28:1 Յայնմ ժամանակի լու եղեւ այս յերկիրն Հայոց Մեծաց, ի դուռն թագաւորութեանն Արշակունեաց, առ Տրդատ արքայ Հայոց Մեծաց:

 28:1 At that time, news of developments in Byzantium reached the country of Greater Armenia, the court of the kingdom of the Arsacids, and Trdat, king of Greater Armenia:

28:2 Որ իբրեւ լուաւ զայս՝ բազում փառաւորութիւն ամենատեառնն մատուցանէր. խնդութեամբ եւ մեծաւ ուրախութեամբ գոհանայր զայնմանէ, որ ընդ ամենայն երկիր զիւր սուրբ անունն փառաւոր առնէր:

 28:2 As soon as Trdat heard about Constantine’s conversion to Christianity, he offered great glory to the Lord of All. With rejoicing and great joy, he thanked Him who made His blessed name glorious throughout the entire country:

28:3 Ապա իբրեւ լուաւ զայս ամենայն մեծ արքայն Հայոց Տրդատ՝ խորհուրդ առնոյր վասն ճանապարհացն այնոցիկ. հանդերձէր կազմէր առնոյր ընդ իւր զմեծ արքեպիսկոպոսն զԳրիգորիոս եւ զնորին որդին զԱրիստակէս եպիսկոպոս եւ զմիւս եպիսկոպոսն զԱղբիանոս:

 28:3 Now when Trdat, the great king of the Armenians, heard all of this, he took counsel about the journey to visit Constantinople. He made preparations to take with him the great archbishop Gregory, as well as his son, the bishop Aristakes, and the other bishop, Aghbianos:

28:4 Եւ ի զինուորական կողմանէն՝ զչորեսին գահերէցսն իւրոյ տաճարին, որ բդեաշխքն կոչին. զառաջին սահմանակալն ի Նոր Շիրական կողմանէն, եւ զերկրորդ սահմանակալն յԱսորեստանեայց կողմանէն, եւ զերրորդն՝ յԱրուաստան կողմանէն, զչորրորդն՝ ի Մասքթաց կողմանէն. զմեծ իշխանն Անգեղ տան, եւ զթագադիր ասպետն, եւ զսպարապետն մեծ, եւ զիշխանն Մոկաց, եւ զիշխանն Սիւնեաց, եւ զիշխանն Ռշտունեաց, եւ զիշխանն Մաղխազութեան տանն, եւ զշահապն Շահապիվանի, եւ զիշխանն սպասկապետութեանն:

 28:4 From the military Trdat chose the occupants of the four senior thrones in his court, who are called [bdeashxq] borderlords. Of these, the first was the borderlord of the Nor Shirakan area; second, the borderlord of the Asorestan area; third, the borderlord of the Aruastan area; and fourth, the borderlord of the Masqut area. In addition, Trdat took with him the great prince of the House of Angegh, the coronant aspet, the great [sparapet] commander-in-chief of the army; the prince of Mokq; the prince of Siwniq; the prince of Rshtuniq; the prince of the House of the Maghxaz-dom, the shahap of Shahapivan; and the prince who was [spasqapetutyun] master of the court:

28:5 Եւ այլ բազում մեծամեծաւք, եւ եաւթանասուն հազարաւ ընտիր ընտիր զաւրու հանդերձ՝ խաղայր գնայր յԱյրարատ գաւառէ ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքէ՝ անցանել ի սահմանս Յունաց:

 28:5 In addition, Trdat took along many other grandees, seventy thousand select troops. The delegation proceeded from the city of Vagharshapat in the district of Ayrarat and crossed the border into the land of the Greeks:

28:6 Զանց առնէր զբազում աւթեվանաւք մեծաւ ուրախութեամբ:

 28:6 With great joy the travelers passed over many lodging places:

28:7 Եւ բազում պատիւս պատրաստութեան հպարտութեան, ըստ քաղաքաց քաղաքաց դիպելոց եւ իշխանաց իշխանաց պատահելոց, գտանէին մեծարանս ընդունելութեան:

 28:7 They were met with many exalted receptions and honors in every city and from all the princes:

28:8 Ընդ ցամաք եւ ընդ ծով փութացեալ աճապարէին, մինչ երթային հասանէին յաշխարհն Իտալիացւոց, յերկիրն Դաղմատացւոց, ի թագաւորակաց քաղաքն Հռովմայեցւոց:

 28:8 They hurried along by land and by sea until they reached the land of the Italians, the country of the Dalmatians, and Rome the city of the kings of the Romans:

28:9 Զորմէ իսկոյն պատմեալ յարքունական պաղատանն. զոր իբրեւ լուաւ աստուածակարգ թագաւորն պատուակալ աթոռոյն Կոստանդիանոս, եւ հայրապետն մեծ, արքեպիսկոպոսն աշխարհամուտ դրանն, որում անուն կոչէր Եւսեբիոս՝ մեծաւ սիրով պատիւ արարեալ՝ ընդ առաջ ելանէին, եւ տուեալ միմեանց զհանգիտապատիւ ողջոյնն ուրախ լինէին:

 28:9 News of their arrival was immediately conveyed to the royal palace. When this was heard by Constantine, who had been established by God as the honorable occupant of the throne, and by the great Patriarch, the archbishop of the royal court, who was named Eusebius, they went out before their guests with great love and honor. They rejoiced upon meeting one another:

28:10 Եւ եղեալ ժամանակս ինչ անդէն ի տիեզերական քաղաքին»՝ ապա զարմացեալ աստուածասէր կայսրն Կոստանդիանոս, հարցանելով զարքայն Տրդատ, թէ «Զիա՞րդ կամ ո՞րպէս եղեն առ քեզ Աստուծոյ սքանչելիքն:

 28:10 When the guests had been some time in the universal city, the pious Emperor Constantine asked King Trdat “How and in what manner did these miracles of God happen among you:

28:11 Իսկ նա կաց պատմեաց առաջի կայսերն զամենայն արարեալսն Աստուծոյ առ նա զբարերարութիւնսն:

 28:11 Then he stood before the emperor and told him of all the blessings performed by God for him:

28:12 Եւ զանհնարին զպատուհասն, զլինել ի կերպարանս անասնոյ, ոչ ամաւթ համարեցաւ պատմել նմա:

 28:12 nor was he ashamed to narrate the fearful punishment of his being in the form of an animal:

28:13 Եւ զհամբերութիւն նահատակեալ վկայիցն քաջութեան, եւ ո՛ր գործք գործեցան, եւ ո՛րպէս բնութիւն զաւրութեան նոցա:

 28:13 And he told about the heroic endurance of the brave martyrs, and what deeds were done, and what was their strength:

28:14 Կամ զոր անդէն իսկ յանդիման ցուցանէր կայսերն զտարեալն ընդ իւր զԳրիգոր, եթէ «Այս այն այր է, ասէ, յոյր ձեռն ծանեաք մեք զմարդասիրութիւնն Աստուծոյ, եւ զնորին ժուժկալութիւն համբերութեանն նշանաւոր զարմանագործութեանցն:

 28:14 Then he introduced to the emperor Gregory, whom he had brought with him, saying: “This is the man through whom we came to know God’s benevolence [cf. Tit. 3.4] and the long-suffering endurance of his wondrous miracles:

28:15 Վասն որոյ զարմացեալ կայսրն Կոստանդիանոս, խոնարհեցուցեալ զանձն՝ անկանէր առաջի Գրիգորի, զի աւրհնեսցի ի նմանէ. եւ բազում վայելուչ մեծարանաւք պատիւ արարեալ նմա, իբրեւ խոստովանողի Քրիստոսի, ըստ արժանաւորութեան նորա:

 28:15 At this the emperor Constantine was amazed, and humbled himself and fell before Gregory to be blessed by him. And with many splendid honors he exalted him as a confessor of Christ according to his merits:

28:16 Սոյնպէս եւ արքային Տրդատայ, իբրեւ եղբաւր սիրելւոյ, սէր ցուցեալ ուրախութեամբ մեծաւ, մանաւանդ վասն աստուածածանաւթութեան նորա՝ առաւել դաշինս կռէր ընդ նմա, միջնորդ կալեալ զհաւատսն որ ի Տէր Քրիստոսն էր, զի անշուշտ մինչ ի բուն զհաւատարիմ սէրն ի մէջ թագաւորութեանցն պահեսցեն. զի եւս քան զեւս առաւելագոյն զարքայն Հայոց հաստատեսցէ յԵրրորդութեան հաւատսն:

 28:16 Similarly, with great happiness he showed love for king Trdat as for a dear brother, especially because of his recognition of God. And furthermore, he made an alliance with him, holding their faith in the Lord Christ as an intermediary so that they might constantly and forever keep faithful love between their kingdoms, and that he might confirm the Armenian king ever more and more in faith in the Trinity:

28:17 Իսկ Տրդատիոս պատմէր եւ վասն վկայիցն Աստուծոյ, թէ ո՛րպէս կամ զի՛նչ աւրինակ վկայեցին:

 28:17 Then Tiridates told about the martyrs of God and how and in what way they had been martyred:

28:18 Ապա եւ կայսրն Կոստանդիանոս սկսաւ պատմել նմա վասն ազնուական վարուց նոցա, զոր յառաջագոյն գիտէր՝ մինչդեռ էին անդէն յիւրեանց աշխարհին, թէ ո՛րպէս հաճոյ վարուքն էին եւ կամ ո՛րպէս ազնուականք ի մարմնաւոր կողմանէ տոհմակցաց իւրեանց:

 28:18 Then the emperor Constantine began to tell him about their honorable life. For he had previously known, while they were still in their own land, how pleasing their life had been and how they were of noble descent:

28:19 Եւ զգործսն զաւրութեան յաղթութեանն՝ յԱստուծոյ նմա տուեալ՝ պատմէր, առ ամենայն թշնամիսն ճշմարտութեանն յաղթող երեւեալ:

 28:19 And he told of the powerful and victorious deeds given him by God so that he became victorious over all the enemies of the truth:

28:20 Ասէ. «Գիտեա՛, եղբայր, զի Աստուած յամենայն երկրի երեւեցուցանէ զիւր ողորմութիւն զաւրութեանն. զի ամենայն արարածք նորա ծանիցեն զնա եւ լինիցին նորա փառաւորիչք ճշմարտութեամբ, քանզի այնպիսի երկրպագուս իւր խնդրէ:

 28:20 He note: “Know, brother, that God reveals in every land his powerful mercy so that all his creatures may know him and become his praisers in truth, ’because he seeks such worshippers:

28:21 Ապա յետ այսորիկ «մեծարեալ լինէին դարմանաւք եւ մեծապատիւ շքեղութեան կարգաւք յարքունեացն եւ յեկեղեցեացն եւ ի պատուական իշխանաց քաղաքին. եւ մեծամեծ պատարագաւք եւ երեւելի պարգեւաւքն պատուեալ սիրով:

 28:21 Then, after this, they were exalted with solicitude and great splendor by the court, church officials, and the honorable princes of the city. With very great offerings and noteworthy gifts they were honored with affection:

28:22 Եւ ապա հրաժարեալ ի ծիրանափառ աւգոստականացն եւ ի սրբոյ կաթողիկոսէն, ընկալեալ ողջոյն յեկեղեցւոյն եւ յերեւելի իշխանաց քաղաքին, եւ ամենայն իրաւք յաջողեալք՝ ելանէին յոսկիապատ կառս արքունատուրս, եւ մեծաւ շքով եւ բազում վայելչութեամբ ունէին զճանապարհս արքունականս:

 28:22 Then they took leave of the Augusti who were garbed in robes of purple, with the blessed kat’oghikos receiving the farewell from the Church and the prominent princes of the city. Successful in all matters, they mounted the royal carriage, decorated with gold, and with great pomp and splendor they embarked on their royal journey:

28:23 Եւ ամենայն քաղաքաց պատահելոց պայծառագոյն երեւէին, եւ մեծամեծս ըստ արժանաւորութեան արքայութեանն պատուեալ անդստին, մինչեւ գային հասանէին» յերկիրն Հայոց, յԱյրարատեան գաւառ, ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաք, ի հանգստակայս սրբոցն:

 28:23 In all the cities they passed en route home they were most splendidly treated and exalted as befits royalty, until they arrived at the resting-places of the saints in the country of the Armenians, in the city of Vagharshapat, in the district of Ayrarat:

28:24 Եւ բերէին զպարգեւսն տուեալս անդստին, զոսկին եւ զարծաթն եւ զպատուական կարասին, ի նուէր սպասու եկեղեցւոյն Աստուծոյ, եւ ի տունս նուիրաց սրբոյ վկայիցն դնէին. նաեւ զտուեալ զոսկի սպասս կայսերն ի նոյն հանգիստ սրբոցն դնէին:

 28:24 They brought there the gifts which had been given to them as offerings for the service of the church of God - gold, silver, and costly furnishings - and put them in the chapels of the holy martyrs. They also put there in the same resting-places of the saints, the gold vessels given by the emperor:

28:25 Եւ առաւել զիւրեանց եկեղեցիսն շինեալ հաստատէին:

 28:25 And the churches they had built were made even more secure:

28:26 Եւ մեծն Գրիգոր առ շրջել ընդ աշակերտեալսն յառաջագոյն, եւ հաստատէր զնոսա ի ճշմարիտ վարդապետութեանն:

 28:26 The great Gregory circulated around among his earlier students, strengthening them in the true teachings:
