45:0 Յաղագս քաջութեանն Աշոտոյ եւ Մուշեղայ արքայորդւոց, եւ նենգութեանն Սեւորդեաց, եւ ըմբռնման Մուշեղայ:

 45:0 The Gallantry of Ashot and Mushegh, the Sons of the King; the Treachery of Sewordik’, and the Capture of Mushegh:

45:1 Բայց իբրեւ եկն ոստիկանն ի Դվին, ապա եւ արքայ Սմբատ դարձեալ ի փախստէութենէ իւրմէ՝ գայ ի սեպհական կալուածս տէրութեան իւրոյ յԵրազգաւորս:

 45:1 After the ostikan’s arrival at Dvin, king Smbat returned from his place of refuge, and came to his estate in Erazgawork’:

45:2 Իսկ իբրեւ դրունք գարնայնոյն բացան եւ աւուրքն ջերոտ զտեղի փոխաբերեցին՝ ապա ոստիկանն գունդս զօրաց բազմաց պատրաստեալ իբր հրոսակս արքային Սմբատայ, տայ ի ձեռս թագաւորին Գագկայ եւ յայլ եւս իւրոց նախարարացն եւ գաղտակծութեամբ առաքէ դաւողս ի վերայ նորա:

 45:2 But upon the arrival of spring when the weather grew warmer, the ostikan drew up a great number of troops to be sent against king Smbat, and putting them under the command of king Gagik as well as the rest of his naxarars, sent the conspirators against him in an underhanded manner:

45:3 Իսկ Սմբատայ զգացուցեալ ոմանց զդրժող դաւաճանութիւնն, ապա եւ նա եւս տագնապելով ստիպեալ գումարէ զօր բազում եւ տայ ի ձեռս Աշոտոյ եւ Մուշեղայ որդւոց իւրոց եւ հրամայէ զգուշանալ ի ճանապարհացն:

 45:3 When Smbat was informed by some of the insidious treason, he made haste to muster numerous forces and putting in their command his sons Ashot and Mushegh, ordered them to avoid the highways:

45:4 Իսկ նոցա չուեալ եկեալ հասեալ ի Նիգ գաւառ՝ տեսին, զի ճամբար այլազգեացն բունեալ դադարեալ էր ի հովիտս հարթայատակ վայրի միոջ առ ստորոտով լերինն, ընդ որոց եւ թագաւորն եւս Գագիկ:

 45:4 Upon reaching the district of Nig, the latter noticed that the enemy, among whom was king Gagik, had pitched camp on a level plain in a valley at the foot of the mountain:

45:5 Արդ՝ իբրեւ այն այնպէս իմն նոցա ի դիմի հարկանէին՝ ակամայ կամօք ապա ի մարտ պատրաստեցան, ոչ գիտելով զնենգութիւն զօրաց իւրեանց՝ բնակչաց Ուտի գաւառի, որք են Սեւորդիք:

 45:5 Presently, the enemy encountered them in such a way that against their wishes they were forced to make preparations for an attack without realizing the treachery of the troops from the province of Uti, who are called Sewordik’:

45:6 Անդ ապա Աշոտ եւ Մուշեղ նախ ինքեանք իսկ անցեալ յասպարիսի՝ շահատակեալ առաքինանային. եւ բազմահանդէս քաջութեամբ հատեալ զռազմ պարու նոցա զմիմեամբք արկանէին:

 45:6 At that time, Ashot and Mushegh charging into the arena before anyone, distinguished themselves in battle, and through numerous acts of gallantry played havoc with the lines of the enemy army, wherein they caused much confusion:

45:7 Իսկ իբրեւ խոր խոցեցաւ պատերազմն եւ ասպատակն խառն ընդ միմեանս հարան, յանկարծակի ապա զօրքն Ուտէացի ընդ կրունկն դարձեալ ըստ նենգապատիր խորհրդոյն՝ անդառնալի գնային ի կամս անձանց:

 45:7 In the heat of the battle, when the fighting was carried at close quarter, troops from Uti turned suddenly on their heels, and in accordance with their insidious plan left voluntarily not to return again:

45:8 Իսկ վասն զի յայնմ կողմանէ զօրուն էր Աշոտ՝ յակամայ հարկեցաւ ընդ նոսին դառնալ յետս կոյս, զի ասպատակ այլազգեացն զօրացեալ սաստկանային:

 45:8 As Ashot was in that wing of the army, against his wish he was forced to retreat with them, for the assaults of the foreign invaders had become more intense:

45:9 Իսկ Մուշէղ ի մէջ թշնամեացն անկեալ՝ բազում անհնարին քաջութիւնս ցուցանէր մինչ ի զարմացումն զամենեսեան ածեալ. սակայն մենամարտութեամբն ոչ կարացեալ դիմակաց լինել բազմութեանն՝ ձերբակալ զնա արարեալ տանէին առ ոստիկանն:

 45:9 Mushegh, however, who had been cast into the midst of the enemy, displayed astonishing valor to everyone’s amazement. Nevertheless, unable to withstand the multitude alone, he was seized and taken to the ostikan:

45:10 Իսկ նորա զուարթացեալ զուարճացեալ ընդ ըմբռնումն թագաւորազուն մանկանն Մուշեղայ՝ խրախութիւնս բազումս յարդարէր զօրաց իւրոց:

 45:10 The latter was overjoyed at the capture of the youthful royal prince (Mushegh), and held many a feast for his troops:

45:11 Եւ յայնմ հետէ ապա նիւթ հրաբորբոք դառնութեան մտաց գտեալ զայնպիսի յաղթութիւն՝ հրակիզութիւնս բազումս սփռեալ տարածանէ ընդ ոլորտս երկրի մերոյ: Եւ ի միջօրէի իբրեւ ի գիշերի մութ եւ մէգ եւ մառախուղ եւ խաւար աղջամղջին պատեալ պաշարէր զԱսքանազեանս ազն. եւ ի լծակս կշռոց եդեալ զերկունս տագնապ տարակուսանաց՝ հակամիտեալ կուտեալ գտանէին ի վերայ մեր ծանրատաղտուկ անուր Հագարու առաւել քան զքարինս ձորոյն Նաքովրայ. վասն զի նետք հինից եւ տէգք Տեառն տեղացին ի մեզ:

 45:11 Thenceforth, considering such victories as fuel for the inflamed bitterness of his mind, he spread the extensive conflagration throughout our land, where at midday dusk, haze and somber darkness blinded the people of Ashkenaz, as if it were night. Putting our laborious toils on the scale, we discovered that the burdensome fetter weighed heavier on us than the stones in the valley of Achor, because the arrows of the invaders and the spears of the Lord struck us:

45:12 Քանզի արմատ դառնութեան, զոր երբեմն խլեաց Տէր ի տանէս Թորգոմայ՝ կրկին շառաւիղեալ տնկեցաւ յիմանալի յայգեստանս մեր՝ ի փշահեղձ մացառս վերընծիւղեալ յեղծումն եւ յապականութիւն:

 45:12 For the root of bitterness, which formerly the Lord had plucked out of the house of Togarmah, once again was planted in the midst of our reasonable vineyards and turned into thorny bushes that are destructive and defiled:

45:13 Եւ այնուհետեւ ահա սիրտ իմ տանջեալ տագնապի տարակուսանօք եւ հաշեալ մաշի փորիմ ի լալոյ, զի յանօրէնութեանց մերոյ այցելութիւն Տեառն անտես արար զմեզ. եւ ի սեւաթոյր տխրութենէ գործոց մերոց խեթիւ հայեցաւ ի մեզ արեգակն ճշմարիտ. եւ մատնեցաք ի ձեռս ծանրասրտի երկրորդն Փարաւոնի եւ դառն գործավարաց նորա, որք առաւել եւս քան զանուր կաւափաղաղ աղիւսագործութեանն վէ՛րս ի վերայ եդեալ՝ կործանեցին զմեզ անհնարին հարուածովք ի վերայ հարուածոց:

 45:13 Behold! Henceforward my heart will be tormented with agony and my stomach will shrink from shedding tears, for Providence disregarded us because of our lawlessness, and the righteous sun looked askance at us because of the black notoriety of our deeds. We fell into the hands of the obstinate second Pharaoh and his relentless agents, who inflicted on us more wounds, than (one would receive) from the shackle (used for) mixing mortar to make bricks. They destroyed us by striking blow upon blow:

45:14 Վասն զի իբրեւ զմրրիկ հողմոյ շնչեալ ի մեզ մահառիթ Իսմայէլեան օդն դառնաշունչ եւ ըստ նմանութեան փոշոյ պտուտաբար ցնդեալ՝ ի բաց զմեզ տարագրեաց ի մեր բնակութենէ. եւ ըստ սաստկութեան ուղխից յորձանաց հեղեղեալ ողողեալ՝ արբոյց զհոգի յիմարութեան առ հասարակ՝ իբրեւ զոչխար ի սպանդ զմեզ վարատեալ:

 45:14 Like a tempest, the deathly Ishmaelite winds blew bitterly and banishing us from our homes, disappeared whirling away like a dust storm. With the fierceness of torrents, inundating every land, they quenched their foolish spirit by driving us to slaughter like sheep:

45:15 Եւ արդ սակս այսորիկ որ յիմումս շտեմարանի մտացս է տեսութիւն շարժութեան՝ շլացեալ եւ ունայնացեալ, ոչ բաւէ բանիւ լնուլ զնպաստ խորհրդոյն ըստ զգալի աղէտիցս հասելոյ կալելոյ զմեզ:

 45:15 Presently, the faculty of perception, which is located in the storage of my mind, has become so dull and blank in view of these events, that it is incapable of helping me to put to words my thoughts on the considerable number of misfortunes that came upon us:

45:16 Սակայն զհամարձակախօսն Եսայիաս յօժանդակութիւն ինձ բերեալ, զի իմաստասիրել եւ ողբալ ուսուսցէ զխղխայթս մերձաւոր հարուածոցս բարկութեան եւ խրատու ողորմութեան Տեառն:

 45:16 Nevertheless, I shall call upon the outspoken Isaiah to come to my succor and teach me how to play the philosopher, and grieve for the wounds received by the recent blows brought about by the wrath and the admonitory mercy of the Lord:

45:17 Զարթիր՝ ասէ, զարթիր եւ արի կաց. եւ դիտեա ինձ աստ՝ Երուսաղէմ, զոր արբերն զբաժակն կործանման, զբաժակն սրտմտութեան, զոր արբերն եւ թափեցեր. եւ ոչ ոք է յորդւոցն քոց, որ զքեզն մխիթարէ:

 45:17 Awake,” He says, “Awake, stand up, and look at me, O Jerusalem, that hast drunk (at the hand of the Lord) the cup of calamity, the cup of wrath which thou hast drunk and drained, and there is none to comfort thee of all the children whom thou borest:

45:18 եւ ըստ միւսումն ակնկալեալ, թէ «Ո՞ ընդ իս տրտմեսցի, եւ ոչ ոք գտաւ մխիթարիչ ինձ:

 45:18 I refer now to another passage: “I looked for some one who could grieve with me but there was none; and I found no comforters:

45:19 եւ ըստ այլումն, թէ «Ո՞վ եղիցի տրտմակից ինձ. մի՛ թէ բեկո՞ւմն քո կամ սասանութիւն սովու եւ սրոյ:

 45:19 In a third passage he (Isaiah) says: “And who shall sympathize with thee? Desolation, and destruction by famine and sword:

45:20 Զի արդարեւ իսկ ըստ նախագուշակ տեսողին՝ ոչ կարեն մխիթարել զմեզ որդիքն մեր՝ տարակուսեալք եւ գերեալք եւ հալածեալք եւ սպանեալք եւ ննջեալք ի կիցս ամենայն ճանապարհաց:

 45:20 Verily, in accordance with the foreboding prophet, our sons, who faint and are enslaved, persecuted and murdered, and lie at the head of all the streets, cannot comfort us:

45:21 Եւ յիրաւի ի մեզ բղխեաց այսպիսի մահաշշուկ հոտ դառնութեան, զի որովք պատուեցաքն եւ վայելեցաք յօրհնութիւն քաղցրութեան կամացն Աստուծոյ, ոչ ծանեաք զնա արժանապէս՝ յորմէ զբարին կթեցաք. եւ ոչ գոհացաք զտուողէն մխիթարութեան, որով եւ պարտն պահանջէր: Եւ սակս այսորիկ ապա նոքիմբք եւ խրատեցաք, եւ ապա եօթնպատիկ հատուցան մեղք մեր ի ծոցս մեր:

 45:21 And, indeed, such a deathly and acrid stench rose in our midst that even though we were honored and blessed with the kindness of God’s will, we did not duly acknowledge Him from whom we received good things, and contrary to the call of duty, we were not thankful to the giver of comfort. Because of this we were admonished with such misfortunes, and repaid for the sins in our bosom sevenfold:

45:22 Սուգ առնու եւ ընդ մեզ մարգարէութիւնն ասելով. «Հրէաստան կործանեցաւ եւ խոնարհեցաւ փառքն Սիօնի:

 45:22 The prophet is in mourning with us when he says, “Judah has fallen, and the glory of Sion has been brought low:

45:23 Վասն զի թողան իսկ ի խնամակալութենէ Բարձրելոյն աստուածաշէն եկեղեցիքն Քրիստոսի իբրեւ զտաղաւար յայգւոջ եւ իբրեւ զհովանի մրգապահաց ի մէջ սեղխենեաց. եւ փայտատօք եւ մրճօք կործանեցին զդրունս նորա եւ հրկէզ արարին զսրբութիւն նորա, եւ պղծեցին զխորան անուան նորա. եւ ժառանգութիւն Տեառն կոխեցաւ ի գարշապարաց պղծոց եւ ի խոզական երկրապիշ անցաւորաց ճանապարհի. եւ անբիծ արեանց կղերց եկեղեցւոյ տարապարտ հեղաւ իբրեւ զջուր շուրջ զԵրուսաղէմաւ: Եւ ի տանէ առաւել քան յօտարաց բուսաւ արմատ դառնութեան:

 45:23 For even the God-built churches of Christ were left forlorn by the Exalted, in the likeness of huts in vineyards, or gardners’ shelters in melon orchards. The gates of the churches were destroyed by axes and hammers. The host therein was burned and the altars raised in His name desecrated. The patrimony of the Lord was trampled under the heels of the impure and swine-like beasts wandering over the roads. The unblemished blood of the clerics of the church was shed in vain like water, shed around Jerusalem. The roots of bitterness sprouted more from our house than from outside:

45:24 զի կարծեցեալ սիւնք ոմանք ապստամբեցան ի Տեառնէ, եւ զինեալք զլեզուս իւրեանց նանրութեամբ եւ անօրէնութեամբ՝ խօսեցան խոտորնակս թիւրս առաջի իշխանաց մերոց. եւ խաբեբայք եւ պատրիչք փոխաբերեցան ընդ արանց արդարոց եւ ստուգաբանից. եւ յաչս զօրավարաց մերոց եւ գլխաւոր իշխանաց անարգեցան ստոյգ հովիւք հօտի Տեառն: Եւ ստացան հովիւս բազումս ի գայթակղութիւն իւրեանց:

 45:24 Some of the supposed pillars (of the kingdom) rose against the Lord. They sharpened their tongues with insidiousness and impiety, and spoke before our princes words that were deceptive and false. Liars and slanderers replaced men who were just and truthful in words. Before the eyes of our generals and chief princes the true pastors of the flock of Christ were dishonored. In their midst they received several pastors who brought disgrace upon them:

45:25 եւ սակս այսորիկ ստացաք նախատինս յարանց ստոց եւ անզգամաց. եւ եղաք ի կատականս ծաղու ազգաց, որք շուրջ էին զմեօք. եւ հօտք հանդերձ հովուօք յափշտակեցաք ի խստաց ապստամբողաց ի գերութիւն մատնեալք եւ վաճառակուր լեալք:

 45:25 For this reason, we received insults from deceitful and insolent men, who made us the laughingstock of the nations that lived around us. The flock, together with her pastors, was snatched away by the harsh insurgents and condemned to captivity in order to be sold as slaves:

45:26 Իսկ այլք ոմանք սուրբ ձեռօք եւ ամբիծ սրտիւք զբազում գանից եւ գելարանաց եւ կապանաց եւ խոշտանգանաց եւ բանտից եւ անհնարին նեղութեանց զփորձ առին, եւ բարձան յերեսաց անիրաւութեանց այնոցիկ, որք բարձրացուցին իսկ զանարգանս մոլորութեան յանձինս իւրեանց:

 45:26 There were some with pure hands and unblemished hearts, who suffered the agony of many blows, tortures, fetters, torments, prison and unbearable toils. The latter were annihilated because of the iniquity of those who had exalted the scandalous aberration within themselves:

45:27 եւ դիակունք ծառայից Աստուծոյ գէշ թռչնոց երկնից արկան, եւ մարմինք սրբոց Բարձրելոյն ի կերակուրս գազանաց տուան: Եւ ոչ ոք գտաւ որ յինքեան բերէր զնախանձ Տեառն ամենակալի եւ ի բաց տարեալ տրոհէր ի տանէ Տեառն զմշակսն անօրէնութեան. եւ կամեցողք այսպիսեացս ապա յիրաւի զանարգութիւն մոլորութեան յանձինս իւրեանց կրեցին:

 45:27 The bodies of the servants of the Lord were cast out as prey to the birds in the sky, and the bodies of the saints of the Exalted were given to the beasts to feed on. No one was left with the zeal of the Almighty Lord so as to be able to drive away those tillers of injustice from the house of the Lord, and those who wished to do this indeed suffered dishonor for their aberration:
