77:0 Եւ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան չուեալ գայր հասանէր յԱյրարատ գաւառ, եւ կատարեալ զուխտ պատարագաց ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքին, հանդերձ ընդ իւր ուխտապահ նախարարաւքն եւ այլ զաւրաւքն Հայոց, ի տանն Աստուծոյ եւ ի վկայարանս նահատակեալ կուսանացն, զուխտս պատարագաց եւ զսովորական նուէրս ընծայիցն Աստուծոյ:

 77:0 Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, arrived at the district of Ayrarat and, together with the oath-keeping naxarars and other troops of Armenia who were with him, fulfilled the vow of masses in the city of Vagharshapat. In the House of God, and in the martyria of the martyred virgins they conducted the masses (they had) vowed and offered gifts to God:

77:1 եւ նախ հոգացեալ զաղքատաց դարմանս` ապա մեծաւ ցնծութեամբ ուրախանային եւ ինքեանք, փառաւորելով զԱստուած:

 77:1 After first concerning themselves with maintaining the poor, they then glorified God themselves, with great rejoicing:

77:2 Եւ չուեալք անտի երթեալք հանգչէին ի բնական ոստանին Հայոց ի Դունի, մինչ զաւուրս ցրտաշունչ ձմերայնւոյն սառնամանեացն անցուցանէին:

 77:2 Then they went to the natural ostan of Armenia, to Duin, until the bitterly cold days of winter had passed:

77:3 Եւ մինչդեռ կամէին հանգչել առ սակաւ մի եւ ոգի առնուլ յաշխատութենէն` գային յանկարծակի ի կողմանց Վրաց արք դիւազգեցիկք եւ խելաշուրջք, խաւսելով բանս սուտս եւ տեսիլս խաբէութեան, զոր ոչ էր տեսեալ, ի կործանումն եւ յերկպառակութիւն զաւրաց նորին` առ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ յոստանին. եւ ասէին ցամենեսեան, թէ:

 77:3 Just as they were desirous of resting awhile and relaxing from labor, unexpectedly diabolical and insane men arrived from the Iberian (Georgian) region. At the ostan they told Armenia’s general, Vahan, false and deceitfully misleading things which they themselves had not witnessed, in order to destroy and disrupt his troops. They told everyone:

77:4 Ողջ են եւ կենդանի սքանչելի ասպետն Սահակ եւ քաջ սեպուհն Մամիկոնեան Վասակ. եւ զմեզ յղեցին առ ձեզ, թէ «Ի փախչելն ձեր ի կռուոյն Վրաց` մնացաք մեք ի կռուատեղն, խոցեալք կարէվէրք. եւ ըստ Աստուծոյ ազդեցութեանն, ի սաստկութենէ եւ ի կարեւոր վիրացն, զոր ունէաք ի մարմնի մերում` մերթ ի սող եւ մերթ անձնքարշութեամբ հասաք առ միմեանս, եւ հոլովեալք անկաք ի խիստ թաւուտ թուփս դժնկաց:

 77:4 The wonderful aspet Sahak and the brave sepuh of the Mamikoneans, Vasak, are still alive and well, and they sent us to you to tell you: ’After your flight from the Iberian battle, we remained at the site of the battle, gravely wounded. Through God’s influence, at times crawling, at times dragging ourselves (because of the severity of the wounds we had sustained) we drew near to one another, and, falling over, (hid) in some very dense buck-thorn bushes:

77:5 եւ կացեալ ի վերայ մեր ըստ Աստուծոյ ցուցակութեանն առն միոյ քահանայի հոգեւորի ի Տեղացն անապատէ, եւ ի նմին ժամու բարձեալ ի մէնջ զմի մի ըստ անձին` տարաւ հեռի ի տեղեացն որպէս պարսկաւ միով հրասախաչափաւ. չեւ եւս գիտելով, թէ ո՛ ոք իցեմք եւ կամ յորմէ՛ գաւառէ, այլ ըստ առաքինութեան իւրոյ` իբրեւ զարս յաղագս Աստուծոյ վիրաւորեալս` ապրեցուցանել զմեզ կամեցեալ, եւ կամ դիպեալս վախճանի` ամփոփել զոսկերս մեր յաւգուտ հոգւոյ իւրոյ տենչացեալ. եւ ապա որպէս յանկասկած տեղի հեռացուցեալ զմեզ ի տեղւոջէն առն` եւ լինէր անհոգացեալ:

 77:5 Through God’s design, a spiritual priest from the Teghac’ retreat was placed as our guardian, and, that same hour, one by one he lifted us up and took us about one Iranian hrasax away. He still did not know who we were or from what district. But in accordance with his virtue, he treated us as men wounded for the sake of God, and he wanted to save us or, in the event that we died, to gather our bones for the sake of his own soul. This man, after removing us from the (battle)site to a secure place, became confident:

77:6 Երթեալ այնուհետեւ ի վանկունսն իւր` բերէր մեզ կերակուր ինչ դուզնաքեայ եւ ջուր, ածեալ ընդ իւր եւ մանուկ մի միւս եւս այլ, եւ մատուցեալ մեզ աղաչէր ճաշակել. եւ մեր ընկալեալ ըստ կարի զկերակուրն ի ձեռանէ սրբոյն ջամբելով` զաւրացաք սակաւ մի:

 77:6 He then went to his monastery, brought us a small amount of food and water, brought yet another cleric with him, offered us the food and bade us eat. After eating the food as we could from the saint’s hands, we were revived a bit:

77:7 Եւ նորա գիտացեալ, թէ սակաւ մի բերեալ ոգի բացաք զաչս` սկսաւ նա այնուհետեւ հարցանել զմեզ, թէ ուստի՞ էք եւ կամ յորմէ՞ գաւառէ. քանզի ձեւդ ձեր եւ կերպարան ազատս կարծեցուցանէ զձեզ:

 77:7 When he saw that we had been revived somewhat and opened our eyes, he gradually began to interrogate us as to where we had come from, and from what district, since, he said, our manner and demeanor were such that he was led to believe we were azats:

77:8 Եւ մեր զառաքինութիւն զառնն տեսեալ` զստոյգ իսկ ինչ պատմեալ ասացաք նմա զմէնջ յանուանէ. եւ նորա լուեալ` ետ փառս Աստուծոյ. եւ թողեալ առ մեզ զմանուկն, գնայր ի մէնջ ի վանկունսն իւր:

 77:8 When we saw the man’s virtue, we accurately informed him about ourselves. When he heard this, he glorified God. Leaving the cleric with us, he left us and went to his monastery:

77:9 Եւ ի միւսում եւս գիշերին ածեալ գրաստ, միւս եւս այլ մանկամբ` հանէին զմեզ ի գրաստն, եւ աւժանդակելով մեզ երեքեան տանէին յանապատն, ուր ինքեանք բնակեալ էին. եւ թագուցեալ զմեզ անդ առ իւր աւուրս բազումս` բժշկեալ ողջացաք զաւրութեամբն Աստուծոյ:

 77:9 The next evening he returned with pack animal( s) and yet another cleric, and they placed the three of us on the animal( s) and took us to the retreat where they dwelled. They concealed us there with them for many days, and through the power of God we were healed and made well:

77:10 Եւ որպէս սովորութիւն է հակառակորդ դիւին` շնչեալ յականջս ոմանց աստուածատեաց մարդոց՝ որսալ զմեզ սկսեալ են անձանձրոյթ եւ կամին սպանանել, եւ անձանց փառս գտանել ի Պարսկաց եւ պատիւս:

 77:10 As is the custom of the adversary satan, (news of our escape) was breathed into the ears of some God-hating men. They started to hunt for us tirelessly and wanted to kill us, to achieve glory and honors from the Iranians:

77:11 Եւ սուրբ վանականս ընդ բազում անապատ տեղիս եւ ընդ բազում խորաձորս քարանձաւաց շրջեցուցանէ զմեզ ի ծածուկ. բայց ածել այդր առ ձեզ երկնչի. գուցէ, ասէ, քննեալ ուրուք զհետս` գտանիցէ զմեզ եւ սպանանիցէ:

 77:11 Now the blessed monk secretly took us about, to many deserted places and many rugged caves. But (the priest) was afraid to send to you from there, thinking that if someone pursued and examined (the messenger) we would be discovered and killed:

77:12 Բայց արդ` փութացարո՛ւք արձակել այտի գունդ սաստիկ եւ զաւրագլուխ հաւատարիմ, եւ տանել զմեզ առ ձեզ, որպէս զի հասեալք առ ձեզ` լիցուք ի միասին վրէժխնդիրք հաւատոցն ճշմարտութեան:

 77:12 But now, hurry and send here a strong brigade with a dependable military commander and bring us to you, so that when we reach there together, we shall avenge the truth of our faith. ’:

77:13 Եւ լուեալ զայսպիսի սատանայական խաւսս արանց անմտաց` իսկոյն հաւատացեալ ասէին, թէ «Արդ փութալ եւեթ պիտի. զի յորժամ նոքա ողջամբ ի Հայս գան, եւ Պարսիկք զայն լսեն, թէ արդարեւ նոքա ողջ են` խորտակին ամենայն զաւրութիւնք նոցա, եւ լքանին:

 77:13 When they heard these satanic words from the stupid men, they immediately believed them and note: “Now we must move even more quickly, for when they safely come to Armenia and the Iranians find out that they are indeed alive, their entire force will disintegrate and forsake them:

77:14 Այլ մանաւանդ յորժամ յականջս կանանց եւս եհաս բան արանցն իւրեանց, եւ լուան թէ ողջ են, - քանզի եւ զխաւսս անգամ ի գիշերի զառն եւ զկնոջ խաւսէին նշանաւ դիւազգեցիկ արքն եւ հաւատալի առնէին, - չառնէին այնուհետեւ դուլ կանայքն ի տուէ եւ ի գիշերի, ըստ սայթաք եւ անհաստատ բնութեան կանանց, այլ գրգռէին զսիրելիս իւրեանց եւ զազգականս, զդայեակս նոցա եւ զծառայս` փութալ ճեպել հասանել վաղվաղակի եւ ածել զնոսա:

 77:14 This was even more so when word reached the women that their men were alive (since that night the diabolical men spoke to the men and women with proof and were believed). For the women (in accordance with the fickle and infirm nature of women) did not cease urging their dear ones, relatives, dayeaks and servants day and night, to quickly go (to Iberia) and to immediately retrieve them:

77:15 Եւ զայս ամենայն բանս դիւազգեցիկ արանցն եկելոց ի Վրաց, եւ զկամս եւ զհաւանութիւն բազում արանցն ի Հայ մարդկանէ, եւս առաւել զանդլութիւն կանանց եւ զճեպս եւ զանժուժկալութիւն, որ նման բոցոյ տոչորէին ի խորհուրդս նոցա, եւ ոչ ոք զաւրէր ցածուցանել, լուեալ ամենիմաստի եւ զգայուն մտաց Մամիկոնեանն Վահանայ զաւրավարին Հայոց` ասէր. «Այդ բանք եւ խորհուրդք` արանց վատախորհրդաց են եւ որք չարաչար են իմաստիւք:

 77:15 When the brilliant and perceptive general of Armenia, Vahan Mamikonean, heard all the words of the diabolical men from Iberia, the wishes and consent of many Armenians, the ceaseless, impatient urgings of the wives—which resembled a fire blazing in their minds which none had the strength to put out—(Vahan) note: “Those are the words and plans of men of poor judgement with feeble minds:

77:16 Քանզի գիտացեալ զեկս պարսիկ գումարտակի գարնանի յերկիրս Հայոց` խորհեալ իմացան զայլ, թէ քայքայել կարեմք եւ պառակտել զժողովումն զաւրաց Հայոց որ յոստանին էին, եւ այսր եւ անդր ցրուել. ապա թէ կարի սակաւ գունդ կայ ի Պարսից` թէպէտ եւ ձերբակալ արարեալ կորուսանեն զնոսա:

 77:16 For, as the Iranian corps knows of the arrival of spring in the country of Armenia, they have plotted to pull apart and rend asunder the assemblage of Armenian troops at the ostan, and to disperse them here and there. For even if the brigade from Iran is very small, nonetheless they will arrest and destroy them:

77:17 Այլ թէ ընդդէմ ոմանց բանքս իմ ոչ թուին՝ ես աշխարհակորուստ արանցն ողջ ոչ տայի գնալ յաշխարհէս Հայոց:

 77:17 So that my words do not seem contradictory to some, I (state that) I will not permit (these) world-destroying men to leave the land of Armenia in health:

77:18 Վասն զի զերանելի զեղբաւրն իմոյ զնահատակութիւն յաւուր կատարման իւրոյ, եւ յառաջ քան զպսակելն նորա տեսի զպսակն. եւ նախ քան զվախճանն` ցուցաւ ինձ գոյնն եւ կերպարան բանակի այնր եւ զաւրու, յոր բանակ նախադնելոց եւ վերանալոց էր. քանզի վաղագոյն քան զյարձակելն մեր եւ հասանելն առ միմեանս` լուսաւորեցան երեսք նորա լուսով, զորոյ զնմանութիւն լուսոյն ոչ կարեմ ասել:

 77:18 Because on the day of my venerable brother’s martyrdom, I foresaw the martyrdom and I saw him receive his crown before he received it. And before the end I was shown the color and aspect of that army and force, which was fated to die. (This is) because long before we had attacked and reached each other, (Vasak’s) face was illuminated by a light the like of which I cannot describe:

77:19 եւ զարմացեալ ընդ նորա տեսիլն` կամեցայ միւսանգամ հայել ընդ նա, եւ յեւս առաւել ճառագայթարձակ լուսոյ երեսացն զարհուրեալ` ոչ եւս կարացի հայել:

 77:19 Astonished at the appearance of his face, I wanted to look at him again, but was unable because the increasingly bright light from his face struck me with awe:

77:20 Որ թուի թէ եւ այլոց երեւեցաւ նոյն տեսիլ սքանչելութեան գունոյ նորա ի ժամուն. եւ ես անդէն եւ անդ գիտացի, թէ նա առաւ յինէն եւ յայլ զաւրս խառնեցաւ, որոյ զաւրաց այն կերպարան է եւ լուսաւորութիւն:

 77:20 It appears that others saw the same vision of his miraculous color then. I realized right away that he would be taken from me and mingle with other hosts, whose troops had that same aspect and radiance:

77:21 Եւ ես ասեմ, թէ զնա մի՛ խնդրէք եւ վասն ասպետի մի՛ աշխատիք:

 77:21 And I tell you, do not seek (Vasak) and do not labor (looking) for the aspet:

77:22 Ապա թէ որպէս զորդիս մարգարէիցն կամիք թարթափել յընդունայնս, որք զԵղիայն խնդրէին ապշեալք, որոց բողոքէր Եղիշայ` չաշխատել, եւ չլսէին` դառնայք ամաւթով նոյնպէս եւ դուք, որպէս եւ նոքա դարձան ամաւթալից եւ ունայնք:

 77:22 You are like the sons of the prophets who were occupied with idle affairs, and who, confounded, sought Elisha. But they did not heed his protest about not working and returned, full of shame. For you too will return ashamed and regretting it:

77:23 Բայց զի մի՛ երեւեցայց ումեք բարենախանձ` առաջի ձեր են արք զաւրուդ Հայոց եւ նախարարքդ. եւ որ ոք կամի երթալ` չարգելում. բայց յիշեսջիք եւ գիտասջիք, թէ ո՛րքան կորուստ յանաւգուտ երթիցդ յայդոցիկ հասանէ աշխարհիս Հայոց:

 77:23 But so that I do not appear (overly) jealous to anyone, the men are before you, troops and naxarars of Armenia. I will not prevent anyone from going who wants to go. Only know and remember how much damage your departure will bring to the land of Armenia:

77:24 Յայնժամ հաւանեցուցեալ անխորհուրդ եւ թեթեւամիտ մարդոց, եւ մանաւանդ կանանց նահատակելոցն եւ նոցունց ընտանեաց եւ դայեկաց, զսեպուհն Մամիկոնէից զՄուշեղ` բազում այրընտիր գնդաւ արձակէին ընդ արսն շաղաւաշուրթս եւ խաբեբայս յիրս անաւգուտս եւ ի ճանապարհս զոր ոչ գիտէին:

 77:24 But imprudent and weak-minded men, and especially the martyrs’ wives, families, and dayeaks then convinced the sepuh of the Mamikoneans, Mushegh, and they dispatched (him) with a brigade of many select men to go with those false and fraudulent men on a road they did not know for futile matters:

77:25 Որոց տարեալ զնոսա ի սահմանս Վրաց` յածեցուցանէին զկնի սատանայի, որոյ եւ ինքեանք արբանեկեալք իսկ էին. եւ բազում պատրողական կարկատելով պատճառս` ասէին ցնոսա. «Փախուցեալք ի սպանողացն` ի թաքստոց էին, փոփոխելով յայլ եւ այլ խորաձորս քարանձաւաց եւ ի ծառախիտ կատարս բարձր լերանց:

 77:25 Those who led them to the borders of Iberia after Satan, were in fact Satan’s satellites and they invented many pretexts, telling (the Mushegheans): “Those who have escaped their killers are in hiding, moving about hither and thither in deep caves and the densely forested peaks of tall mountains:

77:26 Եւ այսպէս ի բազում աւուրս խելացնորեցուցեալ յածեցուցանէին զսեպուհն Մամիկոնէից զՄուշեղ եւ զգունդն որ ընդ նմա, մինչեւ ցվախճանել ցրտաշունչ հողմոց ձմերանւոյն սառնամանեաց:

 77:26 Thus for many days they goaded the sepuh of the Mamikoneans, Mushegh, and the brigade with him to insanity, leading them around until the end of the bitterly cold winds of winter’s frost:
