երկիրն թնդէր. յորմանէ զարհուրեալք արք զաւրուն Նիխորոյ` կարծեցին, թէ խաբէութեամբ ի վնասել զնոսա եկն Մամիկոնեանն Վահան, եւ ոչ սիրով ի նուաճումն խաղաղութեան:

 91:6 Vahan Mamikonean gave the order to sound the war trumpets, and at the furious sound of the blaring trumpets, the earth shook. Amazed, the men of Nixor’s force thought that Vahan Mamikonean had come deceitfully to hurt them, and not in love for peaceful submission:

91:7 Եւ Նիխոր առաքեալ ընդ առաջ նորա արս աւագս` տայր ասել ցՄամիկոնեանն Վահան, եթէ «Ոչ ըստ կարգի Արեաց առնես դու զայդ, այլ նորոգ իրաւք այլ իմն ձեւանաս. յորում յայսմ հետէ քեզ կարի զԱրեաց զկարգն պարտ է ունել եւ հաւանել. քանզի ի չուի` փողով յԱրեաց բանակ սպարապետն միայն Արեաց իշխէ մտանել, եւ այլ ոք զայդ համարձակութիւն ի Պարսիկս ոչ ոք իշխէ առնել:

 91:7 Nixor sent senior men in advance of him and had them say to Vahan Mamikonean: “What you are doing is not in accord with Aryan custom and is a new thing you have fashioned. From now on it is very necessary for you to hold and accept Aryan custom. For only the sparapet of the Aryan army dares to enter the Aryans’ (camp) with the trumpets sounding; and no one would dare to be so audacious to the Iranians:

91:8 Եւ Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ պատասխանի տուեալ Նիխորոյ` ասէր. «Նախ արա՛ զիս Արեաց տեառն ծառայ, ապա եւ առանց ի քէն իսկ ուսանելոյ` թուի թէ եւ ես իսկ գիտեմ զԱրեաց աշխարհի զկարգ եւ զարժանն. մի՛ թուեսցի քեզ հաշուել զիս կարի մոռացկոտ. քանզի եւ ոչ բազում ինչ ամաւք գնացեալ եմ ի ձէնջ:

 91:8 Vahan Mamikonean responded to Nixor, saying: “First let the lord of the Aryans make me a servant, and then, without learning it from you, it seems I (will) know the custom and dignity of the land of the Aryans. Do not think that I am so forgetful, since it has not been so many years since I left you:

91:9 Եւ զայս բանս այսպէս ի ձեռն պատգամաւորի խաւսեցեալ Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ ընդ Նիխորոյ` ապա ինքն իսկ եկեալ տեսանէր զնա յատենի ժամու. վասն զի ընդ ծագել արեւուն եկն Մամիկոնեանն առ Նիխոր:

 91:9 Thus did Vahan Mamikonean say these things to Nixor by means of the messenger, then he himself came to see him at the time of the atean. The Mamikonid came to Nixor at sunrise:

91:10 Եւ Նիխորոյ տեսեալ զՄամիկոնեանն Վահան եւ զայլ նախարարսն զուխտակիցսն ընդ նմա` ցնծալից ուրախութեամբ բազում ժամս ընկալեալ ի գիրկս իւր` ողջունէր զնա. տայր եւ զողջոյն զԱրեաց տեառնն Վաղարշու եւ զամենայն աւագանւոյն. մի ըստ միոջէ յանուանէ ողջունէր եւ զեկեալ նախարարսն Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ` յոյժ սիրով, նոյնպէս զամենայն արս գնդին, զաւագս եւ զկրսերս:

 91:10 When Nixor saw Vahan Mamikonean and the other naxarar oath-keepers with him, he embraced him for many hours and saluted him. He also conveyed the greetings of Vagharsh, lord of the Aryans, and of all the nobility. (Nixor) greeted by name each of the naxarars who had come with Vahan Mamikonean, welcoming them with great affection, and likewise all the men in the brigade, senior and junior:

91:11 Եւ լուեալ Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ զողջոյն Արեաց տեառնն եւ զողջոյն ամենեցունց զբանն աւագանւոյն` շնորհակալութեամբ գոհանայր երկրպագելով եւ խնդալից ուրախութեամբ ընդունէր:

 91:11 When Vahan Mamikonean heard the greetings of the lord of the Aryans and all the court nobility, he prostrated himself giving thanks and received them with great rejoicing:

91:12 Եւ հրաման տուեալ Նիխորոյ` զամենայն արս զաւրուն Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի ի ներքս թողուլ, նոյնպէս եւ աւագ Պարսիկ որերոյ ի ներքս կալ յատենին հրամայէր:

 91:12 Then Nixor commanded that all the men of Vahan Mamikonean’s force be let inside and also ordered the senior Iranian folk to come inside to the atean:

91:13 Եւ կատարեալ զամենայն ասացեալք Նիխորոյ, եւ լցեալ ամենայն ատեանն արամբք որ ընդ Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ էին, եւ այլ Պարսիկ որերով` սկսանէր խաւսել Նիխոր ընդ Մամիկոնենին Վահանայ եւ ասէր:

 91:13 Everything that Nixor said was done, and when the atean was completely full of the men with Vahan Mamikonean and the other Iranian folk, Nixor began speaking with Vahan Mamikonean, as follows:

91:14 Թէպէտ եւ աշխարհակցութեան բնութեամբ չես կեցեալ ընդ իս, այլ ըստ բազում անգամ տեսանելոյ զքեզ ի դրան եւ լսելոյ յաշխարհի մարդկանէ, ի Հայոյ եւ ի Պարսկէ, ոչ յանճանաչող եւ յանպիտան մարդկանէ, այլ ի լաւ եւ ի հայեցող եւ յիմաստուն որերոյ, զոր այժմ յայտնապէս փորձիւ ի միտ առեալ գիտացաք ամենեքեան:

 91:14 Although you did not remain near me as a usual neighbor, nonetheless I have seen you many times at court and heard about you from men of the world, Armenians and Iranians (who are not unseeing or useless men, but good, perspicacious, and wise folk), and now all of us know about you first-hand from experience:

91:15 զի գործ պատերազմի որպէս քաջութեամբ՝ նոյնպէս եւս առաւել խոհականութեամբ եւ իմաստիւք վճարի. որպէս եւ դու զերկոսեանն զայդ ի քում անձին լիով ետուր տեսանել ամենայն Արեաց աշխարհի եւ ճանաչել:

 91:15 Warfare is waged as much by bravery as by prudence and wisdom—maybe more so. You have made the entire Aryan world see and acknowledge both capacities in your person:

91:16 Քանզի զքաջութիւն ցուցեր սակաւ արամբք. քանզի ցանկ կաս կռուելով սակաւուք ընդ բազումս, եւ մեծամեծ զայդպիսի վնասանի առնելով եւ աշխատ ունելով:

 91:16 For you displayed bravery with but few men, always fighting against many men with a few, causing such great injuries and wearing (us) out:

91:17 Եւ զիմաստութիւն յայտ արարեր` գիտելով զժամ կռուոյն եւ զտեղի տալոյ, եւ անվնաս զգունդն ի միջի ունելոյ, եւ միւսում եւս ժամու գործոյ պատրաստ լինել եւ չերկնչել:

 91:17 And you showed wisdom, knowing when to fight, when to give ground, keeping (your) brigade unharmed, but ready at the next moment to fight without fear:

91:18 Զի եթէ ոչ երկու այդ իրք ի քեզ լի եղեալ էին` զիա՞րդ հնար լինէր քեզ այդչափ կարի սակաւ եւ թուով արամբք կալ ընդդէմ այնչափ անթիւ բազմութեան պատերազմող որերոյ, եւ երբեմն մեծապէս յաղթել, եւ երբեմն զարհուրեցուցանել եւ աշխատել:

 91:18 For if these two traits were not present and fully developed in you, how would you have been able to resist such a countless multitude of fighting folk with so few men, and at times to overwhelmingly win, at times to terrify and fatigue:

91:19 Յաղագս որոյ զմտաւ ածեալ իմ զքո այդպիսի արարուած եւ զմտաւորութիւն` կարի քաջ ճանաչեմ զամենայն պատասխանիս, զոր առնելոց ես դու մեզ ամենայն բանի, զոր լսես ի մէնջ:

 91:19 Consequently, recalling your great feat and intellect, I regard all of your replies as extremely brave (when you say that) you will do everything you hear us say:

91:20 Վասն զի թէ զապստամբութենէդ քումմէ հարցանեմք, թէ զիա՞րդ իշխեցեր խորհել, թող թէ եւ առնել՝ պատասխանի տուեալ ասես, թէ չճանաչողութիւնն Պերոզի եւ ի յետսահարութիւն բռնադատեաց զիս մեռանել. որ զծառայութիւնն եւ զվաստակ որպէս զաստուած խնդրէր, եւ զվաստակոյն զհատուցումն առնել` եւ ոչ իբրեւ զմի յանմիտ մարդկանէ խորհէր հատուցանել:

 91:20 For when we ask about your rebellion, how you dared to plot it, let alone effect it, you reply that you were forced as a last resort because of Peroz’ lack of recognition, and that you were forced to the point of death. He demanded service and labor as a god and he thought not to give recompense for that service, as a stupid man would conduct himself:

91:21 Զի քաջի առն քան զբազում ժամս հարանաւք կեցեալ` շատ լաւ է մի աւր ծանուցանել զլաւութիւն անձին եւ մեռանել:

 91:21 For a brave man it is better that he live but one day recognized for personal bravery, and then die, rather than live many hours with blows:

91:22 Եւ ոչ ոք յԱրեաց կարէ քեզ մեղադիր լինել` խորհել քեզ այդպէս խորհուրդ եւ առնել, ո՛չ որ այժմ Արեաց տէրն է, եւ ոչ աւագանի դրանն, որ գամ մի ի միջի են, եւ դու գիտես:

 91:22 None of the Aryans can blame you, not the one who presently is lord of the Aryans, nor the court nobility which now exists, and you know that:

91:23 Վասն զի Պերոզ արքայից արքայ իբրեւ իւրում անձինն եւ որդւոց չմարթաց հոգ տանել` բարի ծառայի առ նա լաւ ինչ զիա՞րդ կարէր խորհել եւ առնել:

 91:23 For if the king of kings, Peroz, was unable to care for the safety of himself and his own sons, how could he concern himself about any good servant he had:

91:24 Զի զայդ գործ, զոր դու գործեցեր` բայց զի չկարէր ոք եւ զի չիշխէր գործել յայնժամ. այլ ամենայն ծառայ այր, տեսանելով զնորա ստամբակութեանն զանչափութիւն` զամենայն աւր առնել խորհէր, եւ չկարացեալ մեռանել` կասէր:

 91:24 What you did, no one could have dreamed of or attempted. But all of (his) servants, seeing the limitlessness of his insolence, thought of doing the same every day, but were unwilling to risk death:

91:25 Բայց քո եւ արանց որ ընդ քեզ եղեն միաբան, առ ոչինչ համարեալ զմահ անձին` դիմեցին յիրսդ քաջաբար. եւ որ մեռան ի ձէնջ` ի Պերոզի յամբարտաւանութենէն խնդրեն աստուածք զարիւնն զայն, եւ որք ապրելդ կարացայք եւ ի միջի լինել` անպարտ էք եւ անվնաս էք:

 91:25 But you and the men united with you, regarding their lives as nothing, bravely applied themselves to the deed. As for those of your number who died, the gods will demand that blood from the impiety of Peroz; and as for those of you who are still alive, you are guiltless and blameless:

91:26 Վասն զի որ այժմ Արեաց տէրն է եւ ամենայն աւագանին` զայդ եւեթ խաւսին հանապազ, եւ անմխիթար ողբան եւ տրտմին, յիշելով զՊերոզի զանհաւան եւ զանբարհաւաճ զբարսն, զոր ոչ ունէր նման մարդոյ, այլ նման չար եւ վայրենի գազանի:

 91:26 For the one who is now lord of the Aryans, and all the nobility, always talk about this, and inconsolably lament and mourn, recalling the intractable and impious ways of the man who had no parallel among men, but rather resembled a wild beast:

91:27 Որ կորոյս զինքն եւ զամենայն Արեաց աշխարհի զոյժ եւ զզաւրութիւն, եւ զթագաւորութիւն մի մեծ եւ զազատ ի ծառայութիւն ետ Հեփթաղին. յորմէ ի դառն ծառայութենէ, մինչ կենդանի է Արեաց աշխարհն` զերծանել ոչ կարէ:

 91:27 He was the one who lost himself and the might and strength of the Aryan world and gave the great and free kingdom into service to the Hepthalites. As long as the Aryan world endures there will be no more bitter service from which we cannot free ourselves:

91:28 Բայց դու թէ հաւանեալ նուաճիս, եւ բնիկ քո նախնեացն տեառն ծառայութիւն առնես, եւ որ ինչ վատթարն եղեւ ի մէնջ եւ ի ձէնջ` մոռանաս եւ ի բաց թողուս, զայս առնես իմով միջնորդութեամբ` դու աստէն ի Հայս կաս, մինչեւ թագաւորն կնքէ եւ տայ բերել առ քեզ. եւ եկեալ բարեաւ առ տէրն Արեաց, զամենայն որ ինչ բարի եւ արժան է, ե՛ւ քում անձինդ եւ որում դու կամիս` տայ սիրով եւ կամաւ եւ կատարէ:

 91:28 But should you willingly submit, and perform the natural service of your ancestors, overlooking and forgiving the bad things between us, with my intercession I will arrange that you return to Armenia and the king will have (this agreement) sealed and sent to you. Then when you come safely to the lord of the Aryans, he will affectionately and willingly grant and implement everything that you wish which is good and worthy for yourself and for whomever you choose:
